Just got these three early reader books (image 2) for the library after Instagram recommended them to me! And oh my gosh, they are the best!!! I've been so happy with how the I Can Read books have been increasing the diversity of their titles, and these are wonderful exemplars. I'll be posting about one of them each day for the next few days! Gigi and Ojiji by Melissa Iwai features a little girl who is excited for her ojiji (grandpa) from Japan to come stay with them. She can't wait to play tag with him, read books together, and introduce him to her dog! But when they meet at the airport, she sees Ojiji moves slowly (so no tag), he can't read the English signs (so no books together), and he shakes his head at her dog, who has peed on the carpet. Worst of all, she thinks he is laughing at her! But when her mom explains the cultural and generational differences, the two begin to bond. If given a choice, I would like to spend my time traveling across India visiting the homes and workshops of different folk artisans, observe them work, see their art materials, listen to their stories, learn their craft and have chai with them. The extensive research process behind Kesar and the Lullaby Birds, gave me this opportunity in its own special way. I got to learn about the history, practice and cultural significance of several folk art elements. The few research papers that I referenced were written by the students and professors of NID. Do you read kids books? 📖🧸🦖 I try to pick one up every once in a while and build our kids book library for when we start having little ones. I read Hair Twins by Raakhee Michandani and Holly Hatam in March and found it to be both sweet and educational! I will definitely make sure I have this book in my library for my future kids. I realized I never posted about New Kid after than my middle grade book haul. This was such an amazing graphic novel. On one level it’s a simple story of about being the new kid in school. On a deeper level, the author captured how microaggressions are happening every single day to people of color, and how it affects the way POC interact with aggressors, and makes them constantly on edge to find safe spaces. . What I appreciated about the New Kid is how effectively this graphic novel depicts this type of discrimination. Growing up I would have loved to read this, to understand that uncomfortable and uneasy feeling I got when people treated me or my parents with microaggressive language/behavior. It’s hard to stand up for yourself when you aren’t sure how to explain why you feel discriminated against. I highly recommend this to all readers, but especially young POC.
