Happy 80th Birthday, Pete Quaife !

Happy birthday to the funny and social Kink ! One of the founding members, he stayed from the beggining until 1966, then came back later and stayed until early 1969. He's also the Kink with the longest full name !

First of all, I'd like to share a video YouTube suggested me. I couldn't stop laughing at what he said at the beggining 😂😭

Next... When I think about Pete, I immediately think about the Starstruck music video. Even though it's a bittersweet video, it's heartwarming to see the Kinks having fun. Also, Dave was surprisingly clingy towards Pete here 😊

[Pete done ! I'm a bit disappointed with the way I drew him, he doesn't look like himself (just in case, I used pictures of him from between the Village Green Preservation Society era to his Mapleoak era)... I could have done better.]

Happy 76th Birthday, John Gosling !

Happy birthday to the incredibly musically gifted Kink ! He was the pianist from 1970, joining just in time to contribute to Lola vs. Powerman, until 1978 when he left after Misfits alongside Andy Pyle. He was also one of the OG Kast-Off Kinks member ! Due to his long hair, and his beard, he was nicknamed 'the Baptist' after his ressemblance with paintings of John the Baptist.

First of all, I absolutely have to share the story of when he joined the band, as it was told in Ray Davies: A Complicated Life... I'm not in the place to forgive him or not, but I understand why he heard 'the Kings'. I'm French, and in France, if you ask someone about the Kinks, there's a 50/50 chance someone will get it wrong.

Something that really defines him is the fact that he appeared in a lot of iconic costumes through his Kinky career, including a gorilla costume in Apeman, the viking costume he interrupted a meeting with, a costume with goggles and wings in Supersonic Rocket Ship, the Vicar costume for the Preservation acts, the Soap Opera costume (the one the band members wore, with the bright orange wigs), and the schoolboy costume for Schoolboys in Disgrace !

The Kast-Off Kinks' website has this interesting interview of him. It's in the 'Special' section of the website.

As for my favourite song where I think he's the highlight... Definitely Ducks on the Wall !! This is one of my favourite Kinks songs of all-time, and I think his keyboards were the highlight here !

As I'm writing this, it's like 9pm and I have to go to sleep soon, so I'll conclude this quickly. Every time I think about him, I feel a bit sad, even though I never actually met him. He passed away shortly after I became a fan of the band, and I only really started to get interested in members outside the iconic lineup after reading the Davies brothers' autobiographies weeks later. It was especially Dave's first book that showed me a new perspective on him.

(Finally wrote the draft inside my notes! Wow! ...other than that, university makes me incredibly sleepy (it's a bit of a struggle when every teacher asks you to spare one hour for their subject)... Not really proud of the drawing, I feel like I could have done a hundred times better because I feel he looks too gangly... I could have done better.)

Happy 76th Birthday, Gordon Edwards !

Today, we are celebrating the birthday of the Kink who stayed in the band for the shortest amount of time, since he only stayed during 1978, replacing John Gosling and then being replaced himself by Ian Gibbons. There are not a lot of informations about him around the Internet, so I tried to gather some content about him. And while searching for information, I found out he was Welsh ??

First, I'm going to share some videos I found on YouTube. Here's a video of the Pretty Things during the time where he was in the band. I knew he was part of the band previous to being with the Kinks, but I was surprised to see he had such a large part in their sound during the mid 70s !

Now, here are two videos of Gordon, alongside Ray, performing some Kinks songs acapella. First link is Lola, second link is Waterloo Sunset.

Next, here are some extracts of "Ray Davies: A Complicated Life" related to Gordon.

I wish I could add more, but the other books doesn't seem to mention him much...

Finally, I don't really know how to conclude this post... Maybe I'll add more things through the reblogs. Maybe I won't.

[Now, for the long talk, this post is the first of a (hopefully) long series where I celebrate the Kinks' birthdays with some fanart while sharing some content about them. I'm going to try to keep the costumes consistent, making them look the same way as mobile games' birthday cards (a bit like how Bandori and D4DJ and Project Sekai had matching birthday outfits for their characters).

I'll try to stay committed to it, but I am still uncertain about whether my hyperfixation will still be here by July or not. I originally planned to wait until February, but for that reason, I decided to start in December so I could do Gordon and Pete sooner.]

Happy 80th Birthday, Mick Avory !

Happy Birthday to the strong pillar of the Kinks ! He joined the band in 1964 following an audition, he stayed with the band for 20 years before taking his final bow I'm 1984... only to get hired at Konk afterwards, where he stays for a few years. He's also an OG member of the Kast-Off Kinks and, alongside Dave Clarke (unrelated to the drummer), one of the two OG members still in the band as of 2024.

Honestly... There are way too many things I wanted to say about him, because he has such a direct or an indirect influence on the Kinks history, except that I'm only limited to 10 pictures per post. Therefore, it makes it impossible to use my usual posting style for these posts...

So instead, here's a list of bits of information I've read about him :

-He once said that Sonny Bono and Cher needed to consult a plastic surgeon for nosejobs.

-He once hijacked(?) a limousine and took some of the Kinks, backing singers and staff (it was during the Preservation Acts era) to an Indian restaurant (I already posted the 'Baptist ate the bill' extract on his own bday post, but cropped the beggining).

-Mick became a model around 1966 because a man who worked in a boutique (M. McGrath, possibly renamed as O'Brien in X-Ray, not 100% sure, but there are way too many coincidences and things in common for me to not make the connection) fell in love with him.

-Stripped at a party because he wanted to prove to Ray that the concert promoter was gay (this is, in fact, the beginning of the David Watts story).

-Something I recently noticed while looking at pictures of the band, is that he has(had?) a scar between his bottom lip and chin. He seemingly got it around the same time as the Cardiff Incident, and it was visible on pictures until the early 70s.

-His father designed the iconic 'Kinky boots' logo !

-During the Kast-Off Kinks' performances, he sings lead on 'Dedicated Follower of Fashion' (apparently, it was Dave Clarke's idea).

-He's the one who took Ray with him to clubs frequented by drag queens, which gave birth to the hit song 'Lola' !

Talking about Lola, here's a link to a Lola TV performance just because I like his (and Ray's) clothes there.

(I think I already said what I thought about the art earlier this morning. Not my proudest post, since I feel like while I tried to do 'too much', in the end it feels more like it wasn't enough because I tried to do too much.)

Happy 77th Birthday, Dave Davies !

Happy birthday to the Kink who changed the British Invasion scene with an amp and a razor ! Even though the Kinks' world domination was quickly stopped while at the height of the movement, 'You Really Got Me' and its tantalizing guitar solo went through the decades and inspired countless bands.

It's hard to find interesting information about Dave, because most of it is already available on the Internet. He's one of the two main faces of the band, after all (alongside brother Ray)...

First of all, since Dave has a solo career, I'm going to share my (emphasis on 'my') favourite tracks from his first two solo albums, AFL1-3063 and Glamour. I haven't listened to the rest of his discography yet, but I really enjoyed his first two albums.

Next one... I'm starting to run out of ideas. Bought the Lola vs Powerman album today and while looking at it, I decided to take this fun picture with a clear photocard I got from an ITZY album.

[Please note that I was still working on the next parts of the post when Tumblr decided now was the time to upload it. I'll go back there when a new idea will pop in my head, and I'll update through reblogs. ✌️]

(I absolutely had to draw Dave in the boots. As for the haircut, it was hard to choose, as he had many great looks, but I had to go with his Arthur-era hair (around 1969)... It's just his best haircut in my opinion. I'm sorry for the underwhelming post 😭...)

Happy Tumblr anniversary to me (I seriously need to use that app more often) !

I wanted to sketch something but I didn't really knew what to draw and I'm busy so I couldn't spend too much time on it, so in the end I sketched Gaelio from the anime Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans and Rick Nielsen from the band Cheap Trick to represent the hyperfixation I had when I joined Tumblr, and my current hyperfixation !

These two hyperfixations have nothing in common, but it's two hyperfixations that I genuinely thought I wouldn't have more than a year ago (I need to talk about how and why I started to listen to Cheap Trick, as well as some other bands, someday but it would make this post too long. I'll definitely write it once I'll have time).
