time to get pissed about the fact that constantine's father's hatred for and dismissal of him extends all the way down to his fucking name.

like yeah, john is a fine & normal name. he doesn't have any strong feelings about it and neither does anyone else. but john's mother wanted him, loved him, and iirc might have already had a name picked out for him before she died. (his older sister was named cheryl, which wasn't even in the TOP 100 most common UK girl names at the time, so there was a precedent for putting a lot of thought into naming her kids!!) and then she dies, and thomas just. doesn't. care. john, number one most common UK baby name for the four preceding decades. like john smith. like john fucking doe.

how it must feel to him when people say that name with actual affection instead of rage. how rare that is in his line of work. how different it must sound when he's wanted.

The assassination attempt on her right after her birth was orchestrated by her uncle Gromph Baenre. The assassin was killed, but was never interrogated nor the case was further looked into, due to the unrest this could cause in the family. Quenthel never shared her suspicions with Minthara, but she's always known it had to be someone in their own House.

She helped raise and train her brother Jereth, and the two of them were rather close, all things considered. He was nowhere near as much of a zealot as Minthara was, but he was a skilled strategist and assassin and she wasn't ashamed of calling him her second in command.

Minthara's position wasn't merely a matter of family name and title, but of military power and material wealth from her victories. This made her a threat, potentially capable of trying to take over the House especially after Quenthel became Matron, but also protected her from the machinations of other family members, including her mother's. She provided the House with goods, warriors, vassals, slaves and relative stability, to the point where getting rid of her would have been a reckless, unwise move even for the Mother Matron.

Of course, she never openly discussed her intentions of eventually killing her mother, but the thought had been in her mind ever since she decided to take this militaristic approach rather than become a priestess. The "competition" with her mother that she mentions refers to the very tense truce between Quenthel and Minthara after she attempted to kill her for the first time when Minthara came of age.

Her sister Dhaunirra chose to become a cleric, and developed a one-sided rivalry with Minthara. She always strived to be more traditional, more loyal to their mother, more loyal to their House— while Minthara barely even recognized her, and her own efforts to become relevant were always diminished due to the high expectations of her family. Her assassination attempt on Minthara was an act of desperation, hoping to claim everything that was hers, and humiliate her publicly by poisoning her during a feast in her honor. However, Jereth had been monitoring her, and Minthara was already aware of her plans. Dhaunirra bled out in front of an audience.

But on a kinder note, this also means that if he knows someone can’t afford what he should be charging as a private detective (like Helen), he won’t ask them to pay. He does this job because he cares about justice, he cares about humanity and the feelings of the victims and their families.
