You'd moved to Austin with your dad and twin brother T.K. when they came out from New York the other year. It had been a big decision, but your life had hit a bit of a rut in the Big Apple anyway, and you were in need of a fresh start.
It was easy to pick up your old job as an emergency dispatcher once you got out there, and you were glad you could support your brother with everything he had been going through.
You hadn't meant to start seeing Matteo in the process.
You'd met him at the firehouse a few times before he ended up on the other end of one of your 911 calls. The victim had dropped their phone and he'd picked it up, thanking you for your help in a way no one had bothered before. It had been sweet, and honestly you'd smiled about it the rest of the day.
When you'd met him at the bar later with Grace and the others, he'd actually noticed you like he had on the call. You were used to being a wallflower, and you were usually okay with that, but Matteo saw you.
After nights spent chatting after hours, one thing led to another... Oops.
It had been a kiss, one you'd lost yourself in for longer than you should after he'd walked you to your car, and you'd broken away as soon as your brain caught up to what was happening. Bad idea, you both knew it, and you'd made your way home before either of you could say another word about what had happened.
You'd planned on avoiding him, at least until you'd processed your feelings, but fate had other plans.
You were at your dad's the next day. You were off and he'd asked you to walk Buttercup while he was called away to headquarters. He'd told you Matteo was out and there was no one to watch him, but clearly his plans had changed.
"Oh, hey Y/N," he greeted you somewhat awkwardly as you entered the house with Buttercup, unleashing him as Matteo wandered into the kitchen.
"Heyy," you managed, letting an awkward silence fall as you both stopped in your tracks. Why were you like this? You could feel yourself going red straight away, hoping you could blame it on the heat you'd just been out in. "I was just, walking..." You pointed to Buttercup like that hadn't been obvious.
"Yeah, Owen mentioned he'd asked you to do that," Matteo nodded, the sound of Matteo putting his glass on the counter the only thing to break the silence that followed, again.
"I should probably, get going then," you blurted, unsure of what else to do, and not wanting to make the situation more uncomfortable by sticking around.
Matteo said nothing at first, so you turned to let yourself out, when his brain kicked into gear. "No, no hey wait," he called back, moving around the counter and taking a few steps towards you, "I mean, please."
You paused with your hand on the door handle and turned back to face him.
"I was... out of line last night?" He tried, phrasing like a question as you knitted your brow, so he tried again, "I mean, are you mad at me?"
"Mad? No," you shook your head.
"It's just, you seem to be avoiding me a bit," he said, almost sounding a little nervous.
"I'm just," you found the right words, "not sure what it meant, I guess, I didn't think you liked me like that." Gods, how old were you? Why was this kind of thing always so difficult?
"Didn't think... you didn't?" He laughed light-heartedly, but not in a way that made you feel embarrassed, the opposite actually, relieved. "Judd said I was so obvious that it was a wonder Captain Strand hadn't added me to his 'hit' list, so to speak."
You laughed at this quotation marks and tucked your hair behind your ear. "I thought maybe you were just being nice."
"I mean, yeah," he smiled, "but I was also flirting... unless, you'd rather all I had been doing was being nice, in which case I'll back off-" His demeanour changed with the possibility that he'd crossed a major line, worry in his eyes.
"No, I mean, I don't, I didn't mind," you stuttered, but you saw him visibly relax.
"You didn't?" He checked hopefully.
"No," you replied, moving further into the room as you realised you were still poised at the doorway to leave.
Matteo met you in the middle, "well in that case..." he kissed you again, testing the waters at first, before going back in for a more heated kiss.
You were both lost in the moment, so lost that you didn't notice the door open until you heard TK exclaim: "what!?"
You both jumped apart with a start at the sound, turning to see TK, Carlos and Owen frozen in the doorway. TK was smiling and laughing, Carlos a step behind looking with a worried expression at your dad, who was seething with rage. You could see the cogs in Carlos' head turn, probably wondering what charges he was going to have to bring to his boyfriend's dad any second.
"Chavez," Owen said slowly as Matteo audibly gulped.
"Cap," he replied nervously, mouth suddenly very dry.
"You're going to want to be out of my sight, in the next few seconds," your dad told him, voice low.
"Dad-" you tried but he shook his head, every word and move deliberate.
TK, still grinning like an idiot, gave Matteo a small nod as if to say 'go'.
But Matteo, bless his heart, didn't move. "I really do like your daughter Cap, I wasn't trying to-"
Owen took a step forward, causing Matteo to take an instinctive step back. Carlos took a step forward too, keeping his eye on Owen as TK leaned against the wall, a keen spectator. You rolled your eyes at your brother as he gave his eyebrows a quick, amused raise in your direction. You could imagine him with popcorn right about now.
You shook your head and stepped in between Matteo and Owen. "Dad, we can talk about this."
"Not- not right now," Owen said, addressing you though his eyes were on the person behind you, "as my therapist would say, it is better to have a rational conversation when you're calmer than an argument in the moment."
Oh, you could hear the calm anger lacing his voice. Somehow it was worse than if he was yelling.
"Me, leaving right now isn't me chickening out," Matteo said to you, unable to tear his eyes from Owen's deathly glare, "it's just-"
"Self-preservation," you finished for him, "I get it." And you did, you'd had other boyfriends before, after all, all of whom had had to face the test of Owen Strand. Most didn't pass.
Matteo backed out of the kitchen, bumping into the counter, not taking his eyes off of Owen like a wild animal about to pounce on his prey.
"Not fast enough," Owen warned, taking a half step forward as Matteo made a break for it out the back door. A silence settled in the room after he left, broken only by T.K's chuckles in the corner.
"Dad..." you fixed your eyes on your father with a sickly sweet smile that had always worked to get out of trouble when you were younger.
"Oh, that isn't going to work on me this time, he's lucky I'm not actually a Texan, otherwise I'd be loading my shotgun," he advised, running his hand through his hair, "... hey, Carlos-"
"You cannot have my gun," Carlos answered too quickly for Owen to finish.
"Your... Carlos I was not going to ask for your gun," Owen gave a short, breathy laugh, then tilted his head slightly in though, "although..."
"Dad," T.K shook his head.
"Kidding, kidding," he promised, looking back to Carlos, "I was just going to ask if you could grab some beers out of the fridge, I think I'm going to need a drink for this conversation."
"Right, on it," Carlos said, making a beeline for the kitchen like he'd rather be heading out the back with Matteo. T.K followed him with a smirk and a wink at you as you silently begged him not to leave you alone with Owen.
"Now, young lady," oh, when he called you that, you knew you were in for it. You closed your eyes and sighed, bracing yourself and you turned back on your heels to face your father, "you and I are going to have a little talk."
