Paola Santiago and the River of Tears by @tehlorkay may be my favorite @readriordan Presents book to date. As usual with the Riordan Presents line, the focus on Mexican mythology and folklore gave it a distinct flavor. However, the story impressed me even more by looking at how Latinx characters would experience this story differently from white characters (not being able to go to the police because they were automatically dismissed because of their brown skin, for instance). And I loved how the story didn’t shy away from contemporary issues, like child separation. I moved this up to the top of the to read stack because the sequel just came out; now I’m excited to read that one. #thismakesmehappy #books #2021reading #paolasantiagoandtheriveroftears #tehlorkaymejia #rickriordanpresents #middlegradebooks #middlegradefiction #middlegradefantasy #mexicanfolklore https://www.instagram.com/p/CSRyLDwF5SP/?utm_medium=tumblr

"Never underestimate a mother with a grudge"- Pao I thoroughly enjoyed this month's read for the #we❤mglit book club. I haven't read midweek grade books in so many years that I had forgotten how magical they could really be. This book was so nostalgic because it made me think about all the Latinx foklore and stories I grew up hearing as a little girl. It made me reminisce about all the monsters and magical creatures that I grew up hearing about and wanted to capture myself. The fact that La Chancla was a magical super weapon had me grinning from ear to ear like nobody's business. Paola was a fantastic protagonist. She was fierce, spunky, and had the biggest "don't quit" attitude. She was loyal and honest and would do anything for her friends. She was also ahead of her time and challenged societal norms about femininity. I loved that she was fascinated with science and space and tried to make sense of the world in her own unique, unapologetic way. She reminded me so much of my younger self, always pushing boundaries and thinking outside of the box. Although this was a fun, magical, supernatural tale it tackled some serious issues such as immigration, tradition vs. assimilation, feminism, racism and classism, medicine vs. natural alternatives, spirituality and the supernatural, missing children, mother-daughter relationships. These topics were weaved into the story so seamlessly that if you weren't paying attention you missed the bigger message. For me the biggest issue it shed light on is the fact that brown children disappear every day for unexplained reasons and no one really pays attention or goes searching for them. My heart just danced reading this one. I cannot wait for Paola's next adventure. This book dragon rates it 🔥🔥🔥🔥. #latinxstoriesmatter #readlatinxtales #ownvoices #representationmatters #paolasantiagoandtheriveroftears #rickriordanpresents #tehlorkaymejia #readmiddlegradebooks #we❤mglit #booksoutside #bookstagram #book #bookdragon #bookworm #booknerd #weneeddiversebooks #diversespine #diversifyyourfeed #latinxfolklore #decolonizeyourshelf #latinxfantasy #supportlatinxwriters #latinxreader (at Middle Village) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEX8xSlgLnT/?igshid=ats5w6oju9kk

“...skilled and superb writing...the brilliance of the book is how author Tehlor Kay Mejia has brought us another fresh face to the literary world with her heroine Paola, and how sometimes the most frightening aspect of the story is what people experience in everyday life.” - Four stars out of four @tehlorkay @laughing_place @readriordan @rickriordan @solurie #paolasantiagoandtheriveroftears https://www.laughingplace.com/w/articles/2020/07/27/book-review-paola-santiago-and-the-river-of-tears-by-tehlor-kay-mejia/ (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDKNzu2hUy7/?igshid=14vnl80atyi7p
