Backstory of my new sillies Yarrow and Rosemary!

Yarrow and Rosemary are young alchemists that grew up in the Elmwoode accademy, which is located in the eastern portion of the Kingdom. The academy offers an education to gifted children who would not be able to afford it otherwise. Kids are scouted for the academy when they are very young, and once they are admitted their lives change drastically. They move in a dorm, are allowed to see their families very rarely and are required to choose a new name for themselves as a sign of loyality and commitment to the institution. The students' names have to be plants used in alchemy, and picking plants used to produce poisons and toxins is strictly forbidden.

The academy becomes like a new family for a lot of the kids, with many of them choosing to remain there to work as botanists or professors once they complete their scholarship. The academy attributes a lot of value to hard work and academic achievement, holding its pupils to very high standards. Students are encouraged to take pride in carrying their new names and wearing the academy's emblem, and they are expected to not dishonour the institution.

Cold and reserved, Yarrow always had a hard time socialising with his peers. After spending most of his childhood years in an orphanage, he had made a good impression on Elmwoode recruiters and was selected to join the academy. Fueled by his great passion for the subject, Yarrow was always considered a top-of-the class student and an overall promising pupil, despite his inability to socialise with his classmates. However, his relationship with his professors and tutors soon became complicated when he started developing an interest in poisons, despite it being a forbidden subject in the academy. Him and Rosemary actually bonded when they found themselves in detention together, after Yarrow attempted to steal a book on toxins from the forbidden part of the library.

Unable to gain meaningful friendships with the rest of the students, feeling misunderstood by his professors, and without a family waiting for him on the outside, Yarrow truly has only Rosemary to rely on.

He is very ambitious and resents the authority figures of the academy. He feels like no one takes him seriously and has a deep desire to show the world what he's capable of.

Also a gifted child, Rosemary is the 5th daughter of a modest family of farmers. She was always considered bright for her age and had a lively, fiery personality. Her father, seeing in her a future in academics, decided to bring her to Elmwoode recruiters. Rosemary was selected and reluctantly left her family to join the academy.

Despite her natural talent and bright mind, she found herself struggling in the academy, having a hard time paying attention in class and staying on top of assignments. This, paired with her energetic personality made her gain the reputation of a "promising student that doesn't apply to the studies enough" amongst her professors. And her family, who views her being accepted into the academy as a blessing, expects only the best results from her. Rosemary tries very hard to live up to the expectations put on her, but, regardless of her efforts, she can't bring herself to focus consistently on her studies like the rest of her classmates.

She ends up befriending Yarrow after she's put in detention with him for having forgotten once again to hand in one of her assignments. Unlike Yarrow, Rosemary always was very extroverted and never struggled with socialising. However she feels like Yarrow is the first person to truly understand her, since he can relate to how she feels misunderstood.

So, despite their differences, Yarrow and Rosemary end up becoming really close friends. Eventually, they decide to run away in an attempt to start a new life, away from the constraining environment of the academy.

They make their way to the city of Nortegham with the intention of setting up a buisness selling potions. But things go south when Yarrow decides to sell poisons on the black market, and the duo ends up getting involved in the dealings of the criminal underworld.

Oh boy!! Definitely a while

This is the first drawing of them I could find, from June 2021. They changed quite a bit!!

Raze still exist, but his name now is Marte and he doesn't have to do with the alchemists' plot as much anymore.

So they have been a thing for a couple of years already!! It's quite common for me to have ocs simmering in my head for months or even years before I go from the base idea/concept to the actual design and role in the story

The Krivan reunion would be too obvious sooo.. ( ◕‿◕ )

One of his happiest memories is when he visited King Ikav's grave with the rest of the group.

King Ikav is a legendary figure amongst ikav sorcerers (which are named after him!!), and it's a tradition for members of the Crows and the Nightingales (two guilds founded by him) to place feathers of their correspictive brids on his grave.

Being part of the Crows and travelling in the area, it was natural for the group to make a detour to visit his burial. However Kree, the only one in the group who isn't an ikav sorcerer, felt uncomfortable at the idea of coming along woth the others. Arkyan sorcerers like him do not have a strong sense of community like ikavs, and are seen as inherently evil and untrustworthy by most. He insisted on waiting for them outside and stayed there alone all broody. Until!! Allen came back out to drag his sorry ass in, and insisted he placed something of his own along their feathers. Kree ends up leaving a moon-shaped rock he picked up while travelling on the grave <3

And it was really big for him because it made him feel like he truly belongs with them!!
