Prayers Answered - written for the boy king Sam discord server prompt: Sam has grown up in a very religious environment. He's devoted, he goes to church, he prays. He knows that God is with him, because he listens to his prayers. But as Sam grows older, he realizes it's not God that's been listening. And he realizes that he's not asking - he's been ordering, and his loyal servants would never deny their King. (2k words; gen)

Brady tells Sam he knows how to stop the Apocalypse, and Sam, despite his better judgment, hears him out: Sam himself is the horsemen Conquest—aka the Antichrist—and he alone can bring Lucifer’s apocalypse to a grinding halt. Sam resists, but when he discovers the good he can do with his new powers, he decides to use them to atone for all his past mistakes. (21k, Sam/Brady, gen, AU of 5x03-5x04)

Lakeside Fishing - written for @denugis - After defeating Famine, after days of suffering through demon blood withdrawal in the panic room, Sam needs time to clear his head. Early in the morning, he heads to a small lake seeking solitude, but instead finds an unexpected ally. (4k words; Sam/Patrick; set after My Bloody Valentine; witch!Sam)

His Soul to Keep - art by @sketchydean - written for the SPN Eldritch Bang horror event - Dean’s deal is coming due soon. When he finds out from Ruby that Hell will turn him into a demon, he refuses to accept it, even though he can already feel pieces of his soul starting to crumble away. Sam is his only anchor to the world, and Dean finds it harder and harder to leave his side. After Broward County, after watching Dean die a thousand deaths, Sam decides he’s not going to let Dean go to Hell. He’ll do whatever it takes, even if that means allying himself with Ruby and using the darkness inside of him. Sam casts a soul-binding spell on Dean; they might not be able to break the deal, but they can change who Dean’s soul belongs to. (13k, Sam/Dean, hard-gen, AU of season 3))

Last Drop - art by @quickreaver -written for the Twisted Tropes event - Sam/Brady AU set while Sam’s at Stanford: Sam is slowly adjusting to his new life at Stanford University. He’s left his life of hunting behind, and traded it for endless studying and tests, but he’s plagued by dreams of Dean and Dad in danger, dreams of blood and violence. Then he meets Tyson Brady, who’s always there with a smile and a cup of coffee to get Sam through all-nighters. Sam’s dreams start to fade, but just as he’s getting used to a nice normal life, he starts to develop abilities—powers he can’t control. Brady thinks they’re great, but Sam knows power never comes without a cost. (14k, Sam/Brady)

Make Angels of Us All - art by @amberdreams1960 - Sam has a guardian angel. It’s been with him his whole life, trying to keep him safe. The angel gives Sam power he can’t control: power to move things with his mind, power over fire, and wings that nobody else can see—bony and jagged with scaly feathers. Dean says monsters aren't real, but Dad thinks they are. Sam's power scares him, and he’s not always sure what's real, but what he does know is people keep trying to kill the three of them, and he won't let that happen. (~20K, gen)

Burdens, Doublefold - cowritten with @quickreaver, art by ileliberte What if Dean left Sam at Stanford after the fire, hoping it would keep his little brother safe and make things better? Somehow, 'better' never seems to be in the Winchester Family cards. Sam gets tangled up with his ex-roommate Brady, tracking psychics, but dealing with demons is never honest business. Dean carries on until his father is put in grave danger. He is left on his own to deal, stumbling into Harvelle's Roadhouse for help, where Dean gets just a little more than he bargained for. Eventually, the brothers’ paths twist and turn their way back to each other, but the results could mean the End of Days. (67k, gen, AU of seasons 1-2)

Before the One You Serve When Dean comes to get Sam at Stanford, he finds him living with Brady. And Dean doesn't trust Brady, even though he can't quite put his finger on why. Not at first. (5k, Sam/Brady)

For the Sam asks: since i wasn't an active part of fandom until recently and for the most part i only see sam!love on my dash, i'm really curious about 20 and 21... can you enlighten me?

20. What is the worst thing the writers did to Sam?

Oooh, going for the jugular, are ya? :D This is a big question, one that us Sam fans differ on, but it's led to some really great conversations about Sam and his drives/internalized trauma. I love that for us.

For me personally, the worst thing was the first half of S8. Now, I will say that I get the feeling that either the showrunner tried to change horses midstream or valuable stuff ended up on the cutting-room floor, but the end result was an interpretation of Sam that painted him as completely in-the-wrong, from both a Watsonian and Doylist POV. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop; I kept waiting to get an official rationale for why Sam put every one of his cellphones in a box, tucked hunting away, and left Kevin flapping in the wind. I wanted some indication that Sam had had a full-on break down, that he wasn't even coming close to thinking straight, and his sepia-colored memories weren't even real, but alas, we got none of that.

We got the show sitting firmly in Dean's POV and his assessment that Sam simply "hit a dog" (and got a girl), and that was why he stopped hunting, leaving Dean fighting for his very existence in Purgatory. The show painted Sam as the villain here, and while I get that fundamentally, unless Sam continues hunting with Dean there is no show, the way they left us baffled as to why Sam did what he did made fandom an unbearable place for the entirety of the season.

I was on the verge of dropping the show, then they gave me The Trials and I'm such a goddamned hurt!Sam junkie, I was sucked back in. But to this day, I'm furious at Carver for what he did to Sam's character in S8. Loved Purgatory, ended up loving the Trials, but wow was it touch-and-go there for a while.

21. What thing Sam antis say about him makes you most mad?

Hmm. So much, all the many. But I think ultimately, it's when they interpret Sam as a whiny, coddled, thankless brat. Which usually couples with Dean as the altruistic, self-loathing mewmew martyr who was the recipient of all Sam's abuse. It's the weirdest, counter-canon reading I can think of, in its extremity, but I see it out there in the wild and it always makes me go

5. Best and worst hair?

Best is easy: the beginning of S8. Sam's hair is the BEST THING to come out of S8. Don't fight me cuz I'll kick yer ass. ;) S4 with the short layers and S14 with the brief grief beard are runners-up. S12 had some cute flippies going on, now that I think about it, but I loves me some long-haired Sam. I miss it.

Worst hair isn't so easy. While I'm not a big fan of the Sideburns of Doom or The Bob, when it all shakes out, S15 did Sam no favors. I don't mind his hair swept back from his considerable forehead (Sammy RichChester looked cute as fuck in his manbun!), but S15's hair looked dry and lackluster, kinda poofy and hairsprayed to death. What were y'all thinking, S15 Hair Department??

Obviously, this is watching the show. I dig drawing hair in general, so I find something of joy in every season! And I have the luxury to make it look sassy, no matter what. Thank you so much for enjoying my art, loveliest anon!! Sometimes it feels like I'm drawing for an audience of a wee handful of fans, which is fine! I mean, ultimately, you gotta please yourself. But it's always nice to know there are others out there, getting something out of what you create. <3<3<3

22. Favorite BAMF moment?

Already answered here, punkin! But basically, any time Sam drinks demon blood and uses his powers, I get all dewy, heh...

27. Your take on Bobby’s treatment of Sam? || For me S1-S3 Bobby is superior, but later? Uh... yeah no :/

Bobby had a clear fave and it wasn't Sam. But Bobby knows the Life is complicated, and he couldn't hate a kid. From Bobby's POV, I get it. Sam spent so much of his young life either unwittingly walking around with cursed blood or trying to leave hunting, and failing that, he wound up possessed, soulless, any number of dangerous, unpredictable scenarios. As a kid, I'm not sure Sam didn't sense this. It likely added to Sam's belief that he was a freak, a monster. But how many personal resources did Sam really have? Bobby had to be one of them, especially since Bobby was also connected to John and Dean.

Bobby definitely bonded more with Dean. As the show went on, he seemed to grow to respect Sam's heroism, maybe even love him as much as he loved Dean, or close to it. But Bobby was a damaged old drunk and not a benevolent foster parent. They all needed each other, tho. He was a fantastic character, yeah, especially in the earlier seasons! 17. Sam headcanon about the stanford era? (also requested by @ashtraythief !)

That it wasn't a walk in the park, despite his full ride. He wasn't gonna risk losing it because come on, scoring a full ride when you hardly stayed in one school an entire semester? That's no mean feat, and we know Sam had the tendency to burn the candle at both ends. So he likely worked his tail off and then some, beyond what he needed to. Also, despite his best intentions, I suspect he didn't give up hunting cold-turkey. When stuff crossed his path that set off his spidey-senses, he carefully looked into it. Old habits die hard. Until he started dating Jessica, that is, then he gave it up completely because he didn't want her dragged into the danger of the Life. I also think he would've become a public defender, had he continued in law school.

Oh, more also! Sam had a growth spurt in college. When Dean finally sees him again, he's a little jellies (and impressed), can't believe Sam is now taller than both him and Dad. How dare he go and do this??

18. wee!Sam headcanon?

This is a bit of a dicey one, because it involves Dean pretty heavily. I don't believe Dean was the all-sacrificing martyr that a lot of fandom seems to; I don't believe Dean was Sam's "only parent", or that Sam would never have managed a single accomplishment on his own without Dean's exclusive dedication and complete selflessness. Sometimes fandom acts like Dean played momma bird and practically pre-chewed Sam's meals for him. Which, please. I do love Dean but he was just a kid himself, one who did understandably kid things, and while Dean absolutely was given more responsibility than he should've at a young age, Dean is also, by nature, a hedonist and not a champ at resisting temptation. I know damned well (and we have some canonical events that back this up) that Dean snuck off to do Dean stuff sometimes and left Sam by himself . And Sam had every right to bitchface at Dean about it. Brothers, man. ;)

Sam wasn't a goodie-goodie or an immature kid for his age. He couldn't afford to be. They moved around constantly, were dumped with one caregiver or another, and John was likely one scant step ahead of Child Protective Services at any given time, so Sam (and Dean) had to stay as far under-the-radar as possible. This meant either not breaking the law or not getting caught doing it. Sam could be a handy little grifter — adults saw him as an old soul in a kid's body — but not breaking the law was safer, easier, and had fewer repercussions. 'Just My Imagination' validated my headcanon that Sam was a lonely kid. Dean, for whatever reason, didn't come off as a lonely kid; he's more gregarious and outgoing, made friends quickly. Sam just didn't. Dean wears his emotions on his sleeve, Sam keeps them tucked tightly under his vest. (original Sam Winchester ask post)

28. Whump Sam, yay or nay? NEED YOU ASK?? Oh so much yay. He just hurts so dingdanged pretty. But I don't dig it for the weakness and woobieness. I like him stalwart and waving-off help, because HE'S GOT THIS. Even when he ain't got it. And then Dean or whomever finds out later that Sam's been soldiering on against such herculean odds and my heart grows nine sizes.

29. Your thoughts on Sam and demon blood?

Again, all the yay in the world! (Surprising exactly no one who knows me :D) For a couple reasons, actually.

Yeah, okay sure, I've got a blood kink, so there's that. It's hot, it's iddy. Fight me. But there's also all the delicious baggage tied up in the demon blood plot. Sam was tainted with it, beyond his control. He had no say in this corruption, but had to suffer that bassline beat of it, thrumming through his veins, for all of his childhood and a good chunk of his adult life. (It's my headcanon that it never completely burned away because he never completed the Trials and that shit got incorporated into him on a genetic level, but I digress a tad). So here's Sam, feeling like a freak, unclean, unworthy, all through his formative years. That cannot help but do a number on one's psyche, especially given the family business. No one should wonder why Sam initially fought for a life that was "safe". In spite of this, however, he rises above. It takes some doing, though. He stumbles through addiction (wherein he gets buff and bloody and is it just me or is the room getting warm?), through a bit of hubris (because Sam values his own intellect and Ruby had him wrapped around her little finger—his dealer, his drug), but we cannot forget the WHY. He thinks he can make change. He can use this "flaw" as a merit. He can be the monster that saves the village. Or even the world. And with Dean's help (and sometimes in spite of Dean, and Cas for that matter), he does just that.

So yeah, big thumbs-up on the red stuff!

15 and 22 for the Sam ask game 👀

Okay, gonna do a couple of these a day for a bit! 15. Sam character dynamic that should have been explored more? Do they mean one of Sam's characteristics, or an interaction with another character they should've developed further? I'm gonna assume the latter, since there isn't another similar question on the list. Sam and Mary, probably. Firstly, they didn't spend much energy on Mary's motivations and feelings at all, in general, and her scenario of suddenly having adult sons and being blipped into practically a different era was RICH. We got hardly any exploration of this. But in terms of Sam, here was this legendary person he never got to meet. He only had hallowed stories of her. If anyone thinks Sam was emotionally nurtured and coddled by a grieving father and a brother only four years older—who just wanted to be a kid himself—that Sam had anyone in his life who actually functioned as the role of “mother”, well, I don't know what to tell ya. It didn't happen. Sam and Mary would've had so much to talk about: how to balance mundane life with hunting, about love, about loss. About family. I have a feeling Mary would've related so keenly to Sam as a fellow adult in The Life, and she would've grown to adore him. Instead, she ran from it, at least initially. I suspect part of the quandary was that they only had room for the character in so many episodes and had to come up with a Doylist reason to temporarily tuck her away. In true Dabb-era tradition, though, they did so in a way that didn't do the character one single favor. Sam would've loved to have had a person to express his fears to, his hopes, his dreams. It couldn't always be Dean, for reasons. It could've been Mary. 22. Favorite BAMF moment? Oh, dang, one of my very faves was Sam besting Famine (5x14, 'My Bloody Valentine'). Not only did Sam use their own tactics against them, he controlled the demons with the very powers they thought would ruin him, and strategized the perfect ruse to defeat the Horseman. To reward Sam for his bad-assery, Dean and Cas locked Sam up in Bobby's panic room to detox. Alone. Yay. At least Dean had the good graces to cry about it. (Sorry, Dean, buddy. You dropped the ball on this one. But it made for awesome television!)

I literally can’t believe that post- the actual AUDACITY of people to say that they are ‘anti purity culture’ in a fandom space, before lording their purity culture in the literal next sentence… they really have zero self awareness. None. They should be truly ashamed of how utterly stupid that sounded to anyone with a brain.

I don't think they're brainless, per se, lol! They don't want to be seen as puritanical, and hey, it's their event, they can run it however they want. I just think they're being pretty disingenuous in banning certain things and not others. Only the "right", approved kinks/ships allowed.

Technically, by their rules, any ship with a demon in it should be banned under their necrophilia clause. They mention nothing about noncon, a very real squick (and literal reality) for far more people, so I guess that's a-okay, over consensual adult incest? If they're worried about what's illegal in America (and it does seem like they're probably coming from an American mindset), there are a bunch of illegal activities the event still allows, including bestiality. Fourteen states in the US still have laws on the books forbidding “deviant” sex acts, including oral sex and sodomy. So what's really going on here? My guess, at a glance, is ship warring. All their little buddies will give them shit (oooh, you can write scat for the event, though, ha ha!) for allowing wincest, even though it's the second most popular ship in SPN.

They're comfy with some pretty out-there, potentially gooey taboos but not others (which are arguably more common), so the bottom (hurhur) line is that it's likely more about fitting in with their peer group. Stick to company policy. Must kinda suck (in a bad way) though to have to be just the right flavor of fan, have only the right fantasies, all the time, lest you get

I do wonder if WinCasWin is just barely pure enough to pass muster... or if the Winchesters can't even be in the same state when they make The Love. Or does Sam have to be the stereotypical good, straight ally, because that's what the Big Book of Destiel mandates? No, wait, that's Misha. No one can do it as perfectly as he did. <3 Not even Sam Fucking Winchester.
