My Top 10 K-Dramas of 2020 - What’s Yours?

2020 has ended after feeling like it was never ending and K-Dramaland has once again brought us so many goodies this year. As per our blog’s tradition [For 2019 faves click here], below are my Top 10 favs of the year (my faves in alphabetical order so it might not be yours so please don’t judge). (For our blog’s 2020 music ratings, click here!)

My only specific criteria is that the show must have had started in 2020 to be considered a 2020 series but like last year, I have allowed one drama starting very late in 2019 to make the list.

Without further ado, check the list below!

Crash Landing On You (tvN/Netflix)

While it started in December 2019, “Crash Landing On You” is certainly the Rom-Com of the year that swept the world by storm. It was possibly the K-Drama most people knew about and everyone rejoiced when the leads Hyun Bin and Son Yejin admitted to being a couple on 1 January 2021.

One might say “Crash Landing On You” has generic plot - two people from vastly different worlds meeting through a crazy accident and developing feelings as a result, the choice of using North and South Korea as the two worlds provided unique social commentary and the opportunity for lots of interesting shenanigans. This is not the first series to feature a romance between a North and South Korean lead (see 2012’s “The King 2 Hearts”, which was also stellar), but it is definitely a more light-hearted take which is fun to watch. Additionally, the series is filled with fleshed out and lovable side characters.

While North Korean refugees interviewed by media outlets point out that the typical North Korean captain would not have the looks of Hyun Bin, most of them agree that the production team did their research as the everyday life of typical North Koreans were recreated quite accurately - from the types of furniture and household appliances they use, to the type of K-Dramas they watch in secret.

If you enjoy a good Rom-Com and an interesting premise, this is the K-Drama for you!

Extracurricular (Netflix)

Being a Netflix only series with no counterpart on Korean television, “Extracurricular” was able to explore the dark side of South Korean youth life which is not discussed on traditional South Korean media platforms. We are thrown into the life of a nerdy high school student played by Kim Dong Hee, who is actually effectively abandoned by his family and making ends meet secretly as an illegal prostitution ring mastermind.

The story unravels as the star student played by So Minhee discovers the schemes of Kim Dong Hee’s character and begins to blackmail him. Not to give too many spoilers, but it will prove difficult to balance his double life and the whole journey is captured superbly by the main cast’s stellar acting.

If you are a fan of dark and realistic teen dramas, this is the series for you!

Hospital Playlist (tvN/Netflix)

The team behind the “Reply” series and “Prison Playbook” returns with a few familiar faces so we all knew when the trailers dropped that we were in for a treat. As expected, the fabulous acting of the main cast, the wonderful storylines and also medically accurate procedures (according to my doctor friends), combined to make “Hospital Playlist” one of the most endearing dramas of the year.

Set in the fictional Yulje Medical Centre, we follow the lives of 5 doctors who met in college and their respective medical teams. Jo Jung-suk acts as a prankster and fun dad who is also a genius doctor. Yoo Yeon-seok plays a pediatric surgeon who is dead set on becoming a priest. Jung Kyung-ho acts as a cardiologist who seems cold-hearted (pun intended), but of course isn’t really. Kim Dae-myung plays a gynaecologist who is a mummy’s boy and has family drama galore. And finally Jeon Mi-do completes the set as a neurosurgeon who is lowkey the only adult in the friend group and who everyone wants to be when they grow up.

The drama throws us into the day to day runnings in the hospital without too much introductions and it actually made the characters all the more real because it was like we were just casually witnessing their everyday lives. The realisms of the show is furthered by the fact that even side characters like nurses and medical students have meaningful storylines of their own. We honestly cannot wait for Season 2 to air in May 2021!

Itaewon Class (JTBC/Netflix)

A remake of a popular Webtoon, “Itaewon Class” is a feel-good David and Goliath story where the male lead played by Park Seojun goes on a journey to avenge his father and chooses to do so without bending his morals at any point in time and making many friends along the way.

This series stood out by providing very diverse lead characters including a sociopath, a former convict, a trans woman, an illegitimate son and a Blasian trying to find acceptance in South Korea. All their stories highlight the different social issues and the stigmas many face navigating through life and is touching and relatable in many ways.

If you love a show with a positive social message, this is the show for you!

Sweet Home (Netflix)

Another webtoon remake by Netflix, “Sweet Home” follows a group of survivors in an apartment complex after all hell breaks loose in South Korea, as people begin to transform into monsters based on their greatest fears and regrets.

Every character has interesting backstories that are slowly revealed as they try to survive together, while battling monsters that are generated by the team behind many Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbusters. The main cast led by Song Kang, Lee Jin Wook, Lee Siyoung and Lee Dohyun also acted extremely well, with Lee Siyoung grabbing a lot of attention with her ripped superhero physique. Kim Namhee also had a breakout performance as the survivor who favours a Korean sword and hopefully would continue to get more roles following years playing minor characters.

If you enjoy apocalypse thrillers that explore human nature, you would love “Sweet Home”!

The Uncanny Counter (OCN/Netflix)

Okay, Netflix is really funding all the webtoon adaptions because “The Uncanny Counter” is yet another one. Currently the highest rated OCN drama in the cable channel’s history, this webtoon adaption follows a disabled orphaned teenage boy who gains superpowers and joins a demon-banishing team of other super-powered beings (who own a noodle shop on the side) called the Counters, while the mystery of his parents’ death plays a key role in the story.

This somewhat cliché set-up is done in a fun and enjoyable way and it is great to see the talented Jo Byung Gyu finally cast as a male lead! Kim Sejeong has also further improved in her acting and is a loveable badass in this series.

If you love a ghost/spirit busting mystery and just the superhero genre in general, you would enjoy “The Uncanny Counter”!

VIP (SBS)

“VIP” is a drama following a luxury brand’s VIP service team. While it has office drama, intrigue and power plays in almost every episode, it is arguably more of a drama about womanhood than anything else. With 4 female leads, 3 of whom are in their late 30s, the series accurately depicts the concerns women face reaching that age, whether they are married or unmarried, with children or not.

Jang Nara plays a successful business woman and a co-worker to her husband played by Lee Sang Yoon. Born in a privileged background with a seemingly loving husband, all seems well until she has suspicions of her husband having an affair. This drives her to investigate and through her findings, she instead uncovers more stories of her other female co-workers, like the rumour-tainted but very cool section chief played by Lee Chungah and the stressed and depressed mother of two played by Kwak Sunyoung.

If you want a spicy office drama that also has meaningful discussions about working women in South Korea, VIP is the best drama for that!

The World of the Married (JTBC)

Overtaking JTBC’s “Sky Castle” to be highest rated cable TV K-Drama of all time, this 2020 production also by JTBC is a remake of BBC series “Doctor Foster” but highly localised to fit the Korean narrative.

Kim Hee-ae plays a successful doctor with a film director husband and a teenage son. Her life seems picture perfect until she discovers her husband’s infidelity. But unlike in “VIP”, where the female lead actually bonds with other women along the way, Kim Hee-ae’s character would quickly learn that she was in fact betrayed by everyone around her - they all knew her husband was cheating and have been pretty supportive of this whole affair.

While highly dramatised, the suspicions of the husband’s infidelity, the discovery, the subsequent divorce and schemes for revenge are all done tastefully and is a reason why it struck a chord with the general public, especially married women watching the show.

If you love mess and chaos and seeing douchebags destroyed, “World of the Married” is the perfect drama for you!

18 Again (JTBC)

JTBC really has a knack for remakes. This remake of the movie “17 Again” starring Zac Efron is also adapted seamlessly to fit Korean culture and social issues e.g. teen pregnancy, divorce, women’s careers after being a parent and parent-child relations.

Kim Haneul and Yoon Sanghyun truly acted out the energy of a long-married couple and Lee Dohyun did extremely well in encapsulating Yoon Sanghyun’s mannerism as his de-aged counterpart. This boy is truly on a roll this year (he is also in “Sweet Home”). Also, the younger cast of this show were also very likeable and well flesh-outed and by the end of the series you are rooting for all of them to do well.

If you love a slice of life drama with a little fantastical element, you would love “18 Again”!

365: Repeat the Year (MBC)

Based on the Japanese novel “Repeat” by Kurumi Inui, “365 Days: Repeat the Year” follows this social experiment where 10 individuals are given the opportunity to travel 1 year back in time. As all 10 individuals try to remedy their mistakes and become better people, the experiment takes a sinister turn as the time-travellers begin to die one after another.

The veteran detective played by Lee Joohyuk and the mystery webtoon artist played by Nam Jihyun team up together with other time travellers to uncover the secrets behind travelling back in time and learn about the past lives of everyone chosen for the project.

If you enjoy a well-thought out time-travelling series that involves some alternate reality battle royale shenanigans, this is the series for you!

Kingdom (Season 2) (Netflix): The ancient zombie drama is back and still as strong as ever - one of the best zombie series on air right now.

Start-Up (tvN/Netflix): Loveable rom-com set in the start-up world in South Korea with one of the most hotly debated love triangles in this year’s K-Drama world.

Hi Bye, Mama! (tvN/Netflix): When a woman reincarnates to meet her husband and child again 5 years after her tragic death, only to find he has since remarried.

Random Long Post About Charon!

This is random, but I feel like fans often don’t take into consideration what Professor Rowan says during the Rotom event. I think his words actually make it very clear that Charon was the kid who wrote the diary and shines some light on Charon’s motivation for acting like a jerk to Rotom. I’ll explain why I believe this: “Ah, imagine finding you here! You must be eager to fill your Pokédex to be searching even here. What am I doing? I visit a professor I know in Eterna every so often. He tells me intriguing rumors of rare Pokémon sightings and such.” This part isn’t particularly relevant (though I do sort of wonder if the Professor Rowan visits is actually Charon himself), but this next part definitely is: “A Pokémon that slips into electric appliances, you say… Hmm… That is somewhat off from what I’ve heard about it. Hmm… This is what I’ve heard. Long ago, there was a Pokémon that merged with a toy robot. Should that Pokémon be recognized as a new species or not… Debates over the issue were about to start when they were rendered moot. The very topic of discussion–the Pokémon-infused robot–disappeared…” Okay, so the first thing that is really important to note here is that Rowan doesn’t have the exact same information as the player. This means Charon has done research that he was keeping to himself, and fits in with Charon writing that he wants his Rotom research to be a “secret.” But we also learn here that other scientists were at least introduced to Rotom somehow despite this. Now, as for the “topic of discussion… disappeared” part–because Charon’s lab is secret, these words don’t refer to Rotom leaving the lab. Instead, they must refer to Charon putting it in that lab to keep it a secret. This might seem odd at first–why would Rotom have been introduced to scientists in the first place at all then…? But I actually think this all makes sense. Here’s a stripped-down version of the backstory based on all these details: –Charon obtains information about Rotom “by pure chance,” as he writes in the journal we know for a fact is his. –Other researchers somehow knew about it and were going to start debates about it. –Rotom is locked away in the lab by Charon so that he would get all the credit for describing it. –Rotom eventually leaves the lab. This still haves a lot to be desired. Is Charon the same person who found Rotom as a child? It seems that way, since the speech patterns and diction are the same. But then how and why did other researchers learn about Rotom in the first place? Why did Charon want all the credit only after this happened? Here is where analyzing Charon’s character makes everything clear. Obviously, Charon is a greedy person. Specifically, he seems to be someone who is pragmatic to the point of being a cynical jerk. He desires money for himself and his team, but we know from his dialogue that it’s because he thinks people can’t achieve anything without it. We can also see that Charon has a high opinion of himself (he says so), but it also seems like he may have a low opinion of himself at the same time. The fact that he keeps trying to assert his self-worth, brag, and explain that he has a place in Team Galactic every time he speaks in-game hints at this. Also, Charon’s own co-workers hate him. Considering his plan at the end of the game, we know that if Charon were presented with a way to make himself known to all, he would do everything he could to make that happen. He also at one point says “I like seeing children try their best,” which sounds a bit weird out-of-context, but makes perfect sense if the Rotom kid’s childhood was his. Putting together all of the information I’ve discussed, here is my interpretation, applying Occam’s Razor the whole way through, of the story behind the Rotom event: –Charon came across information about Rotom “by pure chance.” How? When it came out of a lawnmower in his childhood. –At some point, Charon was excited to tell everyone about Rotom. They were probably still close friends at this point. –Other researchers were going to start debates on Rotom after Charon gave them some information about it. –Because of Charon’s greed, desire to belong, and selfishness, he became possessive and wanted to get “all the credit.” He freaked out and locked Rotom away in his secret lab. –Everyone was confused because it had disappeared, and debates couldn’t continue. –Rotom was upset and tired of being stuck in the lab and left. I’m almost certain this is the story the writers intended.

REALLY LONG THOUGHTS BELOW THE CUT:

This is a really well reasoned theory!! I dunno if we’ll ever really be able to know what story the writers intended until we actually get this plotline expanded in a remake HINT HINT NINTENDO But it does definately seem to me that Charon = kid who had that cute backstory in that journal literally in Charon’s lab written like Charon talks and nobody else does. That seems very much like the simplest option to me, and it makes this character so much more well-developed, yet its kinda not a popuar theory.. alas... I don’t completely follow this exact sequence of events in my headcanons but I do think it fits perfectly with everything we know so far. You’re so good at analysis!!

Personally I think maybe people forget about Rowan’s few sentences at the start of the event... just cos the event is really hard to find. Practically nobody actually played this thing, I certainly never got a chance to do it until a decade later when i was able to emulate + use gamesharks. So before that I got my information secondhand through script-dumps and lets play videos, and a lot of people seem to leave out the rowan bit. A lot of people actually leave out the diary too! It seems even people who actually played the event didnt realise it was there, just grabbed their new rotom form and left. Alas poor Charon, ignored even in a meta sense! Also on Bulbapedia the script-dumps are organized weird. The actual page for the event and the Rotom Room as an area don’t contain it, its just got the diary part and the rowan part cut off separate and put on charon and rowan’s pages respectively.

Anyway, my personal thoughts + alternate interpretation to add to this!

To me it didnt sound like someone else discovered a rotom and tried to start these debates, then Charon freaked out at the competition and became paranoid. To me it sounded like Rowan was talking about someone (Charon) who started a debate and then suddenly vanished on the day it was going to take place. i dunno, just the way it was phrased seemed to come off like this was some relative unknown who popped up with this information about rotom, and then everyone assembled to hear him out. Cos specifically the ONLY information Rowan knows is that its ‘a pokemon that can possess a toy robot’, you’d think if multiple scientists were debating the existence of rotom for a long time then they’d have more info than that, info that isnt super specific to Charon’s situation. Or, at least, you’d think that if they were still researching rotom AFTER this one failed conference, they would have gained more info by now? I dunno, its hard to explain what I mean.

So, the basis for all my deductions is this interpretation that Charon (at least for that moment) had decided his rotom research was finished and wanted to reveal it. For me, the big question is... why didnt he?

WHY would Charon not want to boast about his discovery in this ‘debate about rotom’? We know at least one famous pokemon professor was gonna be there! Charon’s whole thing is (supposedly) wanting to become famous cos of rotom, absolutely no attatchment to it except as a revenue source, yep totally, no lies here. So you’d think that joining in a big debate with a bunch of high ranking scientists and making his great reveal would be.. like.. exactly what he wanted?? Why did it not happen??

My interpretation of this is kind of a mushy one linked to my general irrational decision that this man is potentially redeemable and totally has a soul. Alas, why can I never leave the grampademption train! I think that maybe this was some sort of major moment where the good and bad sides of his character clashed. REALLY CLASHED. He’s spent so many years trying to lock off himself into two mutually conflicting boxes, the innocent kid who sees this pokemon as a friend and the bitter cynical old bastard who wants to become famous off it. And now he has to choose, and it led to a complete mental breakdown! He initially chose money over rotom, he was gonna go ahead with the presentation. But then his better side won out and he cancelled it at the last second. He got cold feet, being scared of losing his best friend. Maybe he was actually going so far as to do some sort of morally repugnant deal, he was gonna sell rotom off to the highest bidder and never see it again? Or it’d have to be dissected as the first specemin of a new species, or locked up forever and experimented upon? Or maybe its just simply.. when you only have one friend in the world you kinda wonder if they’d want to keep you around if they found another friend. Maybe he thought rotom only needed him because of his research, maybe he thought it would become just as greedy as him if it got the chance? Maybe he thought that it would leave him if he let anyone else know it existed, which is what led to his growing paranoia and decision that his research was perpetually ‘not done yet’. (Cos seriously, what you see of his lab and stuff seems pretty finished???)

So that’s my interpretation of why he and rotom ‘vanished’ at that point, but then there’s the question of how they ended up separated. this is now going into complete fanfic territory, I dont really have evidence for any of it. In my image of how this whole scene would go down, mid-freakout Charon would have snapped at rotom and it led to an argument that ultimately resulted in like... triple decker bonus back of Regrettable Decisions. Charon’s been shown to kinda dig himself further into his own grave whenever his plans go wrong. So here we go, scene is set with Charon suddenly grabbing everything and running the fuck out the fire exit, five seconds before the meeting is about to start. From rotom’s perspective, it has NO IDEA what is going on, it just listens when he says to get in the pokeball. And now we have Charon in the position of having NO CLUE how to explain this all when he opens that pokeball again, he’d never just be honest about his feelings. Hell, he’s such an emotionally stunted guy wrapped up in his own neuroses, i don’t know if he’d even be honest about his feelings to HIMSELF! He just sitting here having a panic attack like ‘why did i do that?? I was about to become rich??’ Giant neon sign flies overhead saying ‘YOU HAVE EMOTIONS’, he ignores it. I figure he’d also exaggerate it in his head and destroy his entire scientific career just because he thinks he’s embarassed himself too much to go back. And he’s decided that this somehow proves that being a good person will only ruin all your dreams, and you have to be as bitter as possible to succeed. this is where he went from a dubious guy who occasionally breaks the law to ‘well I’d better jump off the slippery slope forever and join a space based evil team, literally just because of One Social Anxiety Moment’. (Relateable, amirite?) And ironically everyone he met that day is literally just thinking ‘oh god what happened to that guy, is he okay?’ and would have totally understood if he just explained his damn self... So all his panic comes to a head and he decides to blame rotom rather than actually do some in-depth analysis of his own life choices. I feel bad because I don’t want to hurt my friend?? I personally value friends higher than money? No, nonsense, you’ve somehow CORRUPTED ME! How could you do this, don’t you know how important that meeting was? WAS THIS YOUR PLAN ALL ALONG??? It was my ONE CHANCE! (apparantly, according to me)

So even though he just ran away because he didn’t want to lose rotom.... he throws away rotom. (just imagine the internal screaming this man must have experienced for the next twenty years)

It was a stupid, STUPID decision based on misdirected anger that he should have been aiming at himself. Nope, can’t believe that the great charon might have made a mistake, that friendship might indeed be a thing that exists in your dried up old heart. Instead it has just proven that friendship = weakness! And now because of this you’ve turned a salvageable situation into the worst disaster possible, yet again. (Man, I feel like Charon can barely survive without rotom. Its not just his conscience but a large chunk of his common sense...)

And rotom of course has NO IDEA why its suddenly been abandoned, so it probably was a really depressing time sitting alone in its trainer’s old house, hoping he’ll eventually come back so you can apologise for something that you don’t even know what it is... And at the same time we have Charon freaking the fuck out for decades, too caught up in his own neuroses to make the very simple decision of just turning around and walking back to where he left that pokeball. And even if he got there, what would he even say? Would he actually have the balls to admit he was wrong, or would he make excuses? ‘Oh, I was just too busy to visit, so much work to do, don’t make a mountain out of a molehill’ In his darkest moments he even considers that maybe he’s wrong to regret this decision at all. ‘But I did the right thing, I don’t need rotom, I don’t need anyone, I have to sacrifice everything to be famous...’ He’s probably even managed to get all the way to the door of the old chateau before running away yet again, leaving rotom thinking it just imagined seeing him outside the window :( Its like in his past when he startled rotom and it thought it had hurt him, but this is if he didn’t chase after it and just left time frozen on that moment. Well, he wishes it was, that he could just choose any second to take back his decision and everything would go back to normal. Never that easy, though...

I APOLOGISE FOR OVERLY LONG POORLY EXPLAINED FANFIC THOUGHTS WHILE I AM SLEEP DEPRIVED ok i need to go cry over dumb grandpas and then probably get some damn rest

oh wait one last random headcanon! i think that charon’s secret lab in team galactic eterna building is actually something he only built after the big moment of abandoning his pokemon Why does Charon have a rotom lab here if he doesnt have a rotom anymore? sure it could just mean he lost his rotom relatively recently, but since my fanfic idea places it earlier in the timeline I like to think that maybe he’s made this room in case he ever gets rotom back. He made a bunch of form-machines even better than the old ones, and decorated the place all fancy, and hopes that maybe it could be at least a small apology for all the suffering he’s put his friend through. Though he doesnt understand that rotom isnt as superficial as he is, so he cant just buy back its love... He just sits in there are rereads his journal whenever he gets nostalgic, he hasnt actually done any science in there for years. Also, it would maybe explain the duplicate rotom lab in silph co in HGSS? that’s the original, and he’s tried to make his new galactic lab as similar as possible because of how guilty he feels, and how he wants to just escape that guilt by turning back time instead of actually saying sorry.

A big thing I always struggle with in writing redemptiony fics is whether I’m lessening a character’s evil and forgiving them too easily and all. I think this series of events would definately still qualify as A Total Dick Move, even if its one that actually has a reason to it other than just ‘i’m evil’, and hurt himself as much as he hurt rotom. And man its so frustrating, seriously I’m here like ‘DUDE STOP IGNORING YOUR EPIPHANIES, JUST GO APOLOGIZE’ yet I also know that if I make him do it immediately and have everything resolved without conflict it’ll be so much less of a believeable redemption arc :P so yeah believe me i still wanna slap charon just as much as everyone who hates charon does, just for different reasons XD Also he needs a hug too. But he needs to do a lot of development before he could actually earn it!

Shitlist Reviews - Trailer Analysis - Jan-Mar 2019

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen, I’m Amateur Fan 2.27 and welcome to the Shitlist, where bad movies eventually burn. It’s been a good while since I posted something up on the site since the Halloween reviews so I thought it was time to do another trailer analysis review based on the upcoming movies which will pan out during this year.

This will be the first one of three trailer reviews through-out this year starting off in the spring; then the summer and finally the fall, winter will be excluded for the personal reasons. I will go through not 1 but 6 individual trailers that have been released and will give my views and theories upon the movie following on either what I’ve heard about the films in general or in my opinion on what I think of the trailer but not of the film, despite revealing spoilers (although saying that, most of you will possibly see the spoilers I will be stating soon).

Some will follow on adaptations of notable works or reboots for example which will be interesting as well as re-edited reviews such as looking at other trailers of a movie that I previously looked at in the past. Keep in mind that this is only opinion based with theories summed by me only rather than ideas that were passed on by others.

The first would be the notable remake of an 1980s movie which coincidentally still haunts me to this day on how dark it was at the time, Pet Sematary... based on the Stephen King novel following a Parent’s worst nightmare come to life, I was sceptical at first when I saw the trailer, especially the casting as John Lithgow towards Fred Gwynne’s performance as Judd.

Though after re-reading the book several times leading towards the second trailer which had a major spoiler on the first child (Ellie) in the movie getting killed off rather than the baby (Gage) in the book, it worked as it displayed innocence as Gage was indeed a baby rather than Ellie who in this case was a pre-teen.

Another thing that got my interest in this is how interesting it was the fact that they made the being behind the supernatural more maleficent and mysterious rather than in the original adaptation when it was only there for shock value with its history not being fully explored. I find this however kind of weird as well as it looks closer towards an occult movie with ritual sacrifices rather than being a standard supernatural threat following the other characters seen in the second trailer.

It looks promising enough though the second trailer may have leaked a bit too much on the actual film itself displaying way too much rather than holding back the mystery that held the book and the original so close. I admire the view of the Sematary which looks more supernatural based on Native American lore rather than something closer to a H.P. Lovecraft novel.

Though seeing it remade is going to be interesting to look at it in 2 separate perspectives on how close it was to the source material as well as seeing it as a standard remake to a superior version.... as long as they don’t go full female Ghostbusters on us, then its fine. The second trailer I would like to discuss is something that caught my eye after the hype from Infinity War which would be the new Spiderman film Far From Home which features the appearance on one of my favourite villains in Marvel history, Mysterio played by Jake Gyllenhaal.

After viewing the trailers for a good few moments, it took me a while to think of an actual opinion aside from glee and joy on seeing the web-head back into action, but questions were raised on the time-zone towards the movie as well as Infinity War. I would like to see something else made towards the movie such as how His transformation from teenage superhero into following the responsibilities that Stark warned him about in Homecoming.

Personally I’m not entirely interested in seeing this movie for the particular reason is that I’m not a Marvel fan, especially with the fact that I don’t see Tom Holland as Spider-man nor as Peter Parker, though I enjoy watching the others like the Avengers or the independent superheroes like Iron Man or Thor but Spiderman however is something I grew up watching especially growing up with it during the 90s.

My theory before the trailer would be that Mysterio was a former agent working for S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who was betrayed by Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. following a mission on the field leading him to go astray leading him to own an individual identity to act like a hero to get Fury’s attention leading him to stage major crimes through-out Europe with the advantage to beaten Spider-man to both spite and weaken Fury.

Though this may be falsified when the movie is released or if any other trailers will be coming out later this year prior to the movie’s premiere but keep in mind that this is only a theory of mine and seeing that the entire MCU series is nearly based on betrayal and distrust, I think this might happen but as I said, it’s only a theory.

Another Trailer is the remake or should I say reboot of the another classic 1980’s horror movie relating to the supernatural or in this case the Arcane side of things when it comes towards Magic, Child’s Play, now there was a lot of controversy over this movie following several parents believing that the doll could actually exist.

There is even a bigger problem as well as the current franchise is taken over to TV following the recent movie that was on Netflix not too long ago known as Cult of Chucky which featured main star of the killer doll Chucky and notable Horror movie Actor, Brad Dourif alongside his real-life daughter Fiona Dourif.

For those who don’t know, the original series follows a mass-murderer known as the Lakeshore Strangler Charles Lee Ray ending his pursuit of madness in the hands of a toy-store by being mortally wounded by a cop leading him to transfer his soul into a doll known as a Good Guy toy, a parody of Cabbage Patch Kids at the time.

After his soul transferred to the doll, he continued his murderous pursuit whilst attempting to transfer his soul back into another person before his doll body becomes human which is a curse to his voodoo practice. The original’s concept was new at the time which was interesting but raised a bunch of parody movies relating to the same premise such as Soul possession movies like the Conjuring or more in particular the Insidious movies.

The remake follows it in a different perspective following it in a more technical pursuit such as the Terminator series such as a company how manufactures home entertainment appliances with the addition of a new feature in the form of a doll which may be a bit too adapted when it comes to the owner.

I’ve seen the trailer several times now as well as the website and it peaks my interest greatly especially that they are following a different aspect towards the original material, such as making it but on a rogue A.I. rather than a voodoo possessed toy; some of the behind the scenes footage looks incredible to say the least as well as the use of technology is a new adjustment to a franchise such as this.

I’m intrigued by this decision as it would open new possibilities to see the use of technology expanding the way it is including in modern world as well such as WI-FI and Amazon’s Alexa. The next sequel is again like last time, Godzilla: King of the Monsters... I talked about this a while ago but I never really explored the discussion over the monsters independently, mainly because they were still under heavy work in Legendary Pictures, but seeing them more and more closely is making it believe that the sequel is going the right direction, possibly surpassing over monster movies that flopped in the past (see Pacific Rim: Uprising).

What I appreciate is how the monster’s look more closer to actual animals including Mothra and Rodan (I’ll get to Ghidorah momentarily) Mothra looks more of an insect rather than her original counterpart which resembles more of a ball of fluff rather than an actual animal (but seeing how she was made in the 50’s I let it slide) she looks beautiful in a more graphically dangerous sort of way and with the appearance of Rodan as well looks more menacing aside from the fact he is Godzilla’s arch rival at first glance though the same can’t be said for how both of them are described.

Ghidorah however looks more threatening than I’ve ever seen him especially with the way he moves to the way his appearance is more mysterious. The look of Ghidorah reminds me more too how he first appeared including his powerful figure looks more curious than it does boastful.

Godzilla on the other hand looks closer to the original material from his frame down to the dormant spikes on his back which resembles the 1050’s edition which made him more of a protector of Earth rather than the original message that he was meant to become which was a memorial of nuclear destruction.

I’ve seen several trailers which looks promising enough despite the human interaction with the creatures (or Titans in the movie’s presence)which from the sounds of it makes the monsters more like gods which is distracting to the last movie, especially that Godzilla literally saved the world from the monsters that again was caused by nuclear radiation.

I am interested and (as a Godzilla fan) intrigued to see how this movie changes the timeline especially seeing how the world would see Godzilla either as a weapon or as a monster created by their own stupidity towards Nuclear Warfare,

Hellboy is the next one (yup another Comic book Trailer) but this one is surprisingly more closer to the material than Del Toro’s versions (including the animated movie which technically counts as canon to his series) with the appearance of a meaner tougher and more dark-hearted Demon Hunting badass known as Hellboy.

Seeing the trailer a few months ago, I thought that it was going to flop badly but seeing that it’s followed some of the stories closely from The Wild Hunt (Omnibus Vol 3 if any of you are interested in reading Mike Mignola’s works); The trailer looks very promising towards the original material as it was more darker, gothic and more based on Lovecraft’s work (mainly on the Seed of Destruction arc) it was the basic Horror graphic novel when it was released with the addition of the BPRD (Bureau of Paranormal and Research Department) series following shortly after.

Hellboy is changed in this one to look more demonic which is something I highly respect as it was darker in the graphic novels and brutally graphic when it came to the occult. The original material was more based several fairy tales as well but shown towards religious aspects, mainly towards Christianity and folklore of independent countries which made the graphic novels more serious when it came to tales.

Hellboy is directed by Neil Marshall who has directed a few of my favourite movies such as the Descent, Dog Soldiers, Centurion and several shows like Game of Thrones, Westworld (Which I’ve yet to see) and Constantine (premiere episode) so you know a series like Hellboy is in good hands especially in his taste of Horror as well.

David Harbour (Stranger Things) stars as the main lead of Hellboy with Ian McShane and Milla Jovovich to co-star alongside the main villain and Trevor Bruttenholm which is an interesting choice with English actors being featured towards the movie as cameos such as Mo from Eastenders who stars from both trailers.

As you can see I too am looking forward to seeing this, mainly towards the dark nature of the trailers as well as to see if this adaptation can surpass the Del Toro adaptations as well as to see if Harbour can possibly be better than Ron Perlman (no offence Ron, you’ll always be awesome in my eyes regardless).

Though this is something I never actually expected to see until it was confirmed through an interview by Aykroyd as well as Jason Reitman (son of Ivan) being the writer and the director so hopefully when later this year the full trailer will be displayed. This had my excitement thrown around as a huge fan of the original series it will bring back a lot of references to the characters and possibly bring back the Ghostbusters everyone knows and loves but as I said, this is only a hopeful situation especially for a teaser.
