Penelope writes to Arthur
Tumblr media
Dear Sir, You were once very kind to Beau and myself and it pains me to ask you to show us further kindness, but I have nowhere else to turn and nobody else upon whom I can impose. I will of course pay you handsomely for your troubles. My family have turned quite mad and are threatening to send me away, to stop my work, which they say is disgracing them: As if their history of absolute moral depravity, utter debauchery and perpetual drunkenness did not disgrace them enough. I must escape, yet I am kept prisoner here. Can you help? Most days I am to be found at the cabins on the Planation. The main house and all it stood for are thankfully no more. Yours Faithfully, Penelope Braithewaite

Hi! Could I ask you to expand on the Charthur and Beau/Penelope parallels? I'll take any excuse I can get for more Charthur but I'm dumb and missing them
I would love to!!! I havent played through in a while so I might be forgetting/misremembering, but here's what I think.
First we need to look at two major themes of rdr2, which tie together very well through Beau and Penelope's story.
The first theme I want to talk about is Rich People Are Bastards. 4 of the major antagonists (5 if you count Dutch) are greedy fucks - Cornwall, Bronte, and the Grays and Braithewaites.
The latter two are so consumed by their rivalry that they destroy themselves, and probably would have ended up that way even without outside influences speeding them along.
The second theme I want to talk about is something Dutch says in chapter 4 in the Revenge Is a Dish Best Eaten mission: "Don't you ever leave love aside, Arthur. It's all we got."
Dutch's downfall is that he doesn't really love anybody. Sure he raised Arthur and John and built the gang from nothing with Hosea, but he doesn't love them, at least not during the events of the game. He only cares about Arthur through what he can do for him, and in fact it's Dutch's greed that sends Arthur to the Downes' ranch. He spent twenty years with Hosea by his side but didn't listen to his ideas much anymore, and I do think this may have been the catalyst to Dutch's downfall, but he was still taking him for granted.
His rivalry with Colm mirrors the Grays and Braithwaites almost prefectly: a feud so old neither of them truly remember how it started. They've both become driven by greed and a desire for control. And as much as Dutch claims he wants to get out after all these years, run away from his problems, there's no guarantee he actually has any plans to.
Beau and Penelope love each other enough to realize how screwed they are. They don't get respect or freedom, and they certainly don't get any of their families' supposed fortunes. But they love each other, and for them it's enough to get away from the only life they've ever had.
Beau and Penelope are what Charles and Arthur could have been.
Arthur has the sense, even as early as chapter 2, that the gang doesn't have much time left. Whatever happened in Blackwater, or even before then, that gave him that kind of foresight after twenty years of running, we can't be sure. Many fic writers including myself speculate that Charles himself helped open Arthur's eyes, not having been running with them long enough to be pacified by Dutch's talk of faith and plans, but I don't know how much in-game evidence there is to support that.
I've already talked about Charles leaving the gang and going his own way because he isn't selfish enough to let Arthur come with him, but I will reiterate that I think that's a major factor behind Arthur's unhappy ending.
Arthur put his family first, and while they weren't all together anymore at least they were alive. Charles, in trying to find his own family, put them first as well, although the game implies they didn't get a happy ending either.
I know I said they were parallels but now I think they're more like foils. Beau and Penelope are young, and optimistic, and selfish enough to run away together. Arthur has given up on love, and he thinks he's too old for a happy ending, and depending on how you play he doesn't think there's much good left in the world.
The game is trying to tell us that, maybe if things were different, Arthur and Charles could have been okay.

Love letter / journal entry From Beau to Penelope
Very cheesy, but hey, he tried. For those who don’t know, Odysseus is from the Iliad and is present in the Odyssey, both written by Greek author Homer. Penelope is his Odysseus’ wife.
Tumblr media
Oh Penelope! You are my wise Penelope. And I hope to be your brave Odysseus! It is as if my Troy were mere miles from Ithaca, yet the ground between were as unconquerable as any wine-dark sea. I would gladly suffer shipwrecks and desert islands to be with you -- I would fight one-eyed monsters (or my own grotesque cousins) and beat back a thousand suitors, if it meant we could share a kiss. Penelope! Penelope! Penelope! My love, my life. My home, my wife
