hii eve this feels weird
ok so this might be controversial (i'm saying might because i honestly don't know how u guys felt about the comeptition because the tag is still acting up) but i think the competition was pretty okay?? the weather was nice and even tho the wind was a bit shitty from time to time, the jury did a good job?
i was about to say something about eisei's style marks but quite honestly we have talked so much about it in season 2019 i think?? that i don't know what else to say besides FIS FIX THE SYSTEM!!!
now to karle, it was startling to see him so upset and i am not used to it at all?? i watched an interview and he was obviously so lost in his thoughts and he even interrupted the interviewer because she started talking about innsbruck - the poor guy had so much pressure form the media and i HATE THEM FOR ALWAYS EXPECTING SO MUCH FROM ATHLETES (if i am not mistaken there is a number of rants about this on my blog already i am not starying again)
BUT i do have to say that i respect him so much because another interviewer tried to push the idea of the jury being guilty and he imediatelly said that he was absolutely not implying that (another reason why i fucking hate some journalists i'm so sorry for the outburst)
ALSO LOVRO KOS MY BELOVED finally got his first podium and i can only hope that he will stay calm and collected for the whole season
honorable mention stephan with amazzing second jump and 10 place
excited for bergisel!!!! (my fave hill pls don't dissapoint)
i feel so powerful!!! how the tables have turned!!!
honestly, looking back i think the competition was fine - i'm a bit salty about karl losing the yellow bib, but frankly after today it might do him so good to have a break from the pressure of leading, and as @bronzebluemind has mentioned recently, he seems to do better attacking than defending sometimes. and oh man i am cut up reading that about his interviews - i don't really get interviews because the english broadcasting team is composed of david goldstrom and no one else, so the last i saw of him was him being very grumpy after his jump and then celebrating with markus (i have a gifset of it somewhere on my blog but presumably not in the tag lmao). i'm glad he's not blaming the jury for anything, it would not be a good look, and as you said i think the jury did fine today.
now that you mention it, the style marks controversy is pretty much the same as in 2019 lol. i think markus was definitely marked unfairly high for his first jump when compared to ryoyu, but also i don't think the overall impact was too severe; the stupid 18.5 from the german judge was eliminated, at least. i'm kind of glad he didn't win the competition frankly, just because there would have been a lot of people (on here, reddit, etc) who were very angry about it.
poor lovro kind of got lost amidst the drama of markus and ryoyu's battle! they never even showed his reaction to knowing he had a podium secured (after marius was 2nd after his jump). but this was awesome for him, and like you i hope that he'll keep it together and produce some more good results.
i can only say that i am terrified about what bergisel might do to karl (if he or anyone else gets hurt before the olympics......)

Hopes & bets - SKI JUMPING 2018/19
Snagged from @landofeternalwinter.
Rules: Answer each question with your picks for the upcoming season and tag others to do the same!
I totally used this as an excuse to search for gifs. Shhhh.
10. What I wait for the most: Right now, showing serious symptoms of ski jumping withdrawal, I just want the season to start. But seriously though, I can’t wait for the competitions I’ll go to: First, my 4HT adventure--10 DAYS, 4 HILLS, 2 COUNTRIES, 1 ROADTRIP AND LOTS OF KILOMETERS. It just has to be good. Then ski flying in Oberstdorf and last but not least the Nordic World Ski Championships. 😌
Tumblr media
9. What I wait for the least: Competitions getting cancelled, wind problems and hence time being an issue because there’s no flood-lighting (Innsbruck, I’m looking at you), gate poker paired with unfortunate decisions and changing wind conditions which takes away a victory at the last minute--and of course I hope nobody gets injured! And then I’m already afraid the season is going to be over just as fast as the last one ...
Tumblr media
8. My bet for the 4HT: If Kamil has another season like last season, I wouldn’t put it past him to do a hat trick. He is just that good, focussed and ambitious to pull it off. But after all the drama related to 4HT, I hope for Daniel to win. ❤️
Tumblr media
7. My bet for Raw Air: Robert because I really hope this past season, his three Olympic medals (!) and his win in Vikersund were just the start for him and we’ll see him on top more often.
Tumblr media
6. The comeback: When it comes to athletes not competing last season, I’m looking forward to seeing Kenneth and Severin again, of course! I can’t decide who I’m more excited about. As for comebacks of athletes who just didn’t get it completely right last season, I so hope for Peter and Gregor to be able to show us again what they are capable of.
Tumblr media
5. The glow-up: Markus, please?
Tumblr media
4. The surprise: Team Austria and Team Slovenia making Team Norway, Team Poland and Team Germany fight for the podium again now that they’ve got new coaches. That’s not a surprise, is it?
Tumblr media
3. The king of ski flying: Still Daniel, obviously. 😏
Tumblr media
2. The top team: Team Norway. 🇳🇴
Tumblr media
1. The king of the season: There are quite a few who could totally pull it off if only their results were more constant and some whose performance I can’t  really estimate. Among all those, I hope for Daniel to make it.

Tumblr media

15 Gorgeous Small Towns In America’s Mountain Regions
From the Adirondacks to the Rockies, these charming mountain towns deserve a moment in the sun. If you’re planning a visit, consider a vacation rental from FlipKey—like a cozy cabin right on the hiking trails or a modern ski condo.
In a land with hundreds of individual mountain ranges and endless acres of national forests, some of the most exciting vacation destinations in the US boast skylines that haven’t changed in centuries. Home to craggy peaks with steep trails, twisting singletracks and swirling whitewater, this country’s beautiful little mountain towns deserve their own moment in the sun. That’s why we’re featuring 24 scenic communities—each home to less than 10,000 residents—with serious four-season appeal and tons of small-town charm.
Whether you’re planning an adventure vacation or a relaxing mountain getaway, these coast-to-coast destinations show off the most breathtaking vistas America has to offer (not to mention some of the coolest backcountry cabins and rustic ski lodges available for rent on FlipKey).
Bryson City, North Carolina
What Bryson City lacks in size, it makes up for in towering peaks, panoramic views and big natural attractions (namely, the Great Smoky Mountains). For hiking and biking enthusiasts, the Appalachian Trail and Tsali Mountain Biking Recreation Area are both nearby, but the city itself is better known for another outdoor activity: epic whitewater rafting. Don’t miss the opportunity to face some huge drops and rapids on the Nantahala River. Of course, if you prefer to stay on dry land, you can always browse the handcrafted items on display in the area’s artisan-run shops.
Find a great place to stay in Bryson City!
Ely, Minnesota
Ely is a small town that’s easy to overlook: northern Minnesota, population 3,460, set against the stunning backdrop of the Shagawa Lake. So how did it end up on this list of stunning mountain vacations? We’ve got a few good reasons, starting with the town’s recent renaissance and an upswing in tourism. From ice fishing and dogsledding in the winter to late summer canoeing and early autumn hiking, this hidden-gem outdoors hub has a lot to offer, and travelers are taking note.
Find a great place to stay in Ely!
Eureka Springs, Arkansas
For cliffside Victorian homes, quaint galleries and boutiques, meandering mountain roads and 25 miles of backwoods trails, rent a historic home in Eureka Springs and start exploring the Ozarks. This popular mountain vacation destination is surrounded by natural attractions including three lakes, two rivers and a number of public caves, so canoeing, kayaking, fishing and hiking abound. But the fun doesn’t stop after summer ends; nearby spas and outstanding exhibits at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art make Eureka Springs an enchanting winter escape.
Find a great place to stay in Eureka Springs!
Park City, Utah
In 2015, two local spots merged to create Park City Mountain Resort, now the largest ski resort in the country. Add 7,300 skiable acres to the 400+ miles of trails accessible to hikers and bikers during the summer, and you’ll understand why this city is a buzzworthy destination year-round. (Of course, if you’re looking to save a little money, steer clear mid-winter when the Sundance Film Festival comes to town.) If hitting the slopes—or trails—isn’t your definition of a good time, the restaurants, galleries and luxe boutiques on Main Street won’t disappoint.
Find a great place to stay in Park City!
Fayetteville, West Virginia
Given West Virginia’s nickname (“The Mountain State”) and motto (“Mountaineers are Always Free”), the state’s rugged peaks are an essential part of its heritage—just as much as the small towns nestled in the Allegheny and Blue Ridge Mountain ranges. Fayetteville is one of those charming destinations, home to the oldest river on the continent and the world’s second-longest single arch bridge. Aside from the region’s legendary whitewater rafting, Fayetteville is also known for rock climbing, llama treks(!) and Bridge Day, an annual October festival and sporting event centered around BASE jumping.
Find a great place to stay in Fayeteville!
Gatlinburg, Tennessee
Gatlinburg is practically synonymous with Great Smoky Mountains National Park and those iconic misty mountain ridges. It’s a regional hub for whitewater rafting, horseback riding, ziplining and a long list of other popular outdoor activities; visit in the winter, and you can even fly down the slopes at Ober Gatlinburg, Tennessee’s only ski resort. Beyond the scenery, though, this entertaining mountain vacation town is known for its boutiques, live bluegrass and a surprising number of distilleries. Ever wondered what apple pie moonshine tastes like? You can sample it here. Make a day trip of it and book yourself a moonshine and wine tasting tour.
Find a great place to stay in Gatlinburg!
Homer, Alaska
Homer has its fair share of nicknames: “Halibut Fishing Capital of the World.” “Cosmic Hamlet by the Sea.” “The End of the Road.” But make no mistake about that last one: this destination is not a dead end. Hemmed in by the mountains and the sea, Homer boasts the best of both worlds, so you can go hiking on Kenai Peninsula trails in the morning and sea kayaking on the Kachemak Bay in the afternoon. Well on its way to becoming the state’s adventure tourism capital, the quaint and quirky mountain town lures Alaskans and out-of-state travelers alike with its mild climate, jaw-dropping scenery, excellent fishing and prime bear viewing opportunities. You can even book a six-hour grizzly bear-spotting tour, including a thrilling plane ride and a hike to get a closer look at these fascinating creatures.
Find a great place to stay in Homer!
Hood River, Oregon
Hood River has been called both “a recreational boomtown” and “an agricultural powerhouse,” because the Columbia River port city is equally famous for its strong winds (a windsurfer’s dream) and good fruit. Located an hour east of Portland, where the Columbia River Gorge meets the Cascade Mountain Range, the area boasts some of the best windsurfing in the world and 15,000 acres of orchards—plus microbreweries, top-notch cycling, scenic gorges and balmy temperatures nearly year-round. Pair a leisurely cycle with some first-rate wine tasting on the Oregon Wine Country Experience, a guided cycle stopping at three wineries and offering some of the area’s best views.
Find a great place to stay in Hood River!
Ketchum, Idaho
Whether you’re a daredevil biker, skier or mountaineer, it’s about time you (ahem) caught up with Ketchum—the self-described home of “one of the lowest resting heart rates anywhere.” Once a Wild West mining center, this central Idaho town is just one mile from Sun Valley, the first American ski resort. Naturally, skiing is an essential part of the fabric of the community (and with 250 days of sunshine each year, it’s not a bad place to visit if you’re craving a little fresh air). Reserve a cabin rental or luxury lodge and prepare for an epic outdoor adventure.
Find a great place to stay in Ketchum!
Killington, Vermont
Best known for its namesake resort, Killington boasts 6 peaks, 22 lifts, 155 trails and 3,000 skiable acres, making it the largest ski area in the eastern US. Eleven miles away, the Nordic Ski and Snowshoe Center offers more than 35 miles of cross-country skiing and snowshoe trails. And while we’re crunching the numbers, here are five reasons—music festivals, mountain climbing, biking, hiking and golf—to visit after the snow melts. Oh, and one more thing: Killington has played host to three Spartan World Championship events. (We think that about sums it up.)
Find a great place to stay in Killington!
Lake Almanor Area, California
In northeastern California, where the Cascades and Sierra Nevadas meet, Lake Almanor offers swimming, tubing, kayaking, canoeing and 52 miles of forested shoreline. If lazy summer lake days aren’t your style, the region’s great trails and beautiful meadows are also perfect for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing when colder weather sets in. No matter when you visit, thanks to the number of smallmouth bass, giant rainbow trout and kokanee salmon, the fishing is great year-round.
Find a great place to near Lake Almanor!
Leavenworth, Washington
For a feel-good comeback story, look no further than the tale of Leavenworth. After the decline of the area’s railway and timber industries in the 1960s, the former logging town remodeled its buildings to create a Bavarian-style alpine village. In the decades since, Leavenworth has become a bustling tourist destination known for its Cascade Mountain scenery and a packed calendar of festivals and performances. If you visit during the summer, don’t leave without catching an outdoor show at the Leavenworth Summer Theater; during the winter, backcountry skiing and snowmobiling are two exciting ways to explore the surrounding region.

Red Lodge, Montana
If you don’t know about Red Lodge’s skiing and snowboarding scene, here’s what you’ve been missing: affordable prices, heart-stopping vistas and plenty of fresh powder (around 250 inches of snow each year). Avoid the crowds at big-name resorts and opt in for a cabin rental with stunning views of the Beartooth Mountains. When warmer weather arrives, this desirable mountain towns town becomes a hot spot for climbing, fishing, rafting and horseback riding. What’s more? In Red Lodge’s historic downtown, you’ll find plenty of unique local spots to shop, eat and enjoy a pint.

Taos, New Mexico
Perhaps best known for Taos Pueblo, the only living Native American community to be declared both a National Historic Landmark (1965) and a UNESCO World Heritage Site (1992), Taos is a desert town at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Range. Here, galleries, museums and landmark sites are not difficult to come by—but neither are legendary hikes and unforgettable mountain vistas. For a great introduction to Taos, book a guided driving tour, which includes Taos Pueblo and the Rio Grande Gorge. Craving cold-weather activities? Seventeen miles northeast of the town, Taos Ski Valley offers skiing and snowboarding during the winter.

Telluride, Colorado
Welcome to Rocky Mountain High Country. If the skyline is giving you a case of déjà vu, it might be because you’ve seen it before—on a can of Coors beer. Telluride is an iconic spot, home to cabin rentals with soaring mountain views and the dazzling slopes skiers dream of all year. We’re partial to the excellent hikes (don’t miss the trek to 365-foot Bridal Veil Falls), thriving restaurant scene (try the buffalo, venison or elk) and buzzy annual events like the Telluride Bluegrass Festival.

Hello! Im still new to ski jumping, so I wanted to ask if there are any upcoming events?
Hi Anon! I hope you’ve enjoyed whatever ski jumping you’ve already watched - we’re coming towards the end of the season now, but there’s still plenty of cool things to look forward to (... depending on the coronavirus situation)
This weekend coming (12th-14th of Feb) was meant to have competitions for the men and women in Beijing in preparation for next year’s Olympics - however, that’s not been possible, and so the men have competitions in Zakopane, Poland, and the women have... nothing, as their rescheduled competition in Lillehammer was cancelled.
The weekend after that (18th-20th of Feb) the men and women (I believe?) both have competitions on the normal hill in Rasnov, Romania.
After that, we get the Nordic Ski World Championships from the 22nd of February to the 7th of March. These are held once every two years, and feature ski jumping, nordic combined, and cross-country skiing. The ski jumping competitions there are as follows:
24th Feb - women’s normal hill qualification
25th Feb - women’s individual normal hill competition
26th Feb - women’s team competition + men’s normal hill qualification
27th Feb - men’s normal hill individual competition
28th Feb - mixed team competition
2nd Mar - women’s large hill qualification
3rd Mar - women’s large hill competition
4th Mar - men’s large hill qualification
5th Mar - men’s large hill competition
6th Mar - men’s team competition
If that sounds like something you might want some time to emotionally recover from, too bad, because the Raw Air tournament runs from the 12th of March to the 21st of March (hopefully! There’s been talk that it might be cancelled, but the FIS website still lists it as happening). The specific competitions in Raw Air are:
12th-14th Mar - Oslo (men + women)
15th-16th Mar - Lillehammer (men + women)
17th-18th Mar - Trondheim (men + women)
19th-21st Mar - Vikersund (men only)
The women don’t compete on the flying hill in Vikersund (because the FIS are cowards), and instead travel to Russia to do the Blue Bird Tournament from the 19th of March to the 28th of March. The specifics:
19th-21st Mar - Nizhny Tagil
26th-28th Mar - Chaikovsky
The men close their season with ski flying at Planica from the 25th to the 28th of March.

Another way to enjoy winter in the mountains
For those of us who grew up in a wintry climate, there are two ways to look at this season. Option 1 is to hate it and wish you lived somewhere else. Option 2 is to embrace it which is how a lot of mountain town folks got there in the first place. Some of us yearn for those deep powder days of carving pillowy snow, exploding as we command our lines down the mountain.  For others, we just love winter and ALL its activities from snowshoeing to skinning and Nordic skiing to pond hockey. Talking about pond hockey, you could equate that pond hockey is to ice skating as backcountry is to skiing/snowboarding. Ultimately, its pretty fun and encapsulates the essence of winter.
Pond Hockey – How the sport should be played
Credit: Chris Ralph(@ChrisRalphYQ)
Watching the annual NHL Winter Classic played on an outdoor rink, my mind drifts to the pureness of playing hockey on a pond.  Sure, ice skating on a manufactured rink is fun, but there’s something genuine about playing on a natural pond.  This is where the annual Pond Hockey Classic was born.  Each year, thousands of faithfuls from 25+ U.S. states and 5 Canadian provinces, take to the ice to battle the elements and play the sport the way it was meant to be played – on a natural frozen body of water.  There are quite a few different pond hockey tournaments all over North America and here are some of the more intriguing ones:
Montana Pond Hockey Classic – Whitefish Ski Resort
January 20-22 2017
It’s only in the last 40 years hockey has moved indoors.  It’s exciting to know that elements of hockey are getting back to their roots with competitions such as the Pond Hockey Classic.  The first stop on this tour is played on Foys Lake in Kalispell, Montana.  In the summer, the lake is filled with fantastic fishing, but in the winter, it transforms into a perfect plane of ice.  Running three years strong, the winner of this event will raise the Monty Cup a champion.  Once you’re done watching though, head down the trail to Whitefish Ski resort and enjoy some of the best skiing in the country.
US Pond Hockey Championship – Trollhaugen
January 26-29, 2017
Image taken by: Sam Catanzaro
Starting in 2006, the first ever pond hockey championship was born. Drawing nearly 120 teams to Minneapolis from across the nation, they played on 25 rinks while tens of thousands of spectators cheered them on!  In its 11th year, ESPN considers this event as one of the ‘101 things every sports fan should attend before they die.’ Technically not a ski town, the Twin Cities have given us many famous skiers and snowboarders. Legends like Dan Brisse, Joe Sexton, and the 1817 crew all came from here.  It’s understandable when resorts like Trollhaugen allow these rail wizards to perfect their craft and then take it to the streets, stars would be born.
New England Pond Hockey Classic – Gunstock Mountain Resort
February 3-5, 2017
Photo Credit: Mike Mooney – WickedNewEnglandPhotography.com
Dating back to 1883, Concord, New Hampshire is widely believed to be the home of the first ever organized ice hockey game in the U.S. The passion for this sport can be seen in the intense rivalry between the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadians.  Depending on who you ask, this competition is as big as the Yankees-Red Sox clash.  It’s justifiable that only an hour north of Concord on the largest lake in New Hampshire is also the most sought after Pond Hockey Classic tournament in North America.  It’s so popular that teams fly in from all over Canada & the U.S. to compete in this event.
Vermont Pond Hockey Classic – Bolton Valley Ski Resort
February 10-12, 2017
The Pond Hockey Classic ends in Colchester, Vermont. Not to be out done by the New Hampshire stop, it offers a venue played right on Lake Champlain.  Once you’re done on the “pond”, you can head over to the historic Church Street area in downtown Burlington and have a pint or grab a bite to eat.  You will experience food made with local ingredients and enjoy the mythical, almost legendary, Heady Topper.  This beer is a ripe, pungent and earthy imperial India pale ale, considered one of the rarest and most coveted beers in the world.  And for those spectators or truly hearty competitors that need a bit more action, you can even go night skiing at Bolton Valley ski resort.
Lake Louise Pond Hockey Classic – Lake Louise Ski Resort
February 22-26, 2017
Depending on where you are in the world, there are sports considered less as an activity and more of a religion.  New Zealand has rugby, Indiana has basketball, and in Canada, it’s ice hockey.  The cathedral of this sport could be considered Lake Louise with its biting cold air surrounded by the majestic snow covered peaks. The deafening silence across the landscape is only broken from the sound of a “clack” from a puck hitting a stick or the serration of the ice skate blades cutting into the frozen surface.  The culmination of the entire winter is the Lake Louise Pond Hockey Classic.  With 24 teams playing across two 2-day tournaments, this is a sight to truly enjoy.
This is only an introduction to the pond hockey tournaments happening across North America.  We love skiing & snowboarding but there’s something just as magical about lacing up a pair of skates, grabbing a twig, and hitting a puck around on a frozen body of water. Don’t knock it till you try it. You might be a new pond hockey fan!
