Interview with Arc System Works (2023) - Part 2

Finally, we have delivered our own love letter with the second half of our interview (Comunidad Arc System Works x Anime Fighting Game Community News) with Arc System Works!

A lot of companies are starting to develop their games in Unreal Engine 5. Can we expect the next Arc System Works’ game to run in this engine?

Guilty Gear -Strive- Producer: Ken Miyauchi

We are constantly investigating and researching the potential on development on the new engine. We cannot promise anything, but perhaps in the future it might happen.

We have seen the announcement of a Blazblue rogue like. Are there any plans to release that game worldwide?

It is still a title under development, and we are unable to disclose any details about it.

Note from CASW: The game already has a Steam page and a global Twitter account as of now, so we can pretty much give for granted that it will be available worldwide, however, we do not know if it will be available worldwide just for Steam or Steam/Mobile.

Guilty Gear Strive is still super successful, with two characters left to be released in the second season pass. Are you already thinking in a third season pass? There are still a lot of fan favourites out of the roster.

I cannot answer to this yet, all I can say for now is that I personally would like to also see more characters appearing in Guilty Gear -Strive-.

Unfortunately, we don’t usually get a lot of Guilty Gear or Blazblue merchandising here in Europe. Do you have future plans to open an European branch? I’ve already seen a big effort from the company taking into consideration our region when it was announced that GGST offered Spanish texts among many other languages back then.

We are in the midst of preparation for better outreach and coverage for the European region. We cannot disclose any details at the moment, but we do hope to provide better and more timely services to our fans in the European region.

We have seen Blazblue taking part of different genres like rhythm games, 3D arena, tag fighting game, gacha and full visual novel if we include Xblaze. Do you have any interest on giving Guilty Gear the same treatment? Personally, I think that a rhythm game could be cool.

I personally am also interested for Guilty Gear to take part in different genres, like "Guilty Gear 2: Overture", in the future. No promises yet, but there is a chance.

I like the fact that Xbox is getting ASW fighting games, plus, I love the idea of implementing crossplay because that allows the whole fighting game community to play together regardless the platform we choose for playing. Is crossplay being considered as a default feature for your upcoming projects?

This is pretty much the same question as to the previous one above on rollback and crossplay - it depends on the scale and scope of each individual project.

Are there plans to add any option to create our own colour palette for the characters and the effects of their attacks? Something similar to Melty Blood: Type Lumina.

It is an interesting feature. We actually do have similar discussions internally, but no promises yet. Personally, I would also like to see more color options for the players.

Besides new characters, do you have any interest in offering any additional single player or multiplayer modes for Guilty Gear Strive? I would like to see mini games like those added in Street Fighter 6, for example.

We have also received many requests for additional single player modes like M.O.M. etc. from players.

I myself am also interested on these side-game modes other than just the main fighting part, but I cannot promise anything yet.

What do you think of the F2P model of business? Do you think that it fits with your games?

The F2P model has been on the talks within the company, both development and marketing departments.

We cannot disclose anything concrete yet, but we do feel the potential of it.

It is less on "whether the F2P model works on our games", but more on "how do we make it fit our game".

Since Arc System Works made the change to Unreal Engine, we haven’t seen any specific interactions between characters like the classic Ky VS Sol or Ragna VS Jin. Instead, we have been getting some specific conversations. However, we have had something like this for Dragon Ball Fighter Z with Goku VS Frieza or Teen Gohan VS Cell. I would like to ask if we will see any of those rivalry interactions for your main series again in the future.

The special character interactions is something that I also loved watching in the classic fighting games. I would personally want to push for adding those dramatic intros too as I believe it is a great way to show the character personalities and relationship with other characters, but it requires huge resources to making those, as much work as though adding a new overdrive for the characters.
