These estrildid finches are not found in the wild and were likely domesticated from the White-backed Munia in Asia. They are very social birds and will often roost and nest in groups. Males and females look the same and can be distinguished by the male’s courtship display and song. Because of their strong parenting instincts, they are popular as “foster parents,” used to raise chicks of other species of finch.
