this is mostly for me but I guess y'all can use it if u want

some VERY rough sketches + rambling musings about the structure of muriel's hut below the cut. i might clean this up digitally if i feel like it but probably not

i was trying to figure out how muriel's hut is built and i JUST noticed that there's a hill behind his house, like so:

and now i feel dumb for just realizing that his house isn't just sitting beneath the tree; it's probably built partway into the hill itself, kind of like a hobbit hole!

so if asra and muriel built the hut themselves (which they might not have but i like to think they did, especially because it's specifically mentioned that the way it's built takes into account muriel's height) it probably started out like this:

maybe the tree got partially uprooted, and the soil beneath it eventually eroded, leaving a kind of natural shelter. and from there they hollowed it out a bit more and hauled rocks to make the walls and dug out the hearth themselves and tHAT TAKES SOME REAL DEDICATION AND RESOURCEFULNESS Y'ALL AND THEY PROBABLY DID IT WHILE THEY WERE STILL TEENS AND IT WAS HARD HECKIN WORK BUT THEY DID IT ANYWAY AND PERSONALLY I THINK THAT'S BRILLIANT OF THEM AND I'M VERY PROUD OF THEM 😭😭😭

anyway. as for the interior here's what we know of it:

the hut is small enough that what we see in the official background art is pretty much all of it but if i had to take a guess

here's the corner of the room we'd see from the bed:

the steps going down from the door are. probably not canon, but we know the ceiling of the hut is high enough that muriel (thankfully) doesn't have to constantly duck in his own home. but because of, y'know, the tree being sort of in the way, there's a limit to how high asra and muriel could have made the ceiling (even if they did use magic to kind of. coax the roots out of the way) and it would have been easier to just sink the floor. so that's why i think it's lower than ground level

also inanna's bed is described as being in the darkest corner of the hut, so i'm guessing it's the farthest corner from the fireplace?? of course she's still gonna sneak into muriel's bed and of course he's gonna let her but anyway yeah that's supposed to be her bed right there in the left corner

aaaand here's the corner on the other side of the hearth, opposite the bed:

that's asra's stuff. some blankets and pillows (yes, pillows, plural, this is asra we're talking about) and furs for a makeshift bed in case he's sleeping over. probably some clothes too, and maybe old trinkets from their shared childhood. yes he keeps some stuff at muriel's don't fight me on this it's practically canon:

so YES asra keeps stuff and muriel's house and YES muriel canonically steals asra's blankets to sleep with while he's gone i'm not making this up y'all

anyway yeah that's all i can think of right now so tell me if i missed anything or if y'all have thoughts about it

right so, muriel was 100% behind asrei having a kid together. like he was there for them the whole way (and i mean THE WHOLE WAY 😏😏😏)

but the closer rei gets to her due date the more nervous muriel becomes because like. the kid won’t really be his, right? like yeah he’s gonna help asrei raise them and they’re still gonna call him dad but like. not really, right???

WRONG

as soon as muriel gets to hold gale his brain immediately goes like, “MINE”

because yeah sure they have asra’s hair and eye color, and the shape of rei’s eyes and nose and mouth, and they got absolutely nothing from him but look at them. they’re beautiful. they’re perfect. they clutch at his finger with a tiny fist and he knows, he knows, they’re his, too

when asmurei all go out muriel usually gets kid-carrying duty because he can carry gale in one arm no big deal. when gale is a lil older muriel lets them sit on his shoulders and they love it because they like to feel tall. muriel loves it too because he knows there’s no safer place for his kid to be

(also when they hold onto him their arms end up covering his ears and he likes it because it makes the noise less overwhelming for him)

muriel teaches them to read runes and is very proud when they pick it up quickly, although, the very very first thing he teaches them is how to make charms and protections, and he makes sure they’re proficient at it before he teaches them anything else. he just wants them to be safe above all else uwu

BONUS:

inanna is a very proud grandma. also a very protective grandma. inanna is basically parent #4. inanna used to be miffed that there was no more space for her on the bed after muriel moves in with asra and rei but now there’s a tiny human with their own big bed so jackpot. inanna sleeps in gale’s bed every night and really this is the ideal arrangement for everybody. gale is 100% safe with their wolf grandma and now asmurei can all cuddle in peace
