May Intake at UK Universities – What You Need To Know
Tumblr media
We're getting close to the start of the UK university admissions season, which means a fresh batch of students. Several colleges and universities in the UK are taking advantage of the May intake to sign up more students. This is so they can keep up with the growing demand for higher education.
The September intake is the busiest time of the year for UK institutions. College results are made public to prospective students and their families at the start of May. Additionally, it is the final opportunity for pupils to apply to colleges before clearance begins. In this blog, we're going to look at some of the typical and significant aspects of the May intake in UK institutions.
Exactly why do universities in the UK welcome new students in the month of May?
Foreign students have a preference for the January intake in the United Kingdom over the mid-intake in the UK in 2023, which will mark the start of the summer semester in the United Kingdom. Most foreign students who want to return for a second semester take those months off, since the academic year starts then.
Even though there are fewer universities in the UK that accept mid-intake 2023 students and fewer degrees available, there are a few reasons to choose this intake for 2023. These reasons are explained below.
Institution of Higher Learning in Coventry
The QS has awarded Coventry University a distinguished five-star rating, placing it among the world's top 600–650 institutions. Coventry University has been named as one of the world's top 200 institutions by Times Higher Education. It holds the third spot in the UK rankings.
Coventry University is now taking applications from international students who want to start there in May 2023.
Unexpectedly, more than 15,500 of the total student body of almost 34,000 are from outside the United States. According to the QS Rankings 2022, the university's high number of foreign students places it in the top 30 worldwide.
Kent University
At the University of Kent in Canterbury, the United Kingdom, there are now more than 3,500 foreign students studying from more than 150 different countries. The postgraduate centres for the institution are located in both London and Brussels. The Complete University Guide 2022 put the University of Kent in the top 50. It has high-quality education and facilities that meet the needs of the business world. It is now ranked 383rd globally in the QS World University Rankings for 2022 and is one of the top 50 universities in the United Kingdom.
Northumbria College
The city campus of Northumbria University is in Newcastle upon Tyne. It is a public university that serves the North East of England. According to THE's Young University Rankings 2021, Northumbria University is one of the top 100 universities in the world. It is one of the top 700 universities in the world as of the 2022 edition of the QS World University Rankings.
London's Brunel University
The QS World University Rankings for 2022 place Brunel University London, which is located in the United Kingdom, at 351.
More than 5,300 of the university's more than 13,000 students are from other countries. This makes the campus in beautiful Uxbridge, West London, a lively, cosmopolitan place. One of the institutions with the greatest attention in the world is Brunel University London, which was recognized in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022.
Ulster College
Ulster University is in the range of 651–700 on the QS Top Universities list for 2022 because it does a lot of research. More than 90% of Ulster University graduates are either working or going back to school six months after they graduate. More than 1,800 of a total of 25,000 pupils are foreign-born.
Ulster University is ranked among the top 50 institutions for the first time in the Complete University Guide (CUG) 2022 League Table's 15-year history.
London's Richmond University
London's Richmond University is renowned for its flexibility and range of academic offerings. Richmond University's core values include internationalism, personal attention, small class sizes, and significant scholarships. Its student population is truly international, representing more than 100 different nations.
School of Hertfordshire
The University of Hertfordshire was rated 99th in the Times University Guide and ranked 103rd in the Guardian University Guide for 2021. The Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework (TEF) gave the University of Hertfordshire a gold medal for its great academic performance in the UK.
The Guardian University Award for Outstanding Student Experience was given to the University of Hertfordshire in 2015.
University of Teesside
In the last 20 years, Teesside University has grown to offer more than 270 full-time programs and 145 sandwich/placement programs in a wide range of fields, such as computer science, sociology, art history, engineering, biology, and more.
The institution was ranked 87th in the Times/Sunday Times and 68th in the Guardian University Guide in 2021.
Teesside University staff members received seven National Teaching Fellowships, which contributed to the school's achievement of Silver rank in the TEF.
Keele College
The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 says that 80% of the university's research is either world-leading or excellent around the world.
Also, the Student Crowd University Awards 2022 named Keele Institution the best university in the UK. Keele University is ranked between 501 and 600 in Times Higher Education's 2022 global university rankings, which places it in the lowest 50 percent of all institutions worldwide.
If we examine the university's ranking in the UK, we see that it is among the top 100 institutions there. Keele University is ranked 48th by The Guardian and 58th by The Complete University Guide for the year 2022.
Keele University will be rated 751–800 by QS in 2022 and 2023.
Final Reflections
It might be challenging to choose the correct subject since university admissions are competitive. But if you really want to go to a UK university with admissions in May 2023, you can increase your chances of getting in by making a plan and knowing all the steps you need to take to enroll in the program you want at the university you want.
Are you thinking of continuing your studies in the UK? If so, you should probably learn about the requirements for admission to a UK mid-intake institution. Even though some requirements are the same for all schools, it's a good idea to look into each one before sending in an application because they all have different needs.
We hope that this information will be helpful to you as you choose where to study in the UK for the May 2023 intake. Keep in touch with AHZ members to learn about new opportunities and the most recent news in UK higher education. Your admission to prestigious UK institutions will be facilitated by our expertise.

RIBA North East Awards 2018
1 Dec 2017 Northumbria and Ryder Architecture win award for most innovative collaboration
Northumbria University and Ryder have been recognised as the UK’s most innovative collaboration between a business and a university in the Times Higher Education Awards.
The University and Ryder began collaborating seven years ago to develop a specialist centre of excellence for digital engineering and transformation, forming BIM Academy, which provides consultancy, research and education activities on Building Information Modelling to global clients. This innovative approach has been recognised with the award for Most Innovative Contribution to Business-University Collaboration, sponsored by the National Centre for Universities and Business.
The award is presented to the business that demonstrates the most imaginative and effective ‘game-changing’ partnership with an institution which has led to significant long-term benefits to the business, the university and the economy.
Through BIM Academy, Northumbria academics and graduates work with Ryder to support the digital transformation of the construction industry through Building Information Modelling. BIM Academy provides independent research-based expertise combined with practical industry experience which helps clients transform their businesses through the intelligent application of smart processes and digital technologies.
Thanks to the success of the partnership, BIM Academy has been commissioned to work on high-profile development projects in Europe, the Middle and Far East and Australasia including the Sydney Opera House and Hong Kong’s M+ Museum. Most recently, it has been commissioned to provide BIM support to the Chinese creator of Forest City, a US$100 billion development off the coast of Malaysia, near Singapore. Described as the ‘Oscars of UK higher education’, the Times Higher Education Awards attract entries from universities that exemplify talent, dedication and innovation across all aspects of university life. Judges particularly praised the partnership for bringing vital competitive advantage to the UK construction industry.
Professor Glen McHale, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Engineering and Environment at Northumbria University, said: “BIM Academy is one of our shining examples of truly innovative partnership working which has brought huge benefits to all involved. Our students and staff have benefitted from being able to apply their teaching and research into real-life contexts; our partners at Ryder have benefitted from the leading-edge research knowledge within the University, and of course, our clients have benefitted from this excellent combination of skills to transform their businesses. “We were shortlisted against some excellent collaborative partnerships and are delighted that the judges recognised how distinctive our work in this area has been over the past seven years.
Peter Barker, partner at Ryder and managing director of BIM Academy, said: “It is very rewarding to see that our team’s hard work has paid off in growing our joint venture to be an internationally successful commercial business, as well as a centre of academic research excellence for the digital construction sector.” Last month, BIM Academy was also recognised at the BT Dynamites17 awards, winning the international success award for its work in delivering building information modelling consultancy and research to clients across the world. Established in Newcastle in 1953, Ryder now has global connectivity with teams based in Glasgow, Liverpool, London, Hong Kong and Vancouver, employing 150 people. Mark said, “We believe PlanBEE will inspire a new generation of bright, talented people to consider a rewarding career in construction. The blended learning approach aims to deliver work ready graduates with the creative, practical and entrepreneurial ambition the industry needs.”
6 Dec 2016 Motionspot and Ryder Architecture crowned winners of the prestigious Celia Thomas Prize
Held at the Palace of Westminster, the international competition to design an accessible hotel room of the future was run in association with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and Bespoke Hotels. The competition attracted entries from around the world including Germany, Russia, Hong Kong and Canada. Entrants competed across a range of categories, including Product and Service Design, as well as the Celia Thomas Prize, worth £20,000 – believed to be the largest cash prize in the UK for a design concept.
Specialist accessible design company, Motionspot and international design practice, Ryder Architecture’s collaborative winning entry – AllGo, is a unique, universal approach to hotel room design to ensure that all rooms are functional, flexible, accessible and beautiful in their design.
AllGo will deliver personalised, accessible hotel rooms across the world, removing the barriers to travel and creating truly inclusive environments for guests. Each room can be adapted to the needs of the user through integrated and flexible design features that can be modified before the arrival of the guest.
Motionspot and Ryder will now look to realise the design concepts and aim to roll out pilot rooms in the coming year. It is hoped this will act as a catalyst illustrating the potential of a hotel environment, delivering beautiful, functional and fully accessible rooms.
Ed Warner, founder of Motionspot said, “Accessible hotel room design can be a real headache for architects, hotel operators and users alike. In collaboration with Ryder, the competition gave us the opportunity to create a concept that redefines the design of hotel bedrooms and bathrooms so they deliver the individual access requirements of guests without compromising on the aesthetics of the environment.”
David McMahon, associate at Ryder said, “We are extremely proud of the concept we have developed. Our collaboration with Motionspot has allowed us to create aspirational and inclusive environments for all. We hope that this paves the way in accessible design illustrating that good design should meet the needs of all.”
The entries were judged by a panel which included Paralympic gold medallist Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, Stirling Prize winning architect Alan Stanton, and Baroness Celia Thomas herself, gathered in the Autumn to assess the submissions.

Jon Humphreys, right, Ryder associate, collects the award:
Ryder managing partner Mark Thompson said “We are delighted with this accolade, particularly for all our people who put in so much hard work and who clearly gain so much from working at Ryder. To be the highest placed architect is a great benchmark for us to measure continued improvement.”
With offices in Glasgow, Liverpool, London and Newcastle – where the company was founded in 1953 – the ethos of creating talented multi disciplinary teams fostered by the founders Gordon Ryder and Peter Yates clearly remains to this day. Now a 120 strong practice, Ryder has also been shortlisted for Building magazine’s Architectural Practice of the Year award. Its iconic £82m anti crime centre near Glasgow (Scottish Crime Campus) is nominated for a BCO award and it has recently been appointed for a major office project in Greater Manchester.

The exhibition runs until the 27th June, and charts the challenges, developments and complimentary strands of architecture across the decades, mapping Ryder’s work and seeking to place it within the context of the times. The projects chosen for the exhibition particularly highlight Ryder’s long standing use of interdisciplinary collaborations to support flexible design teams that answer the increasingly complex demands of management, economics and technology within design in the built environment.
Peter continues, “Working together – multi-disciplinary working – has always been at the core of Ryder’s ethos, from the very beginning with Gordon Ryder and Peter Yates’ innovative partnership in 1953, up to the present day with the Ryder-led Future of Built Environment Education campaign to reform built environment education and entry to the industry professions.”
The exhibition started it tour at the Briggait in Glasgow, and will move on from London to Mann Island, Liverpool, in October and finish at the BALTIC Centre in Newcastle in November.
Ryder’s 60th anniversary year has already seen some prestigious successes, with the practice winning two categories in this year’s AJ100 Awards; New Member of the Year, and the Best Place to Work in the North East & Yorkshire. Ryder has also achieved Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For, 2013.

Apple Design Guru Jonathan Ive Has Left the Company
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sir Jonathan Ive, Apple’s chief design officer who is behind the look and feel of the iPhone or iMac that you use today, has formally left Apple as his biography along with photo disappearing from Apple’s Leadership page. British-origin Ive who worked at Apple for almost 30 years in June announced to move on and decided to form an independent design firm called LoveFrom that would treat Apple as its most prestigious client.
Ive is a singular figure in the design world and his role in Apple’s revival cannot be overstated, from 1998’s ground-breaking iMac to the iPhone and the unprecedented ambition of Apple Park, where recently he has been putting so much of his energy and care,” Apple CEO Tim Cook had said at that time.
Ive was one of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs’ closest friends who considered him as a “spiritual partner”. Ive has been the key design figure behind products like the original iMac, iPod, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Apple’s new “spaceship campus”.
Ive’s departure from Apple comes at a crucial time as the tech giant is working on new-look iPhone 12 and maybe its first foldable smartphone.
Born and raised in London, Ive studied design at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle and had his work displayed at the Design Museum. After graduation, he was hired by a start-up called Tangerine to work in their industrial design group.
Formally recruited to Apple as a full-time employee in September 1992, Ive was initially apprehensive about leaving Tangerine for Apple as he thought the move from Britain to California would take a toll on his family.
Initial design failures and lack of commercial success during the early 1990s prompted Ive to nearly quit on several occasions.
Late Steve Jobs, who had been ousted by other Apple executives in 1985, staged a return in 1997 and went straight to Ive, recruiting him in taking the firm to a different direction.
Jobs made him senior vice president of industrial design and Ive went on to head the design team responsible for most of the company’s significant hardware products.
Ive’s first design assignment was iconic iMac in 1998 that helped pave the way for many other designs such as the iPod and eventually the iPhone and the iPad.

Investment Opportunities in London’s Student Hot Spots
London is a large city with many varying neighbourhoods. Where you live will impact your university experience to an extent, as you will want to choose an area you feel comfortable in.
Beginning your studies in London can be overwhelming. The city is made up of 32 boroughs covering 607 square miles and home to almost 9 million people. There are 40 higher education institutions (excluding London branches of foreign universities) educating over 400,000 students. It goes without saying that there will be a lot of choice when it comes to choosing your university institution and accommodation.
Universities in London tend to have their campuses in the city centre, with London School of Economics, Queen Mary and King’s College being situated around Aldwych and Holborn, and Imperial being in South Kensington. UCL is around Russell Square and Euston.
Many students decide to live near their university site and in central London as they will be close to all that London has to offer in terms of places to eat, museums, transport hubs and other attractions. They will also be less reliant on public transport and will have the ability to explore most of London on foot. Here are our suggestions on areas to consider living if you are a student in London.
Shoreditch and Spitalfields
Tumblr media
Located along the outskirts of the City of London and close to Liverpool Street, Spitalfields and Shoreditch are popular areas for Chinese students. East London is often considered “trendy” and “arty” and will really resonate with students who are undertaking more creative degrees. Shoreditch is famed for its nightlife and Spitalfields is home to a large market which is open daily. Both areas have plenty of restaurants and cafes for students to spend their free time refuelling and studying. Universities in the immediate vicinity include London Metropolitan University (Aldgate campus), and London campuses of Northumbria University and Coventry University. The University of Law and City University are also close by.
South Kensington
South Kensington is in west London and is considered leafy and upmarket with tree-lined streets and Georgian housing. Here you will find many of London’s world-famous museums such as the Science Museum, Victoria and Albert and the Natural History Museum. Imperial College London have a site near to the Science Museum, so students can spend their days in lectures and expanding their minds attending the many exhibitions the Science Museum hosts each year. King’s College and London School of Economics are a short underground ride away.
King’s Cross
Recently regenerated King’s Cross is a great area for students who like industrial-style housing and having everything on their doorstep. One such industrial-style development is Coal Drops Yard, which won a RIBA architecture award as the judges appreciated the sensitive refurbishment of the original structures and the ‘kissing roofs’. The name Coal Drops Yard was chosen to pay homage to the gas manufacturing works in the area.
King’s Cross is one of the best-connected areas of London, with 6 lines running through its underground station, an overground train station that has services to various cities to the north east of London and Scotland, and nearby St. Pancras where holidaymakers can catch the Eurostar to other cities in Europe such as Amsterdam, Bruges and Paris.
Not only is King’s Cross one of the most coveted areas in London with the best-connected transport hubs, it is also close to some of London’s top universities, including UCL and SOAS.
Tumblr media
The Plimsoll Building King’s Cross overlooks Regent’s Canal and Gasholder Park. The Plimsoll development was built when the regeneration of King’s X was underway, and investors can use the increased attractiveness of the area to their advantage.
The ground and first floors are dedicated to its two schools, so there is a strong sense of community and longer-term tenants with families living in the immediate area.
One Touch Property on offer a 10th floor apartment which boasts spectacular views, two double bedrooms, two modern bathrooms, open plan living area, fully fitted kitchen and balcony. Available furnished, the apartment is 69 square metres, including the balcony. Residents will benefit from the use of a 24-hour concierge, residents’ lounge, rooftop conservatory, courtyard garden and fitness suite. The apartment’s layout is ideal if it were to be let as a rental property. It boasts two bedrooms and two bathrooms, allowing each occupant maximum privacy and independence.
Investors do not have to worry about immediately finding a tenant as the property is already occupied and the tenant intends to stay. Find out more about this property investment in King’s Cross today.
In conclusion, different neighbourhoods will appeal to different students. Those who are into the arts scene with pop-up shops and fusion restaurants will enjoy the Shoreditch / Spitalfields area. Those who want leafier surroundings close to museums and concert halls will be attracted to areas such as South Kensington, and those who wish to shop in curated boutique stores, be close to the action and navigate the city with ease will appreciate the convenience of the King’s Cross area.

Northumbria University is one of the UK's leading universities, with over 30,000 students from over 140 nationalities.
History
Rutherford College, which was founded in 1880 in Newcastle upon Tyne, is the progenitor of the University of Northumbria in the United Kingdom. Initially, the university was classified as a polytechnic.
Newcastle University arose from the merger of Rutherford College of Technology, The College of Art and Industrial Design, and The Municipal College of Commerce in 1969. Newcastle Polytechnic grew from the foundations of these well-known colleges to become one of the country's leading polytechnic institutes.
The polytechnic became the epicentre of basic teacher education after the creation of the City College of Education in 1984. Northern Counties College of Education was founded in 1976 as well. Occupational therapy and physiotherapy training, as well as nursing training, were added to the polytechnic's curriculum in 1976.
In 1992, the institute was granted university status. Since then, the university has evolved into a research institute with campuses in both the UK and the Netherlands.
Northumbria University now has four campuses across the United Kingdom, serving over 30,000 students from more than 140 countries. The University of Northumbria has achieved a silver TEF award, making it one of the best universities in the UK.
Student Life
Northumbria University's Newcastle Campus offers a superb social environment for students. Newcastle's position as the best student city in the UK according to Student Hut's 'Best for 2019' speaks for itself. The city is praised for providing the optimal environment for students. It's large enough to be diverse, but small enough for students to feel at home.
The Newcastle Campus of the University of Northumbria provides several possibilities to meet and network with like-minded people. It provides students with a varied choice of nightlife alternatives, including clubs, cafes, and pubs.
Newcastle is like a mini-paradise for sports fanatics. Students can pursue their passion for sports at United St James' Park, Falcons Rugby Stadium, Kingston Park, and additional Basketball and outdoor games courts.
The London Campus of Northumbria University, on the other hand, provides students with a unique academic experience that includes professional lecturers and industry-focused courses. The campus is in the 'student centre,' which is flanked by other prestigious universities in the United Kingdom. Northumbria University students will have the opportunity to meet and mingle with other students in the neighbourhood.
