"You know, if this whole thing ended, and there were only two pilots left up in the air... it'd be me and it'd be you, Buck." "Don't count on it."

That Croz and Rosie protected Buck's locker for eighteen months is just hnnghghh.
You know they never opened it, barely looked at it. I have decided it wasn't stored away, it was just tucked under the bunk. When newbies rotated in, and tried to move it or god forbid open it, Hellfire would rain upon them. We do not touch Major Cleven's shit. That's Buck's Bunk, you're just renting it.. Show some goddamn respect.
Not only did they need to believe that he, and Bucky, and the rest of their friends and men were alive, and would return, they were absolutely totally terrified of what would be unleashed on them when Bucky got back only to learn they'd sent Buck's locker back to Marge.

No WAIT you mean Bucky’s little ridiculous offhand comment years ago that if there were only two planes left it would be them that was obviously hyperbole but carried the sentiment was something Gale had been holding onto this entire time and actually really did believe??? He’s not a gambling person but this random bet had kept him going and alive and he believed it because Bucky said it and no matter how bleak things got on missions or in the camp he held on to that??? And now they really think they’re all going to get killed and suddenly he realizes that his little comfort belief that he *knew* was ridiculous but just couldn’t tell himself that because he needed it, now is ripped away? He didn’t realize it was his rock until now he’s suddenly adrift more than he ever has since he was a kid? The fact that he actually believed it broke my heart, it was what he was holding on to this entire time. Hug him please.

GUYS GUYS GUYS
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I just took a closer look at what book Bucky was reading when the mission's on delay, and he's reading "Guys and Dolls" by Damon Runyon. Damon Runyon, I thought...then it hit me! Damon Runyon was the journalist that John Egan famously modeled his particular manner of speaking after!! I scoured through my 100th BG book collection and found where I read it! It was in "Luck of the Draw" by navigator Frank Murphy! Frank is played by Jonas Moore in the above scene!
Luck of the Draw, pg. 118
"Although he was from Wisconsin, he was captivated by the idiomatic speech of the characters in New York columnist Damon Runyon's popular stories of the tough "guys and dolls" that were popular in New York City before the war. He punctuated his speech with phrases such as, "I'm Mrs. Egan's bad boy, John." He was prewar Air Corps and seemed to feel that he had to live up to Hollywood's image of a dashing pilot-but unlike his standoffish predecessor, he was jovial and friendly. I liked Bucky Egan."
I thought this detail was amazing and wanted to share!!
