MK Stalin counters PM over Katchatheevu row, ‘What steps have you taken?’
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, hitting back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his allegations against DMK in the Katchatheevu controversy, questioned whether the central government has taken any steps in the past ten years to reclaim the island from Sri Lanka.
Tumblr media
PM Modi, on Sunday, alleged that the Congress government, under former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, "callously gave away" the strategic Katchatheevu island to Sri Lanka and accused the party of "weakening" the country's integrity and interests. A day later, he said, new details "have unmasked DMK’s double standards totally" and claimed that MK Stalin’s party has done "NOTHING to safeguard Tamil Nadu’s interests”.
In response, the DMK chief questioned PM Modi and mentioned that he had demanded the Prime Minister to retrieve the island. He also asked whether PM Modi had made any demands in this regard when he visited the head of the Sri Lankan government.
"When the BJP came to power, what did it say in the SC regarding Katchatheevu? They said that we would have to engage in a battle with Sri Lanka if we wanted to get the island back. In the last ten years, how many times has Modi travelled to Sri Lanka? Did he ever demand from them that Katchatheevu should be returned to us? When he met the head of the state of Sri Lanka, did he tell them that Katchatheevu belongs to India? He didn’t mention Katchatheevu on all those occasions," Stalin said.
"The PM who remembers very clearly the events that occurred during the time of Nehru and Indira Gandhi, I want to ask him if he remembers something that happened just two years ago. When he came for an event in Chennai, I presented several demands, and one of the first demands I made was to retrieve Katchatheevu. Do you recall this? Did you even read the memorandum I gave?" the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister added.
He also stated that raking up the Katchatheevu issue has now backfired on the BJP. “This issue has turned against them. They put their hands on the beehive, and now they are trying to escape from it,” he mentioned.
Stalin also claimed that the External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, when he was the foreign secretary, in an RTI reply in 2015 claimed Katchatheevu is not a part of India and the party is bringing up the matter due to election.
He also asked the Prime Minister who is “crying over Katchatheevu now” had ever said a word of condemnation against Sri Lanka for “harassing and attacking” fishermen from India.
Meanwhile, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman accused DMK of spreading a false campaign on Katchatheevu and for making "irresponsible" statements on the issue. She said the late M Karunanidhi, who was DMK president and Tamil Nadu chief minister at the time in the 1970s, was aware of the then-ruling Congress's move but did not object, she said.

India’s political controversy! Congress ‘gave away’ an island to Sri Lanka!!? Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently disclosed that, as per documents acquired by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) through a Right to Information (RTI) request, the Congress party allegedly, in a manner deemed 'callous' and unlawful, relinquished control of the island of Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka back in 1974!
For those who may not be familiar, Katchatheevu island, situated amidst the waters separating India and Sri Lanka, holds significant value among the local populace due to its abundant fishing resources. Historically, the island was encompassed within the Ramnad zamindari and was officially annexed into Tamil Nadu in 1947, further underlining its regional significance.
Nevertheless, Sri Lanka, known as Ceylon at the time, disputed this claim, leading to conflicts and violent confrontations among inhabitants from both regions. This dispute persisted for several decades before a resolution was reached, resulting in the eventual transfer of control to Sri Lanka as part of a negotiated agreement.
Here’s where the issue soured. As per the documents, both lawmakers and residents vehemently opposed the transfer, labeling it as illegitimate due to the absence of parliamentary approval. Additionally, the Opposition criticized Indira Gandhi's administration for failing to counter Sri Lanka's persistent and provocative assertions regarding India's sovereignty over the island. There was also news of a hidden deal between Indira Gandhi and her Ceylonese counterpart which could be why neither side did anything despite the protests! Today, the BJP has slammed both the Congress and DMK for being untrustworthy, caring only for their families, and betraying the people of India! Congress has hit out claiming that it was to ‘build friendly relations’ while claiming this was BJP’s latest attempt to weaken the Opposition!! What do you think? Is this another political tactic by the BJP? Or is it trying to expose the Congress’ sins?? Follow Jobaaj Stories (the media arm of Jobaaj.com Group) for more.

PM Modi kickstarts his Lok Sabha election Campaign from Meerut city
Bhartiya Janta Party’s Lok Sabha Election Campaign was kickstarted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday from Meerut city in Uttar Pradesh. For the 2014 and 2019 elections, PM Modi chose Meerut only to be the first city to start his election campaign.
PM Modi asserted that the upcoming elections aren’t targeted at choosing the next Prime Minister of India but a beginning of making ‘Viksit Bharat’. "Our government is getting ready for its third term,” he said.
“We are creating a roadmap for the next five years. We are working on the big decisions we need to make in the first 100 days of our next term. The momentum of development created in the last 10 years, will move ahead with more speed,” he added.
Attacking the Congress government for its ‘anti-national acts’ he also referred to Katchatheevu island in Tamil Nadu, off the coast of India. "This island is extremely important from the perspective of national security. When the country became independent, we had this island, and it was an integral part of India but 4-5 decades ago, Congress said that this Island was of no use and cut off a part of Maa Bharti and separated it from India."
Addressing the gathering in Meerut, PM Modi said, “I have a special relationship with Meerut. I had started my election campaign for the 2014 and 2019 (Lok Sabha) polls from Meerut only. And now, the first rally for the 2024 elections is also being organised in Meerut. The 2024 Lok Sabha elections is not an election to elect the government, but to make a 'Viksit Bharat.'

RAMANATHAPURAM: A total of three boats including one from Rameswaram were caught by the Sri Lankan Navy in the mid-night hours for alleged violation of the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) and fishing in the island nation’s waters off Delft Island near Neduntheevu.
About 17 fishermen including 8 from Rameswaram were arrested and three boats were seized by the SL Navy which are said to be taken to Kankesanturai for further action.
About 500 boats from Rameswaram had ventured into the sea on Wednesday. Sources said a few of them, who were involved in fishing activities, were chased off by the Sri Lankan Navy during the night hours. Three boats which carried 17 fishermen were captured for allegedly violating the IMBL.
Local sources said that one of the boats was from Rameswaram and carried 8 fishermen who identified as Antony (46) owner of the boat, Arun (37), Murugan (43), Kingston (37), Kirton (40), Murugan (40), Karlmarcus (41), and Remotan (22) all belong to Thangachimadam and Rameswaram areas.
Sri Lankan Navy officials said that The Sri Lanka Navy conducted a special operation to chase away Indian poaching trawlers from Sri Lankan waters on the evening of 13 September 2023. Northern Naval Command deployed Fast Attack Craft of the 04th Fast Attack Flotilla to chase away a cluster of Indian poaching trawlers, after having spotted they were engaging in illegal fishing in Sri Lankan waters off the Kakarathivu Island and Kovilan Lighthouse on 13th September. In this operation, the Navy held 3 Indian poaching trawlers that continued to remain in island waters, with 17 Indian fishers aboard. The 3 poaching trawlers together with 17 Indian fishermen were brought to the port of Kankasanthurei and they will be handed over to the Fisheries Inspector of Mailadi for onward legal proceedings.
Including the poaching trawlers held in this operation, the Sri Lanka Navy has seized 17 Indian poaching trawlers and apprehended 110 Indian fishermen thus far in 2023. Following these apprehensions, the poaching trawlers and fishermen have been handed over to relevant authorities for legal action.
Fishermen association leader from Rameswaram Emerald alleged that though action towards releasing the fishermen is being taken no action was taken in the past couple of years to retrieve the seized boats, which leaves boat owners in massive debt and leaves fishers without work. Fishermen association demands the union government to take action to retrieve the boats and also to host meetings with the Sri Lankan authorities to solve the Katchatheevu issues so that fishermen from both countries can fish peacefully.

Context: On August 18, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin revived the debate over Katchatheevu, an uninhabited and barren 285 acre islet about 14 nautical miles off Rameswaram. INDIRA'S KATCHATHEEVU SACRILEGE.
Know about Katchatheevu, erstwhile Indian island, jointly administered by Ind-SL pre-independence, that Indira Gandhi 'gifted' away to SL, purportedly over her ('great' indeed) friendship with then SL PM Mrs Bandarnaike, while drawing intl borders in 1975.
A controversial aspect of this decision not discussed yet, is how a territory of India (also shown by our officially having 'gifted' it away) was done so, in Emergency times, w/o Parliamentary consent, by giving it away as 'disputed land', even in non-war times!
Sacrilege.
