At first glance those GM #RallyeWheels and the muscular stance of this car suggest “Muscle car” - and while it is classic #GMmuscle, it it also has fender skirts, and it’s a two-door sedan, not a hardtop. This unusual array of styles reflects the changing times of #1967 - #Buick then, as now, was not necessarily a performance brand, despite offering walloping V8 power in all of its models and two semi-performance products (the Wildcat and the Riviera). The #musclecar era was in full swing but the tri-shield had no pony car and the Special/Skylark was working overtime to satisfy the demands of multiple markets. Dealers wanted a car like the Pontiac GTO and they got one - the #BuickSkylark Gran Sport - in mid-1965. But the #GranSport was a modest seller compared to the GTO - in ’67 Pontiac moved 10 GTOs for every Gran Sport sold at Buick. At the bottom of the Special/Skylark line, the humble Special was a car for older folks or families - and with the famous #BuickV6 under the hood it had not strayed too far from it’s original 1961 mission - to take on mid-size imports. A bewildering array of Specials and Skylarks fell between these extremes - Buick offered 9 separate series of was was essentially just one car, counting the SportWagon. The Specials were economy-minded though they were also offered with V8s; the #Skylark was a little more upmarket. Only the base Skylark had the V6 and nobody seemed to want it - just 894 were sold in the final year of the V6’s availability before it was sold off to AMC for use at Jeep (it would return to Buick in 1975). At the top of the line were a pair of GSs - the GS340 (mostly an appearance package on a regular hardtop) and the GS400 with the big 401. In the era of hardtops and muscle, few buyers went for the two-door sedan - just 3,165 Skylark V8 2-door sedans were sold in 1967, most of them base models, which makes the fender skirts - an option added for 1967 to help the Skylark look more like the freshly-restyled LeSabre/Wildcat - a rare sight on a “post” coupe. The Skylark got a major redesign a year later incorporating the sweepspear themes of ’67’s full sizes. #ig_autoshow #americancars #Buicks #classicbuick #60s (at Ambridge, Pennsylvania)
