Prompt #13: Oneirophrenia
End of Stormblood/Start of Shadowbringers spoilers.
At last, after a long and bloody battle, Luka and Laila had managed to fell Elidibus. Had it not been for the aid of their allies, he was sure he would’ve been the one to fall. As Zenos--Elidibus, he chided himself--collapsed before him, he fell to a knee himself. He was certain he was mostly healed from their fight with Seiryu, but it wasn’t the same as before. He hit his limit so much sooner. Was this truly the best he could do?
He could tell it took Laila what little she had left to remain standing, her gun visibly shaking in her hand. But as he looked to her face, he realized it had been from shock--for Elidibus had risen again before them.
“Your Mother chose her champions well. But it will not be enough.”
Damn it. He had hoped that had been enough to slow the Ascian, of course it wouldn’t slay it, but for him to rise again so easily? His grip on his sword tightened.
“Laila, you need to take the others and run,” Luka rose unsteadily, taking a staggered step in front of her.
“What, are you joking? I’m not leaving you.” He felt a hand on his back as she stepped beside him, shooting a smile full of projected confidence. “We’re in this together.”
“How quaint. It seems you will die together as well.” The moment was broken by Elidibus, stepping forward once again with sword drawn. Luka steeled himself, took a deep breath and stepped forward--
Only to be struck by an intense, dizzying vertigo, and a sharp ringing filling his head. He barely managed to drive his sword into the dirt to keep steady, trembling hands trying to hold on to his sword as it felt as if his mind was being torn away from the world. He turned to see Laila suffering the same fate. As if this, whatever it is, hadn’t taken enough from them already, and now it would cost them their lives.
“Oh? It would seem someone is calling you. Unfortunately, it is too late.”
The spinning intensified, so much he felt as if he were being torn apart. Gods, please… he barely managed to form a silent plea, and fell atop Laila.
-----
It seemed as if he were everywhere and nowhere all at once.
Luka opened his eyes, not sure if it was moments or years later, surrounded by an inky blackness. Is this death? He turned, looking for any sign of anything at all--and as he blinked, eyes becoming accustomed to the faint, distant light of countless shimmering shards. Just as he began to get his bearings, he felt himself being pulled--yanked, really--towards them.
In an instant, he was surrounded by crystals of all sizes. Moving too fast to see any one too clearly, he could make out environments and faces in the facets as he flew by. Some repeated enough for him to recognize: Alphinaud and Alisaie, the other Scions, Aymeric...yet there were many and more of his partner, Lailathwen. As he was pulled towards one, it seemed within reach; he threw out his hand, just barely catching the tip of it with his finger. A scene flashed through his mind, clearer than a memory.
He found himself in the Waking Sands, watching from afar as a much younger version of himself sat at a makeshift desk busying himself with paperwork. He watched as Lailathwen entered, confident and carefree, and scanned the room before going over to bother his other self. Through the din of the other Scions, he managed to hear the conversation as though it was right in his ear.
“I’m occupied.”
“Well, hello to you too!” She huffed, sounding playfully hurt as she sat on the desk beside him. “I haven’t seen you around here before.”
“I keep to myself.”
“Well! Allow me the liberty to introduce myself. I am Lailathwen Nerayna, hero of Gridania, possessor of the Echo, conjurer extraordinaire! You may have heard of me?”
His other self seemed to pause, before turning to glare at the girl. “So you’re the one I’ve been waiting on for hours!”
Luka held back a laugh. They really hadn’t gotten on well at all at first, but now, he truly...loved her. Yet as suddenly as he had entered the memory, it was gone, as a bright light swelled into blinding. He tried to reach out again, pull back that memory, but he felt it slip away.
-----
He came to as quick as a blink.
“At last, I found you.”
The dark marble floor below him felt refreshingly cool, but even so, he pushed himself up to see a room of gold and crystal. The concern and confusion must have been clear on his face, as the hooded figure before him spoke once more.
“There’s no cause for alarm. The battle is over, your danger passed. But your work is not yet done.”

Better With Age; Lailathwen Leblanc
Tumblr media
"Me, at twenty? Well, that would've been a couple years before I got caught up in the Scion's business and everything that entails. I'd been getting by doin' odd jobs here are there, fending for myself after striking out of my own. Had a bit of a falling out with my parents you see, they weren't exactly pleased by my distaste of tribal tradition and my new-found individuality. One thing led to another, and it became pretty clear the tribe didn't have a place for someone like me, so I had to go elsewhere.
"Anyroad, so I was out of my own. Livin' was tough, but you scrimp, and save, and do what you gotta to survive. Eventually, I got it into my head that life would be better out in the Shroud—no jackbooted thugs stomping about, lush greenery so you'd never go hungry, proper cities where you could live out your days in peace. Who wouldn't want a piece of that? 'Course, there was one thing standing in the way of that, and a big one too—Baelsar's blasted Wall.
"Now, it's not easy to get across the Wall, obviously, but not impossible if you believe the stories. Every now and then, you’d get rumours of sods who’d found a way across to where the grass is greener, and we ate it up. When there wasn’t enough to fill our bellies, we’d find sustenance in the tales of people reaching freedom. Now, I’ve no idea whether any of those stories were true, mind you. I’m more inclined nowadays to think they were intentional cover for folks “disappeared” by the Empire, so nobody gets inclined to ask too many questions. But, after enough time, I decided I was gonna be the next one to cross over.
“You’ve seen the Wall, yeah? It’s like if you took a Garlean Castrum, and then just made a row of them as far as you could see. This wasn’t hopping over someone’s picket fence. And we weren’t allowed within a hundred yalms of the thing, only the Legion could go inside. So I figure, if only Garlean Soldiers are allowed inside, then I needed to get recruited by the XIVth Legion. Then I could hop the wall and wave that life behind.
"'Course, getting recruited wasn’t exactly a simple task either. With no active campaigns in the region, the XIVth wasn’t in dire need of soldiers, and had become picky in who they recruited. I, meanwhile, had spurned just about everything my parents had encouraged me to do, which had unfortunately included lessons in combat, so I wasn’t much in a fight. Still, I was determined, so I insisted to my local Prius Prior that the let me sign on with them. I had no interest in bravely serving Garlemald, to be clear, my intentions were solely to escape, but after a lifetime of lying about who you are, you get pretty good at concealing your true allegiances. After a moon or so of pestering him day after day about it, eventually he conceded me an opportunity: I could go one-on-one with one of their fresh recruits, and if I beat him, I’d be allowed to sign on.
"Now, as mentioned, I had no experience in a fight. I’d started learning what I could from whoever would give the the time of day, but I knew on the day of my match I’d be nowhere near the level of my opponent. Still, I had to try. So when I was introduced to the towering pure-blooded Garlean man, I knew I was in for trouble. I’ll save you the play-by-play, but naturally I got thrashed. I did land a blow on him, near the end. He was coming at me, blunted training sword at the ready. And then, just in a flash of my mind’s eye, I saw exactly what he was going to do, how he was going to swing and where it was going to hit me. In a instant, I dodged behind him, and stuck him along his back. I didn’t know it at the time, but the Echo had let me see what was coming, and let me act on it. I’d been having visions occasionally for a year or so by that point, but never anything like that.
"Anyway, so I landed one strike on him, then he whirled around a knocked me to the dirt with a final blow, sword spinning away from my hand. I’d lost. I could see the Pilus clapping smugly, clearly ready to be rid of me, but my sparring partner held up his hand. ‘She shows potential. I would have her trained properly,’ he said. You know who that was? Only the man himself, Gaius van bloody Baelsar! Apparently just arrived from Ala Mhigo for an inspection of the wall, he’d caught wind of my “initiation” and wanted to size me up himself. Everything after that was a whirl, getting dragged here and there as I was trained, fitted, equipped, indoctrinated. Then, after it all, where did I get sent? Castrum Abania, east of the Peaks. Right opposite of where I wanted to be.
"I was bitter for a while, what with my plan going so far awry, but after a while, I settled into service. It was a fairly quiet station, simple patrols and the occasional inspection of Ala Ghiri nearby. Food was never fancy, but it was filling, and that and a warm bed each night wasn’t a half-bad deal. It wasn’t until, a day after quelling a small resistance demonstration in Ala Ghiri, I’d realized how much had changed. My bunk-mate, a stand-up lass from Othard, went off about the “savages” that had started the trouble and they really oughta just give up at this point. There was no way any of them would ever outmatch the Empire, and it would be better to save their skins and our time by just letting it go. And I found myself agreeing with her. That’s what scared me. My mocking dedication to the Empire had turned genuine at some point. I’d given my allegiance to who could give me bread each night, damn whatever I had to do to earn it. That night, I renewed my commitment to escaping that bloody fortress, and make my way across to Eorzea.
"Not too much happened after that. A few moons after, I volunteered for a transfer back to Baelsar’s Wall. I’d served well enough in Castrum Abania to be selected for scouting patrols into the Shroud, and on one of them we encounter a squad of Wood Wailers. In the confusion, I managed to slip away, and the rest is history. That more or less the story of how "Lailathwen oen Nerayna" made her way to Eorzea."
— — — — — — — — —
"Gosh, I haven't the faintest where I’ll be at 40. That'd be another decade and half, and considering all that's happened in the last decade, I'm not sure I could make any reliable guesses. I would hope I'd be able to retire by then, adventurin' and world savin' take a lot out of you, it'd be nice if the cataclysmic disasters threatening to destroy the world were a little less frequent. I'd spend a lot of time with my husband, of course. Fishing trips, sightseeing, you know... I guess that's the sort of thing we'd get up to. Honestly, I have a rough time making plans a year or two down the road, just by the nature of our work. You really can't ever be sure what's going to happen next. So just visualizing 40? Out of my range."
— — — — — — — — —
"Goodness, you serious? Do I even know anyone in their 60s? Let me think... Is he? No, no... Hmph, closest I can think of Gaius Baelsar, who I believe is pushing 50-something. Hey, don't look at me like that! When I agreed to this interview, I certainly didn't think he'd come up as much as he has. Twice today is two times too many, if you ask me.
"Anyroad, by that point, definitely retired. Ah, should have mentioned this for the last question, but would probably want a few little gremlins running about the house at some point. At 60, they'd be out on their own, I suppose. Hmmm, the Warrior of Light, a tottering ol' granny, baking cookies and caring for kittens. Do you see it? I don't know if I do, haha. I suppose we'll just have to wait and see!"

well done - you did things right. this may seem like a boring answer, but i promise it isn't. you believe in goodness and you believe in doing good, and through everything, you work to keep that goodness. you have seen so much blood, and your instinct is always to stitch. you grew and fought and won, and i'm glad you did, because someone had to. i'm glad you kept believing in the world you were trying to save. you are far braver than most could ever be.

Laila began her journey with Conjury, but post-2.55, she took up MCH to take a more active role in combat. After the Ghimlyt Dark, she learned to be a Gunbreaker, to better protect those dear to her.

Unwanted Reminiscence
FFXIV Write 2020 Entry for 9/5 - “ Matter of Fact” 426 Words,
“That’s not true! I would never!” Alphinaud’s voice rang out, his exasperated cries from the balcony where he was having lunch down to the bustling market stalls of Revenant’s Toll below. He looked back and forth between his sister, Krile, and Lailathwen, the four of them seated together. Laila was stifling a laugh as Krile finished her story, another best-forgotten tale of Alisaie’s and his days in the Studium. Their prodding was the cause of his currently-flushed cheeks, as he furiously tried to deny the claims against him.
“I dunno Alphinaud, it certainly sounds like you. A tenacious upstart, causing trouble for those in authority? Matches you to a T.” Laila smirked, taking a sip of the tea Tataru had left them. The last thing he needed was for her to join in the tomfoolery. Especially these, well, the stories weren’t *false* per se, but at least *embellished*.
“Oh, come now, you’re going to put him out.” Alisaie mock-pleaded, biting her lip and her shot him a taunting gaze. “But as a matter of fact, I can indeed confirm the veracity of Krile’s recollections. Why, it seems as if merely yesterday that we entered to hallowed halls, barely reaching chest-high to our peers.” She held the back of her hand against her forehead, her voice dripping with false pretension as she over-elaborately described their entry to the Studium. “Thank goodness his ego stood twice his own height.”
Krile and Laila laughed along with his sister’s ribbing, much to his dismay. Still, if he picked his words carefully... “I daresay your teasing hasn’t changed since we enrolled in the Studium. I hadn’t thought you so stuck in the past, Alisaie.” With practice honed through negotiating on a knife’s edge, his tone, calm and just a *touch* condescending, hid his inner embarrassment. As much as it bothered him, he knew the best way to get them off his back to act like he cared not a whit, and redirect the conversation elsewhere.
Alisaie’s eyes went wide, unprepared for his retort. She grew quiet for a moment, and just as he thought he’d perhaps earned a rest, she reached across the table and playfully bapped him on the forehead, Krile and Laila chuckling as she did. “Mind your manners, brother, err you forget that discussions can escalate beyond words.” Ever wont for fisticuffs, she was. Alphinaud sighed, roughly planting his elbows on the table as his ordeal continued. A wistful smile crept across his face. For all his bother, he wouldn’t trade his sister for anything in the world.

OC Sheet: Lailathwen
Tumblr media
Name: Lailathwen Leblanc (née Nerayna), or just "Laila" Race: Miqo'te ( Keeper of the Sun) Age: 22 (ARR), 25 (ShB) Job(s): WHM (ARR), MCH (HW-SB), GNB (ShB)
Tumblr media
Backstory: Lailathwen hails from the L tribe, born to L’adineh Ndai and the tribe’s Nunh. Chafing against the strict tribal order, she struck out for new prospects in the outside world at 17, shortly before the events of the 7th Umbral Calamity. Assisting in rebuilding a realm that was still new to her, she worked odd jobs in wherever she might find them, until eventually discovering she possessed a knack for the manipulation of aether. At the urging of others, she made her way to the city state of Gridania, for training in Conjury and intending to become an adventurer of renown.
Tumblr media
Personality: Fiercely loyal, doggedly determined, and fucking tired.
When she first set out for adventure, Laila was self-aggrandizing whelp, scarcely appreciating the magnitude of the matters she had found herself immersed in. Praise and accolades from others were showered upon her for her deeds slaying primals and her contribution to Operation Archon, which she was all too happy to accept. Such arrogance nearly cost her her life, and sent an unfortunate few to their untimely ends besides, something she’ll forever regret.
Today, however, Laila is a different woman. Both exalted and humbled by what she has endured, her trials have taken an inexorable toll on her, and she carries a world-weariness that few can truly understand. Fewer still know, as she deigned to share the weight resting on her to only the Scions and a few other close compatriots, preferring instead to present a confident, heroic disposition whenever possible. However, she ever pushes onward, doing what she knows only she can. With all eyes on her, it wouldn't do to be a brooding mess. She does love her friends and the realm at large dearly. For better or for worse, it doesn't take much to spur her into action, to come to another's aid. On her bad days, cynicism can rear its head in her thoughts, but she rarely turns away from those who need her.
Tumblr media
Relationships: Laila is lovingly married to Luka Leblanc (@lavenderleblanc), coWoL (Assuming a continuity where he is present. Depends on what I’m writing!). Their ceremony occurred after the events of ShB concluded, and she took his name.
Her closest friends amongst the Scions are, without a doubt, Alphinaud and Alisaie Leveilleur. She'd had her reservations with Alphinaud during their first forays in Coerthas, but soon found him dependable, if a tad self-absorbed. The events preceding Heavwensward wounded them both, and forged a deep bond between them. Laila admires his determination and principled stance, ever focused on the wellbeing of common folk and the realm at large, and the harsh lessons and growth he overcame, mirroring her own post-calamity. Alisaie and Laila share a streak of brashness and a swaggering confidence, though Laila has a tad more mind to look before leaping
Though she never met him while he lived, she holds Louisoix Leveilleur in high regard. What she's learned of him from the Scions, and his Grandchildren especially, strikes near to her heart

Far From Home
FFXIV Write 2020 Entry for 9/29 - “Paternal" 510 words, 2.5-HW MSQ
The fire crackled as another log was placed upon it, the light emanating from it flickering and dancing. Alphinaud sat, taking in the warmth to fight the swirling chill of the Churning Mists. Ysayle had left, volunteering to gather firewood, and Estinien had followed swiftly after, to “Keep a watchful eye upon her,” in his words. This left him and Lailathwen together, quietly listening to the snap of the fire and the sounds of nature around them.
Alphinaud shifted, muttering to himself as he pulled up a rock that’s been digging into his back. “Not quite the level of accommodation as House Fortemp, eh?” He laughed weakly. He wished he wasn’t still so distraught over the betrayal of his Crystal Braves, though she was likely in no better shape herself. They’d both taken it badly, and were fortunate to have each other to rely on.
“No, that it is not. Certainly isn’t where I saw myself back when I first left home, I’ll tell you that.”
Alphinaud’s ears perked at her words, and he cleared his throat to maintain his composure. It wasn’t often the Warrior of Light spoke of her past. He wasn’t one to pry without cause, but he couldn’t deny his curiosity into her history. “Where is home, if you don’t mind me asking?”
She was quiet for a good while, her expression unreadable. Alphinaud was worried he’d offended her before she spoke, wistful but still light. “L Tribe, though I dunno if that’s surprising. ‘Lailathwen’ isn’t actually my given name, but it’s near enough. So, I didn’t exactly, ah, fit in growing up. Picked fights with other kids, snapped at elder, unruly child all over. My parents, they meant well, but they wanted me to be respectable, to fit into their neat little system, but it didn’t really have room for someone like me. Things got worse and worse between us until I couldn’t take any more, and struck out on my own. This would have been... what, two, three months before the calamity?” If the recounting of her past troubled her at all, she didn’t show it.
Alphinaud, on the other hand, listened with rapt attention, and his eyes went wide as she finished. “By the Twelve! That would have you have no more than 17 summers, then? Your family must have been worried about you in the wake of what happened.” He thought back to his own family’s actions around the fall of Dalamud, Grandfather’s duty, the evacuation of New Sharlayan. To be on one’s own during such a harrowing time...
Laila only scoffed, however, at his worried questions. “I’m sure they were, but I haven’t been back since. This wasn’t simply ‘moody child causing trouble’ or anything. They wouldn’t see me for who I was, who I am now, so I had to find people who could. Who knows if they’re any more accepting now, but I know I’m better of out here than I was there.” She smiled, planting an arm across his back and giving him a half embrace. “Company’s better, too.”

Laila looks so cute!
Anyways, what does she like to do in her downtime? Does she have a crush on anyone?
Ah, ty!!!! 😊😊
In downtime, there’s a fair number of things she can be found doing. She’s an avid reader, and enjoys working with her hands on physical crafts (She a canon omni-crafter, haha). Other times, when she just needs to unwind and decompress, she likes to seek high vantage points and just think.
For crushes, she’s certainly had flings with a good number of allies, particularly the Scions, haha. Through ARR, she was too focused on making a name as an adventurer, and after the banquet in Ul’Dah, she couldn’t allow herself the vulnerability of having a crush per se and actively dismissed those feelings for fear of what might happen if she indulged. It’s not until post-SB that she finally let herself open up, and realized that she’d always had feelings for Luka Leblanc. They grew closer through Shadowbringers, and were officially married after everyone returned to the Source.
Even so, she still has assorted feelings for quite a few characters, and their relationship is open to allow her to act on them frequently enough. There’s just too many cute people to smooch!
