Queer Star Wars Characters (Round 1): General Character Bracket 7
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jordanna Sparkburn | Identity: wlw | Media: The High Republic Out of the Shadows
Jordanna Sparkburn is a member of a cadet branch of the wealthy San Tekka family. She was born on the frontier planet of Tikkae, which was a San Tekka holding. She grew up with the expectation of succeeding her aunt as the San Tekka deputy of the planet. In the year before the Great Hyperspace Disaster, she fell in love with Sylvestri Yarrow, the daughter of a hauler who was spending time on the planet. When it was time for Sylvestri to rejoin her mother, she offered for Jordanna to join her. Not wanting to abandon her duty, she declined and they separated on poor terms.
Later, when the Nihil attacked and destroyed Tikkae, she joined the Jedi Imri Canatas, Cohmac Vitus, Reath Silas, and Vernestra Rwoh to travel to Coruscant where she could get into contact with the San Teka family. The San Tekka family sent her to accompany a Senate investigation into the Berenge Sector, which used to be owned by the San Tekkas. This investigation included the four Jedi she had already met, Xylan Graf, and her ex- Sylvestri. Xylan believed that the Berenge Sector was being used for Nihil experimentation into a Mass Shadow Generator, which Slyvestri’s mother was helping them build. In the course of all the intrigue and danger in Out of the Shadows, Sylvestri and Jordanna work through the bad feelings they separated on. After the events of the novel, now that Jordanna had no posting, she decides to join Sylvestri and they set off on their new ship to see what jobs Maz Kanata has for them.
Kevmo Zink | Identity: pansexual | Media: The High Republic Phase II
Kevmo Zink was a Jedi Padawan who traveled to Dalna with his master Zallah Marci to investigate if the Force cult The Path of the Open Hand was involved in the theft of the Rod of Seasons. There, he met Marda Ro, who was a member of the Path. Amongst all the intrigue, the two began a hesitant romance despite their completely opposed theologies. Despite even earning the trust of many of the Path by saving a family of Kessarine when the caves they lived in flooded, the conflict between the Path and the Jedi was unavoidable. When he ran into the Mother’s newly hatched Leveler, it consumed him and Zallah. Marda took his lightsaber and made what justifications she needed to remain loyal to the Path. Kevmo continued to haunt Marda, with it being ambiguous if this was her own guilt or a manifestation of the Force. Kevmo was a promising Jedi Padawan, eager to help and interested in learning about other people. However this came with a certain level of naivety and disbelief when it came to the views of the Path and what such views really meant. He believed he could convince Marda to leave the Path and reveal where the stolen Force artifacts were, while simultaneously being conflicted about what his love for her meant regarding his own future as a Jedi. He had a level of eagerness and openness, including “accidentally flirt[ing] with nearly every life-form he came across”, which tempted with experience meant he could have been a great Jedi.

I'll be honest, I felt a bit queasy reading this. Maybe it was because I was already a bit sad about Oliviah Zeveron; or maybe it was because I was reminded Kevmo before he was similarly killed - when he was alone in that cave on Dalna after witnessing his Master's (Zallah Macri) death by the Leveler. It's not just the horror of facing that monster, or the way it seems to suck out all of the life of person leaving only a mere husk as remains (that by the softest touch breaks into dust). For Jedi (or any for sensitive) it is the fact that you lose all connection with the Force (whether in actuality or if it just feels as such) prior to being devoured. It must be so completely terrifying and disorienting.

Queer Star Wars Characters (Round 1): General Bracket Match 51
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Marda Ro | Identity: bisexual | Media: The High Republic Phase II
Marda Ro was a member of the stigmatized Evereni species. She was raised in the Path of the Open Hand with her cousin Yana Ro, and had no real memory of her parents or life before the cult. She grew up to be a true believer. Good with children, her job was to supervise the Littles- the younglings of the Path. She was soft spoken and very kind. She had previously kissed a girl who lived in Ferdan, until the girl’s father intervened, dragging her away spouting anti-Evereni and anti-Path rhetoric. When the Jedi Kevmo Zink came to Dalna with his master to investigate the Path for stealing Force artifacts, she fell in love with the young Jedi. After he was killed by the Leveler, she rationalized it by blaming the Jedi and becoming even more entrenched in the cult. After Kevmo’s death, she began to see his ghost- representing her doubts. It is unknown if such a thing was entirely her own mind or an actual manifestation of the Cosmic Force.
It was her idea to bring the Path to Jedha, where they could spread their beliefs among the various Force religions of the planet. For that she was dubbed the Path’s Guide. The chaos that ensued only made her feel more adrift. Wanting to make up for the failure of Jedha, she joined a group of Path members to travel to Planet X to retrieve Nameless eggs. The mission included Bokana Koss, who she had begun a relationship with. Most of the Path members died, including Koss, which Marda rationalized as resulting from him abusing the Force due to the Force sensitivity the planet granted him. The trauma of that event turned her into a violent zealot for the Path. She returned to the Path, and whipped them up into a frenzy, finalizing the Mother’s militarization efforts by declaring that the Path was now the Path of the Closed Fist. In the ensuing chaos, she discovered that the Mother wasn’t a true believer and was just following her own agenda. She overpowered her and took the Rod of Power for herself. However, with all the Jedi around to feed on, she was unable to fully control the Nameless. To end the carnage, she flooded the tunnels of the Path compound, killing all the Nameless except for the Leveler.
After the battle, she was now set on her path. She still believed in the ideology of the Path, and her new certainty caused Kevmo to disappear. She killed the Mother, who was a prisoner of the Jedi. Abandoning her cousin, she took the Rod of Seasons, the Leveler, and the Gaze Electric and set off to found what would become the Nihil (as well as possibly the Elders of the Path, the specifics are still unknown).
Sabé | Identity: bisexual | Media: Queen’s Trilogy/Darth Vader comics
Sabé, born Tsabin, was a member of a family of musicians who set their daughter on the same path. However, she was only skilled enough to ever have a supporting role and instead volunteered to be one of Queen Amidala’s handmaidens. She became Padmé’s most trusted operative, pretending to be the Queen during the Invasion of Naboo. After Padmé’s term as queen ended, she remained her operative and worked with Tonra, a member of Naboo’s security force, to attempt to free slaves on Tatooine. They eventually made contact with the White Suns, a Tatioone slave liberation movement. When the Clone Wars began, Sabé once again acted as Padmé’s decoy when Padmé was away from Coruscant conducting an investigation. There she learned Anakin and Padmé were married. However, to make sure Padmé didn’t have her closest confidant, Palpatine blasted Sabé’s brain with the Dark Side until she didn’t want to work closely with Padmé anymore. Sabé spent the rest of the war helping the White Suns.
After Padmé died, Sabé founded an organization known as the Amidalans- a rebel cell consisting of Naboo (including some of the other handmaidens), who sought to avenge Padmé. They attempted to assassinate Vader (who they deemed responsible) on multiple occasions. Sabé focused on deception, preventing to work with Vader to find Padmé’s killer and infiltrating Crimson Dawn.  until she figured out that Vader was Anakin. Remembering how Padmé’s last words (which had been recorded) was “There’s still good in [Anakin]”, she decided to actually become Vader’s operative. Her given reason was that the Empire and Vader did bring order to the galaxy, but it is just as likely she is following her queen’s last order to attempt to bring the man she loved back to the light. She remained by Vader’s side even when her fellow handmaidens came to “rescue” her. Her last appearance in the comics was Vader abandoning her on a beach until she could decide to fully commit to the Dark Side (emotionally speaking). Sabé had crushes on a handful of people and even a romantic relationship with Tonra, but her most important was her romantic love for Padmé. These feelings were requited, with Queen’s Hope creating a love triangle where Sabé represented ideology and duty and Anakin was selfish love. As we know, Padmé chose Anakin, but a deciding factor was Sabé’s self esteem being temporarily shattered by Palpatine. Her wider moral view seems to have degraded after spending over two decades focusing on avenging Padmé instead of joining the wider Rebellion. However, even working for the Empire, she hasn’t gone completely evil yet- doing things like pretending to kill a bunch of refugees to gain their loyalty instead of actually killing them.

Queer Star Wars Characters (Round 1): General Bracket Match 9
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fel Ix | Identity: alien transgeder/poly | Media: The High Republic Phase II
Fel Ix was a Kesserine member of the Path of the Open Hand, a gecko-like species. They are born without sex differentiation, and approximately 40% of them mature into egg-bearers, with the being’s will playing a role. In basic, egg bearers use she/her pronouns, but human genders weren’t actually applicable. Fel Ix had two partners, Ferize and Er Dal. The three of them also had five newly hatched children. During a flash-flood on Dalna, the family was saved with the help of Jedi Padawan Kevmo Zink, which began Fel Ix questioning his cult programming.
After the Battle of Jedi, Fel Ix was part of a team assigned by the Mother to disable hyperspace buoys, crippling communications throughout the frontier. The team ran into the Brightbird, a ship participating in the Hyperspace Chase with the goal of rediscovering the mysterious Planet X. Because the crew included the Jedi Padawan Rooper, the meeting turned violent. Fel Ix was taken hostage. While Fel Ix was dragged on their mission, he started to talk with the members of the crew and his cult deprogramming began to break down. However, the goal of reaching Planet X was disrupted when a message from Rooper’s master managed to reach the Brightbird, ordering her to Dalna due to the Path massing there. Worried for his partners and children, it was Fel Ix who convinced Sky to give up looking for their father and travel to Dalna. To a tense standoff in space between Path hired mercenaries and the Jedi/Republic. Convinced by Rooper’s good intentions and her promise that communication was what was needed to prevent more deaths, he agreed to fix the sabotaged communications buoy. Doing so allowed the Jedi forces on Daln to coordinate as well as negotiate with the hired mercenaries, preventing further deaths during the Night of Sorrow. Seeing the Path turn fully violent, Fel Ix’s programming was broken. Fel Ix was released into Jedi custody, but not really a prisoner. He gave them all the information he had, while they promised to help locate his family.
Ilyana | Identity: wlw | Media: Jedi Fallen Order/Battle Scars
Ilyana was a young Dathormirian Nightsister who was killed in the massacre of Mother Talzin’s clan. She was close to Merrin. Together they would sneak out to make potions in the Dathomirian swamps. When recovering from an injury, Merrin took care of her, which Ilyana thanked her by giving Merrin the necklace she is always wearing. The gift was given with a kiss, which was Merrin’s first. When Merrin was beginning her relationship with Chellwinark Frethylrin, she remembered her childhood relationship with Ilyana. Whenever Merrin’s necklace struck against her chest, it triggered a sensory memory of Ilyana.
Ilyana was first mentioned in an optional conversation between Merrin and Cere in Jedi Fallen Order. While Merrin was intended as pansexual from the beginning, the conversation merely heavily implied their relationship. Battle Scars clarified the nature of the relationship and added that Ilyana is the origin of Merrin’s necklace.

Queer Star Wars Characters (Round 1): General Bracket Match 37
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chase Wilsorr | Identity: mlm | Media: ESB/”A Good Kiss”
Chase Wilsorr was the rebel soldier who walked between an arguing Han and Leia, and he was not having a good time when that happened. Overeager and clumsy, after failing Alliance basic training multiple times and being rejected from every other branch of the Alliance, he was a kitchen worker and runner on Echo Base. He didn’t appreciate how essential such support staff was, and he yearned to be a rebel hero. He believed in the self help novel Be Your Best Self, which was basically about self confidence and manifestation. He was an extremely skilled runner, and was familiar with all parts of Echo Base, including tunnels that were created during the construction process but were no longer used.
He had a crush on the tauntaun handler Jordan Smythe and arranged his schedule to ensure that he would be the one delivering him caf. Despite Jordan flirting with him, he was too anxious to show reciprocation. During the evacuation of Echo Base, Chase used his knowledge of the base’s layout to save medical staff from a cave in. Then, he found Jordan who refused to leave his favorite tauntaun, Sunshine, behind. Together, they rode through the tunnels of Echo Base to reach the last evacuation transport. Upon boarding the transport, Jordan kissed Chase.
Bonus, he also had a crush on Han Solo which only stoked his anger about all the cool hero stuff Han got to do and how annoying his will-they-won’t-they thing with Leia was.
Er Dal/Ferize | Identity: alien transgender and poly | Media: The High Republic Phase II
Er Dal and Ferize Kesserine members of the Path of the Open Hand, a gecko-like species. They are born without sex differentiation, and approximately 40% of them mature into egg-bearers, with the being’s will playing a role. In Basic, egg bearers like Ferize use she/her pronouns, but human genders weren’t actually applicable. They formed a triad with the Kesserine Fel Ix. The three of them also had five newly hatched children. During a flash-flood on Dalna, the family was saved with the help of Jedi Padawan Kevmo Zink. After the Battle of Jedha, Fel Ix was chosen for a special mission to disrupt communications in the Dalna sector. Er Dal and Ferize were last seen on the Gaze Electric saying goodbye to their partner and warning him against the treachery of the Jedi. In the chaos of the Night of Sorrow, they and their children went missing. Fel Ix helped the Jedi prevent a space battle aspect of the Night and told them everything he new so they could help him find his family.
Er Dal spent his whole childhood traveling the galaxy, and when he met Fel Ix as he was about to undergo his coming of age ceremony, the young Kesserine decided to run away with him and see the galaxy. Later, they met Ferize, who had already joined the Path of the Open Hand. She offered them the deeper meaning of religion, and they joined her and the Path.
