your recent is. such a weird post to make. 99% of the time anime will rely on displays of characters’ cultures like their names, where they live, and the activities they partake in to show that theyre japanese rather than character designs. all of these characters are clearly meant to be japanese and its whitewashing to say otherwise just because they dont look japanese to you. plenty of asians get told they dont look asian because their features dont match up with what others perceive as “asian features” and this is super reminiscent of that. i dont see what about the names “reigen arataka” and “shou suzuki” scream white to you

i absolutely see your point! however. i think its interesting to imagine a non-japanese person (specifically a second-generation white/white&japanese immigrant) in a dominantly japanese environment + it puts an interesting spin on reigen's character with how it at the same time would alienate him in society while helping him create the image of this Incredible Psychic [more thoughts under the cut]

reigen very obviously lived his whole life in japan and recalls it sometimes (his school memories come to mind); he is familiar with the traditional clothing, food and activities, folklore, geography and such. so i do believe he has lived his whole life in japan! however, seeing how we haven't got to meet or even see or learn the name of his parents, i truly think he could be a white-with-an-asterisk dude who was born in japan. so culturally he is as japanese as it gets, but that doesnt mean he couldnt have white* parents/roots!

as for his name. 霊験灼か (reigen arataka) is actually not a traditional name, but a pun on the japanese phrase    that sounds the same. so his name doesn't 'scream white to me' necessarily, but it isn't very strictly japanese either if that makes sense. even disregarding that and focusing on the possible-immigrant aspect:

first name arataka is self-explanatory, japanese (-sounding) name given to a kid who would need to integrate into the society (i am not actually sure that this name exists as neither the romanization nor the kaiju search return results besides reigen's name). and his last name reigen is not necessarily an originally-japanese surname -- it could be a katakana-zation of an english last name like Ragan or Ragen!

i also think that it would make sense to him to become a (charlatan) psychic because being white is seen as Other/Alien in the japanese society and it would add something of a mysterious prestige to his persona which would lead to more interest in his business etc. the other psychics who do psychic business in mp1OO present themselves in a pretty exotic manner (im talking hairstyle, clothes, tattoos) while reigen is just wearing a simple fucking suit and tie! and i think it would be really interesting if he had chosen to use his appearance/race to create this image of a 'professional foreigner who is very serious, competent and familiar with japanese culture/ghosts'.

i could write even more speculations re: his parents and races and heritages and just make up a whole shaky tower of headcanons but i dont really feel like researching it too long. what i will say from what i learned before falling too deep into this rabbithole: wiki lists reigen's birth year as a year of a rat. i think it's 1984 (would make him almost-thirty around when mp1OO was being published). before 1985, japan's jus sanguinis only automatically granted japanese citizenship to those who were born to a japanese father. so i think it would make sense for his father to be japanese/mixed and for his mother to be white*.

#this take on reigen makes his 'i was alienated as well when i was a boy.... i forgot my bento once and i was the only one without bento...' #quote SO very funny! but also SO very sad if i think about it bc if he mentioned the bento episode instead of his Wholeass Childhood #it means he cant relate to the other (japanese) characters with this other-ness he carried his whole life #IT CREATES DEPTH.... ITS A GOOD HEADCANON I THINK.... #+that one gay_marriage promotional art where reigen is wearing traditional japanese wedding attire and serizawa is wearing a suit!!! #its about the culture clash. its about trying to uphold the traditions and falling outside traditions bc of who you are (gay and white*)... #as for shou: to be honest i missed the part where his dad was raised in the seasoning city + only heard the part where he travelled around #so i thought it would make sense for shou to be an immigrant / mixed child as well. as i mentioned i havent delved into shou's deal #in conclusion #i want to say that this headcanon is not whitewashing because i didnt replace a minority with a white guy as the white guy Is a minority #and i didnt make an anime character white because i dont want/dont know how to draw japanese people #its specifically because i think being white + alien + different adds dimension to the guy! #thanks for the ask tho. i understand how the headcanon might seem without all this context that exists mostly inside my head #hope this explains it somewhat! #yoo my post

💥 COLLISON - what emotions do they have trouble dealing with?

Vincent – mistrustfulness; he's very suspicious and wary of everyone, always keeps his guard up around people he doesn't know (and those he knows as well). that's just how Night City conditioned him, each for himself. he's contracted trust issues because of than (and because of some family stuff back in the day) and accepting the fact that not everyone is after him is hard to accept.

Ragan – jealousy; he's very clingy and possessive, doesn't really trust his partner or believe in their faithfulness. he's tends to be controlling at times, Vincent leaving him in 2038 did a nasty number on him – and he has yet to heal from the betrayal.

🕷️ SPIDER - what is their biggest fear? do they have any irrational / mundane fears?

Ragan – being cast away from his current clan – Midnight Howlers; both his clans/families falling apart leaving him alone on his own again. he needs a group, a family; he's been a solo nomad for a few years in his early 20s and these were one of the worst years for him, every night he prays this won't ever happen again, does everything to keep his tribe strong and working, feels very responsible for it.

💡 LIGHTBULB - is your oc a planner? do they write down every small detail or just wing it?

Vincent – mostly a planner, he's organized, likes to choreograph his actions; however when it comes to merc work, he usually just wings it, lets years of practice and experience lead his actions – what he does usually follows the same/very similar plan/strategy anyway.

Ragan – a strict planner; less likely to wing anything or go with the flow. he's very careful like that. sometimes he gets spontaneous when it's not a serious matter or a situation he's familiar with.

☁️ CLOUD - a soft headcanon

Vincent – he baby-talks to his cat. Nibbles has this man acting in ways nobody could ever think of. he gives her all the kisses, shoves his face into her, carries and cuddles around everywhere. he claims he does not pick favorites among his pets but its clear as day this oversized bald rat is #1 in Vince's heart.

Ragan – he's very good with children; having grown up in a large nomad family, he often took a caretaker role upon himself when his parents wouldn't let him go on dangerous scavenging trips. young kids and babies love him, he's natural with them, but would not have a kid of his own. could possibly see himself fostering a young teen but being called a father would make him feel just weird.

Once, Gyrus and a party of fighters from the room of swords found a broken down fourwheel drive and decided to fix her up. This was around the same time Gyrus had Oli help him build parts for his ship, so building it provided the perfect cover for Gyrus to get Oli to help with a couple extra parts here and there.

When finished, the car was named Roving Rider, or Rovie for short. Ragan in particular fell in love with Rovie, and would often take her out for a spin just because, or have Cib drive while she raced.

Unfortunately one of the realms had a lot of secret quicksand, which Rovie fell victim to. Cib got trapped inside, and although Gyrus was able to rescue her, he couldn’t get Rovie out.

To make matters worse, an entire heard of the mounts came stampeding by, ripping Rovie appart with their clawed feet.

By the time the dust cleared, Rovie was no more than a pile of junk scattered to the winds.

Ragan mourned for weeks, so much that Gyrus offered to make her a new one, but she refused. The mounts had won, and she would respect their victory.

One of my favorite personal Spirk headcanons (which hell at this point, given how long I’ve been in Spirk fandom and how old everything is might be influenced or straight up borrowed from someone else idek anymore) is my personal scenario on how they might have initially met. 

There was a dinner and conference for the higher ranking officers of the Enterprise just prior to her departure for the 5 year mission. Jim was supposed to be aware of who his first officer was, of course, but it’s possible his eagerness to just get out there already might have distracted him from looking into the specifics. In any case, he was going to meet everyone tonight, wasn’t he?

There were cocktails and mingling prior to dinner and Kirk was something of the guest of honor. Rarely was he without attention and conversation, but there was one focal point of attention that managed to catch his eye in the flood of people and, yet, also continued to elude him; a long-eared, tall, lithe beauty that seemed to almost glide around the room.

“A Vulcan, Jim?” Gary snickered in his glass. He seemed acutely aware of Jim’s interest without any of it being spoken. He knew that look, no one better. “Well, I wish you the best of luck, but between you and me you’d be better off trying to woo a brick wall.” 

Kirk had no intention to woo, and not because of the infamous Vulcanian disinterest; pursuing...relations with another high ranking officer was not the wisest of ideas when starting off one’s Captaincy. This was hardly some Orionian bar in the far quadrant where one could slip off with a stranger they’d never see again and Kirk didn’t intend to treat it as such. 

Even so, he was drawn to the Vulcan for reasons that seemed to go beyond base-level attraction. Maybe it was those piercing, dark eyes that looked to be observing every molecule around them, framed by a chiseled, symmetrical face and sharp black eyebrows. Maybe it was the way he looked to be walking on silk. Maybe it was the puzzle-like intensity of him that he felt compelled to try to solve. Either way, despite his better judgement, Kirk finally made his way over to the Vulcan’s side, just as he was studying an oil painting on a far wall.

“A lover of Ragan, are you?” Jim asked, which caused the Vulcan to turn his head at a smooth snap. 

“Not particularly,” he replied after a time, his voice as deep and throaty as Jim had imagined it might be. “But I do appreciate the way he incorporates use of the golden ratio. It is rare to find such mathematical order in artwork of the like.” 

“That sounds like the vernacular of a scientist,” Jim suggested, a grin forming that he couldn’t really help. 

“You are perceptive, Captain- assuming, as I feel I must, that you have no idea who I am.”  

Jim raised an eyebrow, partially in confusion...partially, because he was impressed. 

“I admit you seem to have me at a disadvantage.” 

“Science and First Officer Spock- present, sir.” 

Jim’s mouth almost fell open of its own accord. He knew of Spock, of course, the Vulcan that had served admirably under his predecessor Captain Pike. To not assume that Spock would continue in his capacity under his Captaincy was, well...stupid. Jim realized that now, but after all, officers were known to transfer, promote to other crews and positions when there was a change in the chain of command. 

Jim had no ulterior motives for pursuing this conversation other than the pleasure of the intelligent, beautiful creature’s company before him, but even so, knowing it was Spock made him suddenly very self-conscious.  

This was going to be a long and, perhaps, very interesting five years indeed.

In addition to their big fancy huge wedding at the castle, I think OOT Zelink would also have a secret wedding in Kokiri forest where only close friends were invited. Impa would be Zelda's maid of honor and Saria would be Link's "best man" and I think The Great Deku Tree would initiate the wedding.

Ashei is like the only female knight at Hyrule castle so that’s why Zelda wants to meet her and first they form a friendship and once Zelda is close enough to her she tells her her biggest secret, that she likes girls, and Ashei is like “Me too.”
