I’m partway through Far Cry 4 and just got a cutscene with Sabal that made me wonder how much Ajay understands that he’s kind of in over his head here...

In the scene, Sabal is both implied to be (at least approvingly present during) torturing a prisoner, and when asked about Amita, basically says that he doesn’t need or maybe even want her around in the future. So his side of Golden Path leadership endorses torturing captured prisoners, and it sounds like he’s also (tentatively) down with murder for political purposes. He also makes a big deal about Ajay’s father because of his father’s role in creating the Golden Path, but he hasn’t yet shown any interest or care in Ajay himself in contrast to the “but I care about my people” thing that got me to select him instead of Amita for his mission.

Ajay is very eager to help the Golden Path and is understandably grateful that they rescued him (though only incidentally), and it’s obvious that Pagan Min is a brutal dictator running his state around a personality cult, but Ajay seems to know nothing about the Golden Path or the background of Kyrat’s civil war and political history in general. He also doesn’t speak Hindi (or any other language that might be spoken in Kyrat,) so he’s entirely reliant on people like Amita, Sabal, and Pagan Min’s Instagram voice messages for information.

Now Ajay is being asked to undertake assassination missions for an organization he knows almost nothing about embroiled in a war he also knows almost nothing about, when what he should be doing is running a rock climbing gym in Colorado and smoking blunts with Rabi Ray Rana over WhatsApp video as he decides whether to hyperfixate on composting in urban agriculture or vintage fishing gear for the next couple of years.

3. Opinion on the Golden Path?

oh god. talk about a double-edged sword! i think the Golden Path is the most realistic and biting part about FC4: that there are two factions that think they're doing what's best for their people, but both have hidden agendas and dubious or outright horrific methods to attaining their goals. Amita and Sabal are both awful, beneath everything they say to Ajay to sway him to their individual causes, and it really is like being submerged in cold water the first time you play through and have to face the consequences of whomever you supported and put in power.

5. Who is your favorite NPC?

Rabi Ray Rana! the dude cracks me up all the time, i loved just sitting in a car and getting to hear his little anecdotes between songs

10. What do you think about the setting? Did you like the difference between Rook Island and Kyrat?

I love Kyrat! I don't think it's fair to compare it to the Rook Islands, since while i love the RI and the tropical setting, being up in the Himalayas and getting to see the mountains and culture there is absolutely breathtaking. Even if those special snow missions up in the mountain peaks (where you have to run around and grab oxygen, you;re that high up) gave me a bit of anxiety, haha

I love the Rook Islands, Kyrat, and Hope County. Yara is beautiful but doesn't feel as balanced when it comes to NPC activity (enemies, animals, random events, etc.) as the other three, it sometimes feels like you're running around in an empty map in 6 compared to 3, 4, and 5, if that makes any sense, haha. Blood Dragon basically reskins 3's map and Primal does the same with 4's, but i enjoyed both of those lands as well!
