Note
In regards to playlists, mine has Superstar by Toybox, Bang On Em by Aaron Cohen, and I Threw Glass In My Friends Eyes and Now I'm On Probation by Destroy Boys, Love Shack, and of course Nikki Minaj and Ice Spice's Barbie World. I'm a Starscream fictive who knows what he likes. I would not survive the vibe check.

Losh Things That I Have Thought Very Hard About Writing But Have Not Because I Am A Lazy Child
Feel free to use any of ideas these yourself, but keep in mind I might use them at some point in the future. Tell me which is your favorite!!!!
A Brainy x Lyle thing in which Brainy is a princess in a tower guarded by a Dragon!Koko and Lyle is an assassin on the run who gets caught by Koko and then Brainy and Lyle bicker a whole ton because Brainy wants to leave and see the world but Lyle wants to stay so he can hide from the assassins.
Dirk Morgna as Freddie Mercury.
An au where Tinya is a siren and Jo is a merman who gets caught in a pool on her island. Tinya finds him after a while and nurses him back to health and they fall in love after working through all the racist and uniformed bs they’ve been taught about each other’s species.
Dream Girl and Dream Boy having a conversation (threeboot verse) after Nura is resurrected and resumes her position on the Legion roster. It is revealed they have known each other for quite some time, and have once been quite close, although they have drifted away. Nura apologizes for taking his spot, and talks Rol out of going to work on Winath, promising to find something for him to do in the Legion.
The Legionnaires as the cast and crew of a 31st century holoshow about the Titans.
Another Brainy x Lyle au where the Legionnaires attend the Legionnaire Academy of Music and Querl is the token prodigy composer until Lyle Norg joins halfway through a semester and ruins everything by composing music equal to his with rhythms and melodies and harmonies Querl hadn’t even considered. It infuriates him. Ayla thinks the whole thing is hilarious.
Snapshots of post-5YL (but without the reboot so the whole SW6 thing is still intact) Shvaughn/Sean Erin visiting Dirk Morgna’s grave at different points of his/her life (proposing to Jan, then marrying him, SW6 Dirk leaving the Legion to get married, Jan dying, the grandchildren being born, ect.) first just to yell at him, then to keep him updated on SW6 Dirk, and on and on until talking to the disgraced Legionnaire’s headstone became a sort of therapy. (Note: for this fic Shvaughn/Sean would be genderfluid switching genders once every long while)
Laurel Gand (Andromeda vers.) as the newest reincarnation of an ancient warrior protectress and guardian of the kingdom. Kara Dox, the reincarnation before Laurel, had been incredibly beloved, and had sacrificed her life to slay a great evil. Laurel chafes under Kara’s legacy and shadow, and detests her life stuck in an empty castle, living as the ward of the kingdom’s uncaring ruler, and Kara’s beloved lover, Querl Dox.
Small vignettes of the Legionnaires in a Harry Potter au through the Deathly Hallows and the Battle of Hogwarts (Querl trapped in the Room of Requirement to avoid the Carrows wondering about the fate of Lyle who was on the run, Brin and Jo comforting first years while Tinya is being tortured both of them wishing they could trade places with her, Imra Rokk and Garth trapped together in the dark dungeons of Malfoy Manor, Dirk (a newly minted Death Eater) assigned to forcefully glean information from a captured auror Shvaughn Erin, Ayla falling out of her hammock in the Room of Requirement every night screaming for Garth or Mekt or Reep or Salu or anybody, Nura kissing a sleeping Thom on the cheek then jumping from the top of Hogwarts tallest tower to prevent the Dark Lord from discovering her prophecies about him) that tell the story of how the Dark Lord was defeated from their prospectives, with little flashbacks to happier times demonstrating how the Legionnaires lives at Hogwarts are intertwined without there really being a ‘Legion’.
The Parent Trap feat. triplets Laura, Lauren, and Laurie.
(In a universe where some stupid D.C. event collided all the Legions, like Legion of 3 Worlds but permanent) A quick one-shot about stressed out SP Chief Sean Erin returning to his home in the wee hours of the morning to find all the lights on and his husband, original continuity Jan sprawled out asleep on the couch with all the other younger Jan Arrahs cuddling on him and a couple teen to young adult Shvaughn/Sean Erins snoring in nearby armchairs, a homemade Father’s Day present on the coffee table.
Rokk Krinn, a self-proclaimed Tory, but unbeknownst to his wonderful Tory wife Lydda Jath, a undercover spy for George Washington in an American Revolution au.
The story of Salu Digby and Ayla Ranzz. How they made formed their band, fell in love, got famous, fell out of love, broke up their band, went through some shit and, finally, fell back in love. (So basically Salu and Ayla as 31st century Paul McCartney and John Lennon but with a bit more romance).
X-Men au where the Legionnaires are a group of homeless mutants living in a shack in the woods Box-Car children style.
Jenni and Bart having a serious talk about the consequences of many 31st century pronouns (including the ones that Bart uses) not translating easily into 20th century English, The Flash and Max Mercury just not getting it and other time-swap gender-related issues. (Set during the Impulse/XS crossover.)
Brainy x Lyle Soulmate au where different species have different sorts of soul marks that they get at different times. Brainy’s had his, Lyle’s name in binary, since birth like most Coluans, but he still begrudgingly stays up till 2:19am on Lyle’s eighteenth birthday to watch the first words he ever said to the human appear on Lyle’s arm in Querl’s own handwriting.
Night Girl, under the cover of Shadow Lass’ dark field, uses her superhuman strength to do some (sexytimes!!) manhandling that Tasmia will never admit loving.
CW’s Saturn Girl, in her weird purpley black leather outfit, and with blond hair (after a prank with shampoo and hair dye) gets mistaken for Batgirl, and gets attacked by some thugs. Steph Brown, the legit Batgirl, swoops in to save the day, but finds Imra handling herself quite nicely. Together they kick names and take butt, and then finish up with a delicious burger from one of the multitude of restaurants around Gotham who willingly give free food to any and all Batkids.

SHELBURNE – One-on-one talks with fellow amateur radio operators as far away as Moscow are now firmly on the horizon for a Shelburne man.
The erection of two antenna towers on Zachary Mangenello’s rural property on Dorset Street — a source of contention with his neighbors for at least a year — was approved by the Telecommunications Review Board this week.
On paper, and later, in balloon tests that attempted to approximate the towers’ altitude, the structures struck some folks as too tall for the neighborhood.
Radio towers downsized
Compromises were struck along the way. The new structures will be measurably less of an eyesore. Originally conceived at 70 feet, Mangenello’s ham radio project is getting off the ground with slim, guywire-supported towers that extend up 40 and 60 feet…..READ MORE

Hey can I get some mother mother song recs? I rlly liked Little Pistol and Infinidecimal
damn you’re speaking my language
first off i’m gonna tell you to listen to both Eureka and The Sticks all the way through, in order, cause those both have fucking awesome thematic coherence and work really well as concept albums
individual tracks… i’ll go by album, and i’m also gonna try and give you a little bit of what each album is like. under cut. sorry if this is too long but i get this question from time to time so i wanna be thorough lol
Touch Up: this is their first album so it’s fairly rough around the edges, but that’s not a problem as far as i’m concerned. thematically it’s all over the place but there are still some very good songs in here
- Oh Ana (mentally ill god complex but also powerlessness feels, cw for self harm / suicide in the lyrics)- Love and Truth (wanting more out of life but being unable to achieve your dreams)- Neighbour (stalking/spying cw; about voyeurism, spying on your neighbor, but feeling that it’s justified because you think they’d do the same to you given the chance)- Ball Cap (i’m honestly not sure what it’s about, but it’s really good)- Touch Up (holding yourself to impossibly high standards of beauty, to the point where it’s obviously self-destructive)
O My Heart - as an album this plays like “we just started listening to Pixies and we’re obsessed, also every track now needs extended intros and outros” but don’t get me wrong, some of their best songs are off of this album
- O My Heart (feeling that something’s wrong with you but being unable to fix it)- Body of Years (no clue what it’s about, but this is a great track regardless; when they do this one live they always mash it up with another song, which is super fun. check out the iTunes live version they did, where they mashed it up with Gouge Away by Pixies)- Body (wanting to stop existing in material form; cw for gore, i guess)- Ghosting (feeling like you’ve become a non-entity in your relationship with your lover, and wanting to reconnect; or, taken less metaphorically, it’s about being a ghost in love with the human you’re haunting, if you want. either way, the descant rules)- Hay Loft (really fun upbeat track about two lovers who fuck in a hay loft and then have to hide from the one lover’s dad. i’ve also decided it’s about lesbians)
Eureka - a bit of a departure from their earlier sound, but in a really really good way. this is my favorite album of all time so it was really hard not to recommend every single track on it
- The Stand (lyrically seems to be some sort of uncomfortable interview; musically it’s one of their best tracks, has a fun give-and-take structure, and also when they do it live ryan always jumps up and down during the instrumental parts)- Simply Simple (about being dependent and needy, like an overgrown baby, but the song doesn’t really judge the narrator for it either. really pretty song)- Problems (this is like the indie rock version of MCR’s I’m Not Okay)- Aspiring Fires (about attempting to explain how serious your mental illness is to a loved one, and feeling like you have no choice but to lose your grip on reality and yourself)- Calm Me Down (sex as a pure and healing force. nice counterpart to all the songs this band does about how fucked up romance is)
The Sticks - although Eureka is my favorite i maintain that this is their best album. you’ve already heard two tracks off it so i’ll skip those even though i love them both
- The Sticks (wanting to escape civilization and go into the wilderness, live simply, maybe shack up with a pretty girl, get away from the world)- Let’s Fall In Love (the lyrics make love seem base and animalistic; prior to the chorus, you’d be more likely to assume it was a song about sex)- Happy (the best song about depression i’ve ever heard, honestly. captures that feeling of emotionlessness and emptiness perfectly)- Bit By Bit (lyrically very similar to The Sticks, but also contains the line “fuck off, all you people on the ground” which imo is in the running for best lyric ever)- Cry Forum (seeing all that’s wrong with society and being unable to help or to get to the heart of what’s wrong)
Very Good Bad Thing - not as thematically tight as the last two albums, but a big step forward in terms of sound (i think they got a new producer on this one, actually)
- Get Out the Way (loud aggressive song about, essentially, social anxiety)- Monkey Tree (probably the happiest song this band has ever made. back on the themes of escaping society and living simply and happily in the wild)- Reaper Man (feeling like a bad person, struggling with self-acceptance and self-love)- I Go Hungry (cw disordered eating; starving yourself to be beautiful, or for enlightenment, or for Something)- Very Good Bad Thing (being in messed-up, star-crossed, destructive love with somebody, and wanting to leave but staying because it’s just as good as it is bad)
No Culture - their latest album, and another step forward in terms of sound; playing a lot with loss of innocence as a theme
- Love Stuck (about creator’s block, according to ryan. he wrote it trying to work through his own creator’s block. really upbeat and catchy)- The Drugs (the cw here is obvious, but it’s about coming out of a depressive, drug-addled funk because you found something better than all that)- Back in School (being trapped by the educational system. at least one member of this band is really messed up about childhood)- Mouth of the Devil (kind of missing the times when you and your friends were doing a ton of drugs, feeling the call of your previous life, and trying to stop yourself from slipping back into it)- No Culture (about cultural appropriation)
BONUS ROUND - B-sides, bonus tracks, and cover songs (you can find most if not all of these on youtube and elsewhere)
- Heart Heavy (avoiding romance because it seems awful)- All Gone (cw for self-harm and suicide; trying to get rid of whatever it is that’s wrong with you but being unable to succeed)- Love to Death (being hurt by loving too much)- Kiss Off (Violent Femmes cover and honestly one of the few cover songs i prefer over the original, and i quite like Violent Femmes. this takes the song to the next level, imo, and i don’t feel ridiculous comparing it to Nirvana’s The Man Who Sold The World cover in terms of elevating the original track)- Empty Hands (seeking to help and be helped but being unable to do either)
okay there you have it, i’ve gone on long enough

Buying a “New” Radio
I look at Ebay from time-to-time, and lately I’ve been having a little too much fun. A Ten Tec Century 21 CW Transceiver (model 570) attracted my attention recently. Released in 1975, the “570” was a solid-state radio intended for Novice hams and covered five bands: 80, 40, 20 (and with accessory crystals) 15 and 10 meters.  Its “Double Direct Conversion” receiver could detect SSB and CW signals, but had only about 30 watts output. It was being sold as a “part only” device with at least two problems. The main tuning dial was frozen and it didn’t seem to have any output on transmit. Although the shipping was a little expensive, the auction price was modest price given the radio’s cult status with CW aficionados. I had always had a soft spot for Ten Tec products.
My History with Ten Tec
Back in the 80’s, I lusted after the Triton IV digital. It was expensive even though I had a good job engineering at a local TV station. Hoping for a deal, I went to the local dealer and mentioned my interest. He wondered if I could help him repair radios. He was both an amateur and CB radio dealer, and had a backlog of service tickets. Before long the deal was struck: if I would work on Saturdays repairing radios, the Triton IV was mine. I don’t remember the time frame, but I probably worked at least several months. I later traded that radio for an ICOM 720A, which I still have, but I always regretted selling the Triton IV. I worked a lot of DX on that rig.
Solving the frozen dial problem
Fast forward 40 years, and the Century 21 arrived from the Ebay seller. He had packed it very carefully, and the radio was in good cosmetic shape given its age and Ten Tec’s use of contact paper for exterior finishes. I opened the top cover and could see the reason for the frozen dial immediately: the plastic spur gear that connects the Permeability Tuned Oscillator (PTO) to the frequency dial had split in two. I took the front panel off  and I had the part out in no time. There were two clean breaks and both halves were complete. I could repair it.
The repaired tuning dial gear
A word about the plastic used for these gears. In the past, I’ve tried repairing them with super glue and epoxy with mixed results. Neither adhere well to the plastic. I recently discovered a product that works though: Loctite Epoxy Plastic Bonder. It adds a solvent that attacks the plastic, allowing the epoxy to bond. The result is strong, machinable and permanent. About 30 minutes later, the gear was as good as new. There was a some squeeze out in the center hub and around the gear teeth, but a drill bit and an x-acto knife cleaned that up.
Documentation for the Ten Tec Century 21
The Ten Tec Manual
Manuals for these radios are not hard to find, with several helpful hams posting PDFs from their personal copies. I was able to find a copy at rigreference.com. The manuals  are very helpful with more than just installation and operation. They discuss the radio’s theory of operation and how each section works in detail. Voltage readings and schematics are also included. I was grateful for this help because I knew that the “no output” problem was a little more challenging.
Diagnosing the symptoms
I learned years ago that no matter what the problem, it’s a good idea to check power supply voltages first. The Century 21 is powered by an internal, transformer-isolated  power supply that supplies a regulated 12.6 volts. It’s got a beefy transformer and the supplied voltage was correct. Although there was audible white noise when it was powered, suggesting that the audio stages were working, connecting an antenna didn’t change the white noise much — even when changing bands or the PTO setting. Pressing the “set drive” button did mute the radio, and advancing the drive control did increase the reading on the “input power meter”, but not very much. Checking the output with an oscilloscope didn’t show much output, and it wasn’t anywhere near the expected frequency.
We have a diagnosis (With a little help from my friends)
The PTO
There are several good resources online and I found specific help on the QRZ.com Century 21 Restoration Forum. A couple of things stood out: these radios often had bad final output transistors, and also often needed to have the PTO rebuilt. Thinking that the finals might be bad, I started working backwards from the the final amp. Checking the output of the “Low Level Driver” board, I was surprised to see very little output and at the wrong frequency. Going back to the “Mixer” board, it’s output also had an unrelated frequency at the output. This is a simple radio (something I love about Ten Tec’s products of the era) and there were only two other possibilities. Either the PTO was off frequency, or the Local Oscillator (also on the “Mixer” board) wasn’t right. It turned out to be the PTO. It was running, but at about 2.87 MHz, and it didn’t change when the tuning dial was moved.
Partial PTO Schematic showing the coils
The PTO is the only module in the radio where voltage readings are not  provided. The QRZ forum and a couple of YouTube videos encouraged me to dive in though, and  I decided to remove the PTO from the radio. It would be easier to work on, and should I need to rebuild it, I would have to remove it anyway. Supplied with power from a 9-volt battery, I looked at the output on a scope. Nice sine waves at about 2.87 MHz. No change when I turned the tuning knob, even though I could see the ferrite slug moving in and out of a coil. The frequency should have been changing between about 5 and 5.5 MHz. Was something wrong with that coil? I couldn’t see any damage, and the wire leads seemed firmly attached to both the coil and the circuit board.
The broken coil
Looking at the schematic for the PTO, I could see a continuity check of the  tuning coil  (“L3″ on the schematic) wouldn’t tell me much since it was connected in parallel with”L2”.  “L1” and “L2,” are connected in series and used to set the overall frequency and band spread of the PTO.  I unsoldered one lead of “L3” and tested it with an ohmmeter. No connection. That explained why there was no frequency change when the ferrite slug moved and why the frequency was so low. Without “L3” in parallel with the other two coils, the effective inductance would be higher, resulting in a lower oscillator frequency. Getting the coil out of the tiny box involved removing the tuning mechanism. I was going to rebuild the PTO after all.
Repair and Rebuild
Installing the repaired coil
I’ll spare the tedious details of repairing the coil except to say that the coil dope was difficult to remove. I ended up using a small file and an x-acto knife to abrade and chip enough off to reconnect the broken lead. Also, I had to repair both leads. Both were well connected to the coil dope yet had failed underneath. I haven’t seen that before.
The dissassembled PTO
There are two good videos from K5CYF showing how to rebuild the PTO and an excellent Web page from N5ESE (captured in 2005 on archive.org) with more detailed instructions. Both mention the use of a Ten Tec “PTO Rebuild Kit” which may no longer be available. With their help, I was able to reassemble my PTO using the existing parts. The good news? The PTO now worked, and was producing RF in the expected range from 5 to 5.5 MHz.  The vernier also seemed to work reasonably well. BTW, this PTO design was used in several products of the era, so knowing how to service them is useful for the Ten Tec collector.
Testing the PTO after assembly
Output from the working PTO
Success! (or Back to the Future)
After reinstalling the PTO, the radio had output. 80 meters was a little low at 12.5 watts out, but the other bands came close to or met original specs of 25-30 watts out. The PTO was surprisingly close to frequency after having major surgery, requiring only a slight touch-up. The receiver was originally rated at 1 uV or less for 10 dB S+N/N, and I could indeed hear signals from a test generator set to 1 uV.
How is it? Like a trip down memory lane — and it has a few quirks. The direct conversion receiver hears signals on both sides of zero beat meaning that a CW signal will be heard in two places on the dial. This takes a little getting used to for us modern Superhet owners, but works fine in practice. The three section audio filters (2.5, 1 and 0.5 KHz) work well for voice and CW and I remember their audio quality fondly from the Triton IV. Best of all, and perhaps why they’ve become a favorite of CW ops, is the smooth, full break-in CW. This was novel in the late 70’s and sold quite a few radios. And as we’ve seen, it’s nice to work on a radio that it’s possible to understand. If you like CW, and have a chance to get one of these gems, don’t pass it up.  I think I’m going to have some fun with this radio.

Back To The Magic
The magic band has always had a strong pull on me, ever since being put under its spell in the late 60s. I quickly learned that the surest way to guarantee a band opening was to leave the house for a few hours. Invariably when returning, the other local 6m addicts would gleefully describe everything that you had ‘just missed’. The 6m gods were rarely forgiving and this unfailing behaviour became part of the band's mystique. This odd love-hate relationship continues to this day but with the FT8 mode being used almost exclusively now on 6m, it’s your computer that now snickers at you for any untimely excursions from the shack ... showing you, in any delightful color scheme that you choose, all of the DX that you 'just missed' once again! It happened to me again yesterday, while out in the yard stacking next winter's firewood. It was just a short excursion, as the eastern stations were working Europeans and all of the VE4 beacons were very loud back here on the coast. The possibilities of a link to the European path kept my excursion to only 10 minutes but sure enough, there it was on my WSJT-X list of decodes .... several CQs from CT7ANG in Portugal! My laptop could barely stop giggling. This would have been the first PNW-EU QSO of the summer had I been maintaining vigilance.l! 163315 -14 0.1 738 ~ CQ CT7ANG IM67 I continued to stack firewood and to watch the band more closely, knowing that every once in awhile, for entertainment purposes, the prop gods will toss out a bone or two, just to keep you on the hook. A later check indicated that CT1HZE’s CQs had been decoded just a few moments earlier ... there was renewed hope! 185100 -2 0.2 2134 ~ CQ NA CT1HZE IM57 Joe’s strong FT8 CQ popped-up again a few minutes later and he came right back to my initial call. Although that was it for the day, the 2019 PNW-EU path had begun!

I’m still somewhat ambivalent about FT8 and its ‘coldness’ when it comes to person-to-person interaction, but since most of the DX action on 6m is now digital, it’s either embrace it or miss out. At the moment, I’m at least prepared to hug it and see how it behaves. If it puts more Europeans and new DXCCs into my magic band log, then that’s a worthwhile investment. Unlike way too many others, I’m not prepared to let my computer endlessly CQ for hours at a time. In a crowded local environment, with big strong signals being the norm, this method of operating is simply disrespectful to other amateurs as this mostly useless CQing will usually make reception of any weaker signals impossible. FT8 is a weak-signal mode and the interfaces used do not handle extremely strong local signals very well. I would urge others to think about this poor operating practice and adopt what has always proved to be the best tactic for catching DX ... listen, listen, listen. The same tactic works just as well on FT8 as it does on CW. Back to stacking firewood but having tossed me a bone yesterday, I’m sure the prop gods will be out to get even for awhile! from DXER ham radio news http://bit.ly/2F8k92a via IFTTT
