Có những thương hiệu và Thiết kế logo đã ăn sâu vào tâm trí của người tiêu dùng qua nhiều thế hệ, đến nỗi chỉ cần lướt qua là có thể biết đó là sản phẩm nào. Mặc dù có thay đổi theo thời gian, nhưng logo của những thương hiệu này chỉ trải qua sự điều chỉnh vừa phải chứ không mang tính cách mạng.

Trang tin 24/7 Wall St. đã “điểm danh” 10 thương hiệu và hình ảnh logo của các công ty đa quốc gia Mỹ đã tồn tại lâu năm nhất, bao gồm những cái tên đã quá nổi tiếng như Coca-Cola, New York Times, hay JPMorgan… Đây đều là những thương hiệu đã ra đời cách đây hàng thế kỷ và tới nay vẫn được sử dụng trên phạm vi toàn cầu.

1. John Deere

Hãng sản xuất máy công nghiệp John Deere được biết đến nhiều nhất qua sản phẩm máy kéo. Logo mang hình ảnh một chú hươu đang chạy nhảy đã được hãng sử dụng hơn 120 năm qua. John Deere thành lập vào năm 1837 và lần đầu đăng ký nhãn hiệu vào năm 1876. Ban đầu, chú hươu trên logo của hãng là loài hươu phổ biến ở tận châu Phi, sau đó được thay bằng một chú hươu đuôi trắng của vùng Bắc Mỹ. Tuy đã được chỉnh sửa nhiều lần, nhưng logo của John Deere vẫn luôn phản ánh khẩu hiệu của tập đoàn này: “Không gì vận hành được như Deere”.

2. Anheuser-Busch

Đi vào hoạt động vào năm 1852, Anheuser-Busch là một trong những hãng bia hàng đầu thế giới kể từ đó. Nổi tiếng không kém gì loại bia Budweiser do hãng sản xuất chính là logo Anheuser-Busch với hình chữ A và con đại bàng. Khi hãng Inbev thâu tóm Anheuser-Busch vào năm 2008, thương hiệu Anheuser-Busch cũng như logo hình chữ A và con đại bàng trên bao bì sản phẩm vẫn không hề bị ảnh hưởng. Thậm chí, hình ảnh con đại bàng còn được đưa vào logo của hãng mẹ mới mang tên Anheuser InBev.

3. Quaker Oats

Hình ảnh logo với người đàn ông là tín đồ giáo phái Quaker được hãng chế biến thực phẩm Quaker Oats lần đầu đăng ký nhãn hiệu vào năm 1877. Hình ảnh này được hãng sử dụng một phần vì công ty hoạt động tại bang Pennsylvania, nơi có nhiều người theo pháp Quaker, một phần cũng nhằm phản ánh những giá trị của giáo phái này là trung thực, chính trực và trong sáng. Trong phiên bản đầu tiên của logo, hình ảnh người đàn ông là tín đồ Quaker có cầm một tấm biển có chữ “Pure” (“trong sáng”). Trong 134 năm qua, hình ảnh này đã được điều chỉnh ba lần.

4. Aunt Jemima

Ý tưởng về sản phẩm bột chế biến sẵn để làm bánh kếp và thương hiệu Aunt Jemima đã nảy ra trong đầu Chris Rutt và Charles Underwood khi hai người đàn ông này xem biểu diễn bài hát mang tên Old Aunt Jemima vào năm 1888. Sau đó, họ đã bắt tay vào chế tạo và sản xuất loại bột này tại một nhà máy ở St. Joseph, bang Missouri. Hình ảnh người phụ nữ da màu phúc hậu trên logo của sản phẩm bột bánh kếp Aunt Jemima ban đầu là một người phục vụ, nhưng về sau đã được thay đổi dần để mang tính văn hóa cao hơn. Robinson của Pemberton mới là người nghĩ ra ý tưởng về tên gọi và logo của sản phẩm này. Theo Robinson, “hai chữ C trên logo trông sẽ rất ổn trên quảng cáo”. Sau đó, logo này đã được đăng ký vào năm 1887. Mặc dù đã được điều chỉnh nhiều lần theo năm tháng, hình ảnh thương hiệu của Coca-Cola vẫn không khác đi là mấy.

6. GE

Logo ban đầu của General Electric (GE) khi tập đoàn công nghiệp này mới thành lập vào năm 1892 chỉ bao gồm hai chữ G và E được viết cách điệu. Vào năm 1900, GE đăng ký một hình ảnh logo mới, bao gồm một vòng tròn có bốn cánh ở mặt trong bao quanh các chữ G và E. Hình ảnh logo này rất gần với hình ảnh logo hiện tại của GE. Trong suốt thế kỷ 20, GE chỉ thay đổi rất ít hình ảnh logo của hãng, trong đó lần điều chỉnh “mạnh tay” nhất là đưa màu xanh nước biển vào nền logo vào năm 2004.

7. Vicks

Thương hiệu dược phẩm Vicks chào đời vào thập niên 1890 dưới bàn tay của dược sỹ Lunsford Richardson ở Greensboro, bang North Carolina. Ban đầu, Richardson bán 21 loại thuốc mang hiệu Vicks. Khi đó, các sản phẩm Vicks mang nhãn hiệu một hình tam giác bên trong có dòng chữ “Vick’s Family Rememdies” (“Các loại thuốc chữa bệnh của nhà Vick”), và chân dung của gia đình này. Theo thời gian, logo này đã được thay đổi nhiều lần, bao gồm đảo chiều hình tam giác, tô màu đỏ, sau đó lại tô xanh và in chữ “VICKS” in hoa màu trắng. 9. Johnnie Walker

Rượu whisky Johnnie Walker được sản xuất lần đầu vào năm 1820 với tên gọi Walker’s Kilmarnock Whisky và được bán tại cửa hàng thực phẩm John “Johnnie” Walker’s ở Kilmarnock, Scotland. Ngày nay, hãng rượu Diageo có trụ sở ở London là chủ sở hữu của thương hiệu Johnnie Walker.

10. The New York Times

Phông chữ ngày nay của logo The New York Times đã xuất hiện trên số đầu tiên của tờ báo này phát hành ngày 18/9/1851, mặc dù ban đầu, tờ báo mang tên The New York Daily Times. Kể từ đó, Thiết kế logo của tờ báo trải qua nhiều thay đổi nhỏ, nhưng kiểu cách của phông chữ gần như được giữ nguyên suốt 160 năm qua.

A Historic Timeline of Beatrix Potter (1866 - 1943)

Reflection

The key theme of my timeline is the life of the children’s author and illustrator, Beatrix Potter, which I chose because I grew up reading her books and I absolutely love her work! Therefore, the timeline would clearly be aimed at researchers and fans of Potter and children’s literature. In order to portray a balanced perspective of Potter’s life, in my timeline I tried to choose the most important parts of both Potter’s literary career and her personal life. Thus the headings, Paid Work, The Tale of Peter Rabbit is Born!, Signed on by Frederick Warne, More Publications, Hill Top Brings Literary Success and The Tale of Little Pig Robinson all illustrate Potter’s career. Whereas the remainder are to do with other parts of her life. Regarding the images, I obviously selected ones which displayed Potter’s work for the headings connected to her literary career and for the others, apart from the heading, “Art Education,” I chose photographs of people to do with the associated contents. I wanted there to be a variety of images to make it as appealing and informative as I could for an archives’ audience.

I found a majority of the materials that I used in my timeline by simply performing a Google search of Beatrix Potter biography. However, I had to search for several of the images I used further. Hence, I used Google Images to search for Beatrix ‘s letter which has The Tale of Peter Rabbit in it, as well as Norman Warne, Hill Top Farm and Potter pictured with William Heelis. The latter were all straightforward searches. Also, the Victoria and Albert Museum’s website was fantastic for several of my images, particularly the ones showing Potter’s work, in which I used the website’s search bar. It was very easy to use; for example, I was able to find the image that I used for the heading, Signed on by Frederick Warne, by typing Beatrix Potter author Peter Rabbit 1902 in the search bar. One important point I want to make when selecting these websites, was that I always made sure that I could trust the information. For instance, I would check the “About Us” type pages and find out who created the websites, as well looking carefully at the content for accuracy, the language in terms of spelling and grammar, and if the websites were well maintained. In addition, one other source I used for my timeline was the book titled, A History of the Writings of Beatrix Potter including Unpublished Work, by Potter researcher and collector, Leslie Linder (Giaimo, 2017), which I own. The book was very helpful in terms of checking the accuracy of my internet sources for dates of when titles were published. It was also useful for extra details, such as the amount of “copies” that Potter “privately printed” of the first edition of The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Linder, 1971, p. 420).

I think the main challenge I faced regarding my timeline’s creation was how long it took putting everything together, as there were so many steps in the process, such as transferring my timeline’s information from a word document to the Google spreadsheet. Also, a lot of proofreading and editing took place. Finally, a few technical challenges I had with Timeline JS were initially working out what information goes where on the spreadsheet, two of my images didn’t work out, so I had to change them, and I wasn’t able to embed the timeline on this blog. However, despite all of this, I really enjoyed this assignment and I certainly learned a great deal!
