Something I really love about TLT1 is that everyone is out here fully cradling Wu Xie? Hugging his small emo-belt-clad body to their chests?
Like the squad takes one (1) look at this soft twink and is immediately on board with protecting him at all costs (relatable). And they decide to express that decision by just ... wrapping their arms around him at every opportunity. Idk but I love it!!
Anyway this was all just an excuse to do a mood board of Wu Xie being held in episode 5:

I’m rewatching a bit of TLTR for a screencap I need for another post and god I just ... forgot how heartbreaking this scene is? And how the Iron Triangle’s positions tell us so much about where their heads are at?
Wu Xie, sick in bed, centered under both the light and focus of the other two. Also: the repeated visual metaphor of barriers (the mosquito netting, his use of files to avoid looking at Pangzi) — fitting, given how he has been (and will continue to) cover up the severity of his illness, blocking even those who love him from the innermost reality of his body
Pangzi, devastated and pissed, probably more livid than he has other been. Yet still caring for Wu Xie in one of the few ways he can — and is it a coincidence that he picks up Wu Xie’s x-ray and examines it before this scene? That he comes face to face with the sheer scope of how beyond his mortal grasp Wu Xie’s condition is moments before this? Pangzi is a man of action being faced with something utterly terrifying: the slow death of someone he loves by something entirely outside of his control. And he’s mad, at Wu Xie and Wu Xie’s lungs and probably even Xiao-ge, but he is a man who will always grasp what he can do in both his hands. And for now, he can feed Wu Xie. It’s not enough, and it doesn’t touch the hurt deep inside him, but it’s a start.
Xiao-ge...oh Xiao-ge. Sentry on the edge as he so often is, but facing in this time instead of out. Both guarding and sharing in this moment of painful vulnerability. Xiao-ge has always know he would outlive Wu Xie — but who thought it would be like this?

Tomb of the Sea | Wu Xie and Li Cu In the Desert
Watching this scene, it really struck me how Wu Xie passes out reaching desperately towards Li Cu. It makes me wonder: what does Wu Xie think when his knees hit the sand?
Does he see himself and Li Cu overlap for a hazy moment? Do you think, in a moment of delirium, he thinks about how they were both too young to die like this (for Li Cu to pass out in the desert and for Wu Xie to choke on generations of schemes)?
In Ten Years Later, Wu Xie says “I wasn’t afraid of death now, but more afraid that I wouldn’t achieve my goal.” But when Wu Xie collapses in the desert, do you think he forgets to stop caring about his own body for a moment?
Do you think the wind on his face and sand in his mouth throw him back to Tamuto - to a time when his body was more than a vessel for a mission? Does he return, even if just for a moment, to a time when death meant both so much more and so much less?
Before he loses consciousness, do you think Wu Xie knows, without the shadow of a doubt, that those friends who rescued him from the Gobi sands won’t be able to help him now? Does he regret? Or does he feel relief? Or something in between?
And later, after the rescue, when he finally swam back to consciousness at the inn, do you think he had a brief, incandescent moment where he forgot when and where he was?
Do you think he scanned the room for a familiar black hood or perked his ears for a comforting, loud laugh? And when he found only empty silence instead, do you think Wu Xie felt his heart collapse chamber by chamber, folds and creases lining his chest as his lungs creaked like rotten floorboards?
Do you think Wu Xie wished, deeply and desperately and violently and guiltily, that he hadn’t woken up at all?

What could ten years change?
Small Gif 1 (upper left in 2x2 square): The Iron Triangle slumped together against a rocky background. Pangzi is on the outer left, Wu Xie is in the middle looking exhausted and worse for wear, and Xiao-ge is on the outer right. Pangzi leans into Wu Xie and says, “hit me if you don’t believe me.” Wu Xie promptly slaps him without opening his eyes or sitting up. Disgruntled, Pangzi exclaims, “why didn’t you hit him?” while gesturing at Zhang Qiling.

Disgruntled, Pangzi exclaims, “why didn’t you hit him?” while gesturing at Zhang Qiling.
Small Gif 2 (upper right in 2x2 square): Pangzi, out of breath and disheveled with dirt streaked on his face, looks satisfied before looking up with an expression of worry and shock. He yells “Wu Xie! Be careful!” The camera shows Wu Xie turn to see a Mi Lu Tou figure coming towards him. Before it can reach him, Pangzi sprints in between them and expertly throws the Mi Lu Tou so that it lands with a cloud of dust on its back.
Small Gif 3 (bottom left in 2x2 square): Pangzi and Wu Xie look at a cave wall, while Wu Xie holds a lighted torch. Pangzi says, “I finally have someone to talk to!” He turns to point back towards Xiao-ge, who is crouching by the fire on the other side of the room, and says, “You know Zhang (Xiaoge) won’t speak more than 3 sentences.” Wu Xie looks forward with a big, toothy grin before looking back towards Xiao-ge as Pangzi exaggeratedly says, “I was so depressed.”
Small Gif 4 (bottom right in 2x2 square): Pangzi, covered in muddy streaks and sitting in a muddy pile in the rainforest, looks up at Wu Xie and Xiao-ge (who are similarly muddy) and says, “It’s spread evenly right?” Xiao-ge and Wu Xie look at each other. Wu Xie grins widely and holds up his hand for Xiao-ge to high five. Xiao-ge looks down at Wu Xie’s offered hand and smirks / half smiles. Wu Xie looks crestfallen, and then rebounds with an exaggerated fist pump and gleeful whoop.
Large Bottom Gif: Back to Wu Xie and Li Cu, visibly dirty and beat up, sitting near each other leaning against a stone pillar. Wu Xie is shining his flashlight somewhat near the camera lens, so everything looks a little washed out. Li Cu is looking at him, but Wu Xie is looking forward and somewhat down as he says, “Every time I’m scared, I will think of them.”

I’m just thinking a lot about PingXie in Nan Pai San Shu’s ending notes to Ten Years Later.
I’m thinking about how Wu Xie brings the warmth of the world to Zhang Qiling, and about how Zhang Qiling in turn brings Wu Xie a sense of fascination, intrigue, and (ironically?) tranquility.
I’m thinking about how the two of them are “predestined to meet.” How they ultimately complete each other’s duties - Zhang Qiling takes Wu Xie’s place at the Gate, and Wu Xie concludes the Zhang family’s mission against the Wangs.
I’m thinking about how curiosity defines and drives Wu Xie throughout DMBJ. I’m thinking about how his obsessive curiosity draws him to Zhang Qiling...and about how his love for Zhang Qiling overcomes that aching hum in his mind on the eve of reunion.
I’m thinking about what it means for Zhang Qiling to be Wu Xie’s “demon,” as Wang Meng puts it. What it means to be haunted by someone you love.
I’m thinking of how simply hearing Xiao-ge’s nickname on another man’s tongue in Sha Hai can set Wu Xie off in anger and grief...and about how finding a sign left by Xiao-ge can give Wu Xie “a sense of security that I hadn’t felt in many years suddenly rose up from the bottom of my heart.”
In the end, I think, perhaps, for PingXie, the act of loving is inherently to be, “on one hand, everyone is happy; on the other hand, everything is burning.”
Image ID under cut ❤️
Image 2 (Gif): A series of scenes of Zhang Qiling staring pensively alone. The first scene is him in wood room, flicking his gaze down. The second scene shows him slightly inclining his head towards Wu Xie behind him (but not actually turning around). The third scene shows him staring up at the night sky and speaking while illuminated by firelight. The quote “I’m a man without past and future. Even if I vanish from the surface of earth, no one would notice,” runs along the bottom of the gif.

Image 4 (Gif / on the same line as Image 5): Wu Xie and Zhang Qiling from TLT3 sitting togerher in the rainforest eating, covered in mud. Zhang Qiling looks exhausted. Wu Xie lifts his hand to pat it reassuringly on Zhang Qiling’s shoulder; ZQL looks back at him in acknowledgment. Xiao Yuliang is giving a voice over to the scene: “He met Wu Xie. Despite being lost and has always been searching, he has someone beside him.”
Image 5 (gif / on the same line as Image 4): A-Ning talking to Wu Xie (who we can see from behind on the far left of frame) against a desert rock background. She says, “Zhang (Xiao-ge) will ignore everyone but you.”
Image 6: A text screenshot: “Buddha said that if two people are predestined, they can meet unexpectedly, even after ten years of separation.”
Image 7 (gif): Wu Xie and Zhang Qiling hiking through a forest. Wu Xie trips, his arms flailing, but Zhang Qiling catches him before he falls. The two share a long look, and Wu Xie smiles slightly. Caption: “We have been through a lot together.”
Image 8: A text screenshot: “Fate is often double sided. On one hand, everyone is happy; on the other hand, everything is burning. In front of the bronze door, Wu Xie finally realized his original intention. He can withstand every minute and every second after those ten long years, and let go of his obsession like the passing rain. He doesn’t care about the truth behind this door, or where Zhang Qiling came from, or even if he’s the same person. All he cares about is the ‘Poker-Face’ in his heart.”
Image 9 (gif, on the same row as image 10): Wu Xie in a light blue jacket looking earnest against a night backdrop. His face is illuminated by campfire light, and he is saying, “I’d notice if you disappeared.”
Image 10 (gif, on the same row as image 9): A flashback to Zhang Qiling looking concerned and gently cradling / tapping Wu Xie’s head after Wu Xie appears to have passed out on him. The scene fades to Wu Xie in different clothing speaking to Panma (off screen); he is saying, “I know better than anyone what kind of person he is.”

Obviously we all love the “If you’re gone, at least I’ll know” line!! It’s a classic!! But I kind of love the argument leading up to it, too?? And I think it also has a lot of PingXie connotations??
Tumblr media
We start with Wu Xie complaining about how he keeps getting left in the dark. His words feel almost childish, like a petulant toddler who is mad he can’t sit at the grown up’s table >:( Which makes sense — he’s really in his child self!! He feels isolated, hurt, and abandoned by those he care about, and he keeps lashing out in search of acknowledgment.
Tumblr media
This tactic hasn’t really been working for Wu Xie yet, but in this scene ZQL is, for the first time that day, actually pissed. His eyebrows? Knitted.
Tumblr media
Yet! Wu Xie responds to Glare Eyes McGee by essentially softening his facial expressions!! His eyes widen, his lips open, and he looks almost pleading.
After all, he’s been prodding at ZQL’s buttons all day. He pushed him against a car!! He stole his hoodie cord!! And now he finally has ZQL’s attention. You can almost taste how desperate Wu Xie is to get through to him, to get some kind of feedback.
Tumblr media
And ZQL delivers! He finally reaches back towards Wu Xie. He actually engages with Wu Xie’s comments, instead of blowing them off, and he even names his own experiences!
Tumblr media
As soon as ZQL engages with him, Wu Xie backs down. He pauses, reflects, and apologizes. In the end, I think Wu Xie really just wanted ZQL to actually hear him — to hear that Wu Xie has opinions and reactions and feelings about ZQL’s decisions!
Wu Xie also acknowledges ZQL in return👇
Tumblr media
~*~ 🐸 Concluding Thoughts 🐸 ~*~
I think it’s these moments of vulnerability and mutual acknowledgment that enable what comes next, aka the triple hitter of:
“If you’re gone, at least I will know.”
“I’m on your side.”
“Your problems have already become my problems.”
It’s no accident that all of three of these lines center around the fulcrum of mutual effect, or how they each react to the other!! Interestingly, these three lines also hint at the big conflicts still hindering authentic emotional intimacy between the two of them (ie ZQL’s lack of self conception as human).
TL;DR, this argument sets up some of the essential conflicts of ~personhood~ (in relation to self and to other) undergirding PingXie’s relationship, romantic or otherwise, at the beginning of the series ‼️‼️
