Presidential historian says she's 'concerned' transfer of power 'may not...
Grrrrr.... I HATE that we do this with news and information. It’s so disingenuous. That’s really NOT what she’s saying at all.
The actual exchange:
Doris Kearns Goodwin: “It just makes you so proud of each one of those candidates, who’d been through an election, they lost it, they let down their constituents - and they were able to make that transfer of power. And it’s a central part of our democracy. That has to happen this next November.”
Kristen Welker: “As we sit here today, how concerned are you that it may not happen?”
Doris Kearns Goodwin: “I am concerned that it may not happen but I somehow think if the majority of the people come out who have different values from that and they vote - voting is absolutely essential, it’s the premium value as Lyndon Johnson said. It’s the one thing that all the rest of our democracy depends on. That’s democracy. And what IS democracy? You throw a candidate out or you call them in. You either want him to come in or you want him thrown out. We have to be able to do that. And I think if the majority comes out to vote - the majority never out in enough numbers to vote. Not only young people. They’ve made a big difference in 2020, 2018, 2022. And they’re saying now they may not vote if they’re not happy with either candidate. Again: If they only could know what we felt like in the sixties when we felt we were making a difference. You feel larger. You feel a sense of exhilaration - the word you used earlier - and I just hope they feel that this election could turn on them. And the uncommitted people and the undecided people have to come out and vote. And we have to just take the results of the election. That doesn’t mean we know how it’s going to happen. But if the overwhelming majority vote, then somehow maybe it won’t be as close as we think it is going to be. And then we’ll have a clear cut choice.”
That’s not 'I’m concerned the transfer of power may not happen.' That’s’ we need everyone to come out to vote because that’s what ensures the process works.’
She’s saying voting matters. She’s saying participation matters. She’s saying democracy matters. She’s saying that it’s us. Not that she’s afraid of some power grab or the end of our republic.
But the news needs the clicks. Just... ... wargarble!!

Can Architecture Imprison Your Mind? [SciFi]
I think this was both more and less interesting than I thought it would be.
Definitely thought provoking.
I feel like there is a LOT of meat on her argument about efficiency. In some ways, I’m not sure that efficiency isn’t actually THE underlying argument for prisons. That it is simply more efficient for the state to imprison people who they don’t want in society but need for their labor than it is to have a cared for laborer.
Which kinda makes me want to agree on her favorite, simply because I think that prison is the depiction that makes it the clearest WHY the prison exists at all, not merely WHY it is laid out the way it is. As much as I love sci-fi and sci-fi prisons and all of it, there is a critique to be made that they’re/we’re too subtle.
I gotta put we, since I was totally caught being too subtle today in my critique group. Oh! The prisoners are being incinerated? Totally missed that. >_< Yeah. Too “clever” for my own good sometimes. So, I say it in sympathy more than accusation.
I love her breakdown of Cube. I think it actually gives me some insight that I think is completely missing from the movie for me, even liking the movie. WHY the cube exists as it exists is extremely unclear. The story makes sense in the context of the cube but the cube itself is contextually silent. There are only possible interpretations.
And I think that somewhat goes all the way back to her oldest listed story of The Demolished Man. The societal reason for Demolition is pretty clear. Why the main character is the person to best showcase Demolition is much less so. It ends up feeling like Demolition itself is somewhat muddled. Especially since we never really see the final result. Unless I was peeping the wrong bit. It’s possible. I have to admit Bester is hard for me. I think Babylon 5′s episode “Passing Through Gethsemane” actually managed to do a significantly better job of it just since it manages to show the switch over so well. If there was a way to combine the two, that would probably be the ideal. Maybe. I dunno. But there is very frequently this question of WHY this arrangement. Even this far back.
The new serialized Star Wars, for me, is the only one I know of that never provokes the question - again, for me. Whether it is in Andor or Even when it is identified as rehabilitation instead of prison in The Mandalorian when they show what’s happening to Dr. Pershing. It’s very clear to me why things are set up the way they are and why the particular people having the experiences are the ones  chosen as the representatives to be having them.
So... it’s all good food for thought. Feels like a good companion video for The New Jim Crow for anyone who wants to write topical sci-fi.

It's incredible how people have been protesting pants and skirts not having pockets but not a single peep is heard over the fact that skirts no longer have underskirts by default. Underskirts (or lining) was a thing when I was a child, no skirt would be made without lining, you didn't have to think and check if your whole ass is visible in a skirt because lining was a thing!!!! Now most skirts don't and it's simply because it's cheaper, fuck the fact that a customer doesn't want their panties shown in broad daylight, it saves a couple of cents on material.
