A thought regarding Gargoyles and stone sleep.

Stone sleep heals a lot, but I don’t think it heals everything.

Hudson is blind in one eye after a fight with the Archmage, and he didn’t regenerate a functioning eye after a daytime stone sleep. He hit a rock falling down during his fight and the trauma probably broke his eye socket, crushed his eyeball and ripped the retina loose, so something was severed and couldn’t regenerate via stone sleep. Hudson moves his damaged eye normally along with his unharmed one, but he can’t see out of it.

So it stands to reason that if a gargoyle has a totally severed limb (no tendons or anything holding it on, the entire limb is gone) or sustains a complete spinal cord transaction injury, stone sleep would heal the stump and not regrow a new limb and it would knit the broken spine and heal the severed bits of spinal cord without fusing the severed ends of the spinal cord back together. So that gargoyle might still need a wheelchair and possibly a ventilator to survive.

Imagine how disabling it would be if a gargoyle lost one or both of their wings like that.

A human might look at them and go “but you ain’t disabled, you can still walk up stairs.”

The gargoyle will look at the human and say “One who cannot glide will never understand my situation just as you, one who walks, cannot understand the situation of someone who uses a wheelchair. I am limited to where I can walk, where I can climb, where I can leap and utilizing other air transport to get places my brethren can reach without accommodation. Isn’t that a disability, human?”

This brings about even more interesting questions...

Why don’t piercings seal up? Maybe keeping jewelry in is the key? Does a gargoyle re-pierce whatever part they wear jewelry in? (If it’s a genital piercing, ouch!)

What if a gargoyle was bitten by a rabid animal and turned to stone at dawn, would that cure the rabies?

Suppose a gargoyle has the flu, would that heal?

What if they developed a tumor, or a blood / bone marrow cancer like leukemia? Or would stone sleep prevent that from even happening in the first place?

Would a gargoyle having a fatal heart attack still turn to stone and be fine, or would they wake up just in time to die from it, or would they live to see the sun for the first time and die right there?

What if a gargoyle has a devastating stroke? Does that heal during the day, or do they wake up the next night with all the stroke effects still happening?

What if a gargoyle with epilepsy is having a seizure as the sun rises, will they wake up from stone sleep feeling refreshed or in a post-ictal state?

What if a gargoyle has a shattered leg bone or shattered ribs, will that heal or will they wake up with skeletal issues / nerve / muscle damage?

What about a gargoyle who acquires a traumatic brain injury that requires life support to keep them alive? Stuff like a gunshot to the head, a bad fall from way up high, or some other even that causes hypoxia? Would they wake up from stone sleep fine, or have the issues people with TBIs often face?

What if the gargoyle is brain dead on life support, would they turn to stone at all?

Soooo many questions!

Epiphany? Turning Point?

It seems fitting that a year ago was when this all started to begin and yet here we are a year later and it feels like we’ve found a new beginning all over again. I should probably start at the beginning, but it would take too long to get to this part which is the part I really want to share and actually ties into our little corner of tumblr.

@mastershim69 also lovingly referred to as My Daddy, or Magic Dick (MD) when I’m feeling froggy, and I could have never predicted we’d be here a year ago. Hell, we couldn’t have predicted we’d be in a serious relationship a year ago. Yet here we are, stumbling along in the world of D/s and DD together. We’ve had our fair share of stumbles and failures. We’ve had our fair share of poor communication. But we’ve also had our fair share of epiphanies and turning points. Of glorious satisfaction and enjoyment.

Last night we had another epiphany. It’s funny because I don’t think either of us really thought or felt that anything was lacking. It started with MD “asking” me to go for a walk. Mind you I’ve been stupid sick the last 4-5 days and the last thing in the world I wanted to do was take a walk. I knew he wasn’t really asking. I protested a bit. He knew I was capable and pushed despite my protests. Smiling a little at me letting me know my protest was futile. He told me to go put on pants and real shoes. I asked why I needed either. I was dressed totally appropriately to take a stroll. He said it’s a real walk, not a stroll. When I walked in the house to change I was met by my sister and one of our older children laughing. They looked at me and said how’s your protest going. I felt my cheeks flush and I asked what protest. They replied with, we hear you’re going for a walk. I said this is me going to change in protest.

As I walked up the stairs I realized he was taking some joy in my protest. He was also taking some joy in letting them know I was being made to do something I didn’t really want to do. It made me a bit reflective because I hadn’t noticed previously him taking any joy in my protests and it was a bit bold to let anyone see a glimpse of our dynamic. It’s not something that happens often. I often protest our shower rule. It’s probably one of our strictest rules? Not sure strictest is the right word. MD has a rule that we shower before going to bed. The only exceptions to the rule is if we stay inside literally the entire day, which never happens, and I get one day a year, my birthday, where I get to choose if I shower or not. I can count literally one time where he gave leniency on it. We came home late from a ball game and I nearly begged in exhaustion to take a shower in the morning with a promise to also wash all our linens the following day. I digress, the point is I protest it quite often with playful remarks of “this is me showering in protest”. While he sometimes laughs at me I hadn’t really ever thought he got any joy from my protests. I walked back down the stairs and out the door to shouts of enjoy your walk and giggles behind me.

When we started to walk he made a comment about finding my protest amusing. HE REALLY WAS FINDING JOY IN THIS. And he says he’s not a sadist. As we walked along he said I’ve been considering writing to @instructor144 . I was a bit surprised at first. I have reached out to @amysubmits a few times and he knew that. We listen to the podcast Over The Knee that Amy and @CynicalDom do together. We both follow 144, but I just never really gave it much thought that he’d want to reach out. I asked why and he said well we don’t really have a community here and I’m at this place where I don’t know that I’m doing what I should as your Dom. I just kind of want someone to talk it out with a bit. Now I was thoroughly confused because I am very happy in our dynamic and I feel he is too. Instead of immediately responding with all the reassurances I wanted to respond with, I just asked what is it you feel your not doing or not doing well? We talked the rest of the way and it boiled down to, at least in my head, that he felt he didn’t do enough. Sometimes tasks go unchecked or things become forgotten, but that’s only human. Especially when you have the tribe of children and bustling household that we do.

This is where I mention for those uninitiated, we have 8 children between the two of us; 5 of them live with us full time. My mother who suffers from a TBI also lives with us, as well as my youngest sister who is 18 and recently graduated high school last year. If this isn’t enough, he and I are also both Active Duty Air Force, and because I didn’t think I had enough going on in life, I founded my own 501c3 Animal Rescue that is run 100% of donations and volunteers. As you can probably gather, sometimes, things get lost in the shuffle. Unfortunately that includes our dynamic. We do the best we can within the limits of being human.

Despite giving him reminders and reassurances that I feel he does more than enough, especially within the busy life we live, I encouraged him to reach out, if that’s really what he felt he should do. I can’t help him with the Dom side of things because my brain just simply doesn’t work that way. He was worried that the response he would get back after reaching out might be critical. He said he wouldn’t be upset if it was as the only way to improve is with honesty, even if that means critical honesty. I reminded him that everyone has been new at some point, and the mere mention that he’s concerned it would be critical means he cares enough to be doing this whole messy dynamic the best way we know how and therefore I don’t think the response would be critical. Informative? Yes. Critical? No. He’s just simply not an asshat that deserves criticism. This is where we all need to remember that constructive feedback or criticism is different than being critical just because you can be.

As we got back to the house the conversation somehow took a turn. He offhandedly said to me, “You don’t know how many times I’ve wanted to just call you up to our room.” I knew he could see my puzzled expression by the streetlights, and he said, “like the post you shared to me of Amy’s.” It clicked that he was referring to a post Amy made where CD had called her in to give him a blow job and then stopped her. I asked why he didn’t. I explained that I’d love if he did. He said to me with the sincerest of expressions, “You really would WANT to drop everything to come to me?” Without hesitation I said yes. I could feel my forehead crinkle. Not understanding how he didn’t already know this. I feel I’ve expressed it ten thousand times before. I watched him for a moment before trying to explain. I’m not sure you’ll ever truly understand but there is nothing that satiates me or provides me more pleasure than serving you. You giving me a direct way to do that provides all the warm and fuzzies. He smirked, “Taking a shower provides you warm and fuzzies and satiates you.” I retorted, “That’s not what I mean but yes. As much as I loathe taking a shower at night it’s a very clear representation of serving you. It makes YOU happy therefore even if I don’t like it in the moment I find fulfillment in it.”

The conversation really wasn’t much in the grand scheme of things. It didn’t feel much different than conversations we have had a million times over. Neither of us have ever lived in a dynamic. Before one another neither of us realized we even wanted to live in a dynamic such as this. When it first started I was convinced it was more for me than for him after all I was the one who brought it up. Over and over again, we’ve had nearly identical conversations with him asking me questions to try to determine what it is that I really am wanting. Something was different this time though, it was like this lightbulb of acceptance went off in his head that hadn’t previously. Like he couldn’t understand fully WHY dropping everything for him satiates me or why serving him in ways he sees fit brings me such fulfillment, but he accepted it.

Our conversation was interrupted by kids and family. We talked and joked with them for a while before he made a comment about heading to bed that I knew was also a way of telling me to prepare to go to bed without him saying such. We wrapped up our conversations and he doled out chores that needed to be finished to the kids before they turned in for the night. When we reached the bedroom we stripped as we always do and he turned on our white noise. Even though we do these things every night there was something different. You could feel it. He proceeded to use me in every way he saw fit. Not once did he stop to ask if I needed a break. When I collapsed from multiple orgasms my body giving out under his, he paused a moment to allow me to recover, but he didn’t stop. He told me things and asked me things he had never said before. He watched me drift in and out of euphoria and just kept pushing my limits, trusting in me fully that if we needed to stop I would speak up. He used me well past me being satiated and unable to cum even once more. He used me until HE was completely satiated. We collapsed in a heap with him stroking my hair and we both passed out, he awoke a little bit later and moved to turn out the lights and bundle us up together. He went and got a towel to cover the soaked part of the sheets I was sleeping on. I can’t remember if he kissed me good night or called me his good girl at that point or earlier as it all kind of melds together, but we fell back asleep with him holding me, me feeling totally fulfilled in pleasing and serving him, and him feeling totally fulfilled sexually and by seeing that my limits are for him to push.

We woke up this morning in a different place within our relationship. We can both feel it. It’s exciting and new and we don’t know what doors we’ve opened but we’re excited to find out. It seems that after a year perhaps we both now trust in the other to say Spinach. Time will tell.

Failure is a good thing...What???

In my experience it breeds strength, courage, conviction and belief in oneself!

That's right every step count; even if it leads to failure. Just another learning moment.

Perfection is something we all strive for at one time or another. The error free post, the ultimate cake, meal, artwork, skill, trade or even apparently phone call. We all do our best however our best often isn't always perfect. Success at anything usually requires commitment, a solid plan, consistency, knowledge and a wide variety of skills in order to successfully achieve realistic goals. Usually an optimistic big picture approach and managing daily details are the steps that lead to overall sucess. As humans we fail time and time again, success can seem fleeting and quite elusive at times especially when frustrated.

Failure really is only a complete failure when you give up forever. Like Anthony Bourdane. Suicide ideation is not "normal" behavior or anywhere near healthy thoughts. It's the red flag. It's the failure to thrive while being overwhelmed consistently.

Happiness and joy is available to everyone, regardless of situation or station. It's a choice, another option a better possibility.

It is attainable! Take responsibility for your own happiness!!! Don't let yourself be defeated by one little moment in a bazillion of moments that come in a lifetime! Success and failure are a matter of belief. Stop that degrading story playing in your head, that you'll never be better. Start saying what is easy, what is working; go down that check list if you have to. Never measure your self worth to others. We are all unique while being quite alike too. Weight the positives and agree to improvement on the negatives. It's all good! Change your vocabulary and thinking to a more positive mind set. We do ourselves a great disservice by comparing and analyzing who we are in retrospect to others. Judging our performance, philosophy, our earnings and material wealth. We are way more than the 10% of what people see.

I learnt by failing that I don't need to be successful or perfect at anything to be happy. I can enjoy the moment regardless of handicap or pain. That's a big realization in terms of adaptation and self acceptance! My therapist said pay attention to my thoughts, all of them, not just the good ones. And I am. I went to Giant Tiger to pick up some odds and ends and was stuck in a huge line at the check out. My endurance somewhat fleeting. I employ stretching and moving around while waiting. Extreme pain in my head, just breath slow in out sit in the pain and breath through it. I survived. Learning curve don't go at lunch time silly. Understanding our pain, our limits and abilities is a good start in the healing process. It's a big deal so I'm sharing it with you. It helps and works. Practicing mindfulness, energy management, a shelf life for your emotions, good sleep hygiene, the Yoga and a process free raw food diet. I even imagine it all chipping away at my disease. I'm starting to see results now in shifting my mind set. There may not be a "cure" for CFS mental illness etc or what terrible situation has befallen you, there's still hope for you to change, adapt and to create your own joy. Try out something that will bring some relief, you never know where that will lead you. Little by little, tiny beautiful bunches of happiness and success. So I'm going to keep working my schedule no matter how grim and depressed I am. I'm going to continue to rock my adaptation by not giving in to the fear of failure, lack or the unknown. I put in the time to go out to socialize and play music once a month because it's good for me even if I have to leave early or don't even get there. There was still lots of little steps of success throughout my day. I've been working hard on my stamina and energy consumption by practicing the standing, walking, singing and playing guitar. I was caught off guard by the crippling physical exhaustion. Next time I'll try an afternoon meditation session or even a power nap on music outing night. The smooth ride was over. Overdoing any type of activity can leave me in jeopardy of injury. Like loosing physical balance; I've injured myself enough to know no thank you body, I'm listening. Often I'm in bad shape for days with flu like/sun burn/tin man symptoms.

Ok fine, body you win this one.

Failure aside, I still got out of the house. I interacted with other humans and did something that brings me joy. I find when I'm not attached to the outcome, results or expectations, my moments can be enjoyable in spite of my body. Suddenly any down time becomes worth the little bit of enjoyment. Its about the quality of those moments and those were some good quality moments. Not a complete failure as I first thought. Yes it was depressing that I couldn't physically get through 3 songs this time. What does this inability means for my physical health in the future? Then the fear old me. New me however what I did perform, I did do justice! This is to be expected, the no more energy thing. This is my normal now. It's the nature of the beast. And I was pacing myself. I guess it doesn't matter that my practicing was successful or consistent because it suddenly became nul and void up against illness. I got to be realistic here. Yes CFS is a real fucking thing! It's like the narrow mindedness that comes with "flat worlders" have friends all over the globe. My CFS/TBI clearly cut me to the quick. It let me know who's bitch I really am. No more performing of any kind tonight! The old me: I was so bummed, ready to pack it all in, no cure; minimal enjoyment and relief. Ensuing some kind of abusive self harm behavior, the old me. The new me: Ok, so it was too much for me this time. Maybe not the next. It happens to lots of people. I know exactly how Lady Gaga feels. My body and mind gave out mid performance. Severe dry mouth, balancing and memory issues. It was awkward. I was somewhat dumbfounded. I had to stop singing and playing guitar or I was going to wipe out on the stage damaging lots of nice equipment and instruments. I can't keep putting myself at risk of falling. With chronic fatigue (insert auto immun/mental disorder)etc. Safety is an issue. You literally have no choice. Your tiered body/what's broken wins. Sometimes in extreme ways. I'll rest, dust myself off and give it another go another day.

I'll keep at it. I have too! I will not let illness dictate my life. I'll find a way to live with it, cure it or kill it which ever comes first.

So after a lot of consideration, I’ve decided that Jason suffering from a Traumatic Brain Injury is going to become part of my blog canon. This is only going to apply to my main verse, and other verses where he died after being beaten by the Joker via use of a crowbar. There’s some canon evidence to support this decision, as evidenced at the end of Under The Hood and in Red Hood: The Lost Days by Judd Winnick.

More under the cut, so I’m not clogging up the dash.

In Under The Hood, Jason was said to have been dead for roughly six months before “fate” (aka Superboy-Prime punching reality) decided to set things right, as he was “never supposed to die.” He woke up, panicked because he was in a coffin and dug his way out, then apparently walked for 12.5 miles in the rain and dark with all of his injuries - as he wasn’t ‘healed’ upon waking up, so he had whatever he was suffering from before he died in the explosion, which according to the panel below included a cracked skull causing bleeding into the brain, a shattered sternum, flash burns and at least forty other fractures.

Although severely wounded the cops indicate he was awake and talking to them only to “go under” and presumably they didn’t think he was going to wake up after surgery because of the extent of his injuries. After slipping into a coma Jason was moved to a facility that cared for patients with minimal brain function. It states that he was now in a chronic vegetative state. So, not comatose, not healed, still unconscious and unresponsive, but not brain dead either. They go on to explain that it was his survival instincts that caused him to wake up even though his body shouldn’t have allowed him to.

Now, since you can’t be in a PVS (Persistent Vegetative State) and conscious at the same time, and they made sure to specify that a year had passed by the time he woke up (it takes only a few months to be declared PVS without brain trauma and at least 1 year with trauma), it seems likely that he went from being comatose, to vegetative, to finally a minimally conscious state.

According to multiple sources, people in a MCS, while not completely functional/aware, do retain some understanding of their conscious surroundings. There is enough to prove that this is distinctly different than people who are comatose or in PVS, as they are not conscious or aware of anything at all, even with stimulation. Jason woke up from a vegetative state and walked out of the hospital, surviving for more than a year on the streets while relying on his old instincts and what Batman taught him. He knew when he was cold, hungry, etc., and he also knew what to do to fix these problems.

Yet, despite his survival skills, he doesn’t attempt to seek out Bruce, and he doesn’t speak even once (that we’re shown) between the time he slipped into a coma and when Talia pushes him into the Lazarus Pit. Either he doesn’t have enough awareness to remember his death/what happened to him, or he does but doesn’t have the ability to make decisions beyond survival reflexes. I have a theory, due to the two above panels and the term jog a memory, that Jason didn’t try to find Bruce despite being in Gotham because he didn’t remember him until he was put in danger. Think about it. He woke up in an unfamiliar place, in no physical pain, wandered outside…

What was Jason doing before he met Bruce at age 12? He was living on the streets! Stealing to survive! So he went back to doing that. Whether he was aware something was wrong with him during this time is debatable, but it seems doubtful.

It’s more likely that the familiar environment of the alley and being subjected to pain (especially since that would have been the last thing he remembered before his death) just provoked a similar response that he would have had while being attacked as Robin.

Don’t ask me why an alcoholic, homeless former criminal knew someone that was friends with Talia Al Ghul. They never explain.

Back to the point; aside from his survival skills Jason seemed unable to actually function in his condition. Talia knew it, as did Ra’s, and so did the doctors they hired. In the following final panels from Under The Hood, Ra’s admits that Jason could be useful one day but decides that after a year of trying to get Jason to respond enough to tell them how he came back to life, he’s unlikely to ever speak or…emote, ever again.

Despite multiple people insisting that Jason will never recover mentally, despite physically being at peak health and having the conditioning of an Olympic athlete, they all claim that his brain damage is too severe and that naturally he could never regain any form of awareness again. Talia disputes this, and she seems correct, to a degree.

Though he lashes out when provoked through pain, he never fights back when it’s her, something she’s quick to point out. This indicates he has enough awareness that he realizes this is a person trying to help him. Someone that cares.

Supposedly, people in a minimally conscious state can exhibit emotional reactions to specific stimuli, such as smiling or crying. When Talia begins talking to Jason about Bruce, about how he misses Jason and has been grieving and suffering since his death, Jason doesn’t verbally respond in anyway, but he cries. Talia seems to understand that he does hear her, even though he can’t respond, which means he does remember Bruce, and he misses him too.

After being exposed to a Lazarus Pit, Jason regains all of his memories, his ability to speak, and consciousness of his surroundings as well as the other abilities he had before his death. However, due to the fact that his brain had several years time to heal before his exposure, and it was still developing at the time to boot (meaning he’s arguably mentally younger than he’s supposed to be, thinking like a 15 year old as opposed to a 19-20 year old), I find it likely that aside from “waking” him up, so to speak, it did little else. Although he has recovered enough to live the “normal” life of your typical gun-totting vigilante, Jason does still suffer from the side effects of the severe brain damage that Joker inflicted on him.

This includes cognitive problems that give him learning disorder like symptoms, such as Dyslexia, and difficulty reading fine print/fancy script especially. Early on he had a lot of trouble with some of his fine and gross motor skills, having to relearn many of them. There’s also neurobehavioral problems, which are described as behavioral problems attributed to specific aspects of a brain injury. Individuals may develop difficulty with self-control, impulse control, frustration, anger and aggression issues, and behaving with inappropriate ways socially. Physical therapy/training, something Jason participates in frequently because of his lifestyle, can help repair muscle and neuromotor skills. While he is frustrated frequently due to the limitations he suffers from, it’s not enough that it actually prevents him from doing most things.

It’s mostly mental deficits that impede his day to day life. TBIs can cause emotional, social, or behavioral problems and changes in personality. Jason in particular is emotionally unstable and suffers from depression (occasionally to the point of being self destructive and at times suicidal) and anxiety that are linked to his trauma, social withdrawal, inability to control his anger… he has insomnia and goes through bipolar-like mania not unrelated to his PTSD, and his psychosis can be triggered by unexpected things (such as the video will Bruce left him after he supposedly died, an example of by far one of his worst mental breakdowns).
