Grandpa is visiting us for Easter -> new family historical info just dropped: my great-grandfather's uncle apparently supported our 1831 uprising against Russia and died in Syberia*

*for anyone missing on the historical context here, the obvious corollary to a Pole is "after deportation"

#way further back than all the ww2 stories - should I make a post of them by the way? - but greatly interesting #the name's Cyprian Zabłocki btw and he had a successful chain of confectionery shops before that. apparently #on a completely different note #I never really thought of my grandfather as having lived through all of the American Civil Rights movement but he did and seems rather #enthusiastic about it. Strange because it was half the world away -- but I do know the communists *loved* to point out all of America's #failings so it was probably very emphasized #therese rambles #history #Poland

There is something about Alec Guinness - at any age - that reminds me a little of my grandda, who died over 10 years ago now, so it is nice to have the reminder.

#on a completely different note #I read some of m. m. kaye's murder/romance novels #(generally I'm more interested in the crimesolving than the romances #because she's good on suspense but all her female leads are interchangeable and besides I'm a disdainful lesbian)#and I recall that in one of them - published in the 50s - the male romantic lead was described as having an alec guinness vibe #an unexpected but touching glimpse into an era when a writer could evoke him as a goodlooking young man #one would probably not do that now because the reader would be most likely to first think of ben kenobi
