In no particular order:

#1. Word of Honor: I was finally pushed to watch this show after seeing screenshots and fantastic fan art pop up on my twitter for weeks and I was not disappointed. Is the plot a bit of a clusterfuck? Yes. Are the characters fantastic? Yes. Does it push the hell out of the censorship boundaries? YEAH. Did it inspire me to read Qi Ye and Tian Ya Ke which have both become some of my favorite books? YES.

#2. Kinnporsche: Part of my reintroduction to BL and my introduction to Thai BL in general. Mad respect for Mile for seeking out Apo to play the love interest; that's dedication lol. I still haven't rewatched the show, despite how fantastic it is, because I don't think I'll be able to recapture the absolute DELIGHT I felt seeing it for the first time but I'll revisit it soon.

#3. Kingdom: Y'all know how much I love good Korean horror and Kingdom DELIVERED. It's fast-paced, it's fun, it's dramatic. The twists aren't necessarily groundbreaking but the execution of them is solid. The emotional stakes are very much there; I was glued to my screen from start to finish. (Netflix please give me season 3, please I'm begging).

#4. The Rise of Phoenixes: I won't scream about this show because I could go on forever. I didn't think I was one for long political dramas until I watched this and it rewired my brain. Ni Ni and Chen Kun are phenomenal and the behind the scenes footage really showcases how much hardwork they put in to embody Feng Zhiwei and Ning Yi. (Also THE CHEMISTRY). Every crew member also put in 110%, the attention to historical detail and the level of craftsmanship that went into this show blows my mind. THEY USED MINIATURES!!! I feel like you hardly see that anymore! Just check out my quick review for more plot stuff and also the BTS videos on Youtube! Not all of them are subtitled but still well-worth checking out.

#5. Skinamarink: So glad I managed to catch this at a local theater. Unsettling, fairly unique in its execution, and it stuck with me for days after. If you're not into a slow build or found footage style horror, you won't enjoy this but it's definitely one of my favorite movies of 2023.

#6. OldBoy: The local theater came in clutch again by showing the remastered version of Oldboy, which I hadn't seen yet and didn't know anything about despite it being one of my boyfriend's favorite films lol, and I LOVE THIS MOVIE. It features one of my all-time favorite villains to date and it left me totally gutted at the end. If you haven't seen it yet, GO IN BLIND. It's well worth it, trust me.

#7. Playboyy - the series isn't finished yet but I feel confident sticking it on this list because, so far, it's blown my expectations out of the water. I've spoken about how much I enjoy the nuanced take on sex work, sexuality, and relationships but I don't think I've raved enough about how visually appealing the show it to watch! I'm a sucker for surrealistic imagery and atmosphere and Playboyy really does hit the sweet spot between real and dreamlike.

#8. Spider-Man: Across The Spiderverse - THIS MOVIE. The animation was fantastic, the story, the characters. NOT TO MENTION THE SOUNDTRACK! This was a great film to watch in theaters. You can really tell how much love and attention went into every detail.

#9. Double Mints - Shoutout to the person on tumblr who made a screenshot compilation of this movie! It compelled me to seek it out. I wouldn't say it's a good film but I love a toxic, codependent relationship and this movie does that well. The concept is cool and I do love a character covered in blood, weeping which this movie also delivers in abundance. I rewatched it a few days ago for a gifset and I will no doubt watch it again soon lol

20 questions for fic writers!

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

7 right now. I think I had three or four up on my first account, but that one was randomly deleted by the site in like 2019? Or something? I never could get it back, and I never republished the fics, because I kind of lost motivation for writing for a while because of that, and now that I'm back in the game, it's been so long since I wrote that stuff that I either don't really like what I wrote then, or figure that I'd rather rewrite the one fic that I do still like. Oh, god. I just remembered that there was ONE fic that I actually orphaned back then, which means that it's still up. Oooh Christ... I'm not going to name drop it, because I orphaned it for a reason - the reason being that it's the crackiest crac!fic imaginable, born out of sleep deprivation and giggly group chats... I'm looking at it now, and it's apparently 10 years old. Oh. Oh no. I reread it. Oh, god. This was the first "attempt" at smut I ever wrote, and it was between a woman and a sentient inanimate edible object. 8d10 psychic damage, do not recommend.

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?

At the moment: 296.290 words When I'm finished updating This Dream Is Over (Another Has Begun) it will be around 350.000 words, and I just hit 105k on the Regency fic I'm working on, so by the end of the year we might be close to 500k... written in one year...

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Just Sandman, currently. On my last account I wrote for Merlin, ACD Sherlock Holmes (a school project, believe it or not), and a LotR/HP crossover (yeah, I don't really feel like re-publishing and finishing that in 2023, for obvious reasons). I might go back to writing for Merlin again, some day. I sort of want to rewrite that one fic I did post, because I quite liked the premise...but I feel like I would need to rewatch the entire series before I did that, and who's got the time?

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I try to reply to almost every comment, because I want the commenter to know how much I appreciate that they took the time to comment. I crave that validation, perhaps a little too much, but that's robably common with authors... When I'm updating a fic one chapter at a time, I usually manage to reply to all of them, even if it's just with a couple of heart emojis (if I couldn't think of anything else), but once the whole fic is up and I get one reader who is leaving a bunch of comments in rapid succession, I sometimes skip the one's that are just emojis or exclamation marks and focus on the ones I have real replies to - not because I don't appreciate the emojis just as much, but because I worry that I'd be spamming the reader with like five identical heart-emoji replies :P

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Hm, I tend to end things rather happily, but I suppose Stay, Just this Once could be read a bit angsty, since it ends with Hob in 1889 going "Dream kissed me and then left with an implication of potential future kisses? Oh boy, I can't wait until 1989!" when, you know, Dream won't show in 1989.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Probably This Dream Is Over. I mean, they're all pretty happy, but that one is just so hopeful and soft... You'll see what I mean when I post the last chapter ;)

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Not really. There was one reader who left a couple of comments with very much unasked-for advice (and fairly bad advice, at that) which made me feel a bit meh, but that's hardly hate. Then there was this one comment that went a bit like "Well, that was stupid," and to this day I have no idea if they meant the writing or the characters (who were, to be fair, being very stupid in that chapter). Tone can be very hard to read in text, so I'm trying to give them the benefit of doubt. But no, no real hate, thankfully.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yup. When I started writing again about a year ago, I decided to give it a try, not really thinking I could make it work, considering the last time I wrote romance I had trouble even describing a kiss (which was almost a decade earlier), but it actually worked (I hope)! Then I just couldn't seem to write something without smut. I tried to deliberately leave things off before the explicit parts in one or two stories (making them "just" mature) for people who aren't into the stuff, and I also try to make all the explicit content skippable for those who want to read the rest of the story. What kind of smut? Idk, I've written M/M and M/F so far, I'll probably write F/F at some point too. I think most of it has been fairly vanilla so far, with some light themes of BDSM maybe, if you squint.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

Only that LotR/HP one I mentioned earlier, which I abandonded when my account was deleted. I did start planning a Star Trek AU for Merlin, but I think I only wrote a chapter or so before my motivation died and I never published anything. I think I'm generally more interested in AUs taking place in other franchises than "real" crossover with actual characters from both universes.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not to my knowledge. Let's keep it that way!

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Not yet! I suppose I could do it myself, but as the only language I speak well enough to translate into is Swedish, and Swedes tend to read stuff in English anyway, I don't know that there would be much of a point.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

No, but I'd be open to trying! Could be either super fun or incredibly frustrating, but you never know until you try!

14. What’s your all time favorite ship?

I mean, I think it's a draw between Merthur and Dreamling. If I went back and started reading and writing fic for Merthur again, I'm sure I'd fall right back into it, even if Dreamling is my current obession.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Only the couple of WiPs I have from my first AO3 account, I think. I'm trying really hard this time around not to jump between projects too much, but finish what I have before I start something new. If I give myself free reins, my ADD is going to make sure nothing ever gets finished.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Dialogue, for sure, and characterisation - or at least I fervently hope that my readers would agree on that point.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Descriptions, definitely. What does anyone look like? I don't know, I couldn't decide, make it up yourself. I had to go back and make myself add a sentence about Hob's friend Dana being blonde in the last two chapters of This Dream Is Over, since she's an OC and my readers would have no idea at all what she looked like otherwise. It's a struggle, and I do try to practise, but it doesn't come as easy as dialogue and character.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

Fun! I've written a few scenes with some Middle English in them, and I have this vague idea of part of a scene where Hob and Dream are walking in London or something and Hob overhears a couple of Swedish tourists discuss how to get somewhere or something, and him turning to them and giving them directions in hilariously outdated Swedish, and Dream going, "When did you last visit Scandinavia?" And Hob says, "Um, 1745, I think. Why?" and Dream is like, "...Nothing." I just don't know how funny that would be to readers who don't speak Swedish... Might still use it some day.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Technically? The Redwall series. I was like 10 and we had to write a story in school, and I was obsessed with Redwall and wanted to write something with talking animals, and I couldn't come up with a better name for the place, so in the end I straight up copied the world and wrote more or less a self-insert who ended up there, entirely oblivious to the concept of fanfiction, but I suppose it counts anyway. I won a prize for it. I have no idea if the adults who judged it knew it was fanfic or not...

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

I think it's the Dreamling Regency AU I'm currently working on. If I manage to pull it off as well as I'm hoping to, I think it will be the best thing I've written so far. I'm even considering looking for beta readers for the first time, because I think it has potential and I want it to be the best it can be.

21. CHEEKY EXTRA QUESTION BECAUSE I FELT LIKE GIVING ADVICE - What's the best advice you have for other writers?

If you write longfic, NAME YOUR CHAPTERS! My first couple of fics just had numbered chapters, and whenever I had to go back to double check some detail, or rewrite some sentence I had to retcon, I had to be like "uuuh I think it might be chapter five??" and then waste a bunch of time checking. Now, I have chapter titles which are descriptive enough to remind me of exactly what the chapter is about, and it has made my life so much easier... Also, connected to this, actually using the chapter headers etc. in your word processor so that you get a list of chapters you can pull up to navigate.

in no particular order except for roughly release date/order in which i got obsessed with each album, i present you: the albums i've had on loop for most of 2023

i like to listen to albums from start to finish, i think for the same reason that i tend to rewatch the same movies when i can't sleep (the sense of familiarity) but i'm picking a favourite from each because all of them had that one (1) song i got obsessed with and/or made it into one of my very specific playlists... some even more than one, if i'm honest lol

my world, aespa (2023)

what can i say about my favourite gg except that i love them so much? their title tracks are always a 10/10 for me but so are most of the sides, and for my world we got some amazing track videos (my favourite was of course i'm unhappy). plus there's the added layer of collecting pcs and the friends i cry about pieces of cardboard with, and while i admit i went a bit overboard during my world and that may be one of the reasons i got overwhelmed and eventually bored so now i'm stepping back from collecting, i still had lots of fun and this was my soundtrack for most of it.

my sons and jungwoo, do i really need to say anything else... i was lowkey scared i wouldn't like the mini for some reason and yeah that wasn't a problem, i am still obsessed with perfume lol i think this came out right after i decided i wouldn't buy more physical albums except the ones that i really loved the design of, and then i loved the songs so much that i ended up getting doyoung's box... and eventually two pbs from ktwt because i wanted to make covers out of them, and then never did lol

pado and baggy jeans are my most played songs of the year; wish i could say i've gotten over the brain worms baggy jeans caused but nope, it's still on loop in my mind months later and i fear it's not going anywhere 👖

nil, the gazette (2006)

so this one is not new... but for some reason in the first half of the year, i think? i got back into the gazette; i've been listening to nil now and then throughout the years but now i also listen to their whole discography regularly. it's like being 16 again but with back pain lol happy to announce nil is still my favourite album of all time, and that i somehow remember all the lyrics! for this one i'm picking cassis because it has been one of my favourite songs since it came out and then cemented its place forever in my heart when i saw them play it live, which is something i'll never forget.

ICONIC MOVE, MY MOTION. i adore fact check, 127 never miss with their title tracks and i always go through at least a few days where i need to play them on loop because they won't leave my mind otherwise... but this time, if i could only pick one song from the album, it'd have to be angel eyes. i don't know if it's the happy 90s boyband energy or what but it's so special to me, makes me happy every time i listen to it <3

ร็อก เล็ก เล็ก, micro (1986)

we all know when and where this came from, don't we? one thing i'll always be grateful to only friends for (other than sandray both as characters and as a ship) is the music; i discovered so many wonderful songs and artists by listening to the playlists, and of course my favourite was micro, particularly this album which i started to listen to because both อย่าดีกว่า and อยากจะบอกใครสักคน are in it, and while they're still my favourites i really like the rest of the album too.

i think i discovered mitski back in 2018 when be the cowboy came out, but for some reason i never listened to her music a lot? i had a pearl in my playlists, but it wasn't until laurel hell came out in 2022 that i started to listen to more... and then this year we got this amazing album and she's now one of my most listened artists of all time. my favourite is my love all mine because, like for most of twitter, that was (one of) my sandray song(s).

something to give to each other, troye sivan (2023)

this album came out right when i was itching for new music and to make more playlists because i was bored of always listening to the same songs. it was kind of a break? not because it's super different from other things i listen to, i don't think, but idk it was exactly what i needed right when i needed it. there's something about can't go back, baby that has always made it stand out to me, but don't ask me what.

to. x, taeyeon (2023)

mother! taeyeon has been in my life continuously for the longest time; her voice is such a comfort, it doesn't matter if i stop listening to kpop for years (which i've done a couple times in my life because i am that dramatic) i don't think i could ever quit her. honestly the whole album is perfect, no notes, and we even got a live clip for all for nothing. best way to end the year!

QOTS Rewatch - 1x02 - Cuarenta Minutos

Well folks, my recap thoughts on this episode are looong. So I won’t say too much else except that I fucking love this episode. Easily in the top 5. I mean, what’s not to love about what became my OTP of all OTPs crashing full-force into each other for the first time (and literally, among other things, getting into a car crash together, lol).

I’ve written extensively about the dynamic this episode sets up between James and Teresa in a previous meta, so I won’t go back over all that again here, but go read that if you haven’t. Then you can come back for my other Random Thoughts as I rewatched this episode for the umpteenth time:

Teresa wakes up in the warehouse, disoriented and dirty. The first thing that happens to her? Tonto clocks her with the butt of his gun when she asks to speak to Camila. And according to Aveline, he’s the nicest one there?! What does that make James, does that mean he’s supposed to be meaner than that??!

I never really understood what the purpose of the “pros” was (i.e., the sex workers). It seems incongruous at least with what we eventually learn about James’s scruples. Not that Camila would’ve had issues with the sex trade necessarily, but it seems a little odd to me that James would’ve gotten in-step with a woman who was involved in kidnapping women to sell them for sex. Or am I missing something? Is this an actual thing and the show is just trying to present this world somewhat accurately at this point?

God I remember watching this episode for the first time and feeling increasingly like something sinister was about to happen with Aveline. So intense. Also... not exactly realistic that she’d just fall over dead in a split second from a coke overdose of that magnitude.

Little could I have fathomed that Tonto and Charger (who digs through Aveline’s guts before she’s probably even fully dead) would eventually become Teresa’s soldiers and that I’d feel fondly towards them.

Not unlike Pote I guess?

Teresa’s first escape attempt! Hon what did you think you would accomplish by running UP the stairs? This part kind of tears me up. She was so desperate and scared. But tough as a nail. And ends up in a crumpled heap on the cement 🤯

Still has that black nail polish. Not even chipped!

Six and a half minutes in… and HELLO JAMES!! That loose strand of hair, that black leather jacket over a black shirt, that necklace. Skinny and scruffy-faced. I’m also partial to skinny-faced James and round-faced Teresa of this season. Anyway, I knew HE was trouble as soon as we saw him, just like he knew Teresa was trouble.

Because the first thing he does is dig even deeper into Aveline’s guts to rescue the last packet of coke. Literally getting blood all over his hands.

Reminds me of the scene later (episode 1x08?) after the shootout with the Miami dealers and Teresa is washing the blood off her own hands at the same sink, and he says, “I know what you’re going through.”

And while James is washing that blood off his hands, he looks up and catches his first glimpse of Teresa, waiting restlessly for her punishment for trying to run. I’d never noticed that this was actually the first time he laid eyes on her until Annie pointed it out to me. But look at those intense eyes. It’s like some kind of sign from the universe, that as he’s trying not to feel troubled about digging through a dead woman’s guts, he notices this almost feral, untameable bundle of raw energy in front of him. And in true Jeresa fashion, she doesn’t notice him looking at her.

Brenda to Tony: “your father went six days without eating the first time he escaped from jail” hahaha how have I missed this line before? I wonder how many times Chino escaped from jail total 😂

Ok, no matter how many times I watch this episode I don’t understand the purpose of the scenes showing Camila at her goddaughter’s quinceanera. It feels like a waste of space? Does anything important happen here? We learn about Isabela and that she’s 14. That Camila used to be a dancer herself. That her business is growing. That she supposedly values family (or at least gives lip service to it). But I’m not sure we needed this scene to tell us these things?

Then we get James’s first acknowledgment of Teresa, via text to Camila that she tried to run.

“He’s the old chemist now” lol Camila gets some great one-liners.

I also just fucking love Camila and Teresa’s dynamic in this episode. Camila is a master manipulator. The scene where she calls Epifanio on speakerphone. She doesn’t even need to say anything to Teresa. Her leverage now is crystal clear, all just via the perfect performance of this phone call with Epifanio. You see Camila watching Teresa’s face and listening to Epifanio’s forced nonchalance and coming to understand that there’s way more to the story than either of them is revealing.

Teresa’s whole demeanor in this scene and the ensuing struggle with Camila’s men is so great, so well-acted. Really the whole episode. Again with that almost feral quality.

Notice that James is standing there during that whole struggle. He walks in right as she starts screaming “no no no” as she’s getting pinned down on the table. We don’t really get to see his face but it looks like he’s facing away, like he can’t watch the struggle.

Then his face as she says “I’ll deliver the drugs.” He turns towards her for the first time and looks down slightly. Looks slightly uncomfortable. I’m dying to know what’s running through his head as he watches this struggle (and of course she’s headed for the “pros” which, again, I’d love to know what’s going through his head as he processes that). I need like, a James interior monologue of this episode in fic form.

Then of course the famous last words, “I don’t care about her, I care about getting the drugs to Han.” LOL. We’ll see about that James. We’ll just see about that. He wasn’t even being totally honest, even at this point, what, less than an hour after seeing her for the first time? It was already a fib, I think to try to protect Teresa from harm, even if he wasn’t entirely aware he was fibbing. We know it’s a fib because in the car, he tells Teresa unequivocally that he’s “not having that again” (with respect to another girl dying).

And Camila makes it very clear it’s his responsibility to make it happen and if Teresa dies, it’s on him.

That passport photo, lol. Sporting the same shirt and same cut on her face as she appears at the airport security in. Must’ve been a pretty tuned-out TSA agent.

James’s face watching her deep-throat, I mean swallow, the coke packets. LOL. I mean there IS something sexual about it, right? Especially when she just stares across the table at him as she’s shoving one down her throat. You can’t convince me the parallel doesn’t cross James’s mind. I almost feel like he interprets it as a challenge? Like a challenge to not look away?

I appreciate how Teresa basically adopts silence as her number one survival strategy. Like don’t say anything unless absolutely necessary. Don’t reveal anything. Just look blank. Exhibit 17,374: when Camila asks her if the patron saint Malverde trinket gives her faith or comfort. Teresa: ::silent blank stare::

Then her first words to James: “you’re religious? That’s a laugh.”

The sunglasses coming offffffff. And the whole physical struggle. I DIE every time I watch that part. And I definitely died like four times in a row watching it for the first time.

“Well then I’m gonna die too, because I’m not gonna throw that shit up” AND HIS FACE. HIS EYES. He can’t control the “who the fuck is she and what the fuck is she doing” expression of baffled awe and concern that passes over his face at that point. Look, James is not going to win in the “who holds their cards closer to their chest” contest against Teresa, and it’s because his eyes are always a dead giveaway. They don’t mask a thing. That’s why he’s always gotta wear sunglasses 🕶

And the sunglasses go back on before he says “you’re gonna die.” Gotta make sure he’s got his mask on before he says that. As much to hide any possible emotions from himself as from her.

“She’s always so last minute” to the TSA agent. Comedic gold—acting within acting. And one of the few times in the ENTIRE SERIES we see James smile?? Meanwhile Teresa just looks like a traumatized porcupine.

I love the wrist grab trying to run into the bathroom. She grabs him first and then he pulls her to the right door.

God the tension in the storage closet scene. It’s so good. Her weak “I can’t” does me in. His look of panic as he grabs for the soap. And incredulity once she gets the last one up. It’s now been made abundantly clear to him that, if they weren’t before, now they’re definitely in it together.

I think this scene is the first time he says her name? “C’mon Teresa” [ta-ray-zuh]

THE ESCALATOR SHOT. Enough said. I’ll rb a gifset of that and say more lol.

Then the cab ride back. I reblogged a gifset of this here. Buuut I’ll rb another one too because there’s so much to say about it.

Camila meeting Teo. “Speaking of life, I like life.” Poor Teo. And his line to her, when she says she’s good at handling her husband: “it’s always the best swimmers who drown.” The two of them are good at speaking in metaphors. But this conversation is also some terrific foreshadowing! Both for Teo’s storyline and Camila’s (though hers took a few seasons to get there).

Teo SHOULD stay away from Camila. But he won’t because Camila always uses her sex appeal to get what she wants out of her men. Except James—she never goes there with him. Of course, James would never fall for it, or respect her for doing it to him. He respects her because of her strength and intelligence, not because of her sex appeal. It’s an interesting parallel to his burgeoning respect for Teresa for those same qualities.

Camila: “I’m just supposed to keep looking for this girl that means nothing to you, whom you need alive, preferably, and who needs to be made an example of?” Epifanio: “Thank you, I knew you’d see it my way.” Hahahaha. Season 1 was the best for Camila and Epifanio repartee. It started to drag a little in season 2 in my opinion.

James visits Camila in the warehouse. “You know this Mendoza girl. Keep an eye on her. I think she might be more useful than I thought.” And James does that nose wrinkle and twitch he always does when he’s feeling uneasy. And when she tells him to talk to her and get her to trust him, he starts smoking his second cigarette of the scene (nervous habit? lol) and doesn’t make eye contact with Camila. He does a thing with his tongue against his teeth as if he’s lost in thought and trying to mentally brace himself for something. Again, I need a James interior monologue of this episode!! But you can tell that he’s already compelled by Teresa at this point. Her nerves of steel, her composure, her wildness. And I feel like he already knows at this point that she’s going to change things. If not in a personal way, at least the dynamics of his workplace.
