#adipadpracticeideas The Rhythm Tree This is one I have dabbled with over the last few years and is popular amongst my favourite YouTube teachers and drummers. Probably because IT REALLY WORKS AND IS GENUINELY USEFUL! It’s also at the core of musical theory which makes it super musical as well and translates to other instruments. 65bpm+ unaccented single strokes working through quarter notes; quarter note triplets; eight notes; eight note triplets; sixteens; sixteen triplets; thirty second notes - and I love coming back down again. This can also be played using other common stickings such as doubles and paradiddles, and becomes remarkably challenging keeping track of the “one”! I have yet to try Flams and Drags but they’re on my radar. The accented Grade 7/8 Rockschool version can also be practiced, although the 5/7/9/10 tuplets are a bit bonkers and not really very useful for playing pop music. How many practice pads can one have? Well, you can have many, but most of them are very similar, so we wanted to bring you something a little different. Introducing the “Softpad”by Plachenov Andrey Drums @andrey_plachenov or PAD. These are custom-made by my fellow craftsman Andrey in Russia. PAD actually has other really interesting products like the “Twinpad” and “Rimpad” etc. but we are going to focus on the “Softpad” for now: we need the soft stuff in Singapore. The “Softpad” has two configurations: a simple 10” super-soft practice pad, and a 12” one with two additional padded rods. The reverse side is a wooden surface where you can practice your brush work. The purpose of these rods is so that you can practice vertical and lateral movements, other than the usual horizontal movements on a traditional pad. These sturdy rods are screwed in directly to the 12” pad. Scroll to see videos! You can actually treat each padded rod as a tom or cymbal, and can choose from three different thicknesses (and hence sounds). Something different for our guys here! The 10” softpad is retailing at $65 SGD and the 12” softpad with rods retails at $75 SGD. These are very well made and very quiet as well. Currently they will come in three colours: black, red, and blue. Custom colours and sizes should be available on request, because these are custom-made after all. Intrigued?
