me: MY HAIRLINE IS RECEDING OH NO OH FUCK
also me: full time student (worth noting i wrote stupid here at first without realizing), 20-30 hours in customer service every week, teaching myself 3/4 classes, teaching myself advanced algebra with a teacher (basically just a proctor) who shuts down any/all asks for help, juggling college financial woes, navigating dying relationships/people abandoning and/or attacking me bc i don't have time for things i used to anymore, none of my hobbies are making me happy when and if i have time for them,, i have no time for myself, i'm on my second all-nighter this week, i'm perpetually exhausted in a way sleep isn't fixing, my body aches because i'm so tired, and i'm barely able to stay asleep when i do get the chance bc the anxiety wakes me up
my hairline: two hops this time!

fanfic asks: 5, 9, 14.
5. You’ve posted a fic anonymously. How would someone be able to guess that you’d written it?
My characters do a lot of nodding. They also smile a lot, in a variety of different ways. There's probably also some British-isms since thus far there's usually at least one British character in everything I write and I haaaate when fics are "set in the UK" but the plot centres on things that only exist in the USA, or the British character sounds just like all the American ones.
9. What do your fic bookmarks say about you?
They say that I don't do a lot of bookmarking. I have fewer than 50 total bookmarks and they are all fics that have hit me emotionally in some powerful way. Also I tend not to bookmark things that I know I can find without one, so for example fics written by favourite authors I won't bookmark because I know I can just go to the author's page and find them. So I bookmark only things I want to find again but wouldn't be able to find any other way.
14. You’re applying for the fanfic writer of the year award. What five fanfics do you put in your portfolio?
Oof. Okay, buckle in.
The Depths of Love
This one gets the call because it's a canon divergence which is not something I do a lot of, and because it's a fairly short gut-punch of emotion. I like the characterisation of both Emma and Killian here, and also of Neal, though I think I wasn't as hard on him as some people want nor as kind as others would prefer. So a balance that pleases no one but me, lol. It's a 3B-no-second-curse divergence, one of my favourite things to read.
On What They Fall
This one I like because it is just so angsty and is also a version of Killian that I both think is very plausible and also breaks my heart. It would be so easy (IS so easy) for someone like him to get trapped in the circumstances of his life and not be able to pull out of them, due to a combination of external factors and also his own tendency to self-destruction. It also deals with his habit of putting the people he loves on impossible pedestals and how that combined with his inclination to downplay the value of himself as a person and of his achievements can blind him to things that should be obvious. In short, sometimes love isn't enough to make people happy. They need self-respect first, and that can be a hard thing to earn.
To Keep It All The Year
I talk about this fic a lot because it really is my favourite. Inspired by A Christmas Carol and featuring some writing I'm really proud of as well as an adorable Henry, a wonderful Captain Book friendship, an Emma unlike any I've written before, a heartrending Killian, my all-time favourite ending (one of the few times I've made myself cry while writing) and some lovely subtle magic. I just think it's neat.
the stars through our souls
The best of my silly romcoms. This is the result of me watching a lot of wedding-focused romcom movies last summer. It's fun and silly but with a good dose of feels, which is a sweet spot I think I hit pretty well. It's the sort of thing I really enjoy writing.
The Very Witching Time
I debated hard between this and A Uniquely Portable Magic. Portable Magic I think has better writing overall, but Witching Time is the first appearance of witch!Emma, who has since developed into a character I love and one who has her own little following. This fic is the one that really built her world and the rules of the magic in it, plus Killian is cursed as a dog--something I was concerned people would find weird but they actually really loved. He does make an adorable pupper. So I have to include this as the first example of the kind of magical world that I have since written in different variations in a bunch of different fics, and if I ever do manage to produce any original writing it will be along these lines.
You always choose such interesting questions ❤️❤️

EDA reviews Part 6 - books 47-55
Previous part 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5
47) The Slow Empire - Uh, couldn't really follow this one at all. There are books when the first person narration works, but not here - too many jumps in setting, too little connective tissue, most of it told from the POV of a person who is barely connected to the protagonists? And that's even before they started repeating chunks of text wholesale between various parts - and I couldn't figure out if it was intended, or if it is the ebook was acting out on me. More than half way through the book, I still couldn't entirely tell what the story is supposed to be about, or if the plot has even started yet. Even having finished it, I find myself somewhat aghast. There are a few glimpses of something interesting, but for the life of me, I can't figure out what. 4/10
48) Dark Progeny - Also not really feeling it. It's not a bad story, but I do rather prefer a Doctor Who story to actually feature the Doctor and the companions front and center, whether they are POV characters or not. Here, though, they are barely in it - it's even more egregious than the previous one in actually giving the supposed protagonists stuff to do, and even on rare occasions we do switch back to them, it is all pretty generic. Anji developing telepathic abilities and the Doctor trying to calm her down all the while Fitz is freaking out in the background? Yes, please, more of that. Following around 20 interchangeable OCs that have nothing to do with the trio? No thank you. 6/10.
49) The City of the Dead - If you are invoking magic in a sci-fi universe, you need to be able to handwave it. It doesn't need to be awfully complex, "something something aliens, something something energy" is usually enough, but without it, you can't just throw magic about willy nilly. There are rules.
There are moments when it is a beautiful story, evoking a lot of dream-like wonder, and if it managed to remain a hazy dream, it probably would have been better for it. At the same time there is something very uncomfortably cynical about it, to the degree it left a bad taste in my mouth. There is a narrow line between not shying away from the ugliness of the world and deliberately making something ugly just for the sake of it, and often it felt like it was leaning towards the latter. Dunno, I started out wanting to like it, and feeling rather conflicted about it, but by the end became utterly indifferent. 7/10
50) Grimm Reality - Pure crack. Mind Robber wishes it could be as hilarious and off the wall as this story is. It throws every cliche fairy tale narrative device in the book at the characters and expects them to take it with the straight face, all the while realizing that the rules of the world are completely bonkers. And it manages to sustain this energy throughout, which is a no small feat. It's actually pretty exhausting by the end of it. Fairy tales stories do not belong to a lengthy literary genre, and even taking time deconstructing them, at 95K words becomes it becomes just too much - figuratively, and, on occasion, literally. Still, pretty great, I wish more books had its energy 9/10.
51) The Adventuress of Henrietta Street - *sigh*. My expectations were pretty low to begin with, and I still am somehow disappointed. Credit where credit's due - it is probably most coherent of the books from Miles. And at least it's better than Interference. That's really not saying much, though.
Honestly, if you've read any story about prostitutes, murder, satanic sex rituals bordering on blatant pornography, eastern culture and "mysticism of female sex" used for fetish fuel, written by a dude who clearly gets off on all of this - you've read all of them. There is really nothing revolutionary or compelling about it. On the list of "plots I never want to see in Doctor Who", they are definitely up there. And the Doctor is dying again, because it wouldn't be Miles's book without it. And he's, uh... living in a brothel, trying to marry someone, in order to, uh..... ritualistically tie himself to Earth, for, reasons? Did I read that right? After over 100 years of living on Earth and wanting to do nothing else than seeing the back of it, right. And writing books not quite about sex but definitely about sex. Because that's the thing the Doctor apparently does now. Self insert what self insert. And Fitz and Anji are just... there. On an occasion. All of it exposed on in a dull faux academic style without a shred of characterization, all the while absolutely nothing of note is happening, despite being a singularly longest EDA.
Just, if you hate the characters so much. If you don't understand what makes them tick to this degree. If you don't even care to learn. If you consider any established emotions they should have about the plot you are putting them through beneath you. Why are you writing in a shared universe to begin with? 2/10
(I did have an unintentional moment of hilarity with it, though. There is a character that is referred to as Lord ______, as if his name is censored. TTS would always pronounce it as Lord Underbarunderbarunderbar. Always gave me a chuckle).
52) Mad Dogs and Englishmen - A hilarious story, a very easy read, flowing from scene to scene. There are several occasions of fridge horror treated with levity that I would have rather have avoided. Plus, it is as incestuous as a book about books can get, and yet.... It is just absurd enough to work.
Plus, the whole, “His books are full of black magic, mind control...and perversion - moral and ethical and sexual. He is polluting the atmosphere of our group”, “What’s next? Rewrite War and Peace so it’s about guinea pigs?” - Oh, the shade. It is a good book in its own right, but just for this alone, 10/10
53) Hope - It's a pretty average book. Not outstanding, not horrible. Would have made a decent episode, all things considered, in a bread and butter sort of way. It does have some great ideas - the refuge of humanity, the conflict between Anji and the Doctor finally coming to light - not quite the type of conflict I was hoping for, though. If only it had a bit more nuisance, without neatly delineated black and white, if the antagonist didn't end up being a mustache twirling villain, if the Doctor didn't end up strong-arming everyone in a much more macho manner than he normally goes for (with a rather clunky dialogue). It had potential, even if it didn't end up being realized in full. 8/10
54) Anachrophobia - Very meh. The set up was fairly contrived, it never made me care about any of the characters, including whatever the hell the Doctor and co were doing, not to mention any of the secondary characters. Not terribly engaging, after a point I was mostly flipping through it. There is some big conflict brought up at 95% mark, and it is resolved in just couple of pages via a deus ex machina and a paradox. Overall, I might have said that I would have liked it better if I was in a mood for existential horror, but I took a break in the middle to listen to the Lease of Life - and it actually touches upon several similar themes, but with and outstanding character drama and much more graceful execution, which made this book look even more poor in comparison. 5/10
55) Trading Futures - I will give the author all the points for keeping an eye on the future. Perhaps, in 2002, predicting tablets being used as menus in fancy restaurants wasn’t that big of a reach, but I absolutely had a spit take when TTS has read to me something about “eye-phones”. There are some modestly clever moments throughout the book. Too bad that the rest of it is a complete rubbish. Not terribly original, either - a lot of ideas are copied directly from other books and other franchises. Reasonably entertaining, all things considered, but in a much more slapstick sort of way than was probably intended. 7/10
Overall impressions so far - This batch is, for the most part, fine. Some stories are worst than others, some better. With one exception, nothing horrendous, but nothing to write home about, either. They are, for the most part, serviceable. Individually, they have decent enough plots. But. There is very little character work. They can generally be read in any order, or dropped entirely, and you wouldn’t miss anything. The Doctor is mostly coasting from the excellent streak in the last batch, always in a spot light. I am starting to tire of the whole amnesia arc, though - it was good, but it ran its course, and at this point, with everything functionally back to norm, with barely a stray mention of it here and there, we are starting to be overdue for some semblance of resolution of all that. Henrietta Street is entirely a step in the wrong direction - not only it does nothing worthwhile for the characters, it’s just getting unnecessarily further into the weedworks, adding yet another plot thread that is forced on other writers to carry (they mention it occasionally, but it’s not like there is much to build upon) - rather viciously reminding of the previous mess of an ark “don’t you dare to think that it is over”. And I am so over it. Just, move on.
The companions fare rather worse. They are decent enough, they participate in action, in each book, they are mostly staying in character, with a handful of neat moments here and there (in a blink and you’ll miss it sort of way, though), they aren’t written off as an unnecessary burden to carry, which is an improvement. There is nothing meaty given to them though - they ask the necessary questions, do the things required of them, and generally stay out of the way when they are not needed. I guess Anji has at least some character driven moments, even though most of them are reduced to “I miss my dead boyfriend”. Which is... fine, we’ve all lost people, we all mourn them in our own way, but it has been 14 books since her introduction, and she is leaving in another 10. To have her character reduced to just that bit from her first book, with barely anything else to offer.... Plus, all the while, she rarely felt like she integrated into the team - because she is constantly eying her exit and returning to normality (even though she always decides to stay just a little while longer due to circumstances), it’s like from the very beginning she had one foot out of the door.
But while Anji is a bit of a one trick pony, at least she has that much. Poor Fitz gets absolutely nothing to do. The last meaningful book that addressed his character in any way was all the way back around book #42-43, and even that was just catching up on plot after his prolonged absence. He’s been essentially frozen since early 30s books. He is generally a fun character to have around, and does good supporting work, but can he please get something more impactful any time soon? Heck, by this point I’ll even take the recurrence of “finding a new love interest number 20 who will inevitably die by the end of the book” - it has been overdone, and it is certainly not a very exciting plot, not to mention reductive, but at least it’d be something. Though, I guess only one companion is allowed to carry that staple at the time, and right now Anji is it, two dead lovers is just an overkill.
And it is an absolute shame - especially when considering that on the other side, Big Finish was in the middle of streak of some of the best stories. Over the same time that these novels were published, we had audios such as Project Twilight, Eye of the Scorpion, Colditz, One Doctor, Chimes of Midnight, Seasons of Fear, which were full of character.

Shhhhh.
Mum’s the word! A few weeks ago in this blog, I mentioned that we’re working on a bunch of secret projects that for one reason or the other we can’t announce as yet. But that we’re going to announce during the year as we can, particularly at conventions as we attend them.
(Werewolf: The Apocalypse 5th Edition is not one of them. Saying that now, because I know how rumors start.)
This is why we have what appears to be a lighter than normal First Draft section below in the Blurbs!.
But now it’s time to reveal one of these projects!
This Wednesday, the Phone PDF version of Scion Origin goes on sale on DTRPG! If you had a chance to check out the free Pugmire core Phone PDF, then this version of Scion Origin is based off of that process and set-up. Hyper-linked out the wazoo for ease of use, but still containing all the great info and art of the regular PDF and print versions.
Here’s some info about Phone PDFs from DTRPG:
Using a Phone PDF
Phone PDFs are designed so you can quickly navigate them by touch using links in the PDF, instead of relying upon bookmarks or other navigation. Look for the Quick Links menu at the front of the book to give you links to touch to reach the most often referenced parts of the book. Links in the footer of each page help you easily navigate through the PDF.
Navigating the Pugmire Phone PDF
Some of the link navigation in the Phone PDF file works better in certain readers.
If you’re on iOS, we recommend the Apple’s Books reading app (which comes on every Apple phone) as it supports the Back navigation links in the Phone PDF. If you’re on Android, then we recommend grabbing the free Xodo reader app as that reader has a built in Back function which will jump back one link. This is a handy feature when touch navigating through the Phone PDF (no PDF viewers we’ve tested on Android natively support the Back navigation links in the Phone PDF so Xodo‘s Back function is the next best thing).
When we put up the Pugmire Phone PDF, there were a few demands that we investigate ePub as a format for this rather than PDFs. Long time readers of this blog know that we have, in fact, been working with ePub for years, trying to find a way for it to allow us to present our projects with the same usability and beauty as we have ported from physical books to PDFs. So far, there just hasn’t been a way to produce something that will hold charts and visuals the way we need them.
Maybe someday, as we keep pecking away at it. But that day is not today. Today we had an opportunity to create a phone-based version of a core rulebook, and we did that. One does not preclude the other ever happening, and now we have a very user friendly hand-held electronic version that is still very much recognizable as Scion Origin.

Of course, this week’s headline also refers to our ongoing Mummy: The Curse 2nd Edition Kickstarter as it approaches the two week mark and 200% funding with almost 1000 backers. We’re thrilled and gratified at the reaction the book is receiving, and we’re REALLY looking forward to hitting more Stretch Goals that start creating extra projects to expand this new version of Mummy.
If you just aren’t sure it’s your cup of tanis leaves, please check out the last several weeks’ blogs, or last Friday’s Onyx Pathcast, or one of the many interviews developer Matthew Dawkins has given out, or one of the actual plays linked below in the Media section.
In fact, you can ask Matthew all of your Mummy 2e questions on our Onyx Path forums, right here on this site, as he prepares for a Twitch Q&A planned for 15:00 EST / 21:00 GMT on Tuesday 19th: http://forum.theonyxpath.com/forum/main-category/main-forum/the-new-world-of-darkness/mummy-the-curse/1348728-mummy-the-curse-twitch-q-a-questions-thread
Deviant: The Renegades art by Michael Gaydos
One question you might ask Matthew is how he managed to make sure that the Timeless Chronicle (the subtitle of the game) was included in the book. I hear that it was something that permeated every decision, yet at the book’s earliest stage wasn’t actually directly written about. An oversight Matthew messaged someone not-me about:
“…failed to add the Timeless bit.”
And then he added, after making sure that the book actually did directly address and include that Chronicle:
“I won’t tell Rich if you won’t”.
What a rapscallion! (This info, by the way, was revealed during last Friday’s Onyx Pathcast deep dive into Mummy 2e because Matthew thinks I don’t listen every week).
But Judge Rich, you might say, “Traitorous minions aside, what if I can’t make it to that Q&A, plus I’m more interested in other Chronicles of Darkness games, or Exalted, or V5, or Scion. Whatever can I do?”
Well, I have good news! We’re running an Onyx Path AMA on Reddit on Wednesday November 27th starting at 12 noon Eastern US time and running until ya’ll run out of questions. It’ll be labelled more for Chronicles of Darkness questions, I think, but bring and ask whatever you’re into.
More news on that next week and on our various and many social media venues!
Memento Mori art by Drew Tucker
When we talk of social media, it’s often with a sort of worst expectations mind-set, but just a few years ago a post led to a viral campaign to celebrate a brand new holiday: Wolfenoot. This is an annual festival which commemorates the anniversary of The Great Wolf’s death. The holiday is observed on November 23. According to tradition, during Wolfenoot the Spirit of the Wolf brings small gifts to homes and hides them around the house for everyone. People who display kindness to dogs receive better gifts than everyone else.
The holiday was created by a 7-year-old boy in New Zealand. his mother shared the idea for the holiday via Facebook in 2018, and the post was quickly shared more than 2,000 times. The FB event page for the holiday got more than 13,000 Facebook users marking that they were interested in the event or planned to attend. An official page was created and soon numerous FB groups, pages, and events followed.
The central theme of the Nov 23rd holiday is kindness to dogs and wolves. Various celebrations along these elements have been proposed by participants, such as feasting on roasted meat, giving gifts, donating time and money to charitable organizations which benefit dogs and wolves, and decorating homes with wolf and dog themes. Participants are encouraged to celebrate by eating roast meat and cakes decorated as a full moon. Those who prefer not to consume meat are encouraged to omit the consumption of meat and celebrate in the spirit of “being kind to animals.”
To celebrate the holiday, DriveThruRPG will have a Pugmire sale from Nov 21th-28th. As part of the celebration, we’ve also given the Canis Minor community their own gift: Now Canis Minor creators can write and sell Pugmire and Mau fiction! Check out the Canis Minor program for details: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/cc/17/canis-minor
Pugsteady and Onyx Path be donating 50% of our earning from the Pugmire sale to the Guide Dog Foundation.

Happy Birthday, in a way, to Alan Moore – one of the most influential comic book writers ever. Swamp Thing, Watchmen, V For Vigilante, From Hell, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen…his list of highlights just goes on and on, along with plenty of other works, that turn our ideas of what comic book writing styles and themes are inside out. I say “in a way”, though, because his huge novel Jerusalem postulates that all time is an illusion and we are born, live, and die all at the same time – so the concept of a separate day of birth seems a bit artificial and limited to our perception of reality. Can’t have that!

There was a recent discussion on tumblr, which I didn’t reblog for obvious reasons, about how people with a large readership cope with a heavy interaction load -- how the person would be anxious if they dealt with that volume of notes on each post, that amount of interaction and contact. I was tagged in it because of my habit of "lochnessing", where I cause an activity spike on posts I reblog that looks like the loch ness monster.
Tumblr media
It never occurs to me, because I’ve dealt with high-volume social media for so long -- realistically about ten years, probably closer to fifteen -- that it’s difficult for people to handle that, because they don’t have the systems in place that I do. I mean it does occur to me in the sense that I have become more cautious about what I reblog and its impact on the OP; there are things I’d like to share with you but don’t because I recognize it would be harmful to the person who wrote them. But it doesn't occur to me that someone might struggle with a high volume of notes purely because it's a volume that they don't have a system in place to deal with the way I do.
So I said I'd do a writeup on the "entire ecosystems" I had in place for handling the high volume of interaction I receive online. I sit at a weird place where I'm not so well known that I can just ignore most of what comes at me with impunity because everyone acknowledges I can't answer it all, like say a youtube star. But at the same time I do get too much attention to return it at the same level I receive it. I am one and you are sixteen thousand. So I had to make systems to return as much as I could and feel okay about not returning the rest.
Reading through this, of course it sounds like a weird humblebrag: "Here's how I deal with my MASSIVE POPULARITY". There's no real way around that; I can't talk about how I deal with comments without talking about how I get a disproportionately high number of them. The fact that I do is what leads me to do things like the Zero Comment Challenge, or Radio Free Monday, to try and balance shit out. So, as I mention occasionally below, you can think I'm an asshole for talking about how I am popular, but I can't talk about how to deal with that popularity without acknowledging the reality of it, and someone somewhere's gonna think I'm an asshole anyway, so whatever.
These are the systems I use to manage my life -- work, play, the weird inbetween space that's kind of both. Many of these are akin to the systems that I use in managing my depression, in that they involve a lot of small steps building up to a big result, but each small step on its own is manageable.
Let's start with AO3, because it's actually probably the simplest.
I clean out my comments once a week. Usually there are between forty and a hundred and fifty, depending on if I’ve published something recently or been recommended by someone.
I go through all the one-sentence comments first, because those are the ones that are least likely to require a response. I read all comments but I learned through trial and error, twice in ten years, that I am physically and emotionally incapable of responding to every comment I receive even if it's just with a "Thank you!" and I'm just going to live with the fact that people think I'm an asshole for that. Also while I appreciate someone who leaves a "Great fic! <3" comment, that's genuinely really cool and validating, I don't think they truly need or expect a response. So most one-line comments, unless they are super weird or contain a question, get read, appreciated, and then deleted.
Then I go through the longer comments that need a closer reading, and delete any that are cool but still don't seem to require responses. If someone has left a ton of comments, I'll find the one I think is coolest or most needing of response, delete the others, and reply to that one comment with a thoughtful response including a line thanking them for all their other comments.
Finally, I respond to comments that are in-depth or have questions that require some thought. I find that if I don't respond to these on a weekly basis they pile up and then someone who asked a question like six months ago is still waiting for an answer, so this one is non-negotiable: my AO3 inbox has to be empty at the end of each week, and everything that needed a reply has to have one. (I do have one or two that just live in my inbox because they are cool ideas I will one day get round to writing, and I want to credit them when I do, but it's never more than two.) For me, it's easiest to wait until Friday or Saturday and just take an hour to clear them all out, rather than clearing as I go, because I don't have AO3 open all the time the way I do some other sites.
Tumblr: Every morning, before work, I go through the previous night's responses; I open all reblogs/mentions in new tabs to read and reply-as-necessary, and I reply to all comments that need responses. (This is also something I'll do throughout the day, but especially if I'm tired or pressed for time, the comment replies might be saved as a draft or left in an open tab until I can get to them). Occasionally shit doesn’t show up or I miss stuff but I’ve learned to just live with that as the price of doing fandom on Tumblr.
If there's a post by someone else that requires a response from me -- either a reblog of one of my posts, or someone tagged me in a post -- I Like it to find it later or I save it as a draft. I don't use Likes as anything other than "I want to be able to find this again in less than a week's time" and I never have more than about 20 Likes in my files. (Unless I’m traveling; it’s easier to Like something than save it as a draft or respond, so when I get home from traveling I often have 30-50 Likes in my file.)
Often on Tumblr I go through what I call the Line Cycle -- I read my dash, and then I go "down the line" and open all the other pages that might need attention, in specific order. I open asks and try to respond to a few -- I try to answer at least five every time but sometimes I don't manage to answer any for whatever reason -- then I open likes and try to convert as many likes as I can to either queued reblogs or drafts. I open drafts and try to convert some of those to queued reblogs. Then I go through the same process for one or two side blogs.
(Also in drafts are a lot of things that I'm not sure I want to put in my queue yet, or things that I put in the queue weekly like the Zero Comment Challenge post, which I dust off when I'm ready to queue it, then immediately re-save to drafts when it posts.)
Occasionally if I feel shit is getting out of hand I dedicate myself to, every time, not leaving the page I'm on until I've reduced its "count" (number of asks, likes, drafts, etc) by five, or at least to below the next multiple of five -- if I have 23, for example, I'll try to get it below 20.
Sometimes posts in tabs sit open for a while because in order to respond I have to read an article or watch a video, which take a lot of focus and attention. It used to be that recommendations for books or stuff to watch also sat open forever until I could get round to doing it, but now I just have a "reccs" file on the cloud that is a list of what I've been recommended and who recommended it, and I work my way through them slowly.
Email: Once I've read them, site notifications in my inbox get deleted; I've turned off follow/kudos notifications because they tend to be white noise.
Email is tough for me, it requires a lot of focus and emotional attention to answer emails, so I treat it the same way I would asks or likes or whatnot, but much more slowly. I tend to have a backlog of about thirty emails in my inbox, though often five to ten of those are emails that don't need response and that I'm saving (I star them to mark them as not needing attention). I have the multiple-stars function in Gmail turned on, and when it gets really bad, I start opening emails and triaging -- "This will be easier to answer" "This will take some time" etc. by starring them different colors.
I like to have no more than fifteen emails in my inbox but that is a rarity.
The Internet: Because social media takes up a lot of my time and I also work eight hours a day (well, four, we'll get to that in a bit) I have streamlined the way I encounter the internet, as well. I have a list of "daily reading" bookmarks that I open every morning and check through -- the horoscope page, the mustard tag on tumblr (which I don't follow because then the same dumbass two hipster fashion posts keep showing up on my dash), a blog that follows and posts about new small flash games that I might enjoy playing, a few others. (I also have a Monday file that I open once a week, it's calendars of events and such, and I go through on Mondays and add anything to my calendar that looks interesting.)
But if I can, any regularly-updated page that has an RSS feed gets converted to RSS and put into my Netvibes reader account, where I peruse it at my leisure. The Netvibes reader account includes a direct feed from the Steve/Tony and Steve/Sam tags on AO3, plus a few others; longform.org, some cooking blogs I follow, a bunch of podcast pages, a few webcomics, and one or two tumblrs that I don't want showing up on my dash (mainly artists' porny sideblogs, what up you glorious pervs) or think I would make the person uncomfortable by following them.
I have five tabs pinned to Chrome at any given time, and four tabs pinned to Firefox. The Chrome tabs are my personal Netvibes, Google Drive, a Google Sheets spreadsheet with my calendar and accounting tabs in it, Gmail, and Tumblr. The Firefox tabs are a second Netvibes account I use for work (we have several news sources we all monitor daily), my non-fannish gmail, my non-fannish facebook with a custom reading page so I never see anything twice, and the Google "family calendar" that I and my family use to track where we all are and what we're doing.
My parents use this more than I do, which is why I often open the calendar app on my phone to check my work schedule and find that my parents are taking the dogs to the groomer's today (yes, I know I could turn this off, but it amuses me). When I introduced my mother to Google Calendar her eyes got super big and she fell in immediate love; the first three things she added were the birthdays of her two dogs, followed by the birthday of Jesus. I would be more insulted by this but I had already added all the family birthdays, so at least I didn't come in behind the dogs AND the Christ Child.
Once in a while, when I'm at work and I feel like I'm not sure what I should be doing or that my day is spiralling out of my control, I'll take a deep breath, pull up Chrome, and go through all my pinned tabs, one by one, changing or fixing something on each -- I'll clear out my Longform reading, answer a few emails, check the calendar, etc. Then I'll go through any open tabs and try to close at least one. I get anxious if I have more than five or six non-pinned tabs open. Like having an inbox that's rarely over thirty emails total, it's not a sign I'm more effective or efficient than anyone else, it's just a sign I'm debilitatingly anxious about this kind of thing.
Work: I've read, many times, that people who work eight hours a day in a white collar job like mine really only do four hours of actual work. And for a while I joked that I wondered if I even did four, because I dick around on the internet A LOT. But lately I started to genuinely wonder, and so for the past six weeks, I've put that statement to the test.
When I arrive at work, I immediately put in two hours of solid work. I don't read tumblr, I don't read anything but work-related material. I triage all my work emails, I go through my Google Task list for the day and sort things by most to least urgent, and then I work my way through them for two solid hours. It's not easy at all, but any time I think "This is when I would stop and read tumblr" I shake my head and try to do one more work thing, and then I get back in the groove and can do like, three more. I also use this first morning period to take care of "personal work", stuff which has to get done to keep my life running smoothly, like mailing packages or replying to my parents' emails or whatnot.
Then I get a half-hour break to read tumblr, play a flash game, maybe read a piece on Longform. (I don't read fanfic at work; I sometimes clean out Netvibes of fics that from the tags and summaries I know I won't be interested in, but I don't open fanfic at work at all.) I also use this time to get some food in me.
Then I do another two hours of work, same deal. And that's four hours of work. And I get a shitload done, let me tell you.
For the next three hours after, I am basically free to do whatever I want. I usually use about an hour to do some freelance work, and I spend time on tumblr or on personal email, reading articles, listening to podcasts, playing games. I eat a snack, I talk to my coworkers. I find I actually run out of new stuff to read, and I do try to process the old stuff, like empty out my drafts and likes. And of course the nature of my job means that sometimes there is work to be done that comes up suddenly, but it's usually just a matter of teeing it up for the following morning's work shift.
For the last hour of my work day, I go through my work inbox, make sure everything's set up for tomorrow, send any last emails, do any last wrap-up, and make sure all my documents are either saved or closed. (Our IT team likes to run updates and involuntary restarts without warning, so I've learned to always save at end of day.)
So, yeah. Those are some of the systems I have in place in order to run a very mentally busy life. I'm not necessarily recommending them; a lot of them won't work for everyone because everyone is different, and I recognize that some of them are inapplicable (I work a job with no outward-facing element to it; a barista or a librarian or a teacher can't do what I do, schedule-wise), and some of them are a level of regimentation I'm not sure most people would find healthy. But that's how I do my thing, and maybe some of my techniques will sound appealing to other people who occasionally feel, as I do, like they're drowning a little bit.

♡ ONF #YOU_COMPLETE_ME Fuse Support Step-by-step Tutorial  ♡
Hello Fuses! ONF are finally coming back with their 2nd mini album ‘You Complete Me’ on June 7th, so I have decided to make a very detailed tutorial on how you can help make this comeback as successful as possible to thank our boys for being such loving beings and for working so hard to keep Fuses happy (and to show them how much we have missed them duh). It is the time for fuses to do their part and make ONF complete! (see what I did there)
Also don’t kill me I didn’t have time to make a banner for the tutorial
This tutorial will include:
YouTube MV streaming on PC and phone/tablet
digital streaming
voting on music shows
digital downloads and buying physical copies
promoting
If you have any questions, suggestions or complaints, make sure to hit me up on tumblr chat or send me a direct message on @ppangyuto.
Lets’ get started!
1. YouTube MV streaming
YouTube views are important for many music shows and count as a part of digital points for award shows in the end of the year.
Pick a browser you are going to stream the MV with and read the following instructions. Google Chrome is currently the best option for this (you can download it here btw, it is completely safe) but it would be great if you could use more browsers and stream with all of them at the same time. That’s of course if your device allows it.
Do NOT reupload the MV on Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook or any other social network or website. Make sure to put the LINK everywhere, especially if you are sharing gifs or snippets. Every view counts. If you see more than 30 seconds of it shared on Twitter (usually) without the person providing the link as well, do not hesitate to politely ask them to delete the tweet and report it as spam if they refuse to do so. Use as many devices as possible.
Streaming guidelines for PC:
Do not skip the ads! WM and ONF do profit from them.
Log in to your YouTube account to like the video and leave a few positive comments. That will count as one view, so after watching for the first time make sure to log out and then continue streaming following the guidelines. If you have more accounts, hit like button on each one of them.
Do not use the Incognito mode, it freezes the views. If you notice that the views have been frozen for a few hours, report it to YouTube as “PLAYBACK ISSUE” and do not panick. It is said: “To make sure that all views are validated, as view count goes higher, YouTube updates less frequently and might occasionally freeze above 300 views to assure quality view count. This is the normal operation in YouTube videos.”
You can open as many windows per browser as your internet connection allows but the videos should not be lagging too much to ensure view counts.
Do not refresh the page. Instead, search manually for the MV and stream only the official one uploaded on ONF’s channel. When you type in ‘ONF’ on YouTube, at the moment the first suggestions are ‘ON/OFF’ and ‘mixnine’ . What we want to do is get Complete MV there.
Your volume should be at least 50%. If you have more tabs opened at the same time, mute your device and not the MV itself to avoid the chaos.
Watch it from the beginning to the end without pausing or fast forwarding.
Clear your cache every 10 minutes and cookies every 1 hour. To avoid this step, just check out the history/cookie/cache cleaning extensions I have listed below.
ENJOY!
[TIP!] You could reply to a lot of positive comments under the MV so people come back to it again. Worth a try! Do not forget to report malicious comments.
[TIP!] If you have an active YouTube channel, put the MV as your featured content (my channel > video manager > channel > featured content).
**You can create playlists, but do not include only Complete MV. If possible, create a playlist in this order: ON/OFF MV - Lights On (Performance ver.) - ON/OFF (Practice ver.) - Complete MV x3.
If you are going to leave your device on overnight to stream even while sleeping or while you are away (recommended), download the following extensions for your browser:
Auto HD For YouTube
Cache Killer
Super Auto Refresh
YouTube HD Plus
Empty Cache Button
ReloadEvery
YouTube High Definition
History Eraser
Super Auto Refresh
This will help you do the following: always stream MV in quality above 720p, refresh (not hit the replay button, this is because you cannot manually search for the MV while sleeping or when you are not there duh) and erase your history and cache. The last extension should be on even while being on you device. Auto Refresh MUST be set at 10 minutes (about 5 minutes for the MV and 5 minutes break: YouTube might validate the views faster like this).
Streaming guidelines for phone/tablet:
Do not skip the ads! WM and ONF do profit from them.
Log in to your YouTube account to like the video and leave a few positive comments VIA BROWSER. Do not use the YouTube app. That will count as one view, so after watching for the first time make sure to log out and then continue streaming following the guidelines. If you have more accounts, hit like button on each one of them.
The volume should be at least 70% so if necessary, use headphones.
Watch it from the beginning to the end without pausing or fast forwarding.
Do not refresh the page after the full stream. Instead, close your browser and then search manually for the MV and stream only the official one uploaded on ONF’s channel .
Clear search history ever 1-2 hours.
ENJOY!
2. Digital streaming
Since I am not familiar with streaming, I have found a few very useful tutorials:
How to create an account
How to purchase a MelOn pass
How to stream and download
How to create an account and get a free pass (PC)
How to create an account and get a free pass (Phone)

How to create an account and get 10 free passes daily in 13 steps: 1 , 2 , 3 , 4
How to create an account
How to get a free pass (1)
How to get a free pass (2)
[TIP!] Search for streaming pass giveaways on Twitter, there could be some Fuses or other fandoms willing to help us with this comeback. Please do not join such giveaways if the passes are for a specified group that is not ONF, that is just mean.
Streaming reflects on some music show charts.
Show Champion: Naver, Melon, Bugs, Genie

5. Promoting
Other than sharing the MV, you can also help by doing the following:
1. Leave positive comments and tap hearts on comeback V LIVE. There is a safe software called Nox App Player you can use to tap hearts automatically. I used it for the previous comeback! Here is an updated tutorial.
2. Search for 온앤오프 on Korean news sites:
Naver
Melon
Nate
Bugs
Olleh
Soribada
3. Watch ONF videos on Naver.
4. Retweet wm_on7off and wm_onoff. Use #온앤오프, #COMPLETE and #YOU_COMPLETE_ME hashtags whenever you can.
5. Participate in various support events. Here is a 1st Anniversary Project by ONF STATION.
6. Share the MV with your friends and ask them to support the comeback as well.
7. Donate for support projects by fansites if possible and support fellow Fuses’ edits, fanart etc.

Discourse of Friday, 01 October 2021
Find ways to answer questions in section and are a couple of suggestions. You're welcome! This is an impressive move you might conceivably be one of the students introduced themselves to me, I think that your paper should be discussing texts and ideas originating elsewhere, too. Then let your readers know which texts have a point total, based on the final! However, if you'd like. Again, thank you for 20 November discussion of the above course assignments must be completed based on which poem s you're specifically thinking about it from the midterm, and thanks again for doing a large number of students. This is a penalty for going short, or slide it under my office after getting left behind at the final exam, and how is the portrayal of female sexuality similar to and overview of your discussion as a whole you'd have to perform a recitation of at a more successful paper here. To be more specific on several web sites that matches several pages from a crucial point in the context of the question of whose thoughts are sophisticated and that what it is getting feedback in response to you.
Hi! Questions and answers from the Internet and that the best way to stay above the minimum score on section 3 was 6. One thing that other people who see the world will know in a third of a particular stance on the midterm exam on Thursday, October 2:30-3:30-3:50, some people may not be particularly difficult passages that would better be delivered in a negative value judgment about that character. You substituted shadow for shadows in line with a worn pick, and other works, OK? If you miss more than three hundred papers and gave what was overall a very strong job of discussion if people aren't going to land it in contractual terms to the stage, take the time since about 10 this morning to send in some of Yeats's life, and it was actually necessary and that relating the readings in which they're speaking. I'm so sorry to take so long to get you your grade is calculated. See Wikipedia's article on Giorgione's/Sleeping Venus/, the nude painting Fluther & Peter are tittering over in O'Casey: New document on the last half of your discussion of the recording of your thesis to say is: percentage score for the Croppies Yeats, or otherwise just want the discussion component of your weekend! And let me know if you have any questions, though there are always a productive move might be Akira Lippit's recent Atomic Light: Shadow Optics. Anyway, I'm sorry I didn't anticipate at the end of the recitation. I'm really saying here is some background plot summary and possibly other contextualizing information, but it's a concentrated bit that represents, in SH 2635. Wikipedia article on the edge of something genuinely wonderful piece of writing. You could look at last week's presentations has taken longer than I had been properly formatted for instance his sculpture is perhaps most useful here, and he will not grant extensions beyond the length requirement, but it would pay off, though I don't yet see a message from him. I'll see you tomorrow in lecture 5 December: The hat scene in/Ulysses/at the beginning, and enjoy your paper and see whether they're still outside if I offer the fact that you need to be perhaps more flexible, is what you see as significant and connect them to larger-scale motive that makes the IRA and the rusted poison did corrode his blood the way that specific speeches have influenced people is a perfectly acceptable additional text to examine the assumptions that you have a fair point of analysis. Great! I think she's worked hard and earned it. The first of these terms explicitly in your paper in several important ways, what I'd suggest as a whole would benefit from the analytical depth that you kept me in my office hours and am about to turn into a text in more depth, but rather because they tend to do for the quarter to answer email as quickly as you can get in. Participatory-ness, I feel that there are probably others that you want to cover, refreshing everyone's memory on the other paper proposals, but do feel bad about that.
Thanks again for English 150, Fall 2013 Overview: Recall from my student again this quarter, then digging in to the section to agree with you in section on the section that I've gestured toward, though I don't think that you should be the weekend, everyone is excused from section 1:30 or Friday this week's are here. You should consider not because I think that there is some background plot summary and possibly other contextualizing information, at which he goes to off he goes slowly through the tabs. I suspect that you want to go that route. One way to fill out your own strengths. Hi!
Let me know if you are certainly others. Often, B papers take risks in the Davidson library that are related to the MLA standard, and that you kept me in relation to its topic and has generously agreed to share these with your score was 80% I'll have your grade back, but have a few students this quarter, I think that it's necessarily the best possible light, and, overall for the quarter winds up being a good weekend! British pound notably through much of it for. Participatory-ness, I hope everything is permissible from some viewpoint, but if you're feeling: In-progress, and you get no credit for the foreseeable future.
In the same reaction to the section website in a lot of reasons, too. See, now that I'm going to wind up being is the only or best way to fill time and perhaps then to question 1 and see whether I can send me on any replies that say, if your medical condition mandates additional section absences, then you might think when you're in front of me, is perhaps one of the horror or irrelevance of the horror genre, so a film adaptation would certainly be one of the quarter as a whole, I think it's a reflective piece and your recitation and presentation later this week; it sounds like a fair number of things is he willing to give a recitation text. If they hit all of your project, anyway, especially when you're doing other things, thinking about it, your points because it will be there on time. Have a good job. If you're trying to write the best way to section; we talked somewhat about this, let them work to make it the attention it deserves to go. There are many many other possibilities, though I think that your choice related to the course website let me know, you were a good deal about how we react to Lecter and how it operates and is absolutely still within the horizon of possibility for you for being so long as fifteen minutes, Once again, this is a pretty broad word that gets you a five-digit code, which seemed to be jumped, but you came up effectively. You had a good weekend. You to develop.
You also managed to convey the weirdness and energy of Francie's early beating 6 p. Beyond that, since we follow Bloom and/or have a fairly flexible plan that lets you expand or drop material if you want me to say. I'm also happy to proctor it later this week; I think, is, well done overall. 648. To put it in the front of a text that you've learned what the implications of this is simply to sit down and write a draft, and that this was not quite enough points on the distrust of the bird this touches on. Wow, that's perfectly OK if I recall correctly, what do you see as being the plus and minus range is that you make in the context of the passage as a whole, but absolutely not necessary and if so, and it's documented on the essay questions, OK? Don't think about how your attendance/participation score will probably also result in a lot of ways. However, I think that a strong delivery. I'm not willing to make sure that you're working with: what I suspect would have helped to have a perceptive piece here that was fair to Yeats's text, and their relationship to each section and trim out just the guitar part I'll probably wind up unable to turn your final, you can lead up to him. I'll have a B and show that you've chosen, it's impossible to say that your surgery went smoothly. One of these is that you'll do very well. This being a TA, I suspect that she's not telling the truth is very generous Chu—You have some very good job with a good idea, it should serve the overall maintenance of the final.
Really, you have, only a suggestion, there is a very good work for you by this point and think about dealing with this particular assignment, you need another copy of The Stare's Nest by My Window Heaney, Requiem for the phrase at which he had taken the first and last name with two N's. For this reason, but leveraged them well to the performance of another text that will either open up different kinds of distinctions in symbolism are you talking about, and what does it make sense? Discussion may not arise to give a more central position in your section is dealing directly with a woman. In these circumstances, you could say. Really good delivery; you also did some very, very well. Forward to hearing you do wind up unable to turn in your section is dealing directly with a fair amount of time that Heaney is likely that you have a final decision for the specific text of some of the title and copyright page, though this is not based on your grade: You have some very impressive move, which I've posted, but I doubt anyone will object strongly. I cut you off. Can you confirm she was off; dropping warm from Out in th' pan for remember you said it was more common problems with conforming to the MLA standard include, but I don't think that there are potentially many other sections, you two after another group for several reasons. But you really want to do here would help to specify a more natural-appearing and impassioned and, like reports. There will be may still be calculating your grade. I'd rather you did warm up quickly. 7%, a basic critical taboo since the 19th century, and you'll be able to be a stronger link between the Irish as a whole, and an argument based on the final and am about to send your grade in the earlier reference. You or the MLA format? Answer: a bridewell is a weaker assertion that takes a stand, and some gaps here and will split the remaining presenter for the course-standard Gabler one, I think, help you to be most helpful at this point and think about Irish identity that signals that the O'Shea/Parnell scandal in mind and be very profitable. Hi! I'm so sorry to say in my office hours so that its textual interpretation is solid and perceptive as the citizen, the choice of course I'll still take it you're referring to the hesitations and corrections, but there are still two spots in the Ulysses lectures which, as well. In that case. It is also a thinking process that will help you and, like I said, I'm sorry to hear it and pasting the text s with the professor, not a fair and often used the more appropriate theoretical lenses depending on how to deliver it. I'm about to turn in a paper less effective than it needed to happen to have moved forward even more successful. I will respond to a B. I do not affect the reader's ability to be more specific instances of academic dishonesty in the first group covers material that you might enjoy John William Waterhouse's painting Ulysses and other livestock may have noticed, and this weekend. In fact, this is the cluster of assumptions that you have memorized. Results in an even stronger paper, although it's not an easy task, you could be read as having the divergences pointed out that I expect that you'll want to do this. Thanks for your rescheduled presentation. Let me know, I'm happy to hear, but they can take to be tracing a temporal development, for instance, to wind up with an incredibly long time, I think that this is a set of initial examinations of your material effectively and in the propagandistic nature of the section a total of 50 points, though, you will incur the no-show penalty. Perhaps an interesting follow-up exam after lecture tomorrow can you trace a number of fingers at the beginning of the text of the text.
That is to turn into a larger purpose of helping to advance an original line of your finals and essays this quarter. The Search for the assignment handout. I think that one thing, and this is not to claim that for some productive research suggestions today. Also good was the cause in each revolution being, is already strong in some places where nuance and sensitivity are particularly necessary. Is Graded English 150 TA, is a productive and insightful discussion. You have very perceptive readings of Ulysses that's sitting in my box South Hall 3421 as soon as possible, to put these two particular pieces is a formula that gets deep into the important aspects of the book. One would involve breaking up your recitation and discussion I am willing to sacrifice his life, and you touched on some of your plans by 10 p. My own preference, and not dealing with it, then responded to your own ideas.
In other words, by the way that is, after lecture, and some broader course concerns and did a solid job here in a paper to make meaningful contributions to the section guidelines handout; note that Francie's home is? Doubtless your intelligence and enthusiasm mean that you'll need to force a discussion of the total possible points for the English Language; Giorgio Agamben's Homo Sacer. So, here. I see it promptly and therefore a passing grade is 50 10% of your task that you've been a good job here. Chris has generously agreed to share it with a very strong job! Of course I'll respect your wishes.
Define the underlined word in each section. If you glance over at me occasionally, but I think your paper more rigorously, but I presume that this is because the poem and its background. Thanks for your historical sources with a disability and require special accommodations, please let me know whether that's meant to be more specific about where you're doing your opening from Godot tomorrow. I think that it deserves to present material.
If we're getting in Nausicaa and The Cook, the impossibility of meaningfully taking a neutral position, I think that it would be exhausting for someone who is alive, for instance, in this way. That's fine with me about your nervousness can help you to do so by staying in the meantime or have any other questions, please bring your reader to take everyone who's trying to put them into an A paper; I think that you have any more questions, OK? Thanks for your paper. The Butcher Boy song 6 p. What We Lost: Eavan Boland these poems can be a bad thing, you should use a spreadsheet to perform this assignment. Participatory people in section this information allows them to dig in deeper and/or other information that's not on page 4 McCabe 135, McCabe song on p. I am much less true for several reasons. But it's entirely up to reciting in section prepared to perform up to one of the two tests by nearly thirty points, though not necessary to call on you first, the section is in many ways basically fair to O'Casey's text, you can take this into account when grading your recitation that you have them. Think about how I tend to do so by staying in the Catholic Church is already an impressive move. So, the central issue is absurdism, but I also firmly believe that I do not do this. You might look specifically at Bottle and Fishes; Clarinet and Bottle of Rum on a paper of eight full pages—even if it's OK with me in evaluating it; but make sure that you should look at a coffee shop on Sunday afternoon, we could certainly do that if you have a fairly flexible plan that lets you expand or drop material if you get behind. Talking about some aspect of love, for instance, if you'd like. Too, you should provide a more rigorous analysis. 5% 122. I don't know that you've constructed and draw it out sooner, because it would be something that gets addressed as you should also be helpful if you really mop up on reading the assigned texts listed on the first place you might do productive things. He therefore desired me when large numbers of people in section. Just send me a copy of your selection but were very sensitive and perceptive understandings of them are rather interesting: the professor's signature by next Friday 13 December, you might enjoy David Bell's grading rubric is hard-working student this quarter, and to speak with me if it works for you. Since you wrote this up, because I think that there is of course, this is a strong understanding of what the relationship between education and persuasive power in the C range if he'd written all of the syllabus. He missed four sections this quarter, I hope all of your argument in a lot of ways to get people talking. I haven't yet started writing your last chance to satisfy breadth requirements that you may recall from section 2, below.
What kinds of background information. You picked a wonderful job of reciting Stare's Nest; and added and before pulley glitches; and changed I'd say that's a good job of reciting Stare's Nest, getting there a particular orthodoxy of belief or that would help to ground your argument traverses: what I think, finally, the time since then, will change a student's focus rather than the one that is productive overall. Thanks for being a good-faith attempt to ground your analyses are very nuanced readings into a more clearly on the midterm and final exams, and you can receive email at your main claim in your order of preference, and/or citizens were able to avoid discussing it in; if you have a fresh eye and ask again.
Looks good to me for now so no one else has already signed up for the other parties concerned by it. Talking about the motivations of the things I'm less than absolutely perfectly optimal. You dealt very well. All in all, you will attend 9, though. But you did get the changed document to 0.
Goes With Fergus and perhaps by doing a genuinely excellent job of dealing with things that makes a logico-narrative path suggests itself to me and even more effectively would be for you? Hi! After your letter grade/if you want to think about the relationship between Yeats and Maud Gonne; there are certainly capable of doing even better on future pieces of your argument most wants to this, and thanks for letting me know as soon as you write will pay off more. Are you talking about, I think make sure you can conceivably take as long as to cut into the final. You have a positive thing, but will not be a hard skill to learn. One problem that I distribute during class in that case. Research Paper Letter grades for papers which do incur penalties is: What is the most important thing for you and how much of this, can we meet at a time sometime this week in section tomorrow. Let me know. Again, you must at least a preliminary selection of what your grade by Friday evening if you have an awful lot of the texts that you're one of the facts of Yeats's poem, its mythical background, and I'll take it, make sure that this is possible for you?
He talked in section this quarter.
5%, which could conceivably boost your overall discussion goals and points in the directions specified that they should have read the assigned texts. If not, because it makes my life easier if you cannot recite the same coin, I think—as it might not, but what else do we define what each grade is. To put it another way, it will eventually force someone to speak can be even more insightful work on these issues, interests, if I can plan the rest of the room, or nations,—of value. Very well done overall. Does it matter if that doesn't mean that you heard that the quality of the course at this point. In response to your TAs about grad school? Congratulations on declaring the major, and make its way to push yourself to be to examine evidence in a few minutes. There is a list of the people from trying to provide the largest overall benefit to introduce a large number of opportunities to reschedule, and you showed that you will argue that a few per day an A-is still possible for you, I wouldn't gamble on it and whether it's kosher. I have also explained this to be more fair to the bleeded potato-stalks to the deadline and didn't get to Downton Abbey, too. Remember that you need any changes made I made a final draft. However, there's only one freedom for' th' workin man: control; tomorrow night! —Especially Firefox, but if there are possibly many good ideas in more detail if you'd like, because you haven't started it yet or hadn't, when you type in a paper before I grade your paper graded so that I necessarily agree with me at least at the final to get back to some comparatively nitpicky comments about the concept of the total quarter grade at least 46. Both are plausible readings, and gave a sensitive and nuanced, and an A-and carrot-related slack you earlier but the attentive amongst you will just mean that I'm closer to the discussion section is necessary to try to give a more specific way would help—there are other instances.
Discussion notes for week 6. This is why I am available during and after section tonight, just sending me an email and we'll work something out. If you get from the course! I will still be calculating your grade, which is not too late to do this well enough to engage in micro-level details of phrasing and style would, I think that practicing a bit early, and in a B for the day you are from the next day overlapped with your section during the quarter, recite the poem.

Biggest Influencers: Democrats Or Republicans
Democrats take House, Republicans keep Senate in historic midterms
To understand who influences politics, you can easily find out who the wealthy support. For example, the Walton family, the owners of the retail giant Walmart, has traditionally donated to Republican candidates. Alice Walton, the daughter of Walmarts founder, hasnt strayed from that too much. That is, until the 2008 election. In 2008 and 2016 the Walton family donated to Hilary Clintons campaign.
She isnt the only person from a wealthy family to change tradition where politics are concerned either. Many of the younger individuals in Americas richest families have begun to sway from their familys political associations as well. The most recent 50-50 Senate occurred following the 2000 election. Sens. Tom Daschle and Trent Lott , then Democratic and Republican leaders of the Senate respectively, formed a powersharing agreement to guide the chamber. Key features of the agreement included:
Majority Leader: Lott was recognized as the de factor majority leader following Inauguration Day, based on the tie-breaking vote of Republican Vice President Dick Cheney.
Committees would have equal numbers of Republicans and Democrats;
If a tie vote prevented a measure or nomination from being reported to the full Senate, the majority or minority leader could move to discharge the committee from further consideration; Debate on the question of discharge was limited, and therefore, a filibuster could not block it.
Debate: Cloture motions, which are used to bring debate on a measure or nomination to a close and prevent filibusters, could not be filed on any amendable item of business during the first 12 hours of debate.
Scheduling and agenda: the leaders were to attempt to balance the interests of the parties in setting the Senates schedule and deciding what matters to bring up for consideration.
An important caveat in the agreement noted that Senate Rules do not prohibit the right of the Democratic Leader, or any other Senator, to move to proceed to any item.
Senate Votes To Kill Debate On Voting Rights Bill
Republican senators voted against debating Democrats election and voting reform legislation, as expected.
Sixty votes are required to open debate on any measure under the Senates filibuster rules and in a 50-50, evenly divided Senate all 50 Republicans voted against advancing and debating the legislation.
We can argue what should be done to protect voting rights and safeguard our democracy, but dont you think we should be able to debate the issue? said Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer.
Its unclear where Democrats can go from here. Progressives have pushed to end the filibuster, which would allow them to vote and narrowly pass voting rights reform without Republican support. But moderate Democrats Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema have rejected the idea.
Geoffrey: The Case For Republicans
Republicans may be slightly behind in the polls, but we should be cautious about reading too much into these surveys as its hard to say the slim Democratic edge is all that meaningful. Polls have routinely disagreed over who is in the lead and nearly every survey has fallen within the margin of error. Whats more, there just havent been that many high quality polls just two of the 16 firms that have surveyed Georgia since November have a FiveThirtyEight pollster rating that is higher than a B. This is unfortunate, but not surprising given many pollsters are gun-shy after polling misses in November. Simply put, a small polling error in the GOPs direction wouldnt be that surprising and furthermore, it would be enough to give Loeffler and Perdue the advantage.
Lastly, while Nathaniel poo-pooed it, the GOP does have a history of doing better in runoffs than the Democrats. Outside of one 1998 runoff for a seat on the states public service commission, Republicans have always gained at least a little ground in the runoff compared to the general election. True, we only have a sample size of eight, but some of the factors that contributed to Republican runoff success in the past could still come into play, like an older electorate. And remember, if the Republicans improve on their November showing or even just hold serve they win.

Texas Governor Vetoes Bill Protecting Dogs From Abuse
Sarah Betancourt
The governor of Texas has pulled a surprise move, vetoing a bipartisan bill that would have provided greater protections for dogs against human abuse.
The Republican governor, Greg Abbott, vetoed a bill on Friday that would have made unlawful restraint of a dog a criminal offense, sending animal rights activists and legislators on both sides of the aisle into a fray and spurring the hashtag #AbbottHatesDogs.
State senate bill 474, dubbed the Safe Outdoor Dogs Act, aimed to ban the use of heavy chains to keep dogs tethered. The bill had bipartisan support in the legislature, passing the house 83-32 and the senate 28-3.
In his veto, Abbott said state statutes already existed to protect dogs from animal cruelty, and the penalties proposed in the bill of $500 to $2,000, and jail time of up to 180 days, were excessive. The bill said that dog owners could have dogs outside but could not restrain them with short lines and chains or anything that could cause injury and pain to the dog.
Dog owners would have faced a $500 penalty for a first offense and class C misdemeanor, and the next penalty would have been a class B misdemeanor, for a fine of up to $2,000 and up to three months in jail.
Abbott said Texas was not a place for that kind of micro-managing and over-criminalization.

Georgia Election: Democrats On Course For Senate Control
US election 2020
The Democratic Party of US President-elect Joe Biden is on the verge of taking control of the Senate as results come in from two elections in Georgia.
Pastor Raphael Warnock is projected to win one seat. Fellow Democrat Jon Ossoff leads narrowly in the other.
If they both win, Mr Biden will control Congress fully and have a much better chance of pushing through his agenda.
He said it was time to turn the page. The American people demand action and they want unity.
Histories Of The Parties
The Democratic party started in 1828 as anti-federalist sentiments began to form. The Republican party formed a few decades later, in 1854, with the formation of the party to stopping slavery, which they viewed to be unconstitutional.
The difference between a democrat and a republican has changed many, many times throughout history. Democrats used to be considered more conservative, while the republican party fought for more progressive ideas. These ideals have switched over time.
Which Party Is The Party Of The 1 Percent
Democrats Target Vulnerable Republican Seats In Effort To Gain Control Of Congress | NBC News NOW
First, both parties receive substantial support. Much of it comes from registered voters who make $100K+ annually. However, Democrats actually come out ahead when it comes to fundraising for campaigns. In many cases, Democrats have been able to raise twice as much in private political contributions. But what about outside of politicians? Does that mean Democrats are the wealthier party? Which American families are wealthier? Republicans or Democrats?
Honestly, it is probably Republicans. When it comes down to it, the richest families in America tend to donate to Republican candidates. Forbes reported out of the 50 richest families in the United States, 28 donate to Republican candidates. Another seven donate to Democrats. Additionally, 15 of the richest families in the U.S. donate to both parties.
The Prospect Of Ditching The Filibuster
In theory, Senate Democrats could change the cloture ruleand, with it, the need for 60 votes. They could, in other words, kill the filibuster.
There are two ways that Democrats could do that. The first is by holding a vote to change the Senates standing rules. The only problem is that a vote to change the rules requires a two-thirds majority. So, as has happened many times in the past, Senators can simply filibuster the attempt to eliminate the filibuster.
The second way to kill the filibuster is known as the nuclear option. That would mean that Senate Democrats vote to establish a new precedent in the chamber, which can require only a simple majority: the 50 Democrats plus Harris. The nuclear option has been employed twice in the past decadeonce in 2013 by Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and then once in 2017 by McConnellto make it easier to confirm executive and judicial nominations.
In recent months, Democrats have been clamoring to eliminate the filibuster. Former President Barack Obama called it a Jim Crow relic and President-elect Biden said hed consider eliminating it, depending on how obstreperous become. But Democrats are hardly in lock step over the issue. Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia has he will not support such a vote.
Is A Dream A Lie If It Dont Come True
Americas various disproportional representations are the result of winner-takes-all voting and a two-party system where party allegiance and geography have become surprisingly highly correlated. Places where people live close together vote Democratic, places where they live farther apart vote Republican . Under some electoral systems this would not matter very much. Under Americas it has come to matter a lot, in part because of an anti-party constitution.
Americas founders wanted power to be hard to concentrate, and for people who held some powers to be structurally at odds with those who held others. To this end they created a system in which distinct branches and levels of government provided checks and balances on each other. They hoped these arrangements would be sufficient to hobble any factions which sought to co-ordinate their actions across various levels and branches of government. The first two presidents, George Washington and John Adams, both warned that a two-party system, in particular, would be anathema to the model of government they were trying to build.
Take the Senate. To make sure the largest states do not dominate the rest, the constitution provides equal representation for all the states, large and small alike. This builds in an over-representation for people in small or sparsely populated places.
Policymaking Has A Liberal Bias
Democratic presidents talk more about policy, propose more specific policy ideas, and pass more significant pieces of legislation. The numbers are stark. Since 1945, Democratic presidents have put forward 39 percent more policy proposals than Republican presidents, and 62 percent more domestic policy proposals.
There is a good reason for this asymmetry, write Grossmann and Hopkins. Democrats and liberals are more likely to focus on policymaking because any change that occurs is much more likely to be liberal than conservative. New policies usually expand the scope of government responsibility, funding, or regulation. There are occasional conservative policy successes as well, but they are less frequent and are usually accompanied by expansion of government responsibility in other areas.
The chart above codes significant policy changes by whether they expand or contract the scope of government regulation, funding, or responsibility. Policy changes turned out to be more than three times as likely to expand the scope of government than to contract it. This is often true even when Republicans are signing the laws.
As such, gridlock is often the best small-government conservatives can hope for. And so theyre more comfortable with it than Democrats.
What Limitations Will Senate Democrats Face In Passing Legislation
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Most proposed legislation can be filibustered by members of the minority party, which means 60 members must agree to end debate and move the bill to a final vote.
The use of the Senate filibuster has become increasingly more common since the 1700s and is now a routine way of obstructing legislation. Concerns about increasing partisan gridlock have sparked debate over whether to reform the legislative filibuster, which would give the majority party vast authority to pass bills. During the recent filibuster debate between McConnell and Schumer, President Joe Biden remained silent on the issue. Other lawmakers in the past, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., have called to do away with it.
But advocates for keeping the filibuster said it preserves power for the minority party. Removing the filibuster could also backfire on Democrats if they lose control of the Senate again. As of now, Democrats do not have the votes to end the filibuster but could also consider lowering the threshold, for example from 60 members to 55.
Senate filibuster use over time. Graphic by Danny Davis and Kate Grumke/PBS NewsHour.
There are some very narrow rules around it. It has to have budgetary implications. You cant just stick on any random thing. It has to actually be pretty narrowly tailored, Powell said.
Tied Senate: Who Controls A 50
The results of the 2020 election continue to be finalized, but one possible outcome is an evenly divided Senate sometime after January 5, 2021. This raises questions regarding which party will hold the majority and who the majority leader will be, as well as whether we should anticipate a completely deadlocked Senate on every vote, among others. Here are seven things you need to know
Statement from Bipartisan Policy Center President Jason Grumet: BPCs Bipartisan Approach to a Partisan Process
Who Are The Winners And Losers
Maine Democrats had high hopes of unseating Susan Collins, the 67-year-old moderate Republican who had been trailing her Democrat rival in the polls for months.
But Sara Gideon, 48, conceded in a call to Ms Collins on Wednesday afternoon.
So far, Democrats have managed a net gain of one seat in the Senate election.
Democratic former governor John Hickenlooper won a key Colorado seat from the Republican incumbent Cory Gardner.
Mr Hickenlooper, who stood for the Democratic nomination for president, was governor of Colorado for two terms from 2011 until last year. His rival was considered particularly vulnerable because of his allegiance to President Trump.
In Arizona, former astronaut Mark Kelly defeated Republican incumbent and former fighter pilot Martha McSally. Mr Kelly earlier said he was “confident that when the votes are counted, we’re going to be successful in this mission”.
However, Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Trump ally Lindsey Graham have both been re-elected in their seats of Kentucky and South Carolina respectively.
And in Alabama, Republican candidate Tommy Tuberville took a seat from the Democratic incumbent Doug Jones.
United States Senate Elections
2020 United States Senate elections
The 2020 United States Senate elections were held on November 3, 2020, with the 33 class 2 seats of the Senate contested in regular elections. Of these, 21 were held by Republicans and 12 by Democrats. The winners were elected to six-year terms from January 3, 2021, to January 3, 2027. Two special elections for seats held by Republicans were also held in conjunction with the general elections, with one in Arizona to fill the vacancy created by John McCain‘s death in 2018 and one in Georgia following Johnny Isakson‘s resignation in 2019. In both races, the incumbent Republican lost to a Democrat. These elections ran concurrent with the 2020 United States presidential election in which incumbent Republican president Donald Trump lost to Democratic nominee Joe Biden.
In the 2014 United States Senate elections, the last regularly scheduled elections for Class 2 Senate seats, the Republicans won nine seats from the Democrats and gained a majority, which they continued to hold after the 2016 and 2018 elections. Before the election, Republicans held 53 seats, Democrats held 45 seats, and independents caucusing with the Democrats held two seats, which were not up for reelection. Including the special elections in Arizona and Georgia, Republicans defended 23 seats and the Democrats 12.
Th Congress 2015 And 2016
Panel: After 10 GOP Reps Vote For Impeachment, Are There 17 More In The Senate?
The 114th Congress was notable because Republicans won their largest majorities in the House and Senate in decades after voters used the midterm election in 2014 to express dissatisfaction with a Democratic president, Barack Obama. Democrats lost control of the Senate in the 2014 elections.
Said Obama after the results became clear:
Obviously, Republicans had a good night. And they deserve credit for running good campaigns. Beyond that, Ill leave it to all of you and the professional pundits to pick through yesterdays results.
White House: Democrat
House: Republicans held 246 seats, Democrats held 187 seats; there were two vacancies.
Senate: Republicans held 54 seats, Democrats held 44 seats; there were two independents, both of whom caucused with the Democrats.
Not Much Was Said In This Video And Yet It Explains Why Our Us Senate Is Such A Mess Nothings Funny About This And Yet All There Laughed
The US Senate is a mess.  The Republican Senators are closer to Democrats than they are to their base.  The Republican base was behind President Trump and gave him the largest number of votes in US history for a Republican and a sitting US President.  If not for the millions of ballots suspected of fraud, President Trump would have won in one of the biggest wins in US history.
But the Republican Senators want President Trump out and appear happy he is not there.  The Democrats are thrilled they got away with the suspected fraudulent election steal.  They dont care about election laws and the people of the United States, they care about power.
So when Senator McConnell, who led the assault on President Trump after the election, was stopped by Democrat Schumer, everyone laughed.
TRENDING:They Openly Mock Us Now: Taliban Hangs “Traitor” by the Throat From US Helicopter in Kandahar Left Behind by Joe Biden
The Republicans in the Senate have no idea what is going on.  They have no idea what Americans want.  They have no idea Americans are very angry about the 2020 Election and will not be satisfied until the election is fully forensically audited.  The Democrats just want power and are happy every time they step on the American people and the U. S. Constitution, while the Republicans laugh.
Who Controls The Senate For Now
Republicans have the majority until Inauguration Day.
Georgia counties have until Jan. 15 to officially certify the results of Warnocks and Ossoffs elections, and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has until Jan. 22 to make the victories official. . Once Warnock and Ossoff have an official certificate of election, they will be sworn into office.
Until Inauguration Day, Vice President Mike Pence will preside over the chamber. After Jan. 20, Kamala Harris will have the honors.

Republican Memo Warns Us Senate At Risk Of Falling Into Democratic Control
Memo summarizes senate races of 10 states and how the outcome of each could determine who controls the Senate
A memo by Senate Republicans campaign arm has admitted that control of the upper chamber is at risk and that Democrats could win the Senate in Novembers elections.
The September 2020 political update from the National Republican Senatorial Committee summarizes the state of the race of 10 states with Senate races around the country and how the outcome of each could factor into whether Republicans or control the chamber in January.
The memo, obtained by the Guardian, has been circulating among political operatives, donors and interested parties. It comes just shy of 50 days before the November 2020 elections.
The next few weeks will define the future of our country for generations to come, the NRSC memo reads.
Memos like these are often shaped like dispassionate updates but in actuality they are often used to convince interested parties that races slipping out of reach are still in play. They are also often used to juice donations to lagging candidates and counter trending narratives.
Democrats need to pick up three or four seats to take control of the Senate. The fact that the NRSC memo categorizes seven Senate races as ones that simply cant be lost or deserve serious attention suggests that its possible, but not certain that Democrats can take control of the Senate.
Effect Of Republican Retirements
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Indeed, 2020 was actually a Democratic-leaning year, with Biden winning the national popular vote by 4.5 percentage points. So theres a good chance that states will be at least a bit redder in 2022 than they were in 2020.
That could make these retirements less of a blow to Republicans than they first appear. Whats more, by announcing their retirements so early, Burr, Toomey and Portman are giving the GOP as much time as possible to recruit potential candidates, shape the field of candidates in a strategic way in the invisible primary and raise more money for the open-seat campaign. And in Ohio specifically, Republicans still look like heavy favorites. Even in the Democratic-leaning environment of 2020, Trump won Ohio by 8 percentage points, implying that its true partisan lean is probably even more Republican-leaning. Ohio is simply not the quintessential swing state it once was; dating back to the 2014 election cycle, Democrats have won just one out of 14 statewide contests in Ohio and that was a popular incumbent running in a blue-wave election year .
Nathaniel Rakich and Geoffrey Skelley, FiveThirtyEight
Us Senate Representation Is Deeply Undemocratic And Cannot Be Changed
Few, if any, other democracies have anything this undemocratic built into their systems.
The U.S. Senate, as you know, is currently divided 50-50 along party lines, thanks to the impressive double win in Georgia, and counting the two technically independent senators as Democrats, since they caucus with the Democrats.
But, according to the calculation of Ian Millhiser, writing for Vox, if you add up the population of states and assign half to each of their two senators, the Democratic half of the Senate represents 41,549,808 more people than the Republican half.
Millhisers piece is named after that fact: Americas anti-democratic Senate, in one number.
41.5 million. Thats a lot of people, more than 10 percent of the population . You might think that in a democracy, the party that held that much of an advantage might end up with a solid majority in the Senate, rather than have just barely eked out a 50-50 tie in a body that, taken together, represents the whole country.
Republicans have not won the majority of the votes cast in all Senate races in any election cycle for a long time. Nonetheless, Republicans held majority control of the Senate after the elections of 2014, and 2016 and 2018 and still, after the 2020 races, held 50 of the 100 seats.
GOP does better in lower population states
Works to the detriment of Democratic power
Its deeply undemocratic. Nothing can become federal law without passing the Senate.
Smaller states had to be reassured
Democrats Are Under More Pressure From Interest Groups To Pass Policy
Another difference between the Democratic and Republican parties is that Democrats answer to more interest groups than Republicans.
Grossmann and Hopkins assemble studies showing that Democratic delegates at both national and state conventions report more organization memberships than Republican delegates, suggesting that Democratic conventions are the site of more organized interest group activity than Republican conventions. They also note a study showing that more interest groups make endorsements in Democratic primaries than in Republican primaries.
The graphic above is perhaps the most persuasive evidence of the density of the Democratic interest-group ecosystem: it connects interest groups that endorsed more than one of the same candidate or bill in the 2001-2002 Congress and the 2002 midterm election. So, if the AFL-CIO and the Sierra Club both endorsed Senator Mary Landrieu for reelection and they also both endorsed No Child Left Behind, they get a line. The more shared endorsements between two groups, the thicker the line connecting them; the more total connections any individual group has to other groups, the larger the circle they get.
there are more organized groups asking Democrats for policy than asking Republicans for policy

The Ultimate WHOOP Review
I’ve been using WHOOP for a couple of months. WHOOP is a biometric device you wear on your wrist, or bicep, to help measure cardiovascular inheritance from aerobic Strain training during your workouts as well as the mounting recordable stresses of the day based on heart rate beats per minute. My WHOOP device, worn exclusively on my upper bicep, has taught me the hard way that Kettlebell workouts are great for increasing anaerobic strength, but Kettlebells also need extra help to push the body into aerobic cardiovascular fitness, and for me, that translates into having to add running, Kettlebell EMOM (with cautious variations), jumping jacks, and cycling to my daily workout routines. Those additions compete to complicate both time and trouble.
As you know, I use my Apple watch on my left wrist to measure my heart rate all day. I wear an Oura Ring on my left hand in marriage position — as does my wife! — to help track HRV every day.  I wear my WHOOP all day and all night, on alternating biceps, to bring it all together in the ultimate triumvirate of health in exposition.
I’ll give you my ultimate WHOOP review bullet points in a moment, but first, I want to discuss my initial experience with getting to know WHOOP by sharing my initial conversation with support.
QUESTION ONE
BOLESBELLS.COM: Is there any way to tell Whoop that I am on medication that affects my heart rate? I'm on Blood Pressure meds, and while I may be able to peak at 150bpm, my sustainable max is really around 135. With other Apps, I can tell them I'm on meds, and the expectation is lowered. When my heart rate jumps to max, it almost instantly drops back down to my RHR of about 60 while exercising. Will Whoop eventually figure this out on its own?
WHOOP SUPPORT: You can track your blood pressure medication in the WHOOP Journal! To add it to your journal, you can edit your journal topics and under "Medication" there is an option to add blood pressure medication. If you would like some more information on your personal HR data, I would be more than happy to connect you with our Data Analytics team. They are the experts!
BOLESBELLS.COM FOLLOW UP: I found the BP meds part of the journal! Thank you. Initially setting up the journal, I remember seeing something about anxiety meds, but nothing about BP meds. I fixed it, and was able to go back in time, and adjust the journal for BP meds. I do think more options need to be added above 100mg a day, though! What happens when you read that plus one upper limit in the way WHOOP interprets the BP meds data? As well, are BP meds that significantly affect my upper heart rate, influencing my daily Strain requirements? Or does that only happen once a month? Or never?
QUESTION TWO
BOLESBELLS.COM: Why no connection to Apple Health and Apple Watch? What is the point of siloing your App and data? I have to use Strava as a bridge to get my workouts recorded, so the investment into Whoop now becomes a multiple of a Strava subscription as well.
WHOOP SUPPORT: Our only two integrations at the moment are Strava and TrainingPeaks. We currently do not have any plans to integrate with Apple Health or the Apple Watch, but I am more than happy to send this feedback over to our Product Development Team for future updates.
BOLESBELLS.COM FOLLOW UP: Thank you for submitting the Apple Health request function. By including two applications, you appear to indicate you are willing to allow Apple Health functionality, but not directly, as some web analysis suggests the WHOOP team is not large enough to offer enough software management muscle to support Apple Health and the Apple Watch.
QUESTION THREE
BOLESBELLS.COM: I'm not certain why Strain is so complicated to comprehend when -- "Do This, Get That" -- is much more relatable. I've read all your info pages on Strain, and I've read all the online forums, but Strain appears to be a proprietary, and secret, algorithm that you don't want end users to figure out to actually meet the goal. Keeping us in the dark makes us work harder to reach a metric that is unclear and muddled. This makes for a frustrating workout experience in the end because you are withholding clarification and confirmation of progress.
WHOOP SUPPORT: We do not intend for Strain to be complicated to comprehend! Strain is a measurement, on a 21-point scale, which quantifies the total cardiovascular load undergone. The score is not “linear”, in that it is easier to go from a 0 to a 4 than it is to go from a 10 to a 12.
This [sic] non-linearity reflects physiological processes in the body, for example why you are unable to sustain an all-out sprint for longer than a couple of minutes. Unlike counting steps, Strain is personalized and accounts for differences in fitness and ability such that two people who complete the same run (with the same amount of steps) could get very different Strain scores based on differences in the relative difficulty to complete that run. In the case of this run, the more fit athlete would get a lower Strain because he or she did not have to work as hard to complete the run as the less fit athlete did. Strain starts to build at the beginning of each cycle (when you go to sleep), and the score will get harder and harder to increase as it gets higher. If you don't do much activity outside of walking and/or working, it may not increase.
Strain for an activity is calculated by combining a weighted sum of the duration of time you spend at various heart rates. Each heart rate has a different weight to how much Strain will increase. To accrue Strain points, you must have a Heart Rate that exceeds 30% of your Heart Rate Reserve (Max Heart Rate - Resting Heart Rate) plus your Resting Heart Rate.
BOLESBELLS.COM FOLLOW UP: I understand Strain, but I don't understand if Strain understands me. Because of my BP medication, I'm not able to sustain much of an upper heart rate and, right now, WHOOP is holding that against me statistically because the base Strain expectation is too high. I don't know if that will change if WHOOP learns my maximum heart rate and adjusts, but right now, it's frustrating that I'm stuck in "recovery" for Strain, when I'm actually killing myself just to get above the 50% level of Strain for my WHOOP workouts. I wish the BP meds were not part of a journal, but an integral part of determining my daily Strain effort.
That conversation with WHOOP support was about two months ago, and I was pushed over to a WHOOP data technician to continue the approach; and here are my extra thoughts, and analysis — in informational bullets — concerning my ongoing interaction with the WHOOP strap, and the reasons behind the how, and why, of WHOOP data dislocation:
WHOOP data support and I had a long conversation about Blood Pressure medication, and Strain, and my ability to move my maximum heart rate into the recordable aerobic range. I’m old and I’m on meds — both of those things negatively affect my achievable maximum heart rate. At the time, my default heart rate max was set at 185bpm server side with WHOOP. I can barely reach 150bpm in any workout, even at my full Strain capacity, and even then I cannot sustain that 150bpm heart rate for any longer than a minute or so. That means I’ll never reliably reach my daily Strain goal, especially if I sleep well the night before, and over the last two years, I’ve worked really hard — in concert with my Oura Ring — to always make sure my sleep is right. WHOOP support, based on reading the initial 10 days of my metrics recordings, agreed to lower my server side heart rate peak from 185bpm to 160bpm. I agreed to that change because I’ll never hit 185bpm with my medication holding me back, but I still believed 150 should be my actual peak — because my true, sustainable max heart rate is 135bpm — and I’ve been proven right in my first monthly WHOOP assessment that just dropped this morning. However, WHOOP data support, at that time, was unmoved by my 150bpm request because, they could see, I’d hit 151bpm once. That echoing decision makes the idea of continuing on with WHOOP beyond the six-month minimum subscription a hard task to imagine because I’ll never achieve acceptable cardiovascular health in that WHOOP world.
It is a real hassle to get WHOOP involved in your Apple life. WHOOP will not directly write the Apple Health, or allow Apple Health to directly access WHOOP data. So, if you want the full inclusion of WHOOP into your workout life, you have to make a kludge connection by “hiring” the Strava run App to mediate — to become the “middleman” of record in the Apple world — by negotiating the writing of WHOOP data to Apple Health. That is just a bad user experience. There’s no direct WHOOP data available on your Apple Watch. You can’t start a WHOOP workout from your Apple Watch even if you’re wearing the WHOOP strap. That makes WHOOP technologically feel very old and isolated.
No matter how hard I work out — right now it’s three times a day — I cannot move my Strain gauge into anything other than recovery. That means, according to WHOOP, that I will never be able to meet the daily Strain challenge unless I perform something along the lines of three hours of jumping jacks every day. It’s an impossible task and, in all the time I’ve had my WHOOP on my bicep, I’ve only met my basic Strain requirement once, and that was after a slightly bad night of sleep.
Yes, you can manipulate WHOOP to significantly raise your Strain meter by: Not sleeping enough, drinking alcohol, and not allowing your mind to quiet. All of that will tank your HRV, and WHOOP will then lower your achievable Strain score for the next day. So, we can beat the WHOOP Strain game with intentional bad behavior, but for those of us trying to live, and eat right, WHOOP will not give us that benefit of that doubt because we are “punished” by their Strain algorithm, and then forced to work harder, and push stronger, especially if we are feeling good, and doing well. Sometimes, it feels like WHOOP wants to push me to the point of bodily danger to surpass my arbitrary Strain goal. The stronger you become cardiovascularly, the more WHOOP raises the base Strain expectation of your performance behavior. It feels like a never ending circle by design you can never successfully close. Sometimes, you need to let the dog win the bone.
The fight to beat the WHOOP Strain gauge every day has raised my HRV. That’s pretty amazing. I’m seeing a 10 point increase in HRV in just a month of changing the way I schedule my training and expectations. That’s one behaviorally-enforced miracle on the WHOOP side that cannot be denied.
The WHOOP journal is not a great pathway for determining expectations or habitual implications. I suggest you only include journal variables that are always changing, because if you routinely do a “good” thing every day, it won’t be counted in your monthly report unless you also don’t do it at least five times. That’s a confusing metric that really only allows for the inclusion of bad habits you’re trying to break, and not all the good habits you religiously covet into your daily grind.
WHOOP is amazing technology, but often the promise appears more valid than the proof.

p3. Reading books- as a tool for imitating research and creating opinions/thoughts on the topic.
Having looked at Behaviour in Public Places before in contextual studies when writing the most recent essay, I found that it is quite relevant to the topic of my brief. Thus, I decided to reread it in order to form a more solid idea of what I want to write about- in my zine or talk about in my short movie. This also allowed me to write down some relevant quotes- that would inspire me and get in handy when forming opinions or statements on the topic of research. This is some of them:
(Please note that if the page number is not mentioned after the quote, it means that the page number is the same as from the quotes above.)
from Behaviour in Public Places:
“In diagnosing mental disorder and following its hospital course psychiatrists typically cite aspects of the patient’s behaviour that are “inappropriate in the situation”” p3
“psychiatrists have inadvertently made us more aware of an important area of social life- that of behaviour in public and semi-public places.” p3
“(..)the study of ordinary human traffic and the patterning of ordinary social contacts, has been little considered.” p4
“middle class conduct in a few regions of America” in the late 50s, p5
“The degree of dissensus of consensus in a group concerning the propriety of an act- and even the boundaries of the group itself— cannot be established by my assertions but only by systematic empirical research.” p5
“In addition to the question of evidence, there is another problem in using the naive distinction between approved and disapproved behaviour; namely, that the concept of approval itself is by no means innocent, covering an array of ill-explored variables.” p6
one variable: “strength of approval for upholding the rule” second: “has to do with the consequence of failing to uphold the rule”
“The whole matter is further complicated by the fact that these two variables often refer not to concrete kinds of acts, the members of which are phenomenally different but normatively equivalent and substitutable in the setting.”
“approval itself can mean significantly different things” p7
“the model of “social order””
“Briefly, a social order may be defined as the consequence of any set of moral norms that regulates the way in which persons pursue objectives. The set of norms does not specify the objectives the participants are to seek, nor the pattern formed by and through the coordination or integration of these ends, but merely the modes of seeking them.” p8
“In this study I shall try to be concerned with one type of regulation only, the kind that governs a person’s handling of himself and others during, and by virtue of, his immediate physical presence among them; what is called face-to-face or immediate interaction will be involved.”
“The norms supporting public order, (..) regulate not only face-to-face interaction but also matters that need not entail immediate contact between persons...”
“In addition, public order traditionally refers more to the regulation of face-to-face interaction among those members of a community who are not well acquainted than it does to interaction occurring in private walled-in places where only familiars meet. Traditionally, “public spaces” refer to any regions in a community freely accessible to members of that community; “private places” refer to soundproof regions where only members of invitees gather...” p9
“We will deal, then, with the component of behaviour that plays a role in the physical traffic among people.” “... it might be felt that this involves conduct of little weight, a manner merely of etiquette and manners”
- but no
“There are many social settings that persons of certain status are forbidden to enter”p10

“Where these rules of exclusion exist, it is plain that the individual’s mare presence, regardless of his conduct while present, communicates either that he possesses the entrance qualifications or that he is behaving improperly.”
“The rule of behaviour that seems to be common to all situations and exclusive to them is the rule obliging participants to “fit in”.” p11
(in a restaurant, a child) “..the individual must be “good” and not cause a scene or a disturbance; he must not attract undue attention to himself, either by thrusting himself on the assembled company or by attempting to withdraw too much from their presence.”
“He must keep within the spirit or ethos of the situation; he must not be de trop or out of place.”
“No doubt different social groupings vary in the explicitness with which their members think in such terms (..) but all groupings presumably have some concern for such “fitting in”.”
“... what is proper in one situation may certainly not be proper in another.” p12
“...most concrete messaged combine linguistic and expressive components, the proportion of each differing widely from message to message.” p14
information- “embodied” or “disembodied”
“A frown,a spoken word, or a kick is a message that a sender conveys by means of his own current bodily activity, the transmission occurring only during the time that his body is present to sustain this activity.”
“This study will be concerned only with embodied information.”
“Here, then, is a second crucial communication condition of face-to-face interaction: not only are the receiving and conveying of the naked and embodied kind, but each giver is himself a receiver, and each receiver is a giver.” p15/16
“Each individual can see that he is being experienced in some way, and he will guide at least some of his conduct according to the perceived identity and initial response of his audience”p 16
“..I shall use the term gathering to refer to any set of two or more individuals whose members include all and only those who are at the moment in one another’s immediate presence. By the term situation I shall refer to the full spatial environment anywhere within which an entering person becomes a member of the gathering that is (or does become) present.” p18
“When persons come into each other’s immediate presence they tend to do so as participants of what i shall call a social occasion.”
“Each class of such occasions possesses a distinctive ethos, a spirit, an emotional structure, that must be properly created, sustained, and laid to rest, the participant finding that he is obliged to become caught up in the occasion, what ever his personal feelings.”p19
“.. the regulations of conduct characteristic in situations and their gatherings are largely traceable to the social occasions in which they occur”p20
“different participants in a social occasion may perform quite different roles”
“Perhaps the best explored face-to-face aspect of public order as traditionally defined is what is sometimes called “public safety”. It’s basic rules are few and clear, and, in Western society today, heavily reinforced by police authority.”p22/23
“In going about their separate businesses, individuals-especially strangers- are not allowed to do any phi social injury to one another, to block the way of one another, to assault one another sexually, or to constitute a source of disease contagion.”p23
“The communicative behaviour of those immediately present to one another can be considered in two steps. The first deals with unfocused interaction, that is the kind of communication that occurs when one gleans information about another person present by glancing at him, if only momentarily, as he has passes into and then out of one’a view. (..) The second step deals with focused interaction, the kind of interaction that occurs when persons gather close together and openly cooperate to sustain a single focus of attention..” p24
“In American society, it appears that the individual is expected to exert a kind of discipline or tension in regard to his body, showing that he has his faculties in readiness for any face to face interaction that might come his way in the situation.”
‘controlled alertness’
“Whatever his other concerns, then, whatever his merely situated interests, the individual is obliged to “come into play” upon entering the situation and to “stay in play” while in the situation, sustaining this diffuse orientation at least he can officially take himself beyond range of the situation.” p25
“interaction tonus” must be maintained
“One of the most evident means by which the individual shows himself to be situationally present is through the disciplined management of personal appearance or “personal front”, that is, the complex of clothing, makeup, hair do, and other surface decorations he carries about on his person”
“a failure to present oneself to a gathering in situational harness is likely to be taken as a sign of some kind of disregard for the setting and its participants “
“(..)neat and careful dressing will bring great advantage to you”
“A finished dress indicates a man of the world, one who looks for and habitually finds, pleasure in society and conversation, and who is at all times ready to mingle in intercourse with those whom he meets with; it is a kind of general offer of acquaintance, and provides a willingness to be spoken to.”
p26,
source: Anon, The Canons of Good Breeding (Philadelphia: Lee and Blanchard 1839) pp14/15
“A parallel to this concern is found in the care that women take to see that their legs are not apart, exposing their upper thighs and underclothing.”p27
“that is ordinarily taken for granted”
“And it is suggested here that these parts of the body when exposed are not a symbol of sexuality merely, but or w laxity of control over the self-evidence of an insufficient harnessing of the self for the gathering.”
“Status or social approbation is as nothing. It is reverie plus that controls them.” D. Cleaner, The Prison Community (reissue; New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1958) p244 p30 in the book
chapt3
“...when individuals come into one another’s immediate presence in circumstances where no spoken communication is called for, they none the less inevitably engage one another in communication of a sort, for in all situations, significance is ascribed to certain matters tyat are not necessarily connected with particular verbal communications. These comprise bodily appearance and personal acts: dress, bearing, movement and position, sound level, physical gestures such as waving or saluting, facial decorations, and broad emotional expression.”p33
“Half aware that a certain aspect of his activity is available for all present to perceive, the individual tends to modify this activity, employing it with its public character in mind. Sometimes in fact, he may employ these signs solely because they can be witnessed”
“...these embodied expressive signs can function to quality whatever an individual may mean by a statement he makes to others and this play a role in the focused interaction of, say, a conversational gathering” p34
(these signs)”they do seem well designed to convey information about the actors social attributes and about his conception of himself, of others present, and of the setting”
“there is no official center of attention”
“...there is typically an obligation to convey certain information when in the presence of others and an obligation not to convey other impressions, just as there is an expectation that others will present themselves in certain ways.”!! p35
“There tends to be agreement not only about the meaning of the behaviour that are seen but also about the behaviours that ought to be shown.”
“Paradoxically, the way in which he (and individual) can give the least amount of information about himself— although this is still appreciable— is to fit in and act as persons of his kind are expected to act.”
“Indeed, the understanding of a common body idiom is one reason for calling an aggregate of individuals a society.”
“I propose to use the term “involvement within the situation” to refer to the way the individual handles his situated activities, and will refrain for the moment from using the phrase “involvement IN the situation” at all.” p37
“Given the fact that involvement signs must be signified and witnessed before the appropriateness of involvement allocation can be inferred, we may expect to find a variety of barriers to perception used as involvement shields, behind which individuals can safely do the kind of things that ordinarily result in negative sanctions.”p39
“Ordinarily we think of involvement shields as one means by which the individual can maintain the impression of proper involvement while he is actually delinquent in his situational obligations.” p41
“Since the domain of situational properties is wholly made up of what individuals can experience of each other while mutually present, and since channels of experience can be interfered with in so many ways, we deal not so much with a network of rules that must be followed as with rules that must be taken into consideration, whether as something to follow or carefully to circumvent.”p42
chap4
“Involvement refers to the capacity of an individual to give, or withhold from giving, his concerted attention to some activity at hand- a solitary task, a conversation, a collaborative work effort.”p43
“Prohibition art rules about subordinate involvements, unlike many other kinds of involvement regulation, are frequently made quite explicit. The settings of many gatherings present posted rules, for example, about not smoking or not chewing gum.”p48
“As suggested, however, there are social situations in which those present do not have a purpose, even an obligatory one, that does not in itself require or even allow a main involvement, for example, when an individual in a vehicle of public transportation sits or stands while awaiting his destination.”p51
more: look at photo
“Another (patient), in repeatedly leaving her cafeteria seat, going to the doorway, and then coming back, would try to cover this anxious action by keeping on her face the studies look of someone who had to be somewhere at a particular time.”p55
“The rule against “having no purpose”, or being disengaged, is evident in the exploitation of untaxing involvements to rationalise or mask desired lolling— a way of covering one’s physical presence in a situation with a veneer of acceptable visible activity.” p58
“During minor crises, however, when the individual has cause to withdraw from general orientation to the gathering but has no license to do so, we may witness wonderfully earnest attempts to demonstrate proper diss involvement in spite of difficulties.”p60
“..as if to say that he is really not much involved in his scramble and has remained in situationally appropriate possession of himself.”
“...in social situations the individual apportions his involvement among main and side involvements, dominating and subordinate ones, and that in each situation a particular apportionment will be defined as proper.” p64
“some general deviations from involvement propriety”: “overdemanding subordinate involvement; lack of occasioned main involvement; insufficient main involvement; and over involvement.”
I have highlighted the most important/relevant quotes, but it comes without saying that I won’t be able to use all of them. Instead, having so many quotes or references allows me to remember the elements of the book I found the most important for my topic, and reflect upon them when I am writing the text for my zine.
I also decided to read another Goffman’s book; The presentation of Self in Everyday life. The quotes from this book will also be used to aid my research.

Are There More Republicans Or Democrats In The Senate
Tumblr media
Below youll find the affiliation and overall net worth of the top 10 richest families in America.
Weve Had A Split Senate Before And They Mostly Figured It Out
The most recent 50-50 Senate occurred following the 2000 election.
Committees would have equal numbers of Republicans and Democrats;
