headcanon 6 (cinnamon roll peter quill continued)

this headcanon was inspired by a comment left by the amazing, talented @aliasrocket in response to my humble headcanon 3 and after much musing it did not turn out at all how i expected but still feels right (to me anyway)

human terran cinnamon-roll peter quill aka star-lord doesn’t know what the fuck “blue lives matter” means when he sees it on that one guy’s t-shirt, and you’re a little worried about explaining it to him because it’s like, forty years’ worth of racial injustice and institutionalized white supremacist murder, and that's just like, the basics. plus pete was an eight-year-old white boy who got scooped in fuckin missouri in ‘88 so you kinda assume he carries his blind optimism about everything else terran into his associations with the police as well

but when you’re done trying to (messily) explain and he’s looking at you with big horrified eyes, what comes out of his mouth is “but…don’t people know by now?? acab???” because what he does remember (and what you forgot) is that meredith quill, with her kind eyes and soft hugs, was a child of 60s and 70s counterculture, lover to an undocumented space-man who didn’t even share her species, and an unmarried mother in the 80s, and she was absolutely a radical fuckin leftist in the time of reagan

(but his memories of his grandfather and mother talking in hushed worried tones in front of the evening news and the morning paper - about the war on drugs or the aids epidemic - are fuzzy at best, and it will always be harder for him to grasp the new and updated miseries, like bathroom-laws and voter suppression and don't-say-gay legislation and camps full of kids at the border)
