Fifth installment in the Kat watches all of Doctor Who in the most fucked up order anyone could come up with series. Order courtesy of @spaceymcspaceship
21) Deep Breath
Oh, a long boi.
I wrote this and then got sick for two days and didn’t actually watch anything. Then I watched Rings of Akhaten for # dwlockdown which was not at all in the order this was supposed to go so I won’t voice any opinions, but on a less story-focused note, Murray Gold is an excellent person and as a music major, I enjoyed a lot of the things he had to say about composing for DW and this episode (which is of course very music-centred) in general.
Anyway. It’s three days later, I am back and I have sweets, let’s fucking do this my fellas.
Here he comes, his hair is short and he is not to be fucked with.
“The not-me one” sounds funny but it’s so sweet actually. Like they’re the only two people in the universe. That is literally the only way a distinction between me and not me would make sense.
Gimme that lesbian moment, gang.
The Dinosaur speech is terrible, but it is making me teary eyed, fuck Moffat (but in a good way)
Young Twelve has big Thirteen energy
Strax is very relatable and I love and treasure him
The scarf is not stupid and I am extremely angry they felt the need to come for my gay son like that
They put so much time into mentioning he’s Scottish, it’s the new “It’s Christmas”
Jenna looks very good in historical outfits and that is all I will say on that
The horror feel of the lunch scene is so good - the creeping realization, the acting, the soundscape
“Do you have a children’s menu” This was the moment I fell in love with Twelve
Don’t worry king, I am admiring the efficiency even if no one else is
The breath-holding scene is amazingly executed: the music, the acting, the set design, the way it’s shot and cut… it just all comes together to this really amazing moment
The negotiation scene is so powerful as well - I’m not a big fan of the cut, but the dialogue is great
I also hate being wrong in public, but that’s life
It’s always the 51st century with these people innit
There are so many pretty shots
Is this chronologically the last time the Paternoster sees the Doctor up until now? Like, I know they see Eleven again in Demons Run, but I’m guessing that that would have been before in their timeline? So they just see this fresh Timelord fly off with Clara, who is kinda still a dead girl to them, and then they never come back? Man, that’s rough
These shots are all so good. I also wish to meet the set designer so they can stomp on me and crush me under their heel.
22) Nikola Tesla’s Night of Terror
Jodie is back and warms my heart. It might also be important to mention that I pulled an allnighter at this point and all future entries rightfully read like they were written by a crazed madman on crack cocaine.
I love this episode a lot because I love Tesla and I love Thirteen and honestly, what else do you need me to say
Smart brain: This is a well-structured episode that makes important points on creativity and self-worth which I personally, as an artist and also a human being, relate to and value
Sleep-deprived brain: Best group of friends ever run around and fight evil sexy Scorpion can I get a woohoo
The musical themes get me on a level that I cannot explain while sounding like a sane human being, so I would prefer not to
Oh, this is the first New York episode? That’s fun, I also see a lot of others coming up shortly. Maybe my next rewatch should be centered around location? That sounds like an even more shite order to watch doctor who in, so I’m gonna give that a go somewhen
Thirteen and Tesla bonding? That shit hurted
Unpopular opinion, but if Tesla had been better at naming stuff, it might have taken off
“Welcome, Nikola Tesla” with the very specific sound effect and the violins in the background will forever haunt my nightmares
I would die for Graham O’Brien
Thirteen as Tesla’s assistant? Wow, sexism is alive and well even in space
Team Cool Af Goggles for life
“A trail of blood and other people’s brilliance” is very good and I will continue to talk about it
“The future is mine” Believe me when I say I screamed
23) Human Nature
Ngl I’ve rewatched this one a lot recently so I’m a bit sick of it
Still a great story tho and brilliant in setting up the master arc
There seems to be a lot of outrage about these heterosexuals, but I honestly like them? Awkward and sweet and heart-breaking
The stethoscope mirroring Martha’s first episode? Don’t do this to me
Flashbacks are cleverly cut
Baines’ actor is so good, might fuck around and watch Brave New World just for him when it comes out
24) Family of Blood
Finally I don’t have to wait for a sequel, I could not have dealt
I was then promptly robed into disassembling a whole ass garden shed and took a long ass break
So many big emotions are going on, but I haven’t slept in 40 hours and I still need to set up a whole pathfinder character, so I’m just sitting here crying while trying to figure out racial feats
They sure be taking their time with the ending but I’m into it
25) The Unicorn and the Wasp
Was about to comment “Oh, finally some Tennant” because I forgot yesterday
But: finally some Donna
“Funny place to wear pearls” FuCK
I love Agatha Christie so much
Absolutely here for this Dickens shoutout
Nevermind the giant wasp, I love the dialogue here, and it’s it’s acted out amazingly
Oh, it’s the fucking scene, the stuff of meme and legend
The sequence at the end just gets me, y’all
Also this is such a good episode, I forgot to take notes again
“Onwards” yes indeed
The question whether or not there was a real wasp they used as a prop led me down a road of BBC confidentials that didn’t really answer anything but were still enjoyable so no time wasted
Then I watched New Earth and Gridlock for the lockdown, but that don’t count. All in all, a lot of good Tennant episodes in very little time.
