So… the Metropolitan Opera did something that is so respectable.
With all the Oppenheimer hype, they’ve made their recording of John Adams’ opera Doctor Atomic available for free streaming (until the 27th I believe).
IT IS BEAUTIFUL. AND HAUNTING. YOU WILL NOT REGRET THIS.
The cast. EXQUISITE! I literally gasped so hard I quit breathing at one point in the 2nd act! Just… watch this if you’re into opera or want to see another viewpoint of Oppenheimer and the Manhattan project.
Also, the libretto is taken from letters and first-hand accounts. The aria “Batter My Heart” is in my top 5 arias of all time.
Sorry I’m nerding out, but seriously. Go watch this!

I have no plans to see Oppenheimer. Here's why:
To begin with, the last film directed by Christopher Nolan that I saw was Dunkirk, and I enjoyed that in spite of two important things: the sound design, which was realistically noisy but got in the way of, y'know, intelligible dialogue; and Hans Zimmer's derivative, repetitive score (seriously it was just the chord progression from the "Nimrod" section of Elgar's Enigma Variations, over and over and over again. And both won Oscars! What the actual fuck?)
More to the point, though: this is not exactly an undertold story — quite the opposite, in fact. It has already had (at least) two dramatizations that can be described as essential. Here's some information about one of them.
This was a major departure for Masterpiece Theatre at that time. Sadly, it doesn't seem to be available for streaming anywhere.
The other one can be streamed at the link below, although it may be blocked outside the U.S.
It's a definitive performance of this work, which is by John Adams and Peter Sellars; through July 28th only, it can also be streamed free of charge and, as far as I know, from anywhere in the world, here:
And finally, here are some things that you really ought to know about the subject matter, and which I gather are more-or-less completely ignored in the film:

I went to the Met Live HD Don Giovanni, and I was a little surprised by how much of the audience (in my cinema theatre) complained about the 'ugly' set design... do you think the general viewer just expects opera to have pretty costumes, regardless of plot content? I liked this production's lean into crime boss/Brutalist aesthetics
I think there’s definitely a contingent of opera fans who expect all productions to be pretty, regardless of content, yeah — I think in general there’s a divide between opera audiences who see opera as an extension of theater, with design elements that serve purposes beyond aesthetics, and opera audiences who just want to, like, encounter something grand, or think any decisions made in the design detract from the experience of the music

Saw the Magic Flute today on MET Live in HD. Prince Tamino and Princess Pamina on the top poster. Papageno showing Pamina a picture of Tamino on his cell phone in the lower picture.
And oh my gosh it was just fantastic. Amazing staging. It was all a knock out, even the singing with the expectations of the Met. It was Kathryn Lewek's 50th performance at the Met as The Queen of the Night and wow did it show. She came on for her bow and just the entire audience in New York just kind of snapped up in military fashion to give her a standing ovation.
If you like Mozart, Opera, The Magic Flute, or are just curious about any of that, there is an encore showing in movie theaters this Wednesday evening, June 7th 2023. Fathom events has a page to search for tickets near you.
I HIGHLY, highly recommend this one. They just knocked it out of the park. And the changes really make things stand out in a way that's great for discussion if you have seen it before.

1920s Film Resources
A European silent film called The Joyless Street, produced in the 1920s, gives me an idea of how the richer population lived compared to the poorer folk, and the everyday design styles featured within them. I have noticed many small household items or features that resemble Art Deco, as well as the fashion worn by the individuals and the interior design.
The film's leading actress, Greta Louisa Gustafson (Greta Garbo), was very influential in the 1920s and even considered an Art Deco icon because of her work and style. She was a leading actress in America and a prominent symbol of the design style from the decade. Greta started her career in Europe and is a  Swedish-American actress.

Movie Overview
A short film that features spiral designs that create the illusion of depth. It was created in 1926. Although it doesn’t relate very much to Art Deco and my topic, it still gives me a bit of insight into culture in the 1920s and artists from the period.
The work featured is by Rrose Sélavy, who is Marcel Duchamp’s alter ego.
Anémic cinéma
“Artworks by the fictitious Rrose Sélavy first appeared in 1920 and subsequently Duchamp used her as his feminine alter ego. Her name implies she is driven by erotic power; the antithesis of Duchamp’s cool, cerebral character. For this reason, Duchamp attributed certain works to her. Man Ray photographed Duchamp as Rrose on numerous occasions.”

EXTRA:
I found this film that looks perfect for what i want to explore and research but unfortunately it’s only available in July. I will still watch it if i remember just because of my own interest in Art Deco, but it would’ve been perfect for my project.
THE MET: LIVE IN HD RIGOLETTO
“Tony Award¬–winning director Bartlett Sher offers a bold new take on Verdi’s timeless tragedy, re-setting the opera’s action to 1920s Europe, with Art Deco sets by Michael Yeargan and elegant costumes by Catherine Zuber. Baritone Quinn Kelsey, a commanding artist at the height of his powers, brings his searing portrayal of the title role to the Met for the first time, starring alongside soprano Rosa Feola as Gilda and tenor Piotr Beczała as the Duke of Mantua, with leading maestro Daniele Rustioni on the podium. “

Rhiannon Giddens was on WNYC’s All of It with Alison Stewart to talk about and share songs from her new album, You’re the One. You can hear their conversation here.
This Saturday, Giddens—who won this year's Pulitzer Prize in Music for her opera Omar with Michael Abels and hosts the WQXR / Metropolitan Opera podcast Aria Code—will host The Met’s Live in HD broadcast of the opera Dead Man Walking, based on Sister Helen Prejean’s memoir. You can get tickets here.

so! der rosenkavalier!!!
Tumblr media
so first off, the elephant in the room: yes, there are some highly questionable elements of the plot that make me go “hmm! :/“ (to somewhat quote mean girls: “marie therese, step away from the underaged teenagers!”). for the purposes of not driving myself mad, i will try to refrain from discussing these for the remainder of the report.
anyway.
this music sings. this music delights. still not my fave strauss opera by any means but i would be lying if i wasn’t delighted. the presentation of the rose and the final trio and duet gave me full-body chills. i love the waltzes. so sugary sweet like the gelato i got after the show. there are so many golden little details in the score.
simone young did a great job imo—i’ve seen her get flak online about this run of performances but i don’t get it. she was great. the orchestra and chorus and many comprimarios were all fabulous.
it’s been a while since i’ve seen this production and it holds up really well!!! love the costumes and sets. LOVE them. not a fan of the wwi ending tho—just let octavian and sophie have their moment at long last 🥺 plus it doesn’t fit with the ending musically.
one other thing about the staging: i’m sure this was intentional but goddamn, a lot of the second act was UNCOMFORTABLE to watch, like make your skin crawl uncomfortable (and it did not help that several men in the audience at my theater were full-on laughing when ochs all but assaulted sophie all over that extended act ii sequence when he first shows up at faninal’s). god, baron ochs is such a fucking creep. and while i don’t like him as a person in the slightest, i have to hand it to günther groissböck for making ochs supremely unlikeable while still singing with strong command.
among the comprimarios and non-credited-in-the-intro people, special mention of alexandra lobianco (an excellent marianne) and tony stevenson (an absolute delight as the innkeeper in drag).
speaking of which, gotta say that even with them in new york and me in oklahoma, it was somehow comforting to see people in drag and same-sex kisses in this, given the political climate and the rising sentiments against drag and lgbtqia+ people. i thought about that a lot during the broadcast.
katharine goeldner and thomas ebenstein were HOOTS as annina and valzacchi. love them. rené barbera made the italian singer’s aria sound effortless (and looked GREAT in his white suit). brian mulligan did a great job as herr von faninal—i’d love to hear him in something italian though, his voice sounds made for italian rep.
and now for the three leading ladies, who were all divine both separately and together.
erin morley is one of my fave currently active sopranos right now and this sophie showed exactly why: voice like a dream, great actress, warm, intelligent, full of fire! i love her take on sophie so much. she GETS it. (and i may or may not have cheered when she slapped ochs in act ii.)
lise davidsen is another of my fave currently active sopranos right now (albeit a more recent discovery than erin morley) and her marschallin surprised me in a good way. what i remember most from her ariadne auf naxos hd last year was simply how stunningly powerful and beautiful and BIG her voice was, but this was equally amazing in a totally different way: she can rein it in too, baby! she can be so delicate and tender too and it just mesmerized me totally (and brought tears to my eyes a few times). and she made the part feel and look so natural! great singer and great actress? (and also gorg)—she’s the total package.
i was barely, if at all, familiar with samantha hankey before this but holy FUCK. she won my heart immediately. she is just a total delight and absolutely the real deal. that voice!!! it’s so creamy and beautiful and full of light!!! (and she can alter it at will too—her mariandel voice was SO different and so delightful). and she’s a totally natural actress, INCREDIBLY versatile and moving. octavian is a HUGE role and a VERY VARIED role and she totally fuckin nailed it and i want to see her in basically everything now. mark my words, y’all: she’s sensational. she’s gonna be the next big mezzo superstar.
anyway 10/10 plot weirdness inherent to the opera aside this is a definite recommend
edit: yes i was hoping to NOT have discourse about the plot but rereading this now i realize i may not have been clear about that in my choice of wording in the first few paragraphs. no hate to anyone who DID engage in discourse, that was my bad

This week’s “Man About Town” segment, for @News3LV, took an Italian turn. First, I regaled the ever-delightful @KrystalNews3LV with the deets about the special one-day-only encore screenings of @MetOpera’s brilliant and lively production of Giuseppe Verdi’s LA TRAVIATA, filmed live last November—featuring soprano @Nadine.Sierra as Violetta (a courtesan), tenor @SCostello929 as Alfredo (Violetta’s upper-class lover), and baritone @LucaBaritono as Germont (Alfredo’s disapproving father), with Maestro Daniele Callegari at the podium—that will be presented by @FathomEvents on Wednesday, February 15, in movie theaters, nationwide (as part of The Met’s “Live in HD” series); and the connection the famous opera has with some much-beloved contemporary films (think: MOULIN ROUGE and PRETTY WOMAN). Following this, we segued into the “Freddie’s Favorite Four” Menu that @PierosLasVegas is offering, from February 12-18, in honor of proprietor, Freddie Glusman’s 86th birthday. A four-course menu, featuring a number of Piero’s house favorites, for $86/person, this deliciousness is not to be missed. Ciao, y’all! Met Operas Is Entering Live Streaming, Targeting Far Fatched consumers
The Metropolitan Opera, after years of coopration with movie theaters around the world for opera broadcasting, decided to launch its livestreaming services directly to individual consumers. The Live at Home season will begin on October 22 with "Medea".
It is the latest effort by the company to reach as broad a public as possible. According to The New York Times, the Met's general manager Peter Gelb states that: "We wanted to make our live performances available to people who don't have ready access to the movie theaters that carry the Met." The live streaming service will only be available to some consumers in the United States, however, based on a specific calculation in their distance to movie theater that provide "Live in HD" series. The exact price will based on market and will varies from $10 to $20 for each opera avaible to be watched unlimited times during one week window. The porject will also be accessible to international audiences in another 170 countries.
As a cultural institution, The Met's experimenting with live streaming indicates the trends when in-person performances were curtailed. More netertainment sectors are entering vedio streaming industries while trying to maintain the maximum consumer for their main "battlefield". Rather than a shift in content delivery, The Met's transition is more like a flexible augmentation for its move theater experience.
