hey. wdym your school didn't have any art or music?

i went to a vocational high school and we had no art or music program. we also didn’t have electives up until junior year, but the ‘electives’ were just four engineering classes, of which you could take one. and then in senior year we also had electives, but again, the electives were either ap chem, ap physics, or ap bio (you had to pick one), a fourth year of a language, ap stat, or a class on current global issues (you had to pick two of these; unless, of course, you weren’t taking a math*, in which case you had to take all of them).

*the only reason you wouldn’t be taking a math is if you had taken ap calc bc as a junior** and gotten lower than an a. if you got an a, you were forced into multivariable calculus. no, there was no way to avoid this beyond dropping out. and yes, people did drop out because of this.

**everyone who had already taken geometry before freshman year was required to take ap calc bc as juniors, no matter their grade in precalc. if you had to take geometry during freshman year, you would be forced to take either ap calc ab or bc in senior year — ab if you got lower than an a in precalc, bc if you got an a. but because of the pandemic, everyone in my class (i had to take geometry in freshman year) got put into bc.

this was a public school, i paid no money for it. the education was genuinely shit but it’s also considered one of the best public high schools in the us (at least, that’s what they told us).

fun fact when i was in 5th grade kids in my class were fucking OBSESSED with the narwhal song. however they were exponentially more obsessed with the song barbie girl; this obsession reached a crescendo when entire groups of children were breaking out in song in the middle of class to annoy our teachers and the song was officially banned.
