Efforts to make a comic about this have been holding me back, so I did a simple portrait sketch in order to shove it aside and get things moving again. The news is that damage to the temporal branch of my right facial nerve, due to my craniotomy in April, now allows me to aim judgmental/quizzical expressions at whomever I wish, all day and every day. I never could move my eyebrows independently before, so maybe that's #thepresent here. Some say the nerve may regenerate. I keep testing it hopefully, and also trying to #mindfully accept things as they are. I'm lucky to have retained as much function as I have. #symmetryisoverrated . . #graphicmedicine #comics #illustration #braintumor #patientperspective

How long have you had diabetes?
  43 years
Does diabetes rule your life or do you control it?
My diabetes used to run around my life, but at this stage of my life I like to say it co-exists with my me. Not happily all the time but it most certainly does not rule my life. I have never liked the word “control” and do not use the same terminology. Though it still used a lot by medical…

"What do you think caused your addiction? How does it change your body or mind? These questions can start the conversation about the patient's explanatory model of addiction. Eliciting a patient's explanatory model can go hand in hand with understanding a patient's readiness to change and personal goals."
The biopsychosocial model of disease encourages us to share knowledge and decision-making with our patients, beginning with their understanding of their disease.

Q. What is pollen-food or oral allergy syndrome?
.
.
.
.
.
A. Pollen-food syndrome is an IgE-mediated allergic reaction seen most commonly in adults who have environmental allergies (respiratory sensitization) and then develop swelling/itching in the mouth/throat after eating raw fruits/veggies that have proteins that cross-react with their pollen allergy. Felicia Sabartinelli shares her personal story with Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS / Pollen Food Syndrome) and the importance of allergy education.

True/False: Most kids outgrow allergies to milk, egg, and/or soy by the age of 5 years.
.
.
.
.
.
TRUE! Most kids, like 6-year-old Samuel Hill, who are initially allergic to milk, egg, and/or soy develop tolerance by the time they start kindergarten.
Pro-Tip: Those with IgE-mediated wheat allergy may recover, while those with non-IgE-mediated wheat allergy (e.g. celiac disease) will not. Peanut and tree nut allergies also tend to persist.
