Post season 8 Castle Headcanons
Castle picking up the kids from school bringing them to the precinct to visit mommy, Captain Kate Beckett-Castle. Sometimes they get to hang out with Aunt Lanie, & Uncles Ryan and Esposito too. Castle often brings dinner for his wife. She sometimes forgets to eat, seeing as she’s not on the streets nearly as much. Not as many opportunities to go out and pick up some food on the case. Though, the boys do offer sometimes.
Castle buys Lanie very nice Spa certificates, jewelry, etc and new equipment for the morgue. And a cappuccino machine.
Kate always bringing Lanie coffee, treats, etc. when she’s called to a crime scene.
Castle surprising Kate with a puppy for their 5th anniversary. At first, she’s convinced it was to entertain their kids but he reminds her of their time taking care of Royal, the dog show judge’s own golden retriever companion. Kate had mentioned that she’d been wanting to get a dog then. In fact, they both did. Now was the perfect time. (s4, e13)
Big “Sissy” Alexis and Gram babysitting/ absolutely spoiling the kiddos during “Caskett” date nights or late nights at the office/precinct.
Kate meets up with victims’ relatives on occasion to comfort them when they need it. Usually from Joanne Delgado, whose mother was stuffed in her safe during a home invasion/robbery. (s1, e7)
Detective Karpowski coming back to the 12th on a case of her own to get a consult. When her case is solved they all take her out for a celebratory beer. They reminisce about her time at the 12th, and of course, the Bet ™. (s2, e2)
Jeremy preswick and Emma Carnes run into castle and Beckett one day at the park while walking their dog, Lucy. They chat for a bit. Both Emma and Jeremy are excited because it seems that Jeremy was starting to gain some of his memories back from before the shooting at the art gallery. They’re still living together. Rebuilding what they once had as much as possible with Jeremy’s memory lapse. But that’s ok with Emma. They both seem very happy to have each other. (s2, e11)
Castle decides to do his PI work from home. Alexis helps man the office with Hayley. Rick plays more of a consultant role at this point, seeing as he has three youngsters to watch. The cases he helps with are rather sparse and small but it keeps him occupied and happy. He never fails to get super excited/giddy when he gets a case that somehow intercepts with an investigation from the 12th. Of course, the Castles now have a deadbolt on the apartment door. Given the wild shit they’ve dealt with before, both of them being in the same dangerous line of work, their children’s safety was a bit more of a concern.
Jenny, Kate, Hayley, Lanie, Alexis, and Martha having a girls’ day every so often. Brunch and spa days, mani/pedis, etc. Kate even convinces the hubby to let them use the vacation house in the Hamptons sometimes for a weekend.
The poker games continue! Both the bestsellers crew, and Rick’s “Gotham City” crew, plus Kate. The Castles’ are no longer shy about kicking each other’s asses. Kate wins a good 55% of the time. Out of all of them. Montgomery’s chair is honored with the same rule as with the best sellers crew. Nobody sits there. Sometimes, former captain Gates joins them. She enjoys watching Kate whooping Castle’s ass. Very much.
Annual New Year’s party at the Castles’ place. Jenny & Ryan, little Sarah Grace and Nicholas Javier, Lanie, Esposito, Hayley, Vicram, Alexis, Martha, Jim (Beckett) and of course the Castles’; Rick, Kate and little Lily, Jake and Reece. Sometimes Gates makes a special appearance. The grownups play some of poker once the kids are asleep.
The boys going to games together. Sometimes clubs. Castle lists Javi on his insurance for the Ferrari. Javi likes to try to pick up chicks if he can with the fancy car.
Castle finding out Kate and Jim’s favorite baseball team(s) and getting them all the tickets he can get his hands on. The best seats. Close enough for a chance to catch a flyaway ball… just for Kate. They usually bring the kids. And sometimes Castle.
The whole 12th gang getting tickets/invites to the next broadway play featuring The Martha Rodgers.
Mia “The Nose” Lazlo (s8, e5) sends Kate special order perfumes that she’s helped test. Mia and Castle exchange emails every now and then. Castle always makes sure to send her tickets to his mother’s shows.
Kate and Jim have a tradition to visit the late Johanna Beckett’s grave on her birthday. Sometimes Castle comes along. Sometimes they bring the kids, if they’re up for it. They always bring flowers. Kate, Jim, and the kids like to give her little updates on the things happening in their lives.
The 12th detectives , Lanie and Castle visit Captain Montgomery’s grave, when they can. They keep in touch with his family. Make sure they’re doing ok.
The team going to each other’s kids dance recitals, science fairs, etc. They have play dates with each other.
Summer cook outs/ memorial weekend/ July 4th at the Hamptons with he whole crew! (Or whoever’s available.)
On particularly difficult cases, castle hosts Blue Nights at The Haunt. Cops get drinks free. Though, the 12th crew always get some sort of friends & family discount. There is also a small shrine to Roy behind the bar. Every time any of them visit, they have a drink in his honor.
Dinner dates at Q3. Being good friends with the owner and the new chef really makes the whole experience that much better. Beckett and Madison get to catch up every now and then. And castle gets to try Chef Wong’s oven roasted pork belly glaze that she’d made on Kitchen Wars. (e2, e22)

We visited my family and Reece got to spend three days playing with my mom's 6 month old Cane Corso, Stellah! She played a little with the older boys but as they have very little patience for puppies anymore Stellah was happy to be her companion this weekend. She also ate too much food that was not hers as seen in the bottom left photos and we went to Joann's where she was thoroughly bored. We also took Halloween pictures of all the dogs that I will put in another post 😊

☆☆ ( reece king, 24, cismale, he/him ) Have you seen LAWRENCE ‘LARS’ DUPREE around ? I hear they’re an ESCORT who can sometimes be VAIN & MESSY. ☆☆ never one to truly take into consideration the cares, wants, and needs of others, lars has found a home at eden. of course, it is a bit of a contradiction that an escort -- somebody that is meant to take care of the physical and mental needs of their clients -- can be so profoundly selfish and vain, but that doesn’t really matter! ☆☆
☆☆ it could be that lars’ spoiled upbringing and constant over-validation by his mother and father helped birth the monster that is lars dupree, but i wouldn’t read too much into it! it could also be that his desire for chaos stems from a lack of order in his own childhood/home (and so he internalizes instances where things are neat and petite and ready to eat because he doesn’t know how to process them), but i wouldn’t worry about that either!! ☆☆
☆☆ finally, although he is the physical manifestation of the joanne the scammer identity/social media construct, he often finds himself wishing he could find somebody that he could settle down wit-- nah, i can’t even type that! banter!! he’s an ice-cold little asshole that truly only has his best intentions at heart. gay rights! ☆☆

Best Returning British TV Shows from 2020
https://ift.tt/3h2mtbs
2020 brought many things with it. Brexit. Another iPhone. The 30th anniversary of Fresh Prince Of Bel Air. A Crackerjack revival, the increasingly critical state of our burning planet, the inauguration of a Gangsta Granny rollercoaster at Thorpe Park, and a global pandemic that shut down life as we know it.
A mixed bag, all told.
One thing you can largely rely on in worrying times is television, and below are the top returning British shows that fought their way through the Covid-19 lockdown to come back in 2020.
After Life series 2
Release date: Friday 24th of April, Netflix
Ricky Gervais’ emotional Netflix comedy about a misanthrope widower (Gervais) struggling to cope after the death of his wife (Kerry Godliman) will return for a second six-episode run. Filming began in September 2019, and it arrived on Netflix in April. Diane Morgan and Mandeep Dhillon co-star.
Read more:the best stand-up specials on Netflix here.
Blood series 2
Release date: Monday 27th April, 9pm, Channel 5
2018 welcomed the arrival of Sophie Petzal’s award-winning Irish domestic thriller Blood, which starred Line Of Duty‘s Adrian Dunbar as a widower under suspicion when his estranged daughter Cat (Carolina Main) returns to the family fold. It was tightly scripted with a great cast and told a satisfying and emotional story. Read our interview with its creator here. Over in Ireland, Virgin Media One aired the second series in February 2020, and it’s available on-demand on My5 in the UK here.
Brassic series 2
Release date: Thursday 7th May, Sky One
Shameless’ Danny Brocklehurst and This Is England’s Joe Gilgun worked together on rambunctious Sky comedy Brassic, which is inspired by Gilgun’s own misadventures as an errant youth trying to make a few quid. Michelle Keegan and Damien Molony co-star. NOW TV subscribers can watch the first series here.

Call The Midwife series 10
No, we don’t have much call to talk about it here on Den Of Geek, but Heidi Thomas’ Call The Midwife remains a terrifically warm British drama with a spine of steel when it comes to standing up for the NHS and wading (often literally) through the blood-soaked reality of life for women and children. Series nine finished airing on Sunday nights on BBC One in February, and it’s already been renewed for a 10th and 11th series, taking it into 2022.

New British TV Series from 2020: BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Sky Dramas and More

New British comedy TV series for 2020: BBC, Channel 4, Sky, Dave, Amazon, Netflix
By Louisa Mellor
Famalam series 3
Comedy sketch show Famalam will be back for a third series and a Christmas special in 2020. Series two, which arrived on BBC Three in June 2019, brought more inventively absurd satire with it, and run number three will comprise returns to existing sketches and characters alongside new creations from Samson Kayo and the gang. Stream episodes on BBC iPlayer here.
Friday Night Dinner series 6
Release date: Friday March 27th, 10pm, Channel 4
Robert Popper’s family sitcom starring Simon Bird, Tom Rosenthal, Tamsin Greig and Paul Ritter is making an imminent return to Channel 4 in 2020 for series six. It’s about the Goodmans, a Jewish family who gather every Friday evening for, well, the name says it all. Absurd, funny and silly, it’s a lovely bit of squirrel.
Ghosts series 2
This tremendously fun comedy arrived in 2019 from the cast of Horrible Histories and Yonderland. Happily, it’s been renewed by the BBC for both a second and third series, which guarantees us a dozen more episodes of spectral shenanigans as Alison and Mike (alive) try to keep the ancestral family home going while dealing with an influx of housemates from history (dead). Filming wrapped on series two in March 2020. Stream Ghosts series one on BBC iPlayer.
His Dark Materials series 2
The first series of BBC One/HBO’s Philip Pullman fantasy adaptation took us on an epic journey north as young Lyra (Dafne Keen) travelled in search of her missing friend, and discovered a great deal more besides. A second eight-episode series adapting The Subtle Knife, book two in Pullman’s original trilogy, is in the works and expected to arrive at the end of 2020. A third potentially longer run adapting The Amber Spyglass is yet to be confirmed but that’s almost certainly just a formality at this stage. Read our spoiler-filled series one reviews and more here.
Home series 2
Aired in: February 2020
Rufus Jones’ timely comedy about a family who inadvertently smuggle a Syrian asylum seeker into the UK returning from a French holiday was recommissioned in August 2019. This warm-hearted sitcom starring Jones, Rebekah Staton and  Youssef Kerkour was a little bit drowned out in the schedules (it aired the same week as series two of huge hits Fleabag and Derry Girls) and deserves more applause.
Inside No. 9 series 5
Aired in: February 2020
Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton continue to produce excellence in their inventive, ambitious comedy-drama anthology series Inside No. 9, and its fifth run was no different. Six new half-hour episodes, in which Shearsmith and Pemberton were joined by a raft of co-stars including David Morrissey and Jenna Coleman, aired this spring on BBC Two. Read our spoiler-filled episode reviews here. And listen to the creators’ deep-dive on each episode in their ‘Inside Inside No. 9’ BBC Sounds podcast here.
Keeping Faith series 3
Celia Imrie has joined the cast of BBC Cymru Wales/S4C’s bilingual Welsh drama Keeping Faith (Un Bore Mercher in its original language) for its third and final series. Imrie will join lead Eve Myles as solicitor Faith Howells in an as-yet undisclosed role. The domestic thriller’s first series, if you remember was a huge word-of-mouth hit, eventually making its way to BBC One after unprecedented public interest. The third series will air in 2020 on S4C, and then arrive across the UK on BBCiPlayer from February 2021. Here’s our series one, episode one review.
Killing Eve series 3
Release date: Sunday April 26th.
Well, it had to come back after that cliff-hanger, didn’t it? Based on Luke Jennings’ Codename Villanelle series of novels, international spy thriller Killing Eve has been renewed for a third run. As is now traditional, there’s a new showrunner in charge for the third time around; Phoebe Waller-Bridge handed over to Emerald Fennell who has handed over to See and Fear The Walking Dead‘s Suzanne Heathcote. Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh star. Read our reviews and more here.
Last Tango In Halifax series 5
Aired in: February 2020
Happy Valley and Gentleman Jack creator Sally Wainwright returned to the series that really made her name – BBC One’s Last Tango In Halifax – for a fifth series. It’s the story of former childhood sweethearts Celia and Alan (Anne Reid and Derek Jacobi) who reconnect in their seventies and remarry, knotting together their families led by Sarah Lancashire’s formidable Caroline and Nicola Walker’s hot-headed Gillian. (See our series one to four recap here, and our episode one review here.)
Liar series 2
Release date: Monday 2nd March, ITV1
ITV rewarded this Jack and Harry Williams psychological thriller starring Downton Abbey’s Joanne Froggatt and Horatio Hornblower’s Ioan Gruffudd with a second series renewal in 2018. Expect more twists, turns and talking points.
Man Like Mobeen series 3
Aired in: January 2020
Guz Khan’s terrific Man Like Mobeen returned for a third series on BBC Three this January. It stars Khan as a reformed Brummie drug dealer trying to make an honest living while raising his little sister and boasts a hilarious ensemble cast. Stream all three series now on BBC iPlayer.

Mortimer And Whitehouse: Gone Fishing series 3
A fishing show may seem like a strange choice for this list of mostly high-profile dramas and comedies, but Gone Fishing deserves as much celebration as any of them. That’s thanks to Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse’s natural chemistry as two long-time friends, both of whom have been forced to contemplate their mortality in recent years due to serious heart problems. It’s fishing, yes, but it’s also chat, silliness and genuine human warmth.
Red Dwarf feature-length special
Release date: Thursday 9th April, 9pm, Dave.
Official confirmation from Dave that the boys from the Dwarf were returning for a 90-minute special in 2020 arrived in October 2019. Titled ‘The Promised Land’, it sees the boys from the Dwarf deal with a tyrannical cat leader and three breakaway cat clerics who worship Lister as a god. Along with the special, which is due to air in April, Dave will also be airing retrospectives celebrating the show’s long history on the BBC and since its revival. Here’s what we know so far.
Save Me Too
Release date: Wednesday 1st April, Sky Atlantic and NOW TV
Written by and starring The Walking Dead and Line Of Duty’s Lennie James, Sky Atlantic’s Save Me was one of 2018’s top shows. The crime drama set in a South London estate among a cast of lived-in characters played by the likes of Suranne Jones, Jason Flemyng, Susan Lynch and Stephen Graham, was such a critical success, a second series commission arrived hot on the finale’s heels. Lesley Manville has joined the cast this time around, which is a real treat. Read more about it here.
Tin Star series 3
This will be the third and final instalment of the Jim Worth story on Sky and Amazon. Creator Rowan Joffe will wrap up his tale of an English police officer (Tim Roth) who relocates his family to the Canadian Rockies for a fresh start, but who finds that he can’t stop his old life bleeding into the new.
Read more: Tim Roth interview: Tin Star, Reservoir Dogs and more.
The Crown series 4
Release date: Sunday the 15th of November, Netflix
Olivia Colman took over from Clare Foy as HRH Elizabeth II in The Crown series three. The time jump saw Matt Smith replaced by Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip and Helena Bonham-Carter take the reins from Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret, with Gillian Anderson playing Margaret Thatcher. Series four is expected to arrive in late 2020. Read our spoiler-free series three review here.
The Last Kingdom series 4
Release date: Sunday 26th April, Netflix
Filming started on season four in April 2019 and the first look images were released back in July 2019, and now it’s finally here. The Last Kingdom series four adapts the next two books in Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Stories series, The Pagan Lord and The Empty Throne. Starring Alexander Dreymon as Viking-raised-Saxon Uhtred of Bebbenberg, it’s an action-packed historical drama filled with wit and characters to love. Read our spoiler-filled episode reviews and more.
There She Goes series 2
After receiving critical acclaim for its first run and a Bafta for Jessica Hynes (who is brilliant in this, as she is in most things), There She Goes is returning. Shaun Pye’s excellent family comedy-drama has been renewed for a second series that will air on BBC Two instead of its original home on BBC Four. David Tennant and Jessica Hynes play the parents of Rosie, a little girl with severe learning disabilities in Pye’s unsentimental and honest autobiographically inspired series. Read more about why we loved series one here.
The Split series 2
Aired in: February 2020 (all episodes on iPlayer)
Abi Morgan’s legal family drama starring Nicola Walker (Unforgotten, Last Tango In Halifax) returned for another six episode series early this year. It saw Hannah deal with the aftermath of her night with Christie, while at work she handled the divorce of a high-profile couple with an abusive husband. There’s no word yet on whether a third series has been commissioned, but series two certainly didn’t leave things resolved for the characters.
The Trip series 4: The Trip To Greece
Release date: Tuesday 3rd March 2020, Sky One
Filming began on the fourth series of Michael Winterbottom’s The Trip in 2019, and the new series sees foodies Steve Coogan and Rob Bryden travelling around the dining establishments of Greece while they swap impersonations and provide a glimpse into fictionalised versions of themselves. While the first two series aired on BBC Two, from series three onwards The Trip made the move to Sky Atlantic.
Taskmaster series 10
Joining the Taskmaster and little Alex Horne for series nine of Dave’s excellent Taskmaster were Jo Brand, David Baddiel, Katy Wix, Rose Matafeo and Ed Gamble. It’s all change for series ten onwards as Taskmaster moves from Dave to Channel 4. The new series is expected to air in October 2020. Read more about the move and the new series commissions here.
This Country series 3
Release date: Monday 17th of February, BBC Three 7pm
Following 2018’s one-off special, the Mucklowes are back for a third and final series of mockumentary comedy This Country. That’s another six episodes from creator-siblings Daisy May and Charlie Cooper, who are back starring as feckless cousins Kerry and Kurtan in the “typical Cotswolds village” they call home. Series three might be its best yet.

MMA UK Scottish Awards 2018
MMA UK Scottish Awards 2018 - http://mmauk.net/2019/01/22/mma-uk-scottish-awards-2018/
MMA UK Scottish Awards 2018
2018 has proved to be a successful year for Scottish MMA and with the start of 2019, MMA UK felt the time was right to look back and recognise the Scottish talent.
As ever with awards, there will be some people disappointed with the choices and you could make a case for several fighters in each category. To keep MMA UK on neutral ground, we called on a mix of people from the Scottish MMA scene, coaches, fighters and media to put forward their choice and the fighter with the most mentions from the panel would win.
In 2018, Scotland had 4 UFC fighters, each one recorded a win in the year. Scotland also saw a champion crowned on Cage Warriors in Ross Houston, add to this Scott Malone and Paull McBain recording wins and also a debut win late in the year from Aidan Stephen, it’s fair to say the year ahead is shaping up well for the Scots on Cage Warriors.
Calum Murrie valiantly fought for the EFC title, suffering a broken arm and continuing to fight right to the final bell. We will hopefully see Calum back competing this year.
On the local scene, On Top, Headhunters and Budo continued to offer an opportunity to both amateur and professional fighters.
Several fighters that have competed on the local shows in the past 12 months have signed for Bellator including Chris Bungard, Chris Duncan and Shaun Taylor. Proving how valuable these local events are for the development of Scottish MMA. Some of the top amateurs have faced fighters from Scandinavia, England, Wales and Ireland.
This year to add to the 3 promotions mentioned, The Art of Combat has announced a return, as well as Arena, which gives fighters even more chance to shine.
Moving on to the MMA UK Scottish Awards are as follows:
  Pro Fighter of the year:
Ross Houston
As mentioned previously, Ross won the Cage Warriors Welterweight title in a 5 round epic fight against champion Stefano Paterno. A fight of the year candidate highlighted not only Ross’ skill but his heart and determination after coming through a rocky patch in the fight to lift the title. A memorable night for Ross and Scotland. Ross was a unanimous decision amongst the voting panel.
  Amateur of the year:
Mark Ewen
Mark started the year winning on his local show Headhunters,  beating Nathan Hughes he would then be on his travels across England, fighting a further three times and winning all three fights. He ended the year knocking out Ross Mason in December.
Reece McEwan deserves a mention as he also had several votes for this category, Reece continued his fine form by defending his On Top bantamweight title twice, not content with that, he also competed in K1 and grappling bouts as well.
  Knock out of the year:
Scott Malone
Scott had a great year, he fought three times on Cage Warriors and won each time, starting with a unanimous decision win over Jason Jenkins and ending with an armbar submission against Josh Reed.
This award is for his finish in his second fight of the year when he stopped highly fancied Adam Amarsinghe. Scott showed his all-round game during this fight and dominated from start to finish. Big things are expected from Scott Malone for this year.
Other fighters who received a vote in this category were Jordan Stronge, Mark Ewen and Aaron Towns.
  Sub of the year:
Paul Craig
Paul Craig’s submission win over Magomed Ankalaev has won the best submission of the year.
Paul was facing a defeat against the highly fancied Russian when I’m the final seconds of the fight he produced a winning triangle choke. Not only winning the fight but being handed a new UFC contract. This submission has been mentioned in the running for best submission in awards globally never mind for a Scottish award.
Danny Henry, Aidan Stephen and Mark Ewen also had mentions in this category.
  Performance of the year:
Scott Malone
This was the closest category with Scott edging out Danny Henry to win. Malone was involved in two fights that could have been contenders for the performance of the year but again, like his knock out of the year award, the performance of the year goes to Scott’s fight against Adam Amarasinghe. Amarasinghe had won gold at the 2017 IMMAF European Championships and was 3-0 since turning pro.
Malone dominated with his wrestling in the open stages then went on to beat him standing up, all round great performance from the Dundonian.
Danny Henry just missed out on this award for his performance on UFC London in March when he nearly pulled the neck off of Canadian Hakeem Dawodu in the first round. It will be good to see Danny back in action this year after two great performances in his two UFC fights so far.
Looking back at the great Scottish MMA year just past has whetted our appetite for what is to come this year. Already we have got off to a flier with Joanne Calderwood winning by unanimous decision on the first UFC card of the year. With debuts, next month on Bellator of four Scottish fighters and rumours of other fighters joining the likes of Cage Warriors and EFC the year ahead could be even better.

Climate of the Hunter | Directed by Mickey Reece

Reece’s narratives and characters are complicated and so very human. And, just as you settle into his film, he tilts it “wonderfully off its axis”. Two sisters come to their remote house to reconnect with a friend after twenty years. When the three get together for dinner it has all the makings of a lovely adult melodrama about loneliness and the desire to connect. But then, Reece adds to the mix: Wesley could be a vampire. TICKETS
Swallow | Directed by Carlo Mirabella-Davis

Hunter (Haley Bennett) is a newly pregnant woman whose idyllic existence takes an alarming turn when she develops a compulsion to eat dangerous objects. As her husband (Austin Stowell) and his family tighten their control over her life, she is forced to confront the dark secret behind her uncontrollable obsession. From the producers of “The Rider” and “The Tale”, and executive producer Joe Wright (“Darkest Hour”), SWALLOW plays like a warped fairy tale. Anchored by Bennett’s knockout performance, this bold and atmospheric film marks the feature directorial debut of Carlo Mirabella-Davis. TICKETS

This Chicago School Just Got $1 Million to Build a New School Serving Latino and Low-Income Students
As a toddler, Camilla Ruelas had a life-saving liver transplant. She’s now a sixth-grader at Christopher House Charter School in Chicago, with her sights set on college at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana and later, medical school.
“I hope to learn more about the human body and anatomy to become a doctor someday,” and perform those lifesaving transplants herself, she told a group of VIPs, including Sen. Dick Durbin and Mayor Rahm Emanuel, at the recent groundbreaking for Christopher House’s new middle school.
The new middle school, named for longtime board member JoAnne L. Cicchelli, will include six classrooms, a rooftop garden, a performance arts studio and lab spaces for students to learn more about environmental studies and STEAM–math, science, technology and the arts. In October, the U.S. Department of Education awarded the charter school a $1.2 million grant toward the middle school expansion. Christopher House Charter currently serves about 400 predominantly Latino, low-income students. The new building will allow space for another 200 students.
Christopher House boasts a long track record of supporting young children and their families, coupled with splashy new data showing 75 percent of their 5-year-olds entered kindergarten well-prepared. Their graduates now in the charter elementary school are making some of the highest gains in the state on the tough national PARCC exam. With the new middle school, Christopher House will build in the final piece of the puzzle to ensure its eighth-grade graduates are ready to succeed in Chicago’s top high schools, move on to college and graduate.
Creating a ‘seamless’ transition to kindergarten and beyond
As is common in ambitious charter schools, the classrooms are named after the colleges their teachers went to. The kindergartners in Arizona State University, led by teacher Kelsey Nelson, watch a video that reads aloud the classic children’s story “The Carrot Seed,” about a little boy who plants a seed that grows thanks to his patient care and despite the doubts of his family members.
After a discussion, the kids return to their grouped tables to draw, and where possible write, to show the characters and the setting. They describe the plot by drawing pictures on a story train. Children have “sound cards” and use a system of gestures associated with sounds to help themselves spell words.
“You can just stick with one letter for now,” Nelson tells a boy.
Pictures illustrate the concepts of characters, setting and plot. To illustrate plot, Nelson has drawn a roller coaster with cars marking the beginning, middle and end.
She previously taught in the preschool program, where teachers are “very prepared,” she observes. Nelson herself taught about a quarter of her current kindergartners as preschoolers. At the end of every school year, preschool teachers meet with the kindergarten teachers to give them a heads-up about the children they will be teaching and plan support strategies as needed.
“It’s seamless,” Nelson says of the transition. Although she still faces a spectrum of academic and social-emotional preparedness in her classroom, “the band is narrower. Especially from the preschool, the kids are much more prepared, especially socially and emotionally. Their families are involved. A lot of them are really excited to learn.”
That continuity persists beyond the kindergarten year. Fourth-grade teacher Jordan Reece taught her current students before, as second-graders.
“I know families really well. There’s an immediate level of trust,” she says. In her current class, only three students left between second and fourth grade. Overall, about 43 percent of the elementary school’s students started as preschoolers.
Recently, Christopher House has made more deliberate efforts to continue excellent practices and curriculum from the preschool into the early grades. The preschool follows the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education, elements of which now continue upward through second grade. To deepen their knowledge of the approach, early elementary teachers (grades K-2) traveled to Reggio Emilia for a week-long residency.
The Reggio Emilia influence shows up most obviously during STEAM time, when student questions and interests help determine what to study. Reggio Emilia also emphasizes observation, arts and a well-organized classroom environment.
Grateful parents appreciate the continuity
Parent Shavon Hale has been involved with Christopher House since she became pregnant with her second child. Her older child is now a first-grader at the elementary school. Hale serves as the liaison from the Parent Policy Committee to the Christopher House board of directors. The experience has served her well, she says.
“I feel like my voice is really heard,” she says. “I know how to fundraise, run a committee and read a budget. I know what’s going on and I’m really appreciative.”
She also deeply appreciates the experience her children are having, especially compared to her own experiences as an elementary student. “We didn’t have the technology they have now. We had really old books, no computers. It was a really old school. The teachers were old. It was just stuck, old-fashioned.”
She’s grateful her children are experiencing 21st-century learning and looks forward to a state-of-the-art STEAM lab in the middle school. “Being a low to moderate-income family, we’re getting a lot of advantages” at Christopher House. “I’d like to keep them for as long as possible.”
