I’m reading the last book in The Old Kingdom series, Goldenhand, and there’s a very poor taste in my mouth over Ferin’s treatment tbh. I hate to be like this, but it’s hard for me to look past the fact that this young, described as a dark black girl is used as an offering to an evil spirit, has her leg amputated, and repeatedly tries to not show any pain as no one in her tribe shows ‘weakness.’ On top of that, the 20 tribes are presented in a way that makes them look unintelligent and less advanced than the reigning kingdom; they know nothing of Charter Magic, they fight with sword and bow on horseback, they are described as a people who will turn against each other ‘like they usually do without greater direction,’ and the fact that a bunch of primarily black groups of people are being lead to attack the Kingdom is just.... idk. Maybe I’m reading into it too much, but what most upsets me is that it seems, after all of this, after going through so much hardship, losing a limb, feeling like she is the cause of many villagers deaths, Ferin is tossed aside - she delivers her message and that is, for the most part, it. She does not get to travel with Lireal to the outer lands to find Chlorr’s body. She is simply pushed to the side.

When Sabriel says in death that the offerings will lead the way, I though that Ferin, this young, smart, and obviously traumatized character would go along with them, to help get rid of Chlorr’s body, to remain a great part of the story. That this black character would get to remain a main focus amongst the all white cast (yes, the Clayr are also dark skinned but they never come into nearly as main a role as Ferin, and Lireal, who’s part Clayr, is extremely pale for whatever reason). It’s just disappointing to see how Ferin’s character is treated after all she goes through.

#judas.txt #wow let me rant about a fandom that no one cares about lol #also im. not completely finished with goldenhand so maybe itll wrap up her character arc a bit better than it has so far #its just upsetting to see how much ferin goes through with so little reward. like yes lireal also lost a limb and her only friend and felt #very lonely growing up but #ferin feom the day she was born was told to not look forward to a future #that her fate was decided and she would either give her body up to chlorr or die #she was kept away from the rest of her people #and then shes forced to leave her home something shes never done in order to deliver a message that will be the only thing that saves the #entire kingdom. because otherwise lireal and sabriel would know nothing and be able to do nothing #she almost freezes to death. she feels she is at fault for the death of one of her saviors husband. #shes the reason an entire town is dispersed. she loses her leg after pushing her body too far. #her entire tribe is at risk of being wiped out since theyll be the first to be wiped out in the war. #and what does she get so far? a thank you. to be thrown into another battle. to have a new leg made by sam. #im sure shell get more in return by the end of the story but ferin is placed to the side to focus on lireal and nicks love story
