Byler Week, Day 1: Halloween
Happy Halloween to those who celebrate! (Happy s2 Byler to all) And happy first day of Bylerweek!
Today is Day 1: Halloween / AU / –gate. I chose to write a fic bc my drawing skills need serious brushing up skills and I can eventually stuff this fic into my other fic’s universe😌.
Edit: Also posted to Ao3:)
Halloween used to be Mike’s favorite holiday. He’s always loved dressing up as whatever his favorite character that year is. And he loves seeing what other people dress up as.
One year, before the Party started doing group costumes, he and Will had gone as Kirk and Spock. He’d even made the ultimate sacrifice and let Will be Kirk.
Tiny little seven-year-old Will had made an adorable Starship Captain (equally tiny Mike had thought he looked super cool). Mike’s fake ears had itched, but he’d liked the cool blue color of his shirt. And everyone that gave them candy that night had known they were a pair, which had thrilled them both to pieces.
The first year that the Party did group costumes, Mike and Dustin had convinced the other two to go as DC superheroes (Lucas and Will have always preferred Marvel). Lucas had been Green Arrow, and Dustin had picked the Flash (his favorite). Everyone had expected Mike to go as Superman, who was his all-time favorite. Except he’d gone as Batman instead and asked Will to be Superman. Everyone’s costumes had turned out great, but Mike’s favorite had absolutely been Will’s—handmade by Mrs. Byers as always.
(It seems obvious in retrospect, that Mike had already begun to get a crush on Will—which is why he’d wanted him to be Superman.)
(And then, of course, the Halloween—only a few days before Will would be taken by Vecna, the Party had dressed up as Star Wars characters. This time it’d been easy to convince everyone that Will as Luke was just the obvious, correct choice, and not because Luke was obviously the best character.)
But Eighth grade had been the last time any of them had dressed up (“Who you gonna call?”) —and it hadn’t exactly ended well.
(Well, technically that Halloween had ended with Mike and Will hanging out alone in the basement, watching a lighthearted movie and sitting close together to feel safer—so that part…)
Freshman year, Mike had been in the middle of being miserable and missing Will and El too much to even think about a costume—and last year, they’d been in the middle of recovering from an apocalypse (neither Will, nor Max, had even been awake yet).
So now there are multiple anniversaries right around Halloween that seem much more prevalent than going around getting candy (which they’re pretty much too old for anyway, in Mike’s unhappy opinion), or going to a Halloween party—with too many people they’re not friends with, and alcohol, which none of the Party even likes.
So yeah, Mike doesn’t really intend to broach the subject of costumes this year.
Instead it’s Will who brings it up. “If all I have to focus on this year are the shitty memories and handing out candy, I’m going to scream.” Then he grins, a little mischievous. “Plus this is the first Halloween that we’re dating. I’ll be able to tell you this time that I think you look handsome in your costume, instead of pretending that you, as Han Solo, didn't fluster me half to death.”
Mike, they’ve both learned, is much easier to tease out of the two of them—Will makes a game sometimes, out of all the easy ways he can make Mike blush. Like right now.
“You’re mean,” he grumbles, hiding his suddenly warm face in his hands. It only gets warmer at Will’s delighted laugh. “You wanna do a group costume with the Party, or a pair like we used to?”
“The Party’s a lot bigger than it was back then—it’d be too hard to coordinate on short notice. But…” Will trails off. Mike risks a look at Will, who is suddenly much closer, smile softened but eyes still bright with mirth. “I think, Michael, that in this context, it’d be a couple’s costume, not just a pair.”
Mike resists the urge to hide his face again.
“Everyone always thinks I’m the mean one of the two of us,” he grumbles, but accepts the embrace Will is silently, cheerfully, offering—nosing into the other boy’s shoulder. “I’m gonna tell your mom you were bullying me. She loves me, you’ll get in trouble.”
“Tattletale,” Will singsongs. “I’ll stop bullying you if you let me pick our costumes this year.”
Mike, who doesn’t actually want Will to ever stop bullying (aggressively flirting with) him, cocks his head. “Alright Byers, deal.” He pauses. “And you just have to lay off flustering me in front of our friends—they already think I’d let you get away with anything.”
Will snickers. “You know what? Deal. But, for the record, I think you would let me get away with anything. Which is why, one day, you’ll go with me and El to Vegas so we can use our powers to scam the slot—”
Mike interrupts this long-running (hopefully a) joke to kiss Will. Will leans into it briefly, reaching up to weave a hand into Mike’s hair. After a moment, though, he pulls back, looking thoughtful.
“Now we have to figure out what we’re doing for Halloween.”
The Halloween of Mike and Will’s Junior year of high school, the Extended Party (minus Jonathan and Nancy, away at their colleges) convene on the Byers-Hopper house, dressed to the nines in their Halloween costumes. The plan is to watch minorly scary movies, eat far too much junk, and take turns answering the door for Trick-or-Treaters.
The Original Members of the Party (including Max) show up early to help set up.
Dustin is in a full suit and tie, a gun holster (with two full water guns in it), and a fedora. The entire setup is impressive, but none of his friends can guess who he’s supposed to be. The only one who understands who his character is immediately, is—oddly—Hopper.
“Elliot Ness.”
“Yes! Thank you!!”
It turns out that, having recently seen the Untouchables, Dustin had gone on a research spree about the Real-life man, and been fascinated. Thus, his choice of costume.
Lucas and Max have decided against couple costumes. Instead, Max wanted to go as Wonder Woman, so she has (and she looks every bit the Amazon warrior, sitting in her wheelchair like it’s a throne).
Lucas, on the other hand, has finally been able to be a Marvel superhero. After long deliberation between all of his favorites, he’d finally settled on Falcon—partly because he enjoyed the recent comics miniseries, but also because if he’d gone as Spider-Man (his other big choice), he’d have to keep removing the mask to eat.
“Falcon is just cool enough to date Wonder Woman,” Max tells him, mock-loftily.
He laughs, leaning across her lap to give her a kiss. “Well, Wonder Woman is more than cool enough to date Falcon.”
This being one of El’s first actual Halloweens’, she chose to go as the ghost she’d wanted to go as on her first Halloween—though the simple sheet had been switched for a white dress, pale makeup, and fake blood (with the occasional appearance of actual blood when she used her powers to get another soda, or pop Mike across the head with a pillow).
Steve and his group seem to have collectively decided to go as the Breakfast Club (or perhaps Steve is in regular clothes, it’s hard to tell). Robin, dressed as the outcast girl, is lounging across Vickie’s (dressed as Molly Ringwald’s character) lap, attempting to toss popcorn into Steve’s mouth. She’s largely just making a mess, but neither of them seem to care.
The (actual) adults of the bunch settle in the kitchen. Joyce convinced Hopper to do a couple’s costume with her (they’ve gone as Frankenstein and the Bride of Frankenstein), but Murray shows up wielding a bottle of something very strong for them to drink and wearing just a dollar store cape over his regular clothes.
(Erica, out with her other friends for one last candy-haul before high school next year, will come at eight-thirty. She’s dressed up as her DnD character, Lady Applejack. She has no plans whatsoever to share her candy—even though she knows she probably will end up doing so.)
Joyce had been overjoyed to see what costumes Mike and Will picked this year.
She hadn’t been the only one.
When Will told Mike what costumes he wanted, Mike almost cried. He is (not so) secretly a sap, and Will knows it (though Will isn’t much better on that front, honestly).
“Shall we, Mr. Spock?”
“Indeed we shall, Captain Kirk.”
It’s the best Halloween yet, in their opinions.

Halloween [Steve Harrington]

“What’re we going to be for Halloween this year?” I asked, rummaging through Steve’s closet. He laid on his bed, staring at the ceiling. He chuckled and sat up on his elbows to look at me.
“Are we going anywhere? You know I’m not big on Halloween parties.” He said. I turned to look at him. He had a hint of sadness in his eyes, remembering that Halloween party from three years ago.
“I wanted to dress up to hand out candy. The kids made it very clear they’re old enough to trick or treat alone this year.” I said, rubbing my arm and looking at the floor. It kind of hurt that I had just been accepted by the group of kids Steve called friends and they didn’t want us around at Halloween. Steve sat up in bed and pulled his legs up, crossing them.
“We can dress up if you want.” He said softly. “You’re really going to miss those little shits, huh?”
“It’s just...they seemed to finally be okay with us dating, and now they don’t want me around on Halloween.” I said. Steve stood up and hugged me.
“Hey, they still like you. They’re just older now, they think they’ve got it all figured out.” He said, rubbing my back.
“I guess.” I sighed into his chest. “So...costumes?”
“I don’t know. Can I just be a 19 year old kid?” He said, smiling. I rolled my eyes and turned back to his closet.
“If you want to be a Halloween party pooper, than sure.” I said. I reached to the back of his closet and pulled out an old baseball jersey that belonged to Steve when he played varsity for a few years.
“I could wear this.” I said, taking it off the hanger and putting my arms in it. It barely buttoned over my chest, so I left it open and turned back to Steve. He was standing there, blush slowly filling his cheeks. He shuffled in place a little bit. “And a hat, and I could just wear shorts, and put some black paint under my eyes...” I continued, walking over to Steve’s dresser and putting on one of his baseball hats. He said nothing, and just continued to watch me plan a costume. “What?” I finally made eye contact with him. Steve had a small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. He stepped towards me and pulled me into a tight hug.
“I haven’t worn that in a long, long time.” He mumbled, kissing the top of my head. “And it looks adorable on you.”
“Steve...” I started, feeling my face grow warm. He smiled at me and looked towards his closet.
“Okay, so what should I be?” He said, rifling through the hangers and boxes. He started laughing slightly as he pulled something out of a box. He held up his ripped and stained Scoops Ahoy uniform.
“I could be a zombie ice cream man.” He said, smiling. I smiled back at him.
“You kept that thing?” I asked. He looked down at the uniform, running his fingers over the ripped seams.
“Yeah...I figured it’d be a great story for the grand kids someday.” He said. It was my turn to envelope him in my arms and hug him.
“Why don’t we go buy costumes?” I asked. He pulled away from me and nodded. We hopped in the car and went down to the store, where we browsed through the costumes together.
“I want this.” He said, pulling one off the rack. I looked over at him as he held up a vampire cape and shirt.
“A vampire?” I asked, raising an eyebrow at him.
“Uh, yeah.” He said, looking at me like I was the silly one. “Vampires are cool. They live forever, sleep all day, and can seduce pretty ladies.”
“Well okay then.” I said, turning back to the rack. “So should I be this one?” I pulled a bride of Frankenstein costume out. Steve smiled and nodded.
“We’re going to be so scary. The kids are going to flip when they come over to get candy.” Steve said. We paid for our costumes and a few days later, we dressed up and waited patiently for kids to start arriving. I had convinced Steve to let me slick his hair and put a little eyeliner on him to top his costume off. I had teased my hair up extra big and put on light powder and dark eyeliner. We looked great.
It was a few minutes of sitting in front of the TV before we heard several fists knock on the door. Steve got up and grabbed the bowl of candy, and I got up and followed him.
“Trick or- Wow! You guys look great!” Dustin said, looking at both of us as Steve opened the door. We smiled as Steve dropped candy into their bags. They were all dressed as Star Wars characters, with Max and El both being Leia and a mix of Han Solos and Luke Skywalkers for the boys. I could hear the arguing in the back of my mind that must have happened when they were all meeting up and yelling about duplicate costumes.
“You guys look good too.” I said. Steve smiled at me as he put the bowl of candy down. The kids came in with heavy bags. “How long have you been trick or treating?” I asked, gesturing to the bags.
“We saved your house for last.” Mike said. “We wanted to stop here and watch some Halloween movies on TV.”
Steve came up behind me and put his arm around me. I smiled at him, his goofy eyeliner and hair making me chuckle. The kids piled into the living room, changing the channel to what they wanted to watch.
“See? They wanted to hang out with us.” Steve said. I looked at him and still couldn’t take him seriously. I giggled at him as he whipped his cape behind him.
“Don’t laugh at me!” He said. “I’m a powerful vampire. I can seduce you.”
“Okay, cool it, Dracula.” I said, turning back towards the kids in the living room. Steve stomped after me and we curled up on the floor, holding each other until I dozed off on Steve’s shoulder. I woke up when the kids were all getting picked up by Johnathan and Nancy, and I groggily said goodbye to them as they filed out, raging on sugar highs.
“Great, now we have to wash this stuff off.” Steve said, gesturing to his face.
“It’s eyeliner, Steve, you’ll be okay.” I said.
“But think of the retraining I’ll have to do for my hair!” He said as we walked up the steps. “Again, I think you’ll be okay.” I said, pressing a quick kiss to his lips before he went into the bathroom, sighing at his hair and eyes. “Next year, we’re dressing up as people who are alive!”

Glad to see u writing again!!! just wanna say if you ever get the urge to write 198X again there is at least one bitch left out here who will read tf out of it. Fandom’s dead but god it deserves a revival.
Sam sat alone in the living room. Amanda had moved all of them into her house almost a year ago. It was a month until Halloween and this would be Cas’ first proper Halloween. Their dad hated Halloween, wouldn’t let them trick or treat, wouldn't hand out candy, Sam didn’t even know how to properly celebrate.
“Sammy?” A quiet voice came from the doorway. Sam shifted in his seat and held out his arms. Within seconds his arms were full of a shaky Lucy.
“Hey princess, what’s going on?”
“Had a nightmare,” Lucy curled further into his arms. Sam rubbed her back and let it go. It hadn’t happened often but all the kids occasionally had nightmares, usually as a direct result of their childhood.
“Are you excited for Halloween,” Sam asked quietly as he leaned back on the couch.
“Mhm,” Lucy sniffled a little before looking up at him. “Mike said this year we could get real costumes!”
“That’s going to be so much fun,” Sam said. He sat there and thought about what they all could go as.
“I was thinking maybe we could go as the Star Wars characters,” Lucy rubbed her eyes and sat up to look at him. “I could be Princess Leia, Matty could be Luke. Maybe Sophie could be r2d2?”
“That’s a great idea!” Sam said, smiling down at her. “You know, Cas and I have never gone trick or treating.”
“Really? You have to go as Obi-Wan then!” Lucy looked thrilled.
“I like it, how about we go and get a cup of cocoa and then get you back to bed.” Sam stood up and held Lucy on his hip. After almost a year of getting constant good food she and Matt had grown quite a bit, but Sam could still carry them around.
“I’d like that.” Lucy curled her arms around his neck and closed her eyes. Sam set her down at the table and set to work making cocoa. Once he was halfway through he realized she had fallen asleep at the table. He quickly turned off the burner under the milk, walking over to the table and scooping her up again.
“Mmm,” she groaned when he picked her up.
“Shhh Luce, go back to sleep.”
“I’m so glad you’re my brother,” Lucy muttered before slipping back to sleep. Sam smiled down at her, before carrying her into her bedroom and tucking her into her bed. He paused in the doorway for a moment, just watching her and thinking about what she said.
He returned to the kitchen and cleaned up the cocoa before walking upstairs to his partners’ room. He crawled into the side of the bed, wrapping himself around Hannah. He lay there for only a few minutes before he drifted off to sleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Sammy!! Wake up!!” He jerked awake to the feeling of the bed bouncing. He sat up and reached out, snatching Lucy and Matt mid bounce and pulling them into a hug.
“Sammy! It’s breakfast time!!” Lucy squirmed in his arms before breaking away and running to the door. Matt was hot on her heels only pausing at the door to make sure Sam was getting up.
“We’ve spoiled them,” Sam said with a small smile. He hauled himself out of bed and realized he was the only one in there. He made his way downstairs, only to be immediately handed Sophie as he stepped off the stairs.
“Good morning Sam,” Mike said from the table, where plates of pancakes were sitting.
“Morning,” Sam day down at his normal seat, situating the squirmy toddler in his arms.
“So, Lucy’s been telling us about your great idea for Halloween,” Amanda said, pouring a cup of coffee for him.
“Yeah! I can’t wait to be Luke Skywalker!” Matt jumped up in his chair and began making the lightsaber noises as he swung around his fork.
“I thought maybe I could be Han,” Cas said, studying him for a second.
“I think that’s perfect!” Sam said, giving Sophie a bite of pancake.
“Yeah, Sophie can be R2, Mike can be Chewbacca,” Lucy said with a mouth full of food.
“And we can be rebel pilots,” Amanda said, pointing at Hannah.
“Alright, we have a month to pull this off,” Sam said, draining his coffee cup. “Amanda do we have a sewing machine?”
“Yeah, it’s right up in the attic. Oh, and I know the perfect fabric store. Let me know what you’ll need and I can go get it tonight.”
“Perfect,” Sam smiled at his little family. “This is going to be the best Halloween ever.”
They finished their meal, finalizing plans for the holiday. Sam knew these costumes wouldn’t be perfect, be he planned to do what he could.
“Ok,” Hannah stood up and clapped her hands together. “Lucy and Matt, you two clear the table, Amanda you and I can handle washing up. Mike, can you get started on Sophie’s costume?”
“Of course dear,” Mike said, scooping Sophie out of Sam’s arms. “Come on little one, let’s go find the best little box to turn into R2.”
“Aright, Cas you come up with me now, Lucy and Matt when you’re done clearing the table come up to the attic.”
Sam and Cas stood up and headed up to the attic. Sam poked around for a few minutes until he found a tape measure, a pad of paper, and a set of pencils.
“Ok, so you want to be Han. Pair of black pants, whiteish tan shirt, and a black vest. We’ll need to figure out what to do about the belt and gun.”
“Leave that to me and Mike,” Cas said.
“Yeah I can do that,” Sam beckoned her over and started taking her measurements. “I’ll make the practical clothes and you and Mike can work on the props.”
Sam started sketching out a few designs of Cas’ costume. He added in her measurements and grinned.
“You’re all going to look amazing,” Sam started writing out a list of the different fabrics he was going to need.
“Don’t forget you still have homework you need to do,” Cas said before she descended down the stairs to the main levels. Sam turned to sketch out Leia’s costume. Before he knew it Hannah, Mike, and Amanda were standing over him.
“Hey what’s up?” Sam asked, looking up from the finalized sketches.
“It’s time for dinner,” Hannah said. “You’ve been up here all day.”
“Have I?” Sam stretched out his back before standing up. As soon as he stood up his vision went black and he stumbled forward. Amanda caught him immediately, propping him up on her shoulder.
“Are you ok?” Hannah asked, standing in front of him.
“Based on my lack of vision I’m going to say no.” Sam frantically blinked his eyes.
“You need food and water,” Mike said, scooping him up and carrying him down the stairs.
“I think I got a little carried away,” Sam said, wrapping his arms around Mike’s neck. “You know I did this exact thing with Lucy last night. But I guess she could see. Oh shit, it’s coming back.”
By the time they made it downstairs, Sam could see again. He was unceremoniously dropped down into a recliner in the living room.
“Bitch!” Sam said, squirming around in the seat to get comfortable.
“Stay here, we’re going to get you your food ok?” Sam stuck his tongue out at Hannah before leaning back in the chair.
“You know, Halloween isn’t for a month. You don’t need to finish the costumes tonight.” Cas said from her seat on the couch.
“I may have gotten a little carried away,” Sam admitted rubbing his neck. He winced as he realized just how tense his back was.
“Scoot forward idiot,” Cas moved to behind him where she could get some of the knots out of his back. Sam leaned forward gratefully, relaxing more every second.
“We’re going to make everything perfect Sammy,” Cas said. “Don’t even worry about it. And no more full day binges.”
“You have a deal,” Sam spun around and tickled her sides. She screeched and frantically threw herself off of the chair and onto the couch.
“Bitch!” She said between laughter.
“You bitch!” Sam said back, leaning against the back of the chair and smiled at her with more fondness than he knew he had.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Over the next four weeks, they all worked together to make the costumes perfect. Mike worked with Hannah to make all the props, Amanda and Sam took turns on the sewing machine, making the actual costumes.
“Alright!” Sam called as he walked down the stairs, already dressed in his own costume. “It’s almost time to trick or treat! Come get your costume.”
Immediately he heard them running towards him. He took two steps back and prepared to hand them their costumes. Lucy landed at the bottom of the stairs first, followed by Matt. Cas came down a little slower while holding Sophie.
“Lucy, here’s yours. Here you go, Matt!” Sam handed them both their costumes and turned to Cas. “I’ll trade you. Costume for the baby.”
Cas grinned at him and handed him Sophie before taking her Han Solo costume. She turned and ran off to her own room to change.
“Are you ready to get into your costume Soph?” He tickled her stomach and walked towards the garage. Out there they had a red wagon with a cardboard box in the shape of R2D2. There was a mini high chair inside so she could sit inside comfortably.
Mike had included several kinds of toys inside the costume so she wouldn’t get too bored, but whenever she did one of the older kids would start carrying her around. He got her all situated in the seat and then wheeled her out to the front yard where everyone else was gathered.
Mike was dressed up as Chewbacca and standing between two rebel pilots. In front of them Leia, Luke, and Han stood arm in arm, with their baskets sitting in front of them.
“Group picture time!” Cas called, holding out Mike’s camera. Sam pulled Sophie to sit in front of them before taking the camera and standing in front of them.
“Ok group together! I’m going to take a picture of all of you then Mike will take one with me in it.” Sam said, moving towards the porch to take the picture.
As Sam looked through the viewfinder he found himself overcome with joy and great fullness as he saw his little family. He had never regretted leaving his shitty house, but right now, he was over the moon with happiness that they had left.
“Say Happy Halloween!”
“Happy Halloween!” They all cheered.

1983
“Mom.”
“Just one more picture!”
“Mom!”
Mike stood embarrassedly at the stairs, sighing at the multiple pictures his mom was taking of him. “My friends are gonna be here soon, can I go now?”
“Alright. But when they all get here I expect to have a group picture of all you guys in your costumes.”
“Mom, no.”
“Mike, yes. You look so cute in your...” Waving her hand around, Karen tried to remember the name of who her son was dressed up as.
“Han Solo isn’t cute!” Mike said exasperatedly. “He’s a scoundrel! A smuggler!”
“Still cute.” Pinching his cheeks, Karen walked into the kitchen, admiring her polaroids of her son.
Jogging down the stairs to the basement, Mike looked in the mirror at himself. Tonight was the night. The night Return Of The Jedi came out in theatres. It was something they all had planned months before.
Dustin was going to come dressed as Chewbacca, Lucas as Lando Calrissian, Will as Luke Skywalker, and Y/N, being the only girl of the group (so far), as the one and only Princess Leia.
“It’s the perfect thing Mike!” Lucas grinned. “You like Y/N and she’s going as Leia and you’re going as Han!”
“Yeah! Tell her you like her when we go to the movies! It’s perfect!” Dustin had added.
“Mike! Open the door! You in there?”
“Son of a bitch, is he really gonna make us walk all the way to the front?”
Rolling his eyes, Mike opened the back door for his friends.
“Heyyy! Han!” Will grinned, brandishing a lightsaber Lucas flourished his cape while Dustin roared like Chewie.
“Chewie! Lando! Luke! Where’s Y/N?” Mike asked seemingly nonchalant, stepping aside to let them walk by.
“She’s not here? We called earlier to see if she wanted to come along with us to your house but she didn’t answer so we thought she was here already.” Dustin shrugged.
The doorbell rang, just as Dustin finished. Standing and staring at each other for a split second, they burst into movement, running up the stairs.
“Oh good! Everyone’s here! Come on, let’s take at least one picture with the all of you together.” Karen hustled Dustin, Lucas and Will together, organizing them for a picture.
Mike swallowed, his mom moving aside to reveal Y/N, dolled up in her white Leia dress and buns, complete with pink blush and eyeshadow.
“Hey Han.” Y/N grinned and Mike flushed.
“H-Hey Leia. You’re costume is really nice.” Mike blurted out.
“Thanks.” Y/N smiled, pleased. “Shall we?”
“I want an ewok.”
“That’s the first thing that comes out of your mouth when you walk out of Star Wars?” Will giggled.
“Yes! They’re so cute they’re like big teddy bears!” Y/N gushed.
“What’s more important is Han and Leia!” Lucas winked at Mike who’s eyes grew wide, shaking his head, panicked.
“Um, I’m gonna go throw my garbage away. Does anyone have any?” Mike mumbled, grabbing the group’s trash and walking to throw it out.
“You forgot something.”
Startled, Mike looked up, face to face with Y/N who held a napkin with a smile, tossing it into the trash.
“Y/N?” Mike said quietly as they walked back to the others.
“Yeah?”
“I love you.”
A few moments passed before a smile bloomed on Y/N’s face.
“I know.”
Bonus:
“You pulled an actual Han and Leia? Dude! And she said it back?”
“Guys.. Quit making a big deal!”
“That’s how you tell a girl you like her!”
