PCB welcomes 20 cricketers for pre-season camp at NCA

LAHORE – Fourteen halfway contracted and six extra men cricketers have been welcome to go to a pre-season camp, which will begin here from August 19 at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Following two days of wellness testing, the 17-day molding camp will start on August 22 and keep running until September 7. As the procedure for the arrangement of the players bolster workforce has been started, previous Pakistan Cricket Board commander Misbah-ul-Haq, with the help of the NCA instructing staff, will create the preparation program and ignore of the camp until the enlistment procedure has finished up. During the pre-season camp, the players will experience handling drills and net sessions, alongside wellness and other cricketing exercises. The camp has been set up to set up the players for an aggressive and testing household and worldwide cricket season, which is relied upon in any case the renowned Quaid-e-Azam Trophy from 12 September. Aside from thirty one Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 5 star matches and a variety of residential white ball coordinates in affiliation to the National T20 Cup and West Pakistan Cup One-Day Tournament, the West Pakistan cricket group is booked to play six World Test Championship Tests, three ODIs and nine T20Is in the approaching season. Umar Akmal didn’t show remorse for failing to report fixing approaches, says PCB disciplinary panel head

Umar Akmal did not seem prepared to show remorse nor did he seek an apology for failing to report corrupt approaches, chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s disciplinary panel has observed in his detailed judgement after imposing a three-year ban on the temperamental batsman.

Justice (retired) Fazal-e-Miran Chauhan submitted his detailed judgement on the case to the Pakistan Cricket Board, which made it public on Friday on its official website.

Akmal was found guilty of two charges under the PCB Anti-Corruption Code, rendering him ineligible for cricket activities till February 19, 2023.

“It appears that he (Umar Akmal) is not prepared to show remorse and seek apology, make admission that he failed to fulfill his responsibility under Anti-Corruption Code…,” Justice Chauhan said in the judgement.

“…rather he tried to take refuge under the pretext that in the past whenever any such approaches were made, the matter was reported by him,” he said.

Akmal was provisionally suspended on the eve of the Pakistan Super League. He was charged with two breaches of Article 2.4.4 of the PCB Anti-Corruption Code in two unrelated incidents on March 17.

On April 9, the PCB referred the matter to the disciplinary committee after the batsman opted not to request for a hearing before the Anti-Corruption Tribunal.

“The charge as framed is proved and the participant (Umar Akmal) has rendered himself liable to be punished for breach of Article 2.4.4,” Justice Chauhan said.

“It is also admitted by him (Umar Akmal) that he failed to report the approaches and invitation to the PCB Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Department, as required by the PCB Code, Article 2.4.4.

“In view of the above charge as framed, stood proven and participant has rendered himself to be punished under Article 6.2 of the PCB Code,” he added.

Akmal is the younger brother of former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal, who played 53 Tests, 58 T20s, and 157 ODIs for Pakistan, and cousin of current captain Babar Azam.

The right-hander, who last played for Pakistan in October, has featured in 16 Tests, 121 ODIs and 84 T20s, scoring 1003, 3194 and 1690 runs respectively.

Akmal promised a lot after making a hundred in New Zealand on his Test debut, but failed to live up to the high expectations that came with some fine performances early in his career.

Constant run-ins with the authorities also marred his stop-start career.

Akmal had earlier escaped a PCB ban in February for allegedly making crude remarks to a trainer during a fitness test at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.

Misbah-ul-Haq: Pakistan’s Most Successful Captain Bows out Historically, Pakistan cricket has been defined by its unpredictability. The talent has always been there, but there have been moments of madness interspersed with moments of magic at fairly regular intervals. And it was one such moment of madness that, paradoxically, gave Pakistan the man who defines predictability. In 2010, when Pakistan went off on its fateful tour of England, Misbah-ul-haq Khan Niazi was not even among the 40 probables shortlisted for the Test team. Despite an excellent first-class career, the middle-order batsman had been cast aside. Tariq Saeed, a leading journalist and radio broadcaster, recollects meeting a distraught Misbah outside the National Cricket Academy in Lahore, where he hinted at retirement. Saeed recalls Misbah saying: If I am not even good enough to be among the top 40 cricketers in the country, I might as well call it a day. Misbah was greeted on the field by the West Indian players’ guard of honour. (Photo: WICB) Just a couple of months later, everything had changed. Salman Butt, the young captain and his two best bowlers, Mohammed Asif and young Mohammed Amir, had been caught in a spot-fixing sting, and the Pakistan Cricket Board, looking to make a clean break, decided to anoint Misbah as the new skipper. It was, like a lot of decisions made at the time, clutching at straws. He was 36 at the time and had played only 19 Tests in 9 years. For all intents and purposes it was a desperate, short-term measure. Seven years later, as Misbah bows out, he is Pakistan’s most successful Test captain, and the decision to elevate him appears almost prescient – the one good thing that happened under the much-maligned, then PCB chairman Ijaz Butt. He wasn’t a popular choice, by any means, due largely to his infamous scoop shot off Joginder Sharma that handed India the first ever ICC World T20 crown. People forgot the fact that he was largely responsible for getting them into the final and in a position to win it in the first place.
