Harry immediately texted you after Gemma showed him the Field Day note, demanding that he be put down as a volunteer.
You laughed at the text, images of an overly excited Harry bouncing throughout your head when you read it. You assured him that he would be first on the list as her class helper. Ten minutes later Harry’s face lit up your phone screen as he called you. An amused smile curved your lips as you answered, “Hello?”
“I’m annoyed.” he instantly huffed.
Your immediate reaction was to laugh but you held it together, “Why are you annoyed?”
“Gemma wants to volunteer too.” he grumbled.
The pout was evident in his tone and you couldn’t help but giggle. “You’re annoyed that Gemma wants to volunteer for her son’s class?” you asked.
“Well…no. It’s not just Gemma.” he sighed, rubbing his chin.
“Who else?” you inquired.
“Brad and Lloyd too. They are all magically free this Wednesday.”
“Well that’s lovely! The more help the better!” you cheerfully replied.
His response could only be described as a five year old throwing a tantrum. “But I don’t wanna share!”
You laughed, much to his dismay. It caused him to pout even more and sigh. “That's just more people you have to give your attention to, that isn’t me. And I don’t want my sister and friends to interfere with that.”
It was adorable honestly that he wanted all of your attention. And you knew it was killing him that he had to wait till the end of the school year to officially get all of it. If you had it your way, you’d throw all caution to the wind and give it to him. It was hard to resist those big green eyes that held so much warmth and care.
“Harry, have I ever told you how adorable you are?” you asked, feeling an insane amount of endearment for him.
Harry’s mood drastically shifted from annoyed to shy, “Well… no…” he answered with a soft giggle. His cheeks were the brightest red from blushing, unable to stop himself from smiling.
“Well, you are. I adore that you want all of my attention and I want you to know that if I could then I would give it all to you without a second thought. In only a few short months you’ll have my full undivided attention. So much of it that you’ll get sick of it. I’m so excited to meet you other friends. I know the class will have a blast with all of you. And don’t worry, you’ll still be first on my list.” you couldn’t help but tease him a little bit. He was fun to tease and it was only fair since he enjoyed teasing you too.
“Good” he softly said with a big smile.
“Do you feel better now?” The softness of your voice helped further soothe him. Harry knew he could be a bit…much to handle sometimes. His Mom always encouraged him to express himself and sometimes he had some big feelings to express that some people can’t handle.
He nodded even though you couldn’t see him, “Yeah, I’m sorry.”
“For what?” you asked, confused as to why he was apologizing.
“Oh, um…for getting jealous like that. It’s not really my place to get that way.” he explained, swallowing nervously.
Smiling sweetly at him, you couldn’t help but shake your head, “It’s okay Harry. Seriously. I’ll see you on Wednesday okay?” you reassuringly said.
“Of course. Have a good night Honey.”
“You too Harry.”

When the day came, the school was buzzing with activity. There was a giant blow up water slide in the field, obstacle course games were being set up, teachers and staff were moving about to make sure everything was getting ready.
Volunteers began to show up as kids were being dropped off, going to their kid’s classroom to get the day's instructions from the teacher. Harry, along with Gemma, and his brothers all walked in with Arlo who was excited to show off his cool drawings and play games all day with his friends.
“Welcome in you guys!” You greeted, walking up to the group. Harry smiled at you and pulled you in for a hug and a sneaky kiss to your cheek.
“Good morning.” he whispered, about melting into you when you hugged him back.
“Good morning Mr.Honey.” you whispered back. You hadn’t mentioned the name to Harry since he had lunch with you but judging by the giggle he gave in response and the blush on his cheeks, he loved the way it sounded on your lips.
“Harry, are you gonna introduce us?” Brad asked, one hand resting on his hip in a sassy stance and holding a starbucks cup.
Rolling his eyes, Harry turned so you were tucked into his side, his arm resting around your shoulder. “Honey, this is Brad.” he motioned to the tall, built man that had just spoken. “And this is Lloyd.” gesturing to the equally as tall man next to him.
“It’s so nice to finally meet you two! I’ve heard great things about you both.” Giving them a small wave and a smile.
Brad smiled at Harry, then back to you, “Oh, we’ve heard great things about you too.” He said, earning an elbow to the ribs from Lloyd, “OW!” he yelped, glaring over at his best friend.
Lloyd rolled his eyes, shaking his head and gave you a warm smile as well, “Sorry about him. We usually leave him in the car.”
Brad gave him a faux dumbfounded look, making you laugh. “No worries. You guys are actually my only volunteers today. There’s only seven kids in here so don’t worry I’m not going to overwhelm you.”
They all nodded, seemingly happy with the idea of having the class to themselves for the day.
“They’re letting two classes at a time outside so it’s not as overwhelming. I’ll need you all to help make sure everyone’s on their best behavior, having fun, and keep the stations functionable for the next group that will come after us.” they all nodded once more and mumbled their agreement of understanding.
While your class waited to go outside, you turned off the lights and put on a disney movie for the kids to watch. Looking around the room, you noticed to much of your amusement you saw Harry, Gemma, Brad, and Lloyd just as entranced by the movie as the kids were. Pulling your phone out of your purse you sneakily took a photo to send to Harry later. They looked like they fit right in with your kids and you knew today was going to be fun.
By time the movie was over it was time to line up and go outside. The kids were bouncing in their assigned line spots, chattering about what they were gonna do first when they got outside. The moment you pushed open the door that led to the field they all took off running, eager to join the other class outside.
You watched in pure amusement as Gemma, Brad, and Lloyd also took off to have fun as well. Harry hung back with you though, hanging out in the shade. “You gonna join the fun?” you asked, looking over at him.
He shrugged, looking over to you, “I will in a minute. I want to watch my friends get jumped by a bunch of five year olds.” he smirked.
You laughed, shaking your head, “That’s evil.”
“I like to call it karma for our younger years.” bumping his shoulder with your own, he made his way over to a bucket of water balloons, handing them out to kids.
You stood there and admired him, watching how he effortlessly charmed the kids he interacted with. Even the shyest of kids seemed drawn to him. You understood why though. Harry just had this safe feeling about him.
Making your way across the field to the water slide, you helped students off of it, cheering them on when they would slide down. Looking to your left, you noticed a nervous Gemma standing at the end of the slide, looking up. Following her line of vision, you saw Arlo climbing up the slide. “You okay there?” you asked her.
Not looking away from her son, she nodded. “He hates heights. He’s never liked being up high. He wouldn’t stop whining about going down the slide though.” her voice wavered some as she ranted.
“He’ll be okay Gemma.” you tried to assure her.
Arlo reached the top of the slide, crawling on his knees to the edge he would slide down then froze. The height of the slide had been horribly miscalculated in his head. The drop was a lot longer than it had looked from the ground.
You watched as he froze and began to back away from the edge till his back was pressed against the nylon material. “Uh, oh…” you muttered.
“Arlo!” Gemma nervously called up to him. “You’ve gotta come down Bub!” she forced a smile to try and hide how terrified she was. There was only one way down from this slide and she didn’t know what she was going to do if Arlo didn’t eventually come down.
Arlo shook his head, curling in on himself some as his classmates shook the slide going down it, scaring him further.
Noticing the situation escalating, you moved around the slide, stopping more students from climbing up and redirecting them to other activities, “When our friend comes down I’ll let you guys slide some more.” you said guiding them away.
Harry had noticed the redirection from across the field and jogged over to Gemma, “Hey, what’s going on?” he asked.
“Arlo’s at the top of the slide and won’t come down.” Gemma rushed to say, her chest heaving some in slight panic.
Placing a calming hand on Gemma’s shoulder, he squeezed it, “I’ll go up and get him.” he said, making his way around to you. “I’m here to retrieve the child.” he said, saluting you.
Shaking your head, you stepped aside, “Good luck!” you called to him as he ascended up the ladder.
When Harry got to the top of the slide, he smiled at Arlo who was tucked into a corner, “Hey Bub. You okay?” he asked, scooting over to him.
Arlo shook his head, refusing to meet Harry’s eyes.
“Hey, look at me.” he gently instructed.
It took him a few minutes but Arlo eventually looked up to Harry, his brown eyes big with fear.
“I’m not going to let anything bad happen to you. I know it’s scary but we have to go down the slide. Do you want to sit on my lap and we can both slide down together?” Harry asked.
He could see the figurative gears turning in Arlo’s head before getting a tentative nod, slowly uncurling his body from the corner he’d tucked himself in. Crawling into Harry’s open arms who sighed in relief.
Harry sat there for a moment and held Arlo before moving to sit on the edge of the slide. He situated Arlo on his lap and looked down the slide. Brad and Lloyd now stood next to a panicking Gemma who was looking up at him.
“You can do this Arlo!” he heard you cheer up at them, making him smile.
“See Bub, they’re all cheering for you and waiting for us. Are you ready?” he asked one more time in a soft voice.
His fearful gaze looked down the slide but hesitantly nodded ‘yes’ to his Uncle.
Harry didn’t hesitate and pushed off the edge, playfully ‘woooing’ all the way down till they crashed into the water pool at the bottom of the slide.
You clapped and cheered along with Brad and Lloyd, praising Arlo for his bravery as you offered both of them a helping hand off the slide.
Gemma sighed in relief, taking Arlo into a big hug when he was within arms reach, not caring if she got wet, “I’m so proud of you Bub.” she whispered to her son. Kissing the side of his temple, she sat him back down and watched as he ran off to do something else, not even phased by what had just happened.
Brad and Lloyd went back to their activities they were monitoring, Harry made his way back over to the water balloon bucket, and you opened the slide back up for the kids.
Gemma stood there though trying to shake off the adrenaline rush she was feeling due to the panic she was in. “Gemma.” she heard you call, getting her to look at you.
“You can go sit down if you need a moment.” you offered with a soft smile.
Nodding her head, she took a deep breath, “I think I will. Thanks.” she said, giving you a weak smile in return before crossing the field to the benches that sat under the trees.
Turning back to the slide, you continued to help kids off of it, until you were hit in the back with a water balloon. You screamed at the sudden cold water on your hot skin and soaking your clothes. Whipping your head around, you saw Harry standing a few yards behind you, wiggling his eyebrows playfully.
“You’re gonna pay for that Styles!” you yelled at him, walking towards the bucket of balloons and grabbing a few yourself.
The students were laughing and cheering watching you both pursue each other in a balloon fight. Throwing your first shot, he dodged it, the balloon hitting the ground with a splash.
Harry was quick to retaliate, and while you were talented at many things, your reflexes weren’t what you wished they could be. The balloon struck you in the stomach, making you groan in frustration and grow even more determined to get a good hit on him.
Harry lifted his arms doing a victorious cheer for his shot and that’s when you chose to strike. Throwing the balloon when he wasn’t prepared to dodge it, nailing him right in the side. He gasped and looked at you with a dramatic sad face. “You’ve betrayed me!” he yelled, carelessly throwing the rest of his balloons your way.
You laughed loudly, taking the blows of the ones that hit you and then ran towards him throwing the other balloons you also held.
Picking you up around your waist, Harry and you cackled with laughter as he spun you around. Losing his footing, you both fell to the ground, still in a heap of laughter.
Harry looked down at you as he now hovered on top of you. You both smiled at each other as the laughter settled between you both. You saw Harry glance from your eyes to your lips, making you panic slightly. He must have missed the slightly panicked look on your face because he started to lean in.
Desperate to avoid him kissing you in front of your students, you took the last remaining water balloon you held in your hand and smashed it on top of his head.
Harry looked down at you, shocked and speechless. The students around y’all laughed loudly and Harry couldn’t help but smirk at you, shaking his head and standing to his feet. He offered you his hand to help you up which you gladly accepted with a smirk of your own.
Pulling you in close, he whispered in your ear, “You’ll pay for that later.”
You couldn’t help but giggle as you replied, “Don’t threaten me with a good time Harry.” giving him a flirty wink before walking away.
Gemma walked up to Harry and slapped him in the shoulder, “You’re what the kids call, down bad.” before walking over to help with the relay race some of the kids were running in.
Harry looked over to you, back at your spot by the slide, “Yeah I am.” he mumbled to himself.
- - - - - - - -
After their time outside was up, Harry and his friends helped you walk kids to the restrooms to change into their dry clothes.
Putting on another movie for them to finish the day off with you even made some popcorn to pass out as a treat while they ate their lunches.
One by one the adults changed their clothes as well if needed, and you were thankful to get out of your own wet clothes and into some dry ones. When you got back to the classroom, you were pleased to see the kids and adults once again engrossed in the film you’d chosen. Who doesn’t like Finding Nemo?
As dismissal time approached, you started encouraging your kids to gather their things and clean up their desk area, that way they can leave faster when their name was called for pick up. Gemma took that as his opportunity to leave, along with Brad and Lloyd.
“Thank you for letting us help out today. It was so much fun!” Lloyd gushed, pulling you into a soft hug.
“Aww of course! You’re all welcomed to help anytime we have an event.” you encouraged, giving Brad and Gemma a farewell hug as well. “See you tomorrow Arlo!” you called as he left with his Mother. Turning back to your desk, Harry now sat behind it with a smirk on his face.
“Comfy?” you asked with an amused tone.
Nodding, he leaned back in the chair, “You should join me.” he offered with a wink.
Shaking your head with a soft laugh, you continued to dismiss the last of your kids, closing the door when the last one left so you and Harry could have some privacy.
Walking back over to your desk, Harry’s eyes were glued to you, following your every move and scanning your body up and down. While the attention flattered you, it did make you a little nervous to be under his gaze like that. A good kind of nervous though you decided.
Now that the lights were on in the classroom, you could see how red Harry’s face was. You scrunch your face sympathetically, “Did you wear any sunscreen?” you asked, giving him a weird feeling of deja vu.
Shaking his head ‘no’, you opened your desk drawer and pulled out a small tube of aloe. “How did I know I would need this today?” you teased, popping open the cap and squeezing some into the palm of your hand. Closing the bottle and setting it back down on your desk, you returned to him, meeting his eyes that were now looking up at you expectantly.
“Stand up for me.” you instructed, biting your lip to not laugh at how fast he did what you’d asked.
“This is gonna be cold.” you warned, scooping some of the aloe up with your fingers, and softly rubbed it on his cheeks. He jumped slightly at the coolness then relaxed under your touch. His skin was hot to the touch and you knew he must have been feeling some sort of relief from the cool gel. You slowly continued to spread the aloe over his face, and he admired the concentration painted across your own.
Getting flashbacks to the Zoo when you’d rubbed sunscreen on his face, he decided he could get used to you dotting over him like this.
Glancing up to meet his gaze, you smiled, looking away quickly as you continued your task, “You’re staring.” you softly commented.
“Can you blame me?” he asked, grasping you softly by the waist and pulling you closer.
You weren’t sure how it was possible for one person to leave you feeling breathless all the time but Harry was damn good at it.
Looking back up at him, you both gazed into each other’s eyes for a solid two minutes, his eyes glancing to your lips for the second time that day and back to your eyes. This time, you didn’t feel nervous, you wanted him to make the move.
Sensing your lack of hesitation, he couldn’t help but ask, “Are you going to stop me this time if I try to kiss you?”
“No.” you breathed out, shaking your head.
“Good.” he said leaning in, you met him halfway, his pillowy soft lips pressed against your own.
They always talk about sparks but you felt like a whole firework show was erupting between you two. Pressing your lips more firmly against his own, he pulled your body flush against his, as he just as enthusiastically returned the kiss. Clearly the fireworks were a mutual feeling.
As you both slowly pulled your lips apart from one another, he leaned his forehead against your own, a goofy smile plastered across his face, “I’ve wanted to do that for months now.” he admitted.
You laughed, gently brushing his hair off his face, “That was perfect. You’re perfect.”
“So are you.” he said back.
Giving him another soft peck on his lips, you bumped your nose against his own, “Walk me to my car? They’re going to be closing up the school soon.”
He accepted your offer, helping you gather your things along with his own to carry out.
Turning off the light to your classroom, you held the door open for him then closed it once more, gesturing with your head for him to follow you.
Unlocking your car, you opened the back seat and sat your bags down, taking the rest that he held and putting them in the car too before shutting the door. Turning to him, you smiled, “Thank you for helping today. You made it a lot of fun.”
“Not that hard when you’re fun to be around.” he said in return, opening your door for you to get in the driver's seat. “Let me know when you make it home safe.” he said, leaning in the door once you were settled in the seat and putting on your seat belt.
“Of course.” you said, smiling up at him.
Leaning in he couldn’t resist giving you one more kiss, and who could refuse such a gesture?
“Drive safe Honey.” he said, gently against your lips.
“You too.” you said back, pecking his lips one last time yourself.
Smiling as he pulled away, he closed your door for you and tapped the top of your car before walking to his own, going your separate ways till you meet again.

MS.HONEY: HAPPY BIRTHDAY ARLO!

Pairing: Harry Styles x F!Reader Word Count: 2k+ Warnings: fluff, fire(they light a birthday candle), Arlo throws a temper tantrum(he's literally 5) Summary: It takes a village to raise a special needs child. Sitting on his Mum’s lap, Arlo was reaching for every little object he could get his hands near. “He’s getting antsy, Harry hurry up!” Gemma called her little brother. The distance between the dining room table and the kitchen wasn’t very far and Harry could hear his nephew start to fuss.
“I’m coming, I’m coming!” he sighed, pulling the cupcake out of the box and sticking a number five candle in the top of it. Lighting it, he then gently picked it up and brought it into the dining room singing, “Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Arlo, happy birthday to you!”
Everyone else joined in, Anne recording the tender moment for Gemma to watch back later on. The cupcake was gently placed in front of Arlo who was looking at it with wide eyes. A smile grew on his face as he became excited.
“Blow out the candle bub!” Gemma encouraged, softly blowing at the candle to show him. Arlo screamed, waving his arms to try and get his dad to stop.
Harry squeezed his lips together, fighting hard to not laugh. Arlo loved bright lights, including fire. He watched his sister roll her eyes, blowing the candle out for Arlo since he was going to have a tantrum over doing it.
Fat tears rolled down Arlo’s cheeks as he sobbed, not understanding why they had to blow out the candle. “Here, I’ll take him if you want to gather presents into the living room.” Harry offered, holding his arms out to take the crying child. Gemma was thankful for her brother and how much he helped out with her son. She was scared to death when she learned that she was pregnant. That fear skyrocketed when she learned that her son was on the spectrum. She wasn’t sure how she would do this alone, her ex wanted nothing to do with their kid after his diagnosis.
Harry really stepped up though and he would never be able to pay him back fully for all that he’s done.
Arlo all but melted into Harry’s chest when Gemma handed him off. “I know Bub it’s gonna be okay.” Harry said in a soft comforting tone. “Do you want to open some presents? I heard you’ve got some pretty cool gifts in there from Grandma!” making his voice more high pitched to make the idea seem more appealing.
Giving his uncle a gentle nod, Harry smiled and took him over to the corner of the living room that had all the gifts. Gemma joined shortly after, handing Arlo a gift to tear into. He only needed redirecting a few times during the gift opening which made Gemma proud. Arlo got an array of things from books, lego sets, and a big traffic light that would light up like a night light. Arlo’s favorite gift was obviously the traffic light which Harry gloated about since it was his gift.
“The spiderman legos are cool too! Right Arlo?” Brad asked, trying to knock Harry off his high horse a little.
Arlo just laughed and shook his head ‘no’, making Harry puff out his chest a little further in pride.
Gemma rolled his eyes, “Arlo, can you say thank you to everyone for coming and all your presents?” he asked, brushing her son’s long hair out of his face. He threw a hissy fit anytime Gemma would try to have it cut. Harry assured Gemma that Arlo just wanted to look like him, essentially helping Gemma drop the subject and quit worrying about it.
Looking around at everyone with his big doe-like brown eyes, he mumbled a soft “thwank yew.”, getting a chorus of ‘you’re welcome’ back from everybody.
The lovely thing about kids birthday parties is that they tend to clear out pretty quickly after cake and presents are done. Arlo was falling asleep on Gemma’s chest, soaking up the cuddles she rarely got nowadays from her boy. “Have you found a school for bub yet?” his Mum asked, sitting across from him.
Harry’s ears zoned in on the conversation as he was curious himself. He was sitting with the toys Arlo had gotten, opening them and putting batteries in them if needed. He knew his nephew would want to play with them right away when he woke up from his nap. Looking up at Gemma he paused for a second to listen in on the conversation.
Giving her mum a proud smile, Gemma nodded. “It’s a private school specifically for kids with special needs. I was very fortunate to be on the waitlist and get a call saying he could be a student there. I went and toured the school, and Mum, it’s amazing. They have so many things that will be great for Arlo.” she gushed.
Clapping her hands softly to not disturb Arlo, she gave Gemma a giddy smile, “Oh Gem I’m so proud of you. Tell me all about it.” she encouraged, turning her body to face Gemma more.
“Well, they have this adorable barn where they keep therapy horses, chickens, and rabbits. Right next to that is the lower campus where Arlo will go, then next to that right after the field and track area is the upper campus for the older kids in like highschool grades. They have speech therapy, yoga, music classes, field trips, and the classes are very small and personal.” Gemma was sitting on pins and needles to tell somebody about this and she was over the moon to finally be able to share it with her family. “And the best part is that even after Arlo graduates, there’s a post grad program he can join and they will help him with jobs and transitioning out of school to adulthood.”
Anne and Harry couldn’t believe their ears, “This school sounds amazing.” Harry spoke up, impressed by what he’d heard.
“I agree. Gemma, this school is going to be perfect for him. I’m so excited for you.” Anne second Harry’s statement.
Gemma smiled down at Arlo, kissing his forehead softly while he now slept. “It’s going to be weird not having him all day.” Gemma softly spoke, feeling herself get choked up. “He’s growing up so quickly. I can’t keep up with how fast it’s going. I wish things would slow down.”
Her admission made Harry’s chest tighten. Arlo was his favorite person, his best friend, aside from Gemma of course. Knowing that Gemma was feeling the same way as him was a relief but also horrible as he hated knowing his sister was upset.
“Oh, Gem.” Anne said, standing to move over next to Gemma, pulling her into her side and cuddling both Gemma and Arlo. “I know exactly what you’re talking about.” she sympathized, combing her fingers gently through his long brown hair. “Imagine trying to keep up with milestones when there’s two of you.” she lightheartedly jokes. “It seemed like every time I turned around, Harry and you were saying a new word, walking, cutting teeth. It’s a lot but I’ve absolutely loved watching you both grow into the man and woman you are today. And you’ll eventually have that same mindset too for Arlo.” she finished with a kiss to the top of his head, making Gemma smile a little. “Thanks Mum.”, “Anything for my babies.” she assured her. “Now, I think Arlo had a wonderful birthday and got some amazing presents. Let's celebrate having a successful party instead of being sad, okay?” patting Gemma’s shoulder, she stood from the couch. “Would you like a beer?” she asked, making her way into the kitchen.
“No thank you. But I would love some of the Macaroni Salad you brought!” she said back to her.
“Wait, did you even eat earlier?” Harry asked, not recalling seeing Gemma ever grab a plate of food.
“Uh,... no…” Gemma sheepishly said, looking from Harry down to her hands.
Harry sighed, “Gemma..”
“I know Harry, you don’t need to reprimand me about it.” Gemma shut him down, taking the bowl her mom handed to her and took a bite of the food, groaning happily at the taste.
“He’s just trying to help.” Anne gently said, sitting back on the couch with her, sipping on a glass of wine.
“I know… I’m just scared I’ll miss something if I’m not there.” Gemma huffed, shoveling another spoon full of food in her mouth.
“Take it from me hun, you’ll miss a lot more if you don’t properly take care of yourself. That includes making yourself a plate of food while somebody else keeps an eye on this one.” tilting her glass to the sleeping child, causing Gemma to look back down at him.
She sighed, her chest heavy with guilt for even needing help. “I don’t want to be a burden.” Gemma admitted.
“You’re not a burden. Neither is Arlo. I love you two and I want to do anything I can to make things easy for you two. I’m here for you no matter what.” Harry spoke up, tightening the screw back on the last toy, he moved to the couch next to Gemma and his Mom.
Setting her bowl to the side, her appetite was temporarily lost due to the subject. “He’s my responsibility. It was my choice to have unprotected sex and I should be the one to deal with that. Not dump it on everyone else.” Gemma tried his best to explain.
Before Harry could speak, ready to smack Gemma upside the head, his Mom spoke up in her gentle caring way, “Baby, you aren’t dumping it on any of us. We want to help. We want to be there. Have you ever heard the phrase ‘it takes a village’? Well, it’s true. And you’re beyond blessed to have a village of people ready to help you. Don’t push it away and let that prideful attitude of yours win. I love that you want to take responsibility for Arlo. It shows me how mature you are and what a great parent you’ll be.” Her reassuring words were exactly what Gemma needed to hear right now. And Harry couldn’t help but nod along in agreement to his Mom. “It’s okay to admit you need help.” she made sure to clarify. “It’s scary and stressful being a single parent. But you don’t have to do this alone okay?” giving her a soft smile, which she easily returned, the weight on her chest feeling lighter.
“I love you all so much. Thank you for loving Arlo. He’s the best surprise I could have ever gotten.” she chuckled, remembering back to fall time 6 years ago when she told her boyfriend she was pregnant. What started out as an exciting time quickly turned south and for the worst. Gemma has done everything in her power since then to give her son the best life possible.
“He’s my favorite surprise too.” Harry smiled at both of them. “Finish your food before Arlo wakes up.” he pointed to the bowl, knowing Gemma wouldn’t eat it if not instructed to. Rolling her eyes at Harry, she picked it up from the side table and took another bite, but not before sticking her tongue out at Harry childishly.
Bed time had quickly approached Gemma and Arlo that evening. Bath time routines were completed, pajamas were on, teeth were brushed, and hair was brushed. “Okay Bub it’s time for bed.” Gemma said, setting him down on his tiny bed.
“Gummy mumma.” Arlo pouted, causing his Mom to face palm.
“Of course, let me go get it.” she said, running to the bathroom to get a vitamin gummy from the cabinet.
Returning to Arlo’s room, she held it out to him, “One gummy for the birthday boy.” he smiled. Arlo happily took the gummy, thinking it was a piece of candy he got before bed every night instead of a vitamin.
“Thwank Yew Mumma!” Arlo said, laying down and covering himself up.
“Goodnight Bub.” Gemma said softly, kissing her son on the forehead. “And happy birthday.” she told him once more. His eyes already drooping closed, Arlo softly mumbled his own goodnight,
“Nini Mumma.” falling asleep as Gemma turned off his light, the soft glow of a night light illuminating the room in a soft blue glow.
Closing his door slowly, Gemma made her way to her room and collapsed onto her own bed, sighing loudly. Another milestone down, to be quickly followed by another. She was definitely going to cry on Arlo’s first day of school.

MS.HONEY: LUNCH TIME
Tumblr media
Pairing: Harry Styles x F!Reader Word Count: 2.3k+ Warnings: tooth rotting fluff!, mentions of periods and cramps :( Summary: It takes a village to raise a special needs child. When he accompanies Gemma and Arlo on his first day of school, he meets Ms.Honey. Harry decides Kindergarten might not be so bad after all. A/N: For the sake of the story, Gemma and Harry live in the states. I know more about the school system in America than the UK so it just made sense! The following week Arlo came home with two envelopes in his backpack. One with Gemma’s name on it and the other with Harry’s. Gemma opened the one with her name on it and pulled out a card. The front of it had a small bee on it and said ‘Bee-yond Thankful”. She couldn’t help but smile at the silly pun as she flipped open the card to read it, her smile grew even wider.
Gemma,
I wanted to thank you for chaperoning the zoo trip last week! It was such a pleasure having you with us. I hope you and Arlo made plenty of memories! I know I did :)
-Ms.Honey
Immediately grabbing her phone, she hit Harry’s contact bubble to call him.
“Hello?”
“I need you to stop by my place when you have a few.”
“Why?” Harry asked, confused.
“You’ve got a card from Ms.Honey. I got one too and it was a thank you card” Gemma said in a teasing tone.
Harry chuckled, “Open it and read it to me then.”
Gemma was quick to pick up the envelope and tear it open. Pulling the card out, she began to read it silently to herself.
“Uh, Gemma?” Harry called through the phone.
“Sorry, sorry.” Gemma said, clearing her throat to read. “Harry, this was probably the most fun I’ve ever had on a zoo field trip and it was all thanks to you. You are the perfect chaperone partner anyone could ask for. You entertained the kids, and even entertained me.” a soft gasp could be heard from Gemma as he read the next part, “Since you were so forward to ask me out I would like to be forward in return. At the bottom of this card is my cell number. Call or text me whenever. Yours sweetly, Ms.Honey.”
“Holy shit.” Harry whispered while Gemma giggled manically like an excited school girl.
“I’m going to text you this number and you’re going to hang up and call her like NOW.” Gemma demanded, putting Harry on speaker to open their texts and quickly send him your contact information.
Harry’s text notification sounded in his ear quickly after Gemma sent it. “Fine, talk to you lat-” the end tone rang through his ear letting him know Gemma had hung up on him. Rolling his eyes, he opened the text and stared at your number. His psalm suddenly felt sweaty, his stomach turning with nerves. This was all becoming very real, very fast. He loved it but it also terrified him.
Quickly tapping the number before he could overthink it he held the phone up to his ear and listened to the nerve wracking sound of the dial tone.
It rang three times before you picked up, softly answering with a “Hello?”, making Harry melt into his chair. “Hey Ms.Honey. It’s Harry. I got your card.” he greeted back, picking his nail along the arm of the chair out of nervous habit.
“Oh! Hi Harry! I’m so glad you got it.” your smile could be felt through the phone and it helped ease his nerves some.
“It was very sweet. Thank you for all the kind words. I had a lot of fun with you and the kids at the zoo.” your cheeks were stained pink with blush, and so were his. This was the fun part of having a crush on somebody. Everything is so new and fun. You never know what to really expect that might knock you off your feet, or take your breath away.
“I had a lot of fun too. AJ and Sean have asked if you will come on more field trips with us.” you recalled with a tiny giggle. “They really took a liking to you. I shouldn't be shocked though considering how great you are with Arlo.” covering your mouth, you inwardly cringed hoping you didn’t say too much.
Harry was absolutely over the moon though and felt as though you really paid attention to him. It was genuine attention and not the ‘what can i get out of you’ attention like he was used to from most women. You saw HIM. Harry Styles. Not Harry Styles the world famous pop star.
“I’ll definitely be at any event your class has this year. I’ll make sure of it.” He guaranteed. “So, how was your day?” he decided to ask.
You sighed softly into the receiver of the phone, “As far as my class goes it was great. They’re so helpful! I was feeling under the weather today and they could tell. Arlo was so worried about me!” you giggled.
Harry laughed with you. Arlo was always sensitive to those around him and never liked when somebody else was sad or sick. “I’m sorry you weren’t feeling well today. What’s wrong if you don’t mind me asking?”
“Well, this might be T-M-I but I’m on my period and the cramps have been horrible.” scrunching your nose in distaste at the mention of it. The heating pad that laid on your stomach helped relieve the pain some but not completely. “This is the worst it’s been in months.”
Harry was instantly sympathetic for you. He could remember his sister crying over her cramps and even having to buy her tampons and pads. “Are you craving anything in particular? My sister would always want something chocolate.”
“Chocolate sounds amazing right now.” you groaned, longing for it. “I’ve also been craving Wendy’s. It’s not my go to but for some reason I just want to dip my chicken nuggets in a chocolate frosty right now.”
“You what?!” Harry said, surprised by the combination.
You couldn’t contain your laughter. “I know it sounds disgusting and crazy but I swear it’s delicious!” you defended.
Harry shook his head, smiling at your ridiculousness, “I’ll take your word for it.”
You smiled as well, looking down at your lap and fidgeting with the cord to the heating pad. “I should probably get ready for bed. Got to be up early to teach some kids ya know?”
Glancing at the clock on his wall, Harry didn’t realize how late it was when he called her and suddenly felt stupid for calling so late. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t realize that time when I called you. Go get some beauty rest.”
“Oh, it’s no problem at all. I’m glad you called. I’ll talk to you tomorrow?” you asked hopefully.
“Of course you will. Good night Honey.”
“Good night Harry.” you teasingly said in return, ending the call.
Harry sat there for a minute with a goofy grin on his face, looking up at the ceiling. He instantly knew what he was going to do tomorrow.
The next day, Harry got an early start. His first stop was the pharmacy by his house. Picking up an assortment of chocolates for you and a new heating pad that you could use at school. His next stop was a little later in the morning to Wendy’s. Getting you the nuggets and chocolate frosty you were craving.
At the school you were gathering your students together to take to the cafeteria for lunch. In a single file line they followed you with their lunch boxes in hand or to just join the line to get a hot lunch. Today was pizza day for those who didn’t pack a lunch. After dropping them off, you walked back to your classroom and to your surprise Harry was standing there in front of Arlo’s desk that was now covered in bags. “Well what a lovely surprise! To what do I owe such a pleasure?” you asked with a bright smile.
Harry returned the smile back to you. He couldn’t believe his luck to show up and surprise you. “Nothing m’lady. Just wanted to have lunch with you. I might have gotten you a few presents as well.” he shrugged nonchalantly.
Placing your hand softly over your heart you approached the desk with your bottom lip pouted out. You admired the bags of goodies before looking back up to him “Harry you shouldn’t have.”
“I wanted to.” he insisted, holding out the first bag to you.
Taking the bag from his grasp, you opened it and pulled out the box that held the heating pad, giggling when you realized what it was.
“I figured you should have one at school and at home. That way the pain won’t be so bad while you’re at work.” he shrugged.
“That’s so thoughtful of you. Thank you!” you said, setting it to the side and looking to see what else was in the bag. “Oh my gosh that’s so much chocolate!” you laughed. “I’m set for a couple months now!”
Looking up from the bag, he was now holding out a Wendy’s bag and a cup.
“It’s the nuggets and frosty you told me about last night,” he explained.
Doing a little happy dance you took the bag and cup, “This totally beats the microwave dinner I was going to eat!” Setting it on the desk next to you, you then reached for Harry and pulled him into a hug. “Thank you.” you softly whispered in his ear.
Wrapping his arms around your waist he pulled you in closer, hugging you back. “A queen bee deserves to be spoiled.” he whispered back.
Giggling, you pulled away and pushed two of the desks together, “Join me.” you said, patting the desk in front of you.
“As you wish.” he bowed dramatically and brought his own lunch over, sitting in front of you.
“So, how are you feeling today?” he asked, taking a bite of his food then looking over to you.
He watched you take one of the nuggets and dramatically dip it into the frosty before taking a bite of it. Shrugging your shoulders as you chewed, you covered your mouth to be respectful. “Better than yesterday. That heating pad will be my best friend after this.”
He chuckled, nodding in understanding, “I’m glad it’ll come to good use. My sister had it rough too. She probably still does. I haven’t really talked to her about it.”
“She’s lucky to have a brother like you. Your mama raised you right.”
Your compliment made him smile shyly down at his food. “Thanks. She could definitely tell you some horror stories about growing up with me.” he chuckled. “We would give her the world though.”
“I can tell.” you softly said with a gentle smile. “Have you always been this close with Gemma?”
“Yeah. It was mainly just the two of us when we were younger. Mum worked a lot to take care of us. Dad wasn’t really around. I do have other friends now like Brad and Llyod.” he explained, taking a sip of his drink.
“Who’s Brad? I hear Arlo mention him and Llyod sometimes.” you asked, leaning on your hand that was propped on the desk by your elbow.
“He’s Llyod’s best friend. We’ve all known each other so long that we consider ourselves brothers. So Arlo knows him as Uncle Brad. Don’t let the kid fool you either…I’m the favorite uncle.” he proudly said.
You laughed, shaking your head, “I never doubted that for a moment. Arlo adores you and he’s lucky to have you.”
“I think it’s more like I’m lucky to have him. I’ve learned so much being his uncle and I continue to learn everyday. I also wouldn’t have met amazing people like you. So, yeah I’m the lucky one.” the dreamy smile on his face as he looked at you made you blush.
“You sure know how to sweet talk.” The teasing wasn’t unnoticed by him and he was happy to see that you could be playful back to him.
“Not hard when you’re the sweetest thing I’ve ever met.”
“Oh, please don’t make me vomit!” you both laughed together.
The laughter slowly faded and you both eat silently, stealing quick looks at one another and catching the other staring each time.
Glancing at the clock, you realized you only had five minutes till you had to go get your class from the cafeteria. “Oh, shoot I should clean up and go get my kids.” you said, standing up.
Harry held his hands out, taking your own in his, “Hey, don’t worry about it. I’ll clean up and be out of here before you get back. Don’t rush.”
“Are you sure?” your apprehension had you feeling guilty for wanting to accept his offer. He’d already done so much for you and the last thing you wanted to do was take advantage of his kindness.
Softly smiling at you, he gave your hands a soft squeeze, “I’m positive. Now you can walk and go get your kids.”
Standing from the desk, he pulled you in for another hug that you didn’t hesitate to return. “Thank you for having lunch with me.” he whispered once more to you.
“Thank you for bringing me lunch and the gifts.” you whispered back. “Better watch out or they’re going to start calling you Mr.Honey.” you teased.
His giggle made you smile and when you pulled away from the hug, his cheeks were as red as ever.
Feeling bold, he leaned forward and gently kissed your forehead, “It would be an honor to be Mr.Honey next to you.”
There was no doubt that your eyes were shining like a disney princess when she saw her prince charming for the first time. Never did you dream of such words being spoken to you, or such thoughtful gifts being given to you.
“Honey?”
“Yeah…”
“Go get your kids.”
“CRAP!” you whisper yelled, turning to quickly dash to the cafeteria. “Call me later!” you said as you walked out of the room.
When you returned, the desks were moved back to normal and the desks were cleaned off, Harry nowhere to be seen. Your leftover frosty now sat on your desk next to a little sticky note that Harry had scribbled on.
Have a good day
–Mr.Honey ;)

The weather was truly in your favor today. A soft breeze, bright blue sky, the birds were happily chirping and flying back and forth between the trees and your bird feeders. It was what you would describe as your idea of a perfect day. Laid out in your hammock, you had your eyes closed as you listened to the songs the birds would sing for you, and enjoyed the cool breeze against your face. The sun was starting to set and the air had that summer-like chill to it when you decided to head inside.
Grabbing a microwavable dinner from your freezer, you popped it into the microwave to cook. While the microwave worked its magic, you grabbed your phone to see what calls or texts you’ve missed while outside today. You weren’t shocked to see a missed call from Harry along with several texts.
Harry: When were you going to tell me your birthday was next week?
Harry: If you think we aren’t doing anything to celebrate you’re crazy!
Harry: Woman, call me back so I can make birthday plans for you!!!!
You could imagine how flustered he must have been right now waiting for you to reply to him. The teasing part of you wanted to make him wait a little longer but the soft side of you that Harry occupied had you calling him back without a second thought. As if he was looking at his phone, just waiting for it to ring, he answered on the second ring.
“About damn time!” He greeted you.
It made you laugh, shaking your head fondly, “Sorry, I was laying in my hammock all afternoon and I didn’t have my phone with me.”
Harry took a moment to envision you laid out and enjoying the beautiful weather today. He wished more than anything he was there to enjoy it with you. “Fine, you’re forgiven. But next time I won’t be so nice!” he threatened.
You knew he wasn’t being serious though. You could tell by the goofy voice he put on when he said it. “So who snitched about my birthday?” you asked, curious.
“We, technically the school, but Gemma called me and told me. So let’s blame Gemma.”
“That darn Gemma.” you decided to play along.
“Right? An absolute menace to our society. She must be stopped!”
“Well you’re her brother…so wouldn't that make you just as much of a menace?”
“Do you think I’m a menace?”
“Yes.”
“WELL I NEVER.” He exclaimed, making you laugh once more. He always knew how to tickle your funny bone.
“I’m only half joking.” you promised, grabbing your food out of the microwave and stirring it up.
“Well Ms.Jokester, what do you want to do for your birthday?” He asked, making himself comfortable on his own couch while he talked to you.
“Well considering I’ll be working, nothing really.” sitting down at your dining room table, and putting him on speaker phone so she could sit comfortably and eat.
“You’re working on your birthday? That’s lame! What about next weekend then? We could do something.”
It was endearing how much he wanted to spend your birthday together, but you couldn’t ignore the knot of guilt in your stomach thinking about it. “Harry, I’m not sure if that’s a good idea.”
“I know you want to wait till after Arlo’s graduation to date and I respect that. We can hang out as friends though, right? Is that allowed?”
Thinking over his words, you felt the knot loosen in your stomach. “I guess you’re right.” you said, pushing your food around the plastic container. “I just don’t want either of us to get in trouble.”
“I know Honey. I’m sorry that it has to be like this right now. I still want to show you how special you are and celebrate your birthday. Even if that means we have to sit on opposite sides of the room to do it.”
Smiling at your food, you couldn’t help but blush, “well that’s really sweet of you.” taking a deep breath, you breathed out, “Fine, I’ll bite and let you celebrate my birthday with me.”
“A splendid choice!” Harry exclaimed. “What would the birthday girl like to do?”
You pondered the idea for a moment. What you really wanted to do might be too boring for his taste. You couldn’t think of anything else though. “Honestly, I want to stay in. How about we get sushi, stay at mine and spend the evening watching a movie?”
Harry hummed, “If that’s what the birthday girl wants, it’s what the birthday girl gets.”
“Really? You don’t think that’s too boring?” you asked, feeling uncertain.
“Honey…” Harry softly said, “Listen, if it’s with you then I’m going to have a great time. If that’s what you want to do then I’ll do it. And if you must know, that’s my ideal type of evening. So, I’d be more than thrilled to do it with you. I promise.”
You smiled at the phone, “Thanks Harryy. You’re the best.”
“You only deserve the best. I’ll talk to you tomorrow, okay? Enjoy the rest of your relaxing evening.”
“You too.”

The day of your birthday was a total blurr. Even though you were working, the day flew by with flying colors. Your students brought in small hand made gifts for you that just melted your heart. You promised all of them that their work would be proudly displayed at your home to always remember them by.
While the kids were at lunch, you had a special delivery again from Nancy. She came to your classroom with an arm full of flowers and a box of chocolate covered strawberries. “Mr.Honey has done it again.” Nancy said in a teasing tone.
You giggled, taking the gifts from her, “He’s too good to me.” you told her.
“You’re dating right?” Nancy asked.
Setting the case down on your desk along with the box of strawberries, you sighed softly, admiring the flowers. “No, I told him we couldn’t date till Arlo graduated.”
“What?! Why?!” Nancy exclaimed, looking at you with a dumbfounded expression.
You returned the look with a confused one, “I’m not allowed to date the family of the students in my class.”
Nancy brought her palm to her face and shook her head, “Oh, Honey that’s only for parents. You won’t get in trouble if you date him.” laughing at the shocked look on your face.
“Well then, he’ll be very happy to know that.” you said, giving a shocked giggled back to her.
“Happy birthday to you.” she teasingly sang to you with a wink, walking out of the room.
You couldn’t wait to surprise Harry on Saturday with this new found information.
- - - - - - - - -
When Saturday arrived, you were up early and stress cleaning, even the parts of your home that you knew Harry wouldn’t see or care about. It had to be perfect. Nothing could go wrong. By the time midafternoon rolled around, you were collapsed on the couch, sweaty from all the cleaning you’d done. Your phone vibrated on the coffee table next to you, making you groan as you reached for it and swiped to answer the call. “Hello?” you breathed out.
Harry chuckled through the phone, “You sound like you ran a marathon.”
“I basically did. I’ve been cleaning all day.”
“Perfect, I’m gonna mess it all up now.” he teased.
“I’ll have to hurt you.” you laughed softly.
“Don’t threaten me with a good time babe.” making your heart skip a beat. “I’m getting the sushi now and going to grab a few more snacks from the store. I should be heading your way soon.”
“Good, I’m starving.” you groaned. “I’ll see you in a little bit. Drive safe.”
“Will do Honey.”
After you hung up, you had to force yourself to get off the couch and go shower. As much as you hated it at first, the hot water was welcoming to your aching back. You were super glad at this point that you decided to spend the night in. When you got out of the shower, the cool air made you feel more awake and refreshed.
Picking out your cutest pair of pajamas, you figured you might as well stay comfy if you were gonna spend the evening watching movies. Throwing your hair into a messy bun, you gathered all the fluffy pillows off your bed and brought them to the living room.
You arranged them on the floor so the two of you could comfortably sit together. Moving the coffee table to the side, you even grabbed a few fluffy blankets to lay out and use if you wanted to.
“Ooo wine!” you hummed to yourself as the idea popped in your head. Going to the fridge to get the bottle out, you were interrupted by a knock on your door. Setting the bottle on the counter, you jogged over to the door and opened it to see Harry’s bright smile and sparkling eyes. “Happy birthday!” he cheered, walking in as you made room for him through the doorway.
A soft giggle could be heard from you as you watched him trapease his way to the living room, dumping the bags on the makeshift blanket pallet you made just moments ago. Turning to see you’d followed him, he wrapped you in a hug, picking you up and spinning you around. You couldn’t help but squeal with laughter, tucking your face into his neck as you held onto him tightly.
Gently setting you down, he leaned his forehead to your own, looking into your eyes. “I’ve missed you.” he whispered.
“I’ve missed you too.” you told him, playing with his curls gently at the nape of his neck, pressing a soft kiss to his lips, which he eagerly returned.
“How about we eat and start a movie? I’m starving.” rubbing his hands along your sides gently, rubbing just low enough to drive you crazy.
You nodded, “I like that idea.” you breathlessly said, “Let me go grab the wine from the kitchen.”
Letting you go reluctantly, you were quick to retrieve the bottle along with two wine glasses. “I hope you like red.”
“I love it.” he assured, setting out your sushi in front of you while you poured both of you a glass.
“What movie did you pick to watch first?” he asked, accepting the glass when you handed it to him.
“Rose Red.” you proudly said, taking a sip of your wine.
Harry hummed in approval, “Stephen King. Excellent choice.”
It was indeed an excellent choice. By half way through the movie, Harry and you were cuddled together, bellies full of good food and beginning to feel a little tipsy from the wine.
You quickly discovered with Harry that he loved to talk during films. Which was perfect since you enjoyed it as well. While he would critique the film’s small details, you would make off handed comments about the characters and how stupid some of them were. Harry was amused when you would go on a random tirade about a stupid decision one of the character’s made. “For somebody who likes this movie you sure are yelling at it a lot.” Harry noted, giggling.
“I do like it! It’s just fun to yell at it too.”
“It’s cute.” Harry mumbled, pulling you closer into him.
Looking up at him, and him looking down at you, made you not want to wait any longer. “Harry…I have something to tell you.”
“What is it?” he asked, feeling a little nervous.
“Nancy brought me the flowers and strawberries as you know. Well she asked if we were dating. I said no and she asked me why like I was crazy.” You giggled, thinking back to her facial expression. “I told her I wasn’t allowed to date my students' family and she told me that was only for parents. I wouldn’t get in trouble if I dated you.”
A giant smile creeped onto Harry’s face as he processed what you just told him. “Seriously?” he asked.
“Seriously.” you repeated, rubbing your nose against his own.
Pressing his lips against your own, the kiss quickly turned heated. He laid you back gently onto the pillows, positioning his body to hover above your own. This kiss showed you both the feelings you were holding back. Desperate to express through a simple gesture. “Be my girlfriend.” Harry mumbled against your lips.
“What?” you couldn’t help but giggle and smile, making him smile too.
“Be my girlfriend,” he repeated “Please.”
Looking up into his eyes, you could see the immense amount of adoration they held for you. “Yes.” you whispered. It felt right. It had to be right. They always say when you know, you know. And you were so sure in this moment that you knew. Harry couldn’t help but feel the same way.
With goofy smiles on your faces, the both of you started to giggle, feeling giddy and high from life and the happiness you brought each other. “This is the best birthday I’ve ever had.”
“And we haven’t even had dessert yet.” Harry said, suddenly sitting up and reaching for a bag.
Propping yourself up on your elbows, you watched as he pulled out a tray of cupcakes, holding one up and putting a candle in it, lighting it with his lighter. He turned to you and began to sing Happy Birthday. You watched with a smile on your face, sitting up fully to be closer to him. Once he finished, he held the cupcake closer to you.
Closing your eyes, you made a wish then blew out the candle. “Thank you Harry. For everything.” you said, taking the cupcake. Pulling the candle out and sucking the icing off of it, you hummed happily.
He chuckled, grabbing his own cupcake to eat. “I’d do anything to see that sweet smile.”
If only he knew your wish was for him to make you smile for the rest of your life.

The first month of school was full of adjustments not only for Arlo but for Gemma as well. Waking up early was a struggle for both of them. Gemma hated how many fights it caused and how it would make Arlo clam up. “I need help.” Gemma finally admitted to Harry one night on the phone. She hated admitting it and desperately wanted to have everyone believe she could do this on her own.
“How can I help?” Harry asked her, sensing his sister’s stress through the phone.
“Could you get Arlo ready in the morning and take him to school? All he does is fight with me and I don’t know if I can do another morning like we had today” Gemma's voice cracking at the mention of what happened earlier that morning.
Harry felt his chest constrict, images of Gemma stressed and Arlo upset filtered through his mind. “Of course. How about I come get him and he can stay the night with me. It sounds like you both need a break from each other.” he offered, much to Gemma’s relief.
“Yeah, I’d love that. I think he would too.” Gemma agreed, fiddling with the frayed edge of her shirt.
“Cool, pack a bag for him and I’ll be there in ten.” Harry instructed, hanging up the phone.
Walking around his house really fast, he double checked that things were picked up that he didn’t want Arlo messing with. Needless to say it’s the quickest he’s ever child proofed his home. Satisfied with how things looked he grabbed his car keys off the hook by the door, driving down to Gemma’s house.
He could hear Arlo crying as he walked up to the door, sparking a wave of worry through him. Walking through the front door without knocking, he could hear Gemma’s voice blended in with Arlo’s cries, “Arlo, stop it you’ve got to put on your shoes!” she sternly said.
Following the noise into the living room, Harry couldn’t hold back the sadness in his eyes. Gemma looked disheveled and exhausted, Arlo’s face was bright red with fat tears streaming down his face. He stood there for a moment watching Gemma take Arlo by the ankle and try to put his shoe on, only to be kicked and screamed at. Harry could see Gemma grow more frustrated the longer Arlo continued to struggle. Groaning loudly, she threw the shoe down in frustration, putting her head in her hands to try and not cry herself.
Harry quietly approached them, sitting down next to Gemma, “Go get a drink Gemma I’ll handle it okay?” he softly said, rubbing Gemmas back gently. Gemma looked at Harry with glossy, tired eyes, nodding and getting up without saying a word.
Once Gemma left the room, Harry turned to Arlo who was still crying on the couch. “Hey Bub, do you want to come have a sleepover with me?” Harry gently asked, giving him a soft smile.
Arlo’s sobs quietted some, nodding at Harry while he wiped his face with his shirt.
Trying not to cringe, Harry gave him a small smile, “Okay, well to have a sleepover with me you’ve got to put your shoes on. Can you do that for me?” he watched Arlo carefully think about it till he nodded again. Harry beamed at him, “Excellent choice Bub.” he praised him, picking up the shoe Gemma had previously thrown, sliding it onto Arlo’s foot with no fighting. Sliding on his other shoe, he gently patted his foot, “Okay, now I need you to go grab your bag.” he instructed.
Arlo nodded, sliding off the couch and heading to his room where Gemma had left his bag.
Gemma stood there on the other side of the living room, a sullen look on her face.
Harry turned to her and gave her a sympathetic smile, patting the floor next to him for Gemma to sit with him.
Returning to her spot next to Harry, Gemma took a long sip of her wine, setting the glass down on the rug they sat on. “I wish he would listen to me that easily.” Gemma said after a beat of silence.
Harry snorted a laugh and looked over at her, “Mom said that about us as kids.” he pointed out.
Gemma groaned, putting her head against her bent knees “This really is karma for me being such a crazy kid.” she sighed.
Harry patted her shoulder “Bad days come with good days.” he reassured.
Arlo came rushing back into the living room, bag in tow along with his blanket and the stuffed bee.
“He’s slept with that every night since he got it.” Gemma said in reference to the stuffed animal.
Harry smiled fondly at his nephew “I bet it's a great cuddle buddy.” he said, standing from his spot on the ground.
“Tell your Mum bye Bub.” pushing Arlo towards Gemma a little, they both stared at each other. Gemma accepted that Arlo was still shutting her out since he refused to move and give her a hug.
Giving her son a small smile instead, she looked back up at Harry, “His book bag is by the front door and his lunchbox is on the counter in the kitchen.”
Harry nodded, “I’ll grab them. And please, relax some and enjoy your time alone.” he encouraged, guiding Arlo to the door.
Gemma later texted Harry a long winded thank you for coming to her rescue, Harry sent her back a photo of Arlo asleep in his bed cuddled up to his bumble bee. Gemma would never admit it but she cried that evening, feeling like Harry had taken a giant boulder off her chest.
The next morning, Harry got up a little bit before Arlo, making him his breakfast then waking him up. “I got oatmeal ready for you Bub.” Harry softly whispered, rubbing Arlo’s back to wake him up. The thought of food quickly had Arlo sitting up and ready to get out of bed.
He followed Harry to the table where they both sat and ate breakfast. Arlo was quick to finish his food, now wide awake and ready to start his day. Harry was pleased to see his mood was better than it was last night and hoped it would carry through the day and evening when Gemma had him again.
Taking the last bite of his own food, he gathered their dishes and took them to the sink to worry about later. “Okay dude, let's get dressed and ready to go!” He said in an upbeat tone.
He was thankful Arlo was being so easy for him this morning, giving him no trouble about getting dressed, brushing his teeth, or brushing his hair. Once he had Arlo ready he sat him in front of the TV to watch some morning cartoons so he could get ready. And if he took a little longer to get ready in case he saw you, he’d never admit it.
The ride to school was just as easy. Harry didn’t have to get out to take Arlo in but he was lucky enough to see you walking to the building. “Good morning Ms.Honey!” he called out to you, waving his hand. Waving back at him and giving him a welcoming smile, you said hello back to him, softly giggling at his goofy smile. “Hope to see Gemma and You tonight at the open house!” you said, getting a nod from him.
“Wouldn’t miss it.” he confidently said, making your smile bigger.
“Have a good day Harry.” giving him a small departing wave, he returned it, “You too.” he called back.
Bringing Arlo’s stuff back to Gemma’s house, Harry let himself in, surprised to see Gemma already awake. “I thought you’d sleep in.” he said, setting the bag down on the couch.
“I ended up going to bed after I texted you last night. I apparently needed to sleep more than I thought.” Gemma told him, pouring herself another cup of coffee. She looked a lot more rested and calm, easing Harry’s worry if things might be too much for her.
“Well anytime you need help I’m always willing to take him.” Harry said, grabbing his own mug from the cabinet and making himself some coffee. “Oh! Arlo has an Open House tonight at his school.” Harry said, mixing in the sugar and cream to his coffee.
“Fuck, I’m so glad you reminded me. I totally forgot.” Gemma said, pinching the bridge of her nose and squeezing her eyes shut. “I swear I’m losing it.” she mumbled.
“We all do every now and then.” Harry reasoned. “Ms.Honey actually told me about it this morning. Said she hopes to see us there.” Harry was now facing Gemma, taking a sip of his coffee.
“Us huh?” Gemma said with a smug grin.
Harry rolled his eyes, “I don’t have to go if you don’t want me to.” he huffed in a pouty manner.
Gemma chuckled, “Don’t pout like I just kicked you. You can come.” she assured.
Later that evening Harry, Gemma, and Arlo headed back to the school. Harry was carrying two trays of cookies in a plastic grocery bag, much to the amusement of Gemma.
“You know we didn’t have to bring anything right?” Gemma said, getting Arlo out of the car and walking towards the school entrance, Harry right behind them.
He shrugged, “Somebody’s gotta be the teacher’s pet.” he said, making Gemma laugh.
“Welcome guys! Head over to Arlo’s desk and make sure you grab the packet I have there for you. And enjoy socializing with the other parents.” your cheery voice making butterflies swarm in Harry’s stomach.
“I brought these for a snack if anyone wants them” Harry said, handing you the bag.
Gently placing your hand over your heart, you couldn’t help but ‘awe’ vocally at him. “Aren’t you just the sweetest? I’ll set them out, thank you!” taking the bag from him, you set them out on an open desk.
Gemma elbowed Harry to get his attention, giving him a thumbs up, making him roll his eyes despite the smile on his face and the soft blush on his cheeks.
You floated around the classroom talking with other parents, letting them become more acquainted with you and answer any questions they may have. Harry watched you, mesmerized by how easily you talked with the parents and eased any worries they had about their kids. You were a natural at this and it was clear to him how strong your passion was for teaching your class.
Feeling someone looking at you, your eyes scanned the room till they locked with Harry’s. He quickly looked away, and tried to pretend he was in the conversation Gemma was having with another Mom. Shaking your head and giggling, you made your way over to Arlo’s desk.
“It’s so nice to see you two again. How are things going so far with Arlo?” you asked, now having both Gemma and Harry’s attention.
“Well, they’re going. Mornings are hard for him and I.” Gemma said, glancing from Arlo to you.
“I’m sorry to hear that. I’m not much of a morning person either.” you sympathized. “You’re doing a great job though. He had some extra energy this morning so whatever you did differently made a big difference to his typically quiet attitude I see.” Harry puffed out his chest with pride while Gemma rolled her eyes.
“That was all me.” Harry said proudly.
You looked at him with an impressed expression, “Well bravo. I enjoyed his extra energy this morning. It was well needed to perk up the rest of the class. He had everyone ready to have fun today.” you praised.
Harry’s heart swelled with pride, “Guess more sleepovers are in our future Bub.” Harry said to Arlo, making him bounce happily in his seat.
You chuckled, moving your gaze from Arlo back to Harry and Gemma, “Did any of you have any questions for me?”. Gemma shook her head ‘no’ while you could sense Harry hesitating.
“Um, would I be allowed to volunteer to help with field trips and school events?” he asked.
You happily nodded, “Of course! We can always use more volunteers!” you exclaimed. “Whenever we have something planned there will always be a note sent home about it. Just reach out and let me know if you’re able to help.” you encouraged and he nodded.
“I like those little honeycomb signs you have hanging by the board. I didn’t notice them last time.” Harry said, pointing to some of the encouraging phrases you had hung around the room in honeycomb clusters.
The phrases he pointed to repeatedly gave examples of the power of the word ‘yet’. This doesn’t make sense YET. I do not understand this YET. I can’t do this YET. This does not work YET. I don’t know how YET. “Add the word yet to the end of your sentence and you can do anything you set your mind to.” Harry read aloud.
You smiled, looking from the walk back to him, “I’m glad you like it. The way we speak to our kiddos can make a huge difference. A lot of the time it just takes a simple word to turn things around.” you said, not knowing how much that resonated with Harry and Gemma after the night they had with Arlo. You made it seem so effortless and easy to navigate.
“Ms. Honey, you’re an answered prayer.” Gemma told you, trying to express how thankful she was without getting too personal.
Looking down at the floor, you smiled bashfully before looking back up at them, “I’m always here to help if you need it.” you said, wanting to acknowledge the unspoken words between you both without directly saying anything. “It takes a village after all.” you pointed out, laughing as Harry threw his hands up.
“See I told you!” he exclaimed to Gemma.
“Shut up before I make you take him again tonight.” Gemma half threatened, smirking at Harry’s ruffle state.
“Pft, fine. He likes my oatmeal better anyways. Ain’t that right Bub!” Harry said.
Arlo nodded, giving a confident “Yes!” in response.
You couldn’t help but giggle at the interaction “I don’t blame you Arlo. Oatmeal is an awesome breakfast choice when made by the right person.” you said to him, looking over to Harry and giving him a wink.
Harry blushed once again, feeling like a silly teenager doing all this innocent but playful flirting. “I’ll make sure he comes again tomorrow in an excited mood.” Harry said, ruffling Arlo’s hair.
Smiling at him, you nodded, “I look forward to it.”

The gentle chime of a wake up alarm greeted Gemma before the sun could. Reaching for her phone she blindly pressed her finger around to turn it off, groaning when she couldn’t get it on the first try. It was seven in the morning, which was far too early for Gemma to function after only four hours of sleep. Draping her arm over her face and sighing, she searched deep down for the energy to get up and move. She couldn’t sleep last night because she was too busy creating fake scenarios in her head about Arlo’s first day at school. Now it was here. In a few hours she will be leaving her little, no, big boy in a building he doesn’t know with people he doesn’t know. It scared her knowing from her own school experience what could go down. Just like all the other parents she would put on a brave face and not let her son see her worries.
Pushing herself out of bed, she dragged herself down stairs to the kitchen. The need for caffeine being her motivation to start the day. Just as she was about to pull the coffee down from the cabinet there was a rhythmic knock on her door followed by it being unlocked.
“Good morning!” Harry called out, walking through the doorway. He was far too chipper for Gemma right now but she was glad Harry was there,
“Morning.” She grumbled.
Following the sound of Gemma’s voice, Harry appeared in the kitchen entryway but not empty handed. In one arm he held a box of donuts and in the other a drink carrier with two coffees and an apple juice.
Harry’s smile dropped to a small frown when he saw the state of Gemma. Setting down the donuts and drinks, he walked over to Gemma and pulled her into a tight hug. “Everything will be okay Gem.” he softly assured her.
Gemma sighed once more, returning the tight embrace and closing her eyes, “I know. Thank you Harry.” She replied, patting his shoulder as they pulled away from each other.
“Drink your coffee and get some donuts, I’ll go wake up Arlo and bring him down for breakfast.” Harry then instructed, pointing from the food back to Gemma before he turned to go get his nephew.
Gemma wordlessly followed his instructions, sitting at the table and waiting for Harry and Arlo to come back down.
Knocking softly on Arlo’s door, Harry pushed it open, smiling at his nephew who was already sitting up and wide awake. “Well good morning!” Harry greeted, smiling at him.
Arlo yawned, pushing the covers off of him and got out of bed, walking over to Harry and grabbing his hand.
Harry gave his hand a soft squeeze, “I got donuts and apple juice for you downstairs with Mumma. Are you hungry?” he asked.
Receiving a nod in response, he led Arlo downstairs to the dining room where Gemma was.
He let go of Harry’s hand and walked over to Gemma, climbing up into her lap and laying against her chest. Gemma was quick to wrap him up in her arms and hold him, enjoying the loving Arlo was giving her this early in the morning.
Harry left them to have their moment, silently bringing back the apple juice and a donut, along with his own food and coffee. He sat across from them, enjoying the silence himself as it was a rarity in Gemma’s home.
Gemma kissed the top of Arlo’s head that was resting on her shoulder, gently brushing her fingers through his hair as she softly spoke to him, “Harry brought you a donut and apple juice Bub. You should eat before we get ready for school.”
Gemma was happy that Arlo was food motivated, sitting up from where he rested against his Mum and reaching for the food that sat in front of him. Happily eating his donut, Harry couldn’t help but smile at him. His role today was to be Gemma’s emotional support beam. Though he would never admit it, he was feeling emotional about it as well.
“What time is it?” Gemma asked him, sipping on her coffee.
Touching the screen on his phone, Harry read out the time illuminated before him, “7:43 am. We should probably leave here at 8:30.”
After finding out the name of Arlo’s school, Harry drove by it one day just to see what it looked like and how far it was from Gemma’s house, “If we hit the lights just right it’ll take us fifteen minutes to get there.”
Gemma nodded, watching Arlo sip on his juice, “Want to go get dressed Bub? We got to head out soon.”
Nodding excitedly, Arlo sat down his drink and jumped off of Gemma’s lap, running to his room giggling. “I’ll make his lunch while you get him dressed.” Harry said, getting up and heading to the kitchen himself.
Nodding at Harry’s retreating frame, she stood up and followed Arlo to his bedroom. Getting dressed was a fairly easy task since Arlo had to wear a uniform. Gemma compromised a little and let him wear his Spider-Man socks(Thanks Brad) since they were favored over the plain black ones. And Gemma didn’t want the first day of school to go up in flames over socks.
“Pick your battles Gemma.” She would hear her Mother’s voice in her head when moments like these flared up.
“Okay Bub let's brush our hair and teeth.” She said, standing straight and guiding him to the bathroom. To save on time, she decided to brush her teeth with him and throw her hair into a low messy bun after she brushed through Arlo’s. “Okay go hang out with Harry or watch TV while I get dressed.” Gemma instructed after wiping away some stray toothpaste from Arlo’s face.
“Otay Mumma!.” Arlo said, kissing Gemma’s cheek and running out of the bathroom.
After getting dressed and feeling presentable to be around parents and teachers, she came back to the living room to see Arlo sitting on the couch, apple juice bottle in his hand while he watched television.
Backtracking to the kitchen, Gemma found Harry scrolling through his phone. “What did you pack for lunch?” Gemma asked, leaning against the counter across from him.
“A sandwich, chips, and a gogurt. I also filled up his water bottle and put everything in his backpack.” Harry said proudly.
“Awesome, should we head out now? I want to get some pictures for Mum in his classroom.” Gemma said, glancing at the time on her phone.
“Cool!”, “Okay Bub turn off the TV it’s time to go!” Harry called out.
Arlo turned off the TV and grabbed his backpack that sat next to him on the couch, meeting Gemma and Harry by the door to the garage.
Just like Harry had hoped, the drive was only fifteen minutes and they arrived with plenty of time to take photos or even look around. Parking the car along the side of the road, Gemma sighed, unbuckling her seatbelt, “Alright you two let’s go inside.”
As they walked inside the building, Arlo grabbed onto Gemma’s hand, feeling nervous around the large group of people. “Hi there, can you help me find the class Arlo Styles will be in?” Gemma asked the girl sitting at the front desk.
Nodding, she flipped through some papers, looking for his name, “Oh, he’s got Ms.Honey! She’s down this hall and on the right. She’s got a big beehive decorated outside of her classroom, you can’t miss it.” she cheerfully told them.
“Thank you.” Gemma and Harry said in unison, making her giggle.
Guiding Arlo down the hall with them, they found the classroom pretty easily. A giant beehive was on the door with a couple bees flying out of it, to the left of the door was a garden with blooming sunflowers. Each student’s name in the middle to represent the class.
Harry smiled at the cut out letters that hung above the beehive, ‘The Best Place To Bee’ he read to himself. “Okay, you two stand in front of the door and I’ll take a photo.” Harry said, pulling out his phone and opening up his camera.
Gemma and Arlo moved in front of the door, Gemma kneeling next to Arlo who was giving Harry his biggest and best-est smile. Gemma pointed her finger upward to the words on the door and smiled for Harry as well, who snapped several photos so Gemma and their Mum could choose their favorite, “Okay, got it!” Harry said, giving Gemma a thumbs up.
As Gemma stood up, the classroom door opened, startling Gemma and Arlo.
You giggled softly at their surprised expressions, propping the door open. “Sorry for scaring you two. Come on in and get settled. Welcome to my hive!”, gesturing your arms to the room and stepping out of the way.
“Thank you.” Gemma said, pushing Arlo forward so he would walk with her. “This is Arlo.” Gemma introduced her son, “I’m his Mum, Gemma, and the deer in the headlights over there is his Uncle Harry.” gesturing her thumb back at Harry who indeed looked like he was stunned suddenly.
You smiled at him and gave him a small wave, turning back to Gemma and Arlo. “Well it’s so lovely to meet some new faces! Arlo, would you like to see where your desk is?” you asked, leaning your hands against your knees so you could be more on his level. Giving a shy nod, you stood up and gestured for them to follow you over to his desk. His name written neatly on a desk marker, along with a coloring sheet and a stuffed bee.
“The bee is his to take home. Everyone gets one as a little welcome gift. And I got coloring sheets laid out to make departure somewhat easier and hopefully prevent a lot of breakdowns. Throughout the day.” you explained. “Over there are cubbies where he can put his backpack, lunch box, and jacket. I do recommend keeping a spare change of clothes there just in case we have any accidents.”
Gemma looked around, trying to take it all in, Harry doing the same while also trying to steal glances at you.
You could tell the whole experience was overwhelming to them. It wasn’t out of the ordinary for the first day of kindergarten to be emotional not only for students but parents as well. “Here, let me take his backpack for him and I’ll let you get settled. I’ll be outside in the hall if you need me okay?”
Gemma nodded, thankful for the offer to have a moment to soak in everything. Taking Arlo’s backpack off of him, she handed it to her and helped Arlo get settled at his desk, Harry taking candid photos of them for later.
Kneeling on the other side of Arlo’s chair across from Gemma, he grabbed the bee, squeezing it gently before offering it to Arlo who happily took it, making his version of buzzing sounds.
Harry laughed, looking over to Gemma who had a soft smile on her face as she watched Arlo.
“I’m going to step out in the hall and let you two have this moment.” Harry said, standing up.
“Thank you.” Gemma said, giving Harry a thankful smile before turning her attention back to Arlo.
Making his way out to the hall, he saw you standing there, greeting parents and other students that would pass by.
You noticed him standing there and smiled at him, “Is everything okay in there?” you asked.
Harry quickly nodded, finding a spot against the wall next to you. “Yeah, I’m just letting them have their time together before we have to leave. Gemma is having a hard time with this.” he explained.
You nodded, leaning back against the wall with him, “And what about you?” you asked, crossing your arms over your stomach and looking over at him.
“Huh?” he asked, confusedly looking back at you.
“Are you handling this okay?” you clarified.
Harry took a deep breath, looking up to the ceiling for a moment then to the wall ahead of you both. “It’s hard. I’m used to being with him all day, everyday. I don’t know what I’m going to do now that he will be here most of the day.” Harry admitted, looking back to you with a small slant of his lips.
You returned the slanted facial expression, “You’ll find things to do. Take this time for yourselves and embrace it. He’s in an environment where he’s learning and safe. Take that time to take care of yourselves as well.” Your calm reassuring voice helped ease the battle he was having with himself mentally. If he was feeling guilty about leaving Arlo here, he could only imagine how Gemma was feeling.
“So, do they call you Ms.Honey because you’re so sweet?” he asked in a teasing tone.
Smiling at you when you laughed in response, your cheeks dusted in blush. “Yes, actually.” you mumbled, looking down at your shoes.
“Then I know Arlo is in good hands.” Harry told you, with a sure nod of his head.
You both smiled at each other, getting lost in the moment till another parent walked up and began talking to you. Giving Harry an apologetic look, you turned back to the parents, leading them and their child into the classroom.
Harry leaned his head back against the wall when you were out of eyesight. Flirting with Arlo’s teacher the first day of school? Real smooth Harry.
“Ready to go?” Gemma asked, walking out of the classroom.
“Yeah, is Arlo okay?” Harry asked, looking over at him.
“Yeah he’s coloring with his desk neighbor and in his own little world.” Gemma chuckled, making Harry laugh too.
Throwing his arm over Gemma’s shoulder, they started their walk back to the car. “Want me to come with you to pick him up later?” Harry asked, walking over to the passenger side of the car while Gemma went to the drivers.
“Yeah, I think Arlo will be happy to see you. Ms.Honey might be happy too.” Gemma teased, starting the car.
Harry froze mid way while buckling his seatbelt and looked over at Gemma, “What?” he asked, trying to play dumb.
Gemma laughed, “Please you both looked like love struck teenagers.” She said, calling you both out.
“Whatever.” Harry mumbled. “I’ll come with you though.”.
Dismissal time couldn’t come fast enough. Gemma knew if anything happened the school would call her but she was still anxious to get her boy home. “Can you drive faster?” Gemma complained, bouncing her leg anxiously.
“We’re five minutes away Gemma chill.” Harry scolded, pulling into the turn lane.
Gemma rolled her eyes, turning to look out the window till they finally pulled into the pick up line. When Arlo got in the car, Gemma took his backpack and opened it, pulling out his binder. Pulling out the stuffed bee, she threw it at Harry’s head, the stuffed animal bouncing off of it and into his lap.
Looking down at it Harry smiled thinking of you as he lifted his gaze back to the road in front of him.
“It was so lovely meeting you today Gemma and Harry. I look forward to teaching Arlo, who is bright as the sun and super kind to all of his new friends. We have lots of fun things planned this year and I hope you can join us for some of it! Contact me if you need anything. –Ms.Honey.” Gemma read out loud. “She even drew a little bumblebee. How cute.” She smiled at the note.
Harry smiled too. You really were as sweet as honey.

Sunday;
Sunday mornings are Harry’s favorite day of the week. Sitting with Gemma at her dining room table with a hot cup of tea in front of him. He watched Gemma scoot about through her kitchen to make Arlo breakfast.
Scooby Doo was on the TV in the living room for Arlo to watch while he played with his legos. His occasional giggles would make Harry smile a little brighter.
“You’re daydreaming again.” Gemma said while flipping a pancake on the electric griddle.
Shifting his gaze from the window to his sister, he looked at her bashfully, then glanced back down to his tea, “Sorry. You know it’s hard to stop once I start.”
A plate of pancakes was sat down in front of him along with a bottle of syrup, engulfing his senses with the sweet and buttery smell.
“Eat. It’ll perk you up some.” Gemma ordered, giving him a small smile.
Rolling his eyes, Harry picked up his fork and poured some syrup on the pancakes. Using his fork to cut them up and eat them while he slowly sipped on his tea in between bites.
“So, what’s got you in such a daze?” Gemma asked, plating up more pancakes for her and Arlo.
Harry hesitated to answer, nervous about how Gemma would react. He pushed the syrup around on his plate, dragging his fork through it as a distraction while he built up the nerve. “You remember a few weeks ago when we all helped with the field day?” he asked, glancing up at his sister.
Setting the plates down on the table, Gemma leaned against the table with one hand while propping the other on her hip, “Of course I do. What about it?” she asked, arching an eyebrow suspiciously.
“When everyone left, it was just me and Honey. She noticed my face was sunburned and pulled out some aloe to rub on my face. Uh, well…I might have made a move on her and we kissed.” Harry rambled, blushing madly.
Gemma stared at him with a mixture of astoundment and unsurprised. “Well for one I’m shocked you had your first kiss in her classroom, but I’m also not shocked after that little water balloon fight you both had. The tension is thick enough for a knife to cut.”
“I’ve never had a first kiss like this Gemma.” he sighed, setting down his fork. “There were fireworks. Not sparks. Fireworks. I’m positive she felt them too.”
“Sounds like Harry is in loveee.” Gemma teased, cutting up Arlo’s pancakes for him, then calling him to the table.
Harry felt a giant knot in his stomach. Love. That was a big word to use for somebody he wasn’t officially dating. It’s not something he can confidently say he’s ever experienced to know the signs either.
“Harry?”
“What?”
“Don’t overthink it.” Gemma said, sitting next to him and starting to eat her own pancakes. “By the way! Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week. The flier is hanging on the fridge if you want to look at it.” Pointing to the fridge with his fork.
Glancing at the fridge, Harry saw the piece of paper Gemma was talking about. “Did you plan on doing anything?” Harry asked, looking back to Gemma.
“Of course.” Gemma said as if it was obvious. “There might be some days you can do too. So give it a look when you’re done.”
Quickly finishing up his breakfast, he took his plate and mug to the sink, rinsing it off before turning to the fridge to read over the theme for each day. “Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday seem the most open for me.” patting his pants to make sure he had his wallet and phone, he looked back over to Gemma, “I’m running to the store to pick up a few things. Do you need anything?” he asked, pulling his phone out to snap a picture of the paper.
Amused by Harry’s sudden urgency, she shook his head, “We’re fine. Go buy your gifts for your girl.” she dismissed with a wave of her hand.

Monday:
We’re Muffin Without You!
As all your students entered the room, they quickly came up to you with excitement to give you the treats their parents had picked out. You assure them that you would look through each gift at the end of the day and that they’ve made you feel extremely loved today.
The day came and went with ease, not having any major hiccups to tend to with your students. Easy days like these were always cherished in your classroom.
As dismissal came around and your kids slowly left, you leaned back in your chair and sighed. The silence welcomed you in a warm embrace till it was interrupted by a soft knock on your door. Looking up to see Harry standing there with a soft smile on his face as he admired you.
“Sorry for interrupting your down time. I just wanted to personally drop this off to you.” he said, holding up a grocery bag.
Beckoning him inside, you sat up in your chair, “Well bring it here then.” you said, making grabby hands for the bag.
Harry laughed, walking over to you and handing you the bag, which you accepted with glee.
Opening the bag, you glanced at its contents and gasped, pulling out the container of banana nut muffins.  “For the sweet to my nut.” you read the writing scribbled on top of the container. Snorting with laughter, you covered your mouth in embarrassment.
Harry looked at you amused, “You like that?” he asked, trying not to laugh himself.
“I love it.” you assured him, popping open the container to grab a muffin. “Banana nut is my favorite.” taking a bite out of the muffin you couldn’t help but moan, “Oh my God these are amazing!” you raved, looking at the brand he bought. “I’ll have to remember this next time I go grocery shopping!”
Puffing his chest out proudly, Harry smiled, brushing off his shoulder “Yeah, not to brag but I’ve got good taste.” he shrugged.
You rolled your eyes fondly, “Well I appreciate your good taste. Thank you.” setting down your muffin, and leaning over your desk to press a soft kiss to his cheek.
His green eyes looked back into your own as you pulled away, an emotion swimming in them that you couldn’t quite put a finger on identifying.
Gently caressing your cheek, he then softly spoke, “There’s more to come for you this week darling. I hope you expect to be spoiled.” giving a small smile and a playful wink, he kissed your cheek in return. “I’ll call you tomorrow.”
“Okay.” you softly said in return, leaning into his touch.
Giving you a final kiss to your forehead, he said goodbye, smiling at your gentle gentle echo of a farewell as he walked out the classroom door.

Wednesday:
We’re WILD About Our Staff!- Thank a staff member with their favorite flower, or a gift/hand made picture of their favorite animal.
“Oh my goodness! Thank you so much Arlo!” you gushed as he handed you the stuffed lion. Flashbacks to the zoo played through your head as you admired the small stuffed animal.
Arlo giggled at your reaction, “Zoo!” he said, clearly having the same thoughts as you.
You nodded enthusiastically, “Yes! That’s exactly what I thought of too. Thank you Bub.” The nickname has grown on you since hearing Harry speak it so fondly.
As you were in the middle of your reading lesson, there was a knock on the door. Pausing where you were, you walked over and opened it. Nancy stood there with a giddy smile on her face and an arm full of wildflowers, “special delivery!” she said, handing them off to you.
“Oh, wow!” you said, cradling the vase in your arms. “Who are they from?” you asked, looking from the flowers to her.
Nancy smiled at you, “Oh, just some guy. Called himself Mr.Honey.” she winked, turning to walk back to the front desk.
Sighing and shaking your head, you gently closed the door and walked the flowers back to your desk. Some of the boys making teasing remarks about you having a crush which just made you laugh.
Adjusting the vase to sit perfectly on your desk, you sniffed the flowers, humming happily at the sweet smell. Pulling the small card out of the bouquet you opened it to read the note inside.
‘A queen bee as beautiful as you deserves flowers just as stunning and radiant. When you look at these and think of how pretty they are, I want you to know that’s how I feel when I look at you. -Mr.Honey.’
“Who are they from Ms.Honey?!” Sean called out, bouncing in his chair. The other students looked up at you with wide curious eyes.
Laughing, you shook your head. Of course this had all of their attention and you couldn’t blame them. If you saw somebody get handed a beautiful vase of flowers you would be nosy too. “It’s a secret admirer.” you teased, tucking the note into your desk away from their prying eyes. “Let’s focus back on our reading okay?” you decided to redirect, going back to the front of the classroom and continuing your lesson.
Later that afternoon you called Harry to personally thank him for the flowers. You made sure they arrived home with care and now have them sitting in the window sill of your kitchen that’s right above your sink.
“I was expecting you.” he answered, causing you to giggle.
“I wanted to tell you about these beautiful flowers I got today.”
“Flowers? Somebody’s got a crush.” he teased.
You couldn’t help but play along. “Yeah, he calls himself Mr.Honey and thinks I’m beautiful.”
“He sounds extremely charming. You should give him a chance.”
“I think I will. He’s pretty cute and goofy himself.”
Harry laughed, and it was then that you decided you wanted to make him laugh till his stomach hurt. Till he was laughing so hard he was silent with tears streaming down his face. Chest heaving as he tried to catch his breath.
Butterflies invaded your stomach and your heart skipped a beat at the thought.
“I’m glad you loved the flowers Honey. By the way, you can plant them in your garden and it’s supposed to attract honey bees.”
Placing your hand over your heart, your bottom lip pouted outward, “Harry, that’s so thoughtful. I can’t believe how much thought you put into this.”
“It’s what you do for those you l-...really like.” he caught himself. Pinching the bridge of his nose and scrunching his face as he cringed at the almost slip up.
Thankfully you didn’t catch it though, only smiling and shaking your head as you admired the flowers. “Well, I’m glad the feeling is mutual.” the both of you were blushing like crazy on both ends of the phone. This phase took the both of you back to your youth, being up on the phone late at night with your crush, whispering cute things to each other, and refusing to hang up.
“Oh, guess what Arlo gave me today!” you said, suddenly remembering the cute gift.
“I can only imagine.” Harry chuckled. “What did he give you?”
“A stuffed lion.” you said proudly. “It reminded him of the zoo so he wanted me to have it.” picking up the stuffed animal, you held it close against your chest. “I adore that kid.”
Harry smiled at the memory, not a doubt in his mind that Arlo saw the lion and threw a fit until Gemma would buy it for you. “I adore him too. He can be off the wall but he’s a sweet kid.”
“He really is. I don’t think I would have signed on for another two years at the school if it weren’t for him.” Thinking back on the bond you had with your students, they all had their special connection to you, but you couldn’t help but feel drawn to Arlo and favor him a little bit.
“Honey, that's great!” Harry exclaimed, happy to know Arlo will get to see you for two more years.
A soft giggle slipped past your lips, “I thought you’d be happy to hear that.”
“I’m over the moon.” Harry softly said. “I hate to cut this call short but I had an early day and my bed is calling my name. I’ll talk to you tomorrow, yeah?”
“Of course. Go get your beauty sleep.”
“Hmm, Goodnight Honey.”
“Goodnight, Harry.”

Thursday:
Thankful Thursday!- Treat a staff member with a gift card or hand made card!
Overwhelmed was the only word to describe it. Walking into your classroom the next morning, you were greeted by a large basket on your desk full of gifts. Slowly setting down your bag, you stood over the basket and admired it. Spotting a gift tag, you gently opened it to see who it was from.
To: Ms.Honey
From: Your Worker Bees
All the parents had gotten together to put together this gift basket for you from the class. You didn’t know what you did in a past life to get such an amazing class.
Pulling open the ribbon, you removed the plastic wrapping to see what all was inside. Mixed with the cute gifts were a few cards as well. You couldn’t wait to read them when you got home this afternoon. One of the moms made you a custom t-shirt, another personally made you a tumbler cup, some of the dad’s even pitched in a home depot gift card to be funny.
As if you couldn’t get any more emotional, each kid came in and handed you a homemade card they did themselves. The love these kids have for you, the impact you’ve made in such a short amount of time, is why you love this job. They’ve given you a purpose in life to live and you were determined to make them feel that love right back.
So, as a thank you for being such an awesome group of kids, you made popcorn and watched movies all day. Nothing fueled your happiness like the sounds of them happily chattering to one another or laughing during the film. Work could definitely wait.
Later that evening you sat down and decided to read the cards from the parents. You’d held it together pretty well until you got to Gemma’s card.
Ms. Honey,
This week is all about you and rightfully so. Words can not describe how thankful I am to have you as Arlo’s teacher. You’ve helped ease every worry I have, answering all my emails, and even my texts. The bond you and Arlo have is something I would have never imagined. He’s learned so much from you. Things I would have never had the patience to teach him. You make him feel safe and that’s all I could ever want for my child around another adult. If it wasn’t for you(and Harry honestly) I’m sure I’d be one short mishap to a ward. Thank you for all you’ve done and continue to do. My family has become infinitely happier since you’ve buzzed into our lives. You’re an amazing teacher, and an amazing friend to us parents.
Yours sweetly, Gemma
Ps- Sorry for the bee pun Pss- Not really though

hi love!
i just read your newest piece and wanted to quickly pop in to say that the phrase ‘special needs child’ is phasing out and isn’t greatly appreciated within the disabled community. in the professional field and in a community sense, it is preferable to use ‘child with complex needs’ or simply ‘child with a disability’/‘disabled child’ depending on if the person prefers identity first or person first language!
just sending this in to share this info as it’s very important to me to educate others in my line of work. love love love your writing 💛🍯
While I really appreciate your input I as well, have worked as a caregiver for a adult with special needs for 10 years now. I work closely with many children/adults who have disabilities. Not once has anyone ever had an issue with me referring to them or their child as having special needs. It might be phased out where you work but it’s not where I’m at.
Also, as someone on the spectrum MYSELF I would rather someone refer to me as special needs. It’s all about personal preference and that’s the language I have chosen for my story.
Thank you for reading and enjoying!
