accidentally prompted myself to reconsider the lotmv story, so thats fun
the premise, such that it was, was that Seora was a demigod of light, and had funky light magic. And there was a weird magical darkness that had corrupted the land, and she was one of a whole class of people who keep it at bay. But that 'bay' is pretty politicised, and at some point the whole forced to live with the magical darkness kidnap Seora to make her fix things for them. And then a whole lot of shit happens.
And that's... fine? i guess. but i think it could be better, and part of that is just. telling the big grand politics angle to leave. there was a lot of weird geopolitics happening and we dont need that.
the changes arent unprecedented, since i tried to fix the story earlier too lmao.
what i think id prefer is something a bit more. social?
In a reconsidered lotmv, Seora is still a light demigod, and still has these very specific duties that she's been practically raised for since birth. There's strict duties and hierarchies and so on, things she can and cant do. She has a 'boyfriend', a bodyguard called Roderick, who has absolutely has no interest in but cannot very well reject, because to do so would be stepping out of the social agreement. it would cause problems for them both, but mostly for her. So she's stuck in her job, and in a "relationship".
At some point, she is contacted by Esther, who is a member of a group trying to fix the magic goop problem - a group whose reasonable requests for aid keep being denied. The two start a very careful correspondence, each bound by the norms around them.
An idea comes into focus. Seora would like nothing more than to help them, but the binds of her position stay her hand. She cant do anything. And if she acts out and voices her support, she'll be stripped of whatever "authority" she had while remaining bound.
So, to get Seora into the correct locations, a kidnapping will be staged. The group will kidnap Seora, bring her back to their place, and "force" her to help them. Once she's done what she needs to do, the group will suddenly become amenable to any of the negotiations presented by Seora's people, and they'll return her. She'll not be harmed, her reputation will be preserved, everythings fine.
For the optics, to make it seem that she's unwilling, they'll need to play up some things. She understands this going in. That they'll need to skirt the line for the greater good. She has her part to play.
And what she doesnt reckon with, prior to agreeing to everything, is on falling in love with Esther. And Esther doesn't either.
And that's a problem. Because if Seora starts getting too comfortable, enjoys herself too much, then the whole part of the operation intended to preserve her reputation fails. Because, well, now she looks willing. And that defeats the whole point.
So the two of them are stuck in a complicated dance of the various expectations of them, what they need to do, what roles they have to serve, and what they want.
Because, for Esther, Seora's help is essential. She's the one person that was on board. They need her magical skills. Esther was willing to risk being caught kidnapping her, because the end goal is very important to her. And now she's in love. And that risks the whole fucking thing.
Strictly, this could have all been "present" in the original version of lotmv, but its a slight reframing to be about those expectations and complications. There's still the issue of what exactly Esther's group is, how they fit in/oppose Seora's. In the original, they're different countries. i feel like that still wooorks? two countries who are not on speaking terms, a group within that countries military (?) who feel they have no other choice. there's some little worldbuilding... bits that make things weird, but its workable, i think. maybe? idk

for anyone keeping up on the epistolary thing, i decided lotmv doesnt really have the vibe i want, so ive just gone and sketched out the structure for a completely different epistolic romance Thing. drama! great
the gist is there's this centre of magical learning thats quite prestigious, and difficult to get into. generally, you need to be either related to a former alumni, rich as all get out, or come personally recommended by a person held in esteem by the college.
One such person is a guy we'll call Lord L. He has his estates, one in a bustling little port and another in the country, and his niece A working as one of his secretaries at the former. She handles much of his incoming mail and categorises it for his convenience, as well as handling more routine things that do not require his attention.
B is a young woman of nothing, who gets it in her head that shes going to attend this university. being flat broke and related to noone of note, she decides to shoot her shot - she sends a petition for Lord L to write her a letter of recommendation.
A receives this, goes 'are you kidding me', and writes back to tell B that there's no way his lordship would ever confer such an honour upon her, if it were even something he was able to grant.
B shoots back that of course it is within his power to grant, as he has done some on at least two occasions in the past, and his significant contributions to the college's funds place him in the esteem necessary.
A says sure he's done so previously, but those were the relatives of trusted advisors, generals, and so on. Surely B would be better off asking someone nearer to her for this sort of recommendation?
B says there is no-one near her.
A relents, tells B to resend her petition, and tells her the odds are low.
To which Lord L, finding the petition "bold", writes up a letter of recommendation.
B all but blows a raspberry in letter form, and pledges to continue writing to A of her significant accomplishments at the college to prove to her that she made a mistake turning her down in the first place.
And so it goes. B continues to write A. A considers the matter hilarious. B considers it a matter of pride. And as time goes on, they grow closer by letter. B is the far more open and honest of the pair, slowly spilling her heart, admitting to failures, so on. A is rather guarded, opening up on slowly and in parts - her first major confession of note is that, as a young woman of a "prime age", she has been all but hounded by suitors for years, none of which she has especially fancied.
At some point, B gets A a birthday gift, using money she scraped together in between her various classes. A, privately, considers it among the tackiest and ugliest things she's ever beheld, but that the gesture gives it charm.
Later, B's letters start containing more adventures, and more news from outside the college grounds, as she has found a companion who can afford such things (we'll call him C). A's responses to these letters start to get more bitter.
B notices after a while, and calls A out. Clearly, this correspondence no longer brings her joy. What would she have her do? If there is a topic she wishes avoided, say and she'll make it so. Or would she rather communication cease entirely, that she might be free to pursue her whirlwind romances without petty interruption?
This is the point where things shift, because A's emotions are guarded to herself, not just B. She gets angry at the implication that she'd been anything other than honest when she said she enjoyed their correspondence. SHe does not actually explain what her issue is (which is that she is both envious that B is getting to see and experience so much, and jealous that C is the one to enjoy it with her).
B, for her part, takes this response equally poorly, believing that A's noble arrogance must assume her too uneducated and foolish to understand anything beyond surface words. Things so on. Both are projecting heavily.
The letters stop. The section includes journal entries and an unfinished, even more bitter letter from A, which she wisely chooses not to send.
A few months later, B sends another letter, apologising and attempting to end the relationship more positively, taking the time to heap praise on the things she has enjoyed of their ~year or so of communication. Very honest and earnest.
A responds cautiously, apologises for her part, and offers the explanation that she was simply envious of B's great journeys. Still dishonest, but less so. She tentatively requests B continue to write, if she so wish.
The two resume slowly.
By this point, neither has met in person. At some point (around now seems fair) B is summoned by Lord L to discuss her progress. Despite working for him, A misses the chance to see B proper, and B doesn't appear to notice A at all in the Lord's manor. Both note their regret at the missed opportunity, though A had at least seen B physically.
Time passes. B and C are picked as part of a big learning excursion of sorts, where a group accompanied by a professor will roadtrip this bad boy, heading to various other schools of learning. B pledges to continue sending letters from each location, and encourages A to write responses (which would be delivered to B's college, to be read on her return)
B writes her letters.
And then she stops.
And A doesn't notice for a little while. She expects delays now that the two are much further away from each other - where previously a letter would arrive within a week (so a 2 week round trip tops), now the delays are larger, it might take 2 weeks for a letter to get to A. So she waits patiently.
And waits.
And waits.
And she starts to write letters that are not responses, and not quite questions. She claims in the first that she is simply 'keeping her hand in', that she'll go rusty if she stops writing, and so she'll continue to talk as though someone is listening.
And talk.
And talk.
And she gets more honest the longer the gap becomes. She confesses to being scared.
A newspaper clipping talks about rumours of foul magic at a university in the city B was visiting, various students vanishing from the grounds.
Another letter from A, wishing B well.
Time goes on.
She continues to tell B about her problem with suitors, how they are ever persistent and her father's disappointment only grows. That she fears she'll have to make a choice soon, and wishes she had B's confidence to simply choose a course of action and forge forward.
Eventually, A sends a final letter, thanking B for her letters. She cannot continue to wait and hope in vain - it's keeping her from moving forward, and doing what she must. One of her recurring suitors has invited her to his estate, and she intends to attend. She supposes she has grown fond of the man, and perhaps, one day, she will love him as well.
Love him as well as be fond? Or love him as well?
B sends a letter to C's parents - curt, not quite her normal style.
C was a remarkable man. If she is able to bring him back to them, she will.
Time passes. B makes her return proper, having been involved in "some mage shit" (i havent decided exactly what). Her return is likely marked by a letter from the college to Lord L about the matter (possibly should've had one earlier as well, whomst to say). She writes a letter to A.
A does not respond. Instead, it's the other secretary who worked for Lord L. A no longer works for the his lordship, having departed some time ago.
B asks where she might be - could she have her address, or else have a message forwarded to her? No. Supposedly, A did not wish to be reached.
Scattered diary entries from B about trying to track A down, trying various avenues.
Diary entries from A, about her life on the estate.
A diary entry from B, saying she had finally resolved to simply ask Lord L. Lord L, true to his character, bemusedly informs B that A had gotten engaged (x time) prior.
at this point, the vibe is that B wants to at the VERY least deliver a letter to A that responds to all she said in her absence, and to wish A well. Depending how much drama we wanna milk changes a few things
Has A already been married, or is it still an engagement at this stage?
is her husband nice enough but still kind of a twat (after all - no contact?)
Like, B writes a very passionate letter to A's new address, and as something of a parallel to the start of the story, it's not A who responds, but her fiance, all but saying 'do not fucking attempt to contact my wife ever again'. Fascinating. Could even hammer home how little A is aware of the matter through continued diary entries. But you can still get the vibe that she cares - her birthday rolls around, and though she is showered in magnificent gifts from her fiance, she still pulls out the horrifically tacky gift B got her years ago. Hell, maybe one of the gifts from her fiance is explicitly framed as 'you can replace that dreadful old necklace' you fool its SENTIMENTAL.
theres a couple of ways the funk with it, depending how long you wanna fucking spend in Second Hell. B possibly putting A's attention to detail to the test by sending another letter under a false name, with the hopes it slips past the fiance but is sufficiently ???? to properly catch A out and make SOMETHING happen. who knows. how much drama does one bitch need.
obviously it all ends, eventually, with the two being able to properly meet in person, FINALLY. years in the making. and then like, well - do they elope or no. these bitches gay. if the fiances a dick then absolutely lads. and so on
tl;dr bitches start writing letters out of a weird spite/humour thing, accidentally catch feelings, fall out, get back together, get fucking vanished for long enough that one of them gets engaged in the other's absence, yeehaw?

well, i decided my next prompt is gonna be a valuable item. HOWEVER. im gonna work on two in tandem. because said valuable item shouldnt be hard to describe, given theres an event tied to it and some locations and such. so the words wont be hard, and its an event ive already thought about and a museum i havent explicitly mentioned before but which honestly Has to exist. its fine.
so i drew some art for valuable item, though i might draw a second thing relating to its owner. which is kaisa. its shit about kaisa. and while i DO have a thing of kaisa already, i might draw a new one to show her actually wearing the specific thing. her cloak ISNT among the items i drew simply because Why th Fuck would she have been wearing it to a private meeting? crazy. it was at home. its almost definitely also in the museum but kept slightly apart.
anyway i need a second prompt to do. hmmmmm. well, chels chose the Crazy Tech one. oooooof. thats unfortunate, but also probably good, since its gonna be a hard prompt and itll be a fun challenge to figure out some basic tech level. like, ive just been stretching disbelief to allow for cars and trains and shit. maybe theyve made some funky engines using magic? the thing about magic is that its not really a stor- THEY MADE A WAY TO STORE MAGIC. THERE YOU GO! perfect! and then said things can be used in machines. you gotta refuel your car in our world, you gotta refuel your amulet in Asavla. fucking badabing boom, bitch. you pull into the station for a refuel and a handful of demigods are there to juice to your shit. which wouldve TOTALLY fucked shit during the demigod drought when there just. werent any?????
but thats a good idea. magic storage. but in a sort of tech way. i can roll with that. :)

Day 7 - The Economy!
Now sure, I did year 10 economics, but I definitely wouldn’t say i know anything about money :p so this one is very simple - they got that $$
I think a more interesting thing, in terms of design (my forté), is how each cultures money could reflect that culture and its propaganda.
The lil mock up above is an example of a simple idea - a coronation commemorative coin. the ascension of Empress Ilsa takes place in 1360 (which i accidentally wrote as 1460, whoops, the timeline adjust messed me up again!) and would definitely have a single run mint of coins to celebrate, before switching to a more permanent option. think of it like coins in many monarchies, where the monarchs head is on the obverse of the coin. i think thats fairly simple.
but of course, said empress here would have influence on how those designs might look. perhaps if shes expansionist, and wishes to take back divinitian land, she might request one of the coins ($2, $1, etc) have a design showing a map of divinice that very specifically “misdraws” the border to represent her vision for divinice, rather than the legal situation. she might have coins printed to show the populace the sortsf values she wishes them to embody, such as humility or piety. theres a lot of potential for propaganda in these coins, and i really like it.
Stolisia, the arch rival of DIvinice, would absolutely not be exempt from this, though its coins arent on the same design refresh as divinices. of course, divinitian coins must update with each monarch (including during the Really Rough years :|||), whereas stolisias would mostly update to reflect new sensibilities or to prevent counterfeiting. their designs likely harken back a LOT to their revolutionary past, and a fighting spirit, and its likely whatever their state motto-thingo might be, it would likely be present on many coins. earlier on, such as during the second war, stolisian coins may also have included completely direct propaganda against divinice, showing a map of Stolisia that included the entirety of Stolis island rather than part of it
nowadays, as Stolisia shifts from an anti-divinice stance to a more peaceful slant, this would be reflected in their money too. Kaisa is likely immortalised in same way (perhaps on paper currency, like how washington is on the 1 dollar bill, right?), rather than her direct successor. they might emphasise the goodness of stolisia and its unique exports, like its crafts. fun stuff like that? or even abstract symbols of peace and goodness, to show their optimism for the future. there would obviously be reference to the raw magic blight, but itwould be presented in an optimistic way - we WILL overcome. national pride for what theyve done. heeeaaavy nationalism, id say.
Tsuliya, which is HUGE enemies with Divinice, would probably be more overt in its currency propaganda. Nirvejan, who is actually alright with divinice, would have a more positive spin, while having a negative attitude to tsuliya and insisting on drawing its maps to include the whole of Nirvejan Island (of which Tsuliya has claimed the western tip.
just some fun ideas! i really enjoyed designing the coin, honestly :p

For WBJ Day 5, I don’t have a lot of concrete thought, but I do have some small ideas! So we’ll have an informal post for this one <3 The drawing is one of my ideas for a particular location, which I’ll discuss more under the cut!
We’re just gonna discuss the two major players, with are Divinice and Stolisia!
Up first - Divinice. Divinice already had an established culture from back in the Divinitia days (pre 628), but arriving in Losiné, and particularly interacting with the Stolis, has already changed them. For the initial rulers, what was most important in architecture was the union of Stolisi and Divinitian culture. One of the pinnacles of this is the Royal Palace, which incorporates very Stolisi style buildings with some Divinitian techniques, and then the water working that Divinitians like. so thats the drawing above! The dug out gardens and moat walls are very much a divinitian thing to do, and this sort of design would actually reemerge in Santonia (via Caelum VI). so thats fun! Other architecture of theres has a very old french sort of feel, maybe greek inspired. as the cultures intermingle, and as magic becomes part of the equation, architecture would change. ornaments, like ornate pillars and lil gargoyle-y things on the ends of roofs would become common, buildings would be stone instead of wood and tile, that sort of thing!
Way further on, as they get into that whole ‘conquest’ thing, they start to incorporate a few other styles. Nirvejan and Nuli Islands, for example, are quite cold, and this influences design. its a notabout function, thick insulation and designs to keep snow off your roof, etc, and those thicker walls might start to come into new design, to help regulate interior temperature and also provide defence. They can also incoporate design from more temperate regions (Kao Islands, mostly), where rain is likely to hugest hurdle to face. stilt buildings might become common in places near rivers and the ocean, etc.
Next - Stolisia. So Stolisian architecture is ‘south divinitian’ at its beginning. theyve got a bit of that same sort of roof style, and theyve got some of the ornate, but local architecture is very functional due to the cold. theres also the mountains, which impact it. stone is the main material here, rather than wood. theres likely a region of houses carved out of giant slabs of stone, especially in more remote regions that didnt get a lot of divinitian aid (south east, particularly).
But then their architecture has to trake a drastic functional turn. the raw magic, which spreads through the ground, is dangerous to humans, and so design works to accommodate. a lot of houses are on stilts or large slabs that are on top of the ground rather than inset, with the idea being that magic wont seep there. these slabs might be made out of multiple materials in layers, so thatits even harder. solid walls, rather than seethrough fences, also become common. Due to the issue being ground up, roofs are allowed to be more decorative! stuff like that, i guess.
this ones very informal, but im behind and spent most of the day trying to draw the palace haha!

gabriel didnt get a lot of say on the Seora operation, and when it all wraps up and he’s getting reports about injuries (esther got fucked up, a few other scrapes, the car got fucked and needs repairs) and politics (the calm before the storm in divinice where any moment a news outlet will find out and drop a bombshell on the news cycle) and he’s just very unhappy. surely they could have waited. why is she so important that they had to risk the lives of some of his best soldiers and risk sparking war? which is exactly what happens. hes not happy that he called that.
he adamantly argues with his superiors that extracting Seora did not need to be done with such speed, and that it would have been possible to wait for a more opportune time when she would have been alone and could have been taken without witnesses, which his superiors do eventually have to concede. or they could have found a way to inform seora in advance of the plan to remove her at tht moment, and made a safer plan. like, ooh, getting her to go to the bathroom just before they left for the next area, at which point they could ‘kidnap’ her and leave without a bother. and everyone does have to agree that yes, in hindsight they could have handled it better.
the fact that Seora’s power is limited to the people (yknow..... the non-voting citizenry........) and she has absolutely no sway over the people in power in Divinice really pisses him off too. we go through all that effort for a SINGLE maiden!!! couldve directed that elsewhere, like to a group of people, or to just getting a maiden from SOMEWHERE ELSE. and then seora being ‘kidnapped’ sparks a fucking war and gabriel is so just so fucking tired. oh my god. he hates it. like, he’s a good guy, and once he gets over his anger at seora being ‘useless’ he’s a nice enough guy. he makes sure the rescue team arent treated like shit, to an extent (it isnt really his call because he’s only a Herald, but they are held in his specific military base and he keeps an eye on them when he can). but Holy Shit. he hates everything that led him to this point.
he does try his best to be good to his soldiers tho, because its not their faults. its not esthers fault that she got sent on an ill-planned mission or that the car got attacked by demons. no sense being a dick to her about it. and he does eventually realise that none of this is seora’s fault, even if she is an emblem for the whole stupid affair. good fun

Esther Carlisle? Who is that? Never heard of her before. I’m just a simple Dawn Maiden from the east, I’ve never visited Divinice before. You must be mistaken, sir.
A fun, hella colour inaccurate sketch of Esther’s fantastic disguise whenever she visits Divinice. The makeup is flaking, her real hair is peeking through, and her glasses can’t wholly hide her silver-blue eyes. Thankfully, most people never notice such small details. They assume its the light, or contrast, or maybe a weird makeup style. Unless they look a little too closely.....

i suppose in briefest terms, Tsuliya claims the entirety of the territory of South Divinice as its own territory, while it actually held all land west of this one river and a big chunk east, and while Nirvejan argues that they belong entirely on the west of the river and that the east belongs to Nirvejan
stolisia just really want these people to Stop Fighting but hesitantly sides with Nirvejan on a cultural basis. like, yea, nirvejani have lived in whats now your eastern quarter for centuries. thats weird.

on Azure reaaaaal quick. since i just made her up and she needs a little explaining.
so,one of the first maidens was a royal princess called Twila. she might not have been THE first, but she was the first one of prominence, and because she was the eldest child of the Queen, became Queen after her father passed away (the Kingdom followed absolute primogeniture)
however, Twila, as a maiden, could not reproduce. which meant when she finally passed away after her 30 odd year reign, the kingdom was left without a clear heir. her younger brother, Caelum XI, claimed the throne as his. which was technically true. however, some maidens (Azure in particular) argued that since Twila was directly descending from the gods tangibly (rather than in a wibbly wobbly fashion, like Caelum) it meant that only descendants of the gods should be able to hold the throne. essentially the existence of Twila invalidated the royal family’s claim to being descended from Ylais. So Azure, as a “descendent of Ylais” (and Kysro but shh), claimed she should be queen.
it sparked like a 20 year long war between the two. Azure is far younger than Caelum, but she also has a shorter projected lifespan as a Maiden (however at this time that isnt fully known). Caelums like, 40? Azures like 20.
so when the war finally ends, Azure’s around 40 years old. recognizing that her eventual death could spark an identical crisis, with remnants of the royal family (Caelum fled west and while he isnt heard from again, people claim to be descended from him and his siblings for YEARRRRSS after) vying to take her throne. so before she can be crowned Queen, she declares the Empire of Divinice, with herself as Empress, and establishes the line of succession - that is, she will personally nominate an heir from amongst her fellow maidens. and thats the way it goes! it works fine for a few cycles after her death, buuuuuut when shit gets more complex (such as the Very Messy Time) it doesnt really work. forgeries of wills, mysterious deaths, etc. Azure’s legacy successfully staved off the politics for a while, but not indefinitely, of COURSE.
