Underneath the Christmas Tree
...It’s a star to go atop the tree. It looks familiar to the North Star, like the one you saw the day that you met Yoriichi.

They said that the North Star, Polaris, was a guide for all who were lost.
Yoriichi wasn’t a man who got lost very often. This was simply because there was nowhere he could go, he had no destination. He was just wandering, letting life carry the weight of his feet as they tugged him forward and toward wherever he may end up next. This is why the North Star was irrelevant to a man like Yoriichi. He had no use of guidance.
But he still found himself following it at times. Seeing where it may take him- if he followed it long enough, it might just bring him to where he needs to be. This was, of course, superstitious at most and Yoriichi was aware that believing such a thing would only lead to another cliff somewhere. But when you have nowhere else to go, especially during these cold times full of snow, why not try and follow it?
The shining light in the sky brings Yoriichi into a lush forest painted blue with the atmosphere of night. The snow heavy on the tree branches and blanketed over the grassy ground was the easiest thing to see at this time of night- as dark as it was, the snow was still pure white and almost glistening like crystals. The slayer could feel cold wet seep into his tabi boots as he walked with his head tilted towards the sky. He’ll just have to wash them later, he supposes, whenever he decides to stop being childish tonight.
It’s a little longer until, just as he predicted, the star leads him to a snowy hill with no way of continuing forward unless he somehow had some rope to help him climb down several feet. But at the bottom of the cliff was only a chilly lake, so surely he’d have to somehow cross that, first. Yoriichi looks back up at the sky with a soft, tired sigh.
One day, it might take him somewhere.
“Oh- Hello,”
The slayer straightens at the sound of a voice behind him, his eyes still relaxed and slim as he looks over his shoulder. It’s a villager from the nearby town. He remembers seeing you before with a basket of apples, trying to haggle with one of the vendors to trade for oranges. He remembers a lot of things during his travels, so he’s not particularly surprised he’s run across you before. Though the chances of you remembering him are slim, considering you’ve never talked or made eye contact.
“I wasn’t aware anyone else knew this spot…” You slowly walk through the snow and to Yoriichi’s side, looking a bit hesitant as you look up at the sky like he was before. “It’s perfect for seeing the North Star, isn’t it?”
His eyes widen, just a fraction.
You turn to meet his gaze with a smile, and Yoriichi can see the stars shining in your eyes.
And he thinks, perhaps, this is what he was being led to this entire time.
