Why leaving the city to settle in the province is one of the best decisions in my life
I already drafted a post earlier, pero nawala lol. So, here's my second attempt.
Tumblr media
Before the pandemic, I was living in a condo along EDSA with my then-fiancee now-husband. We paid 18K monthly for a studio-type condo, with pool and gym amenities. It was a dream come true for me since my previous homes in the metro were in not-so-Instagrammable places.
So a bit of a history of my living situations in NCR:
I left Laguna since HS for college and stayed in a dormitory. There were about 2-4 girls per room and my parents who crawled my expense through graduation often paid my rent late.
Then, I graduated and vowed to not have my parents pay a single cent for me anymore. I lived independently paying ALL of my living expenses including rent, food. My first home that I paid for myself is another dormitory with about a 7 x 7 room shared by another girl.
Then, I lived in with my then-fiancee and toxic ex in a 2-BR apartment in the middle of a busy Manila baranggay. When he left me, along with needing to pay some unpaid rent, I moved into a smaller a 1-BR apartment. Both were in the middle of a noisy, crazy Manila neighborhood where people drink and gossip 24/7.
So, fast forward to the pandemic doom, I got initial info (being an EHS & BCP person) that there would be lockdowns. My then-fiancee now-husband and I then rushed packing and left our condo unit (even after spending hours panic-buying some supplies) to go home. We never really imagined the pandemic lasting years, so for the first 3 months, we lived with our parents... transitioning between his parents' place and mine while we work remotely. But then, since we are getting married, we decided to buy a house. If there's one thing the pandemic made us realize is that HEALTH IS IMPORTANT... and he and I both know that we cannot live in a boxed condo as a permanent home. Luckily, his work perks allowed us to choose a model unit (fully furnished but a bit outdated) so it's basically ready for occupancy. It took us barely 6 months to get the papers settled (while also preparing for our wedding) but we got it.
We now live in a 2-story house located in a city in Laguna, near an SLEX exit. I'll save the logistical, administrative costs and construction gulatan costs for another story, but we were able to save enough to have some improvements like a gate, home gym, pocket garden, and repainting. We'll be spending our third Christmas (WOW) here and yes, it's still the life I want because:
Province life allows for a slower, mellower life. I am not sure if I can put it into words but there's something about waking up, walking down the stairs, taking a peek at the window and seeing Lolas sweeping their front yard, smiling and waving at you. There are neighbors who even if we rarely go out, reaches out to us to ask how we are, share a laugh or two. There are kids going to and from school. Even the traffic is way way better, not only because its decongested but because people are not in a rush? Like, kapag naluwas kami para pumasyal or for work, even a 2-3 second delay from the go-signal would cause people behind us to hit their horns like they are dying. Gulat na gulat kami at how full of rage drivers are, while here, people tend to give way. Though may mga kupal minsan, pero like 1:50 ang ratio compared sa NCR na 40:50 ata.
Everything is accessible. Maybe it's the smart location that the village is located, but Nuvali is 15 minutes away so we get to do our weekend runs and grocery shopping there every weekend. When we want a different view, Alabang or Makati is barely an hour away. We also have access to foodpanda and Grab, so we can also order food. And, when we grow tired of that, we also have an online Facebook page for the village where we can order food and have it delivered too. Kanina lang nga, dahil naka-isolation kami, pati pandesal inorder namin sa online village store.
The view can easily put you in a better mood. I remember during the MECQs, we'll just jump in the car and do a quick drive-thru run to Mcdonald's or Starbucks. We'll sometimes bring the cats with us para masanay sila. We'll eat inside the car, just open the windows a bit and see lush greens around us. On days when work feels too much or when I get depressive or anxious episodes, we'll just drive around, and instantly, I feel better as we pass by trees, farm lands and sunset view. When we run too, there's always a mini trail to discover.
We are nearer to our families. Though we may not be able to visit them as often as we want, but connecting is easier. We can have lunch outs over the weekends, or they can easily visit us at home and spend some time together. Malawak yun bahay at bakuran, so they can sleep over. Kapag may emergency, iba pa din yun may mga kakilala kahit paano na pwedeng takbuhan. We have my husband's office mates near the village and my Dad's office is also 30 minutes away from where we live. So, minsan sa amin din sya nauwi. Our house also offers a breathe of fresh air sa Mom ko when she wants to relax and play with her apos aka cats LOL.
Expenses are cheaper. Gas, groceries, services are cheaper here. Though we are not safe from the ~golden era~, we do have options like talipapa or wet markets. Since nearer din kami sa mga sakahan or isdaan, mas mura din talaga yun mga fresh produce. Sa Nuvali and LB area, madalas din may community market. Also, the 18K rent we paid for the condo? Imagine we pay less than that and we are owning this house after a few years. To share, even the 7K rent I paid for the 1-BR apartment can pay for a house here in Laguna too. No, I don't think renting is a waste of money since tinitirhan nyo naman sya, but imagine how getting a house can be a future asset (yun lupa, hindi yun bahay, but that's also another topic). But basically, LAND does not decrease in value ever. Ever ever. Kaya din bahay kinuha namin over condo.
There is space - to move, to breathe and to grow. Literally and figuratively. Literally, I am lucky to have my own home gym, and garden and garage that like now that we are in isolation, we can move around. It's easier to partition our lives between work and home, kasi may home office din ako. May place to sleep, to eat, to work out and that's important for an ADHD person like me. There also is room to grow... ewan ko pero the more I see how people can live in the provinve, the more lumawak yun pananaw at pangarap ko. No, I don't want a bigger house, but I now know that having a slow and steady life is possible. Yun, hindi kailangan pagod at ngarag to earn money, because people here, maraming may passive income and all. Parang here, money flows in even when you don't do much. Hindi ko ma-explain pero siguro totoo yun kapag mas malawak yun paligid mo, mas feeling mo din hindi ka nakakahon? (Though, we really need to do some spring cleaning LOL kasi ang kalat na ng bahay.)
My mental health has greatly improved. Probably because of all the reasons mentioned above. But, you know, taking myself away from that hustle and bustle of the city, really allowed me to slow down and think about what I really want in life. Dito sa probinsya ko narealize na life doesn't need to be complicated. Dito ko din na-allow ang sarili ko stop when I tend to want want want a lot? Kasi, in the midst of every grit and grind work day, masaya ako to just slow down, have a coffee or a glass of wine and spend time with my husband and cats. And really, that's all I need. In a world that tells you that you need to work-out, prep food, be excellent at work, learn new things, have a hobby, stay connected with loved ones and all sorts of MUSTS, the province life allowed me to tone it down and just do what I can. The more we do so much minsan, the more we lose who we are... or that's how I feel. The province life allows me to be just me~ whoever I want to be.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know not everyone has this privilege, and for this I am grateful - for the opportunities that came our way, for the blessings given to us and for the hard work we put in. 🧿 It's weird pero the pandemic really did turn our life around, kasi naipakita sa akin kung ano yun importante - Health, connections and peace of mind. Yan lang pala talaga kailangan ko.
So, anyways, ayun lang. If you have the chance, give it a think. Alam ko hindi lahat possible ito sa work nila, but this is also why I chose to make it a non-negotiable when I consider work offers. Either remote or hybrid. Because this is now home and I can't sacrifice this peace for career progression or additional pay.
I hope you read this not feeling like I am boasting. Sa totoo lang, hindi ko inakalang dadating ako sa ganitong level of contentment... o baka natuto lang talaga akong maging grateful sa araw-araw. Good or bad, there's always something positive (gaya ng antigen test namin, eme). Nagpapasalamat lang talaga ako sobra for being here... so I really try to pay it forward too. My husband, I noticed, does the same na din. Every chance we get, we share our blessings.
Universe, thank you. I trust that 2023 would only bring us closer to the simple farm life we want. 🧿. 🪬. 👁️‍🗨️.

Why Self Drive Car Manila Options are Growing in Popularity
Seeking convenient transportation to navigate Manila's notorious traffic congestion? Flexible self drive SUV Manilayou skip rideshare fares and driver schedules, putting you solely in charge of your itinerary's destiny. Economical hourly to multi-day DIY rentals in Metro Manila offer affordable on-demand vehicles tailored to your independent travel needs.
Let's examine key reasons self drive car options make ideal local transportation providers:
Tumblr media
Freedom Exploring at Your Own Pace
Self drive car Manila for yourself means you control where you go and how fast you go, not some tour guide or driver on a schedule. Stop to take pretty photos without impatient hired drivers rushing you back to the vehicle.
Explore those small, interesting neighborhoods that bus tours skip. If you see something awesome like a fruit festival or artisan market, just pull over and check it out on a whim without rearranging booked tours. No waiting on other late people to start your adventures. Simply drive off solo or just your family or friends seeing what you want without pleasing impatient chaperones. Who doesn't want a vacation at your own fun pace?
Tumblr media
Cost Savings Over Rideshares
Using Grab or taxis everywhere in Manila means paying over and over, wasting cash that is better spent on sites and souvenirs. But planning with a full-day self-rental car locks costs in one reasonable lump sum without annoying surge price increases at rush hour. No extra charges for additional passengers that cabs and rideshares often sneak in. Plus, filling your rented car’s gas tank is way cheaper for long distances than paying separate fares on 3+ different Vans for Rent Manila required to fit your whole family or friend group. Self-driving really saves money for flexibility.
Transporting Groups Comfortably
Booking multiple Car Hire with Driver Manila fitting your family reunion, tour group, or squad of friends becomes a frustrating coordination headache. Who rides with whom? Where and when should different cars meet up for meal stops or attractions? Making complicated travel arrangements inevitably leaves people confused, separated, or left behind at the wrong stop.
However, spacious 11- to 15-passenger vans from self-drive rental companies consolidate full parties into single vehicles, keeping everyone together seamlessly. No chaos trying to meet back up after museum visits or dinner spreads apart. Groups relax comfortably, conversing together in cabin space ample for extra luggage, too. Making memories together instead of logistical juggling acts proves much more fun and convenient thanks to self-drive van rentals integrating groups under one roof.
Safer Cleanliness Standards
The rideshare revolving door of preceding passengers interjects cleanliness uncertainties. But reputable self-drive rental companies like RBCS Rent a Car adopt stringent enhanced interior sterilization, ensuring back-to-back patrons receive germ-free cabins sanitized, upholding your health, safety, and peace of mind.
Conclusion
While old car rental models forced navigating inflexible processes, modern self drive van Manila in Manila merge ultimate convenience with value pricing. Explore freely without wait times nor surcharges using Citymapper road trip companion apps, increasing navigation confidence and discovering cultural gems. Wherever your journeys lead, self-driven freedom makes the ride more gratifying than the destination!
Visit RBCS Rent a Car, unlocking your next DIY Manila adventure via wide selection of self-drive vehicles catering to safety and affordability priorities for couples, families and organizations. Book direct online, then simply pick up keys exploring town worry-free!

Finding a nice vacation area? I think you are looking at the right place!
Tumblr media
CAGAYAN, Philippines – Lying in the vast blue sea in northernmost Luzon, Calayan Island is one of the most unexplored destinations in the entire Philippine archipelago.
Here on the island, luxury can have a new dimension. Luxury in this jewel island means the ability to discover the island’s many and varied attractions.
Calayan Island is one of the 29 towns in Cagayan province. It is neighbor to the country’s northernmost province, the Batanes Islands.
The island is only for the brave tourists. As every islander is prone to say, "You have to pass hell before paradise."
From Metro Manila, the capital of the Philippines, you have to travel to the ports of Sta Ana, Aparri, and Claveria towns in Cagayan province, and be ready to ride rather treacherous giant waves. Here, "giant" is literal as the waves are largest in this part of the Babuyan Seas. For some 5 to 9 hours depending on where you take off, be ready for a wet party on board.
While traveling, you’ll have to pass different islands, including the Camiguin, Fuga, and Dalupiri Islands.
Don’t fret. If you’re lucky, a family of dolphins will be on guard, swimming close to your outrigger boats locally known as lampitaw, or you can have the rarest of rare chances to meet the beautiful and gentle humpback whales which had declared that part of Cagayan’s creation as their feeding and breeding grounds for centuries.
As you arrive at the ports of Calayan, you’ll be welcomed by smiles and hospitality of the local residents. There are no taxis or cars to rent in the island. You'll have to ride an improvised cargo motorcycle, or a rural vehicle called kuliglig.
Now slowly waking up, the island municipality including its barangay islands, is posing a serious threat to other established destinations, even giving others a run for their own money in terms of attractions.
As many other islands in the country, Calayan has its own unique attractions to offer. One of them is the Sibang Cove.
Tumblr media
SIBANG COVE
Sibang Cove, with its high walls of rocks, offers adventure tourism even as one lazes on fine white sand.
The cove also features rock formations that dot the shoreline and green and clear seawaters to dive into.
Tumblr media
Just beside the cove is the Nagudungan Hills. From the seashore, you’ll have to climb a steep hill. From above, you can watch the vast blue ocean, beautiful rock formations, and the spectacular sunset.
The mountains will speak to you about giant clams embedded on rocks, and how these have since generated interest among archaeologists worldwide.
After viewing the sunset, you can visit an ancient burial jarsite at the foot of the hill. It is believed to be where the old Calayanos buried their dead.
The island also boasts of a cave called Lussok, in English, a hole. It can be reached through a 30-45 minute boat ride. From the boat, you can view the twin holes of the cave. The cave features black and scaly rocks, and a clear green lagoon, best for diving and swimming.
After Lussok Cave, you can visit the nearby Bataraw waterfalls that are at least 30 feet high. Not so high but good enough for swimming as the water below is only waist-deep.
Other tourist attractions in Calayan include the Malangsi Falls and Cave, the diving and snorkeling sites, the Camiguin Smith Volcano in a nearby island, the Calayan Community Church, and the long coastlines of white beaches and resorts.
Still striving
But with all these tourist attractions in this small community in the northern part of the country, locals are still striving to offer a comfortable and safe haven for visiting tourists.
Mayor Alfonso Llopis told Rappler that over the years, the group of small islands of Calayan has received barely enough funds to develop and boost local tourism, as most of the road networks going to different tourist attractions are yet to be concreted.
From the poblacion alone, tourists have to trek and walk for an hour or more just to get to the nearest and most accessible tourist attraction, the Sibang Cove. Most of the attractions could be reached only by boat.
Aside from the unpaved roads, one of the main challenges for tourists and even for the locals is the inadequate source of power all over the main island.
The power, supplied by the National Power Corporation, works for only 12 hours, from 12 noon to 12 midnight. You’ll have to be willing to tolerate the warm weather in the summer months.
The island also has no school for tertiary education. While there was once an operating “extension” of the Cagayan State University, Llopis said the teachers have since been pulled out and have yet to talk to university officials.
Given this situation, students who want to pursue college are forced to move out to the mainland Cagayan.
But with the current administration of President Rodrigo Duterte, Llopis hopes there will be “aggressive” funding from the national government as even the Department of Tourism’s new secretary has seen potential in the island.
With an airport expected to open soon this year, the island is now preparing for the influx of more tourists.

The island town’s tourism focal person Erick Natividad said they are now working on the accreditation of hotels and resorts, tourist inns and homestays to assure the safety and comfort of tourists.

The Covid-19 economic shock (NYT) The economy’s recovery from the fastest, deepest recession in U.S. history is likely to be a long, grinding affair. More than $6.5 trillion in household wealth vanished during the first three months of this year as the pandemic tightened its hold on the global economy, the Federal Reserve said this week. That’s roughly equivalent to the economies of the United Kingdom and France combined. “This is the biggest economic shock in the U.S. and in the world, really, in living memory,” Fed Chair Jerome H. Powell said Wednesday. “We went from the lowest level of unemployment in 50 years to the highest level in close to 90 years, and we did it in two months.” Almost 90 percent of the 20 million workers who lost their jobs in April said they had been laid off temporarily and expected to return to their jobs, a possible sign the economy might quickly return to normal. Yet economists are far less sanguine. After a quick initial bounce this year, the economy “will go largely sideways” until a coronavirus vaccine is developed, according to economist Mark Zandi of Moody’s Analytics.
Tenants behind on rent in pandemic face harassment, eviction (AP) Jeremy Rooks works the evening shift at a Georgia fast-food restaurant these days to avoid being on the street past dusk. He needs somewhere to go at night: He and his wife are homeless after the extended-stay motel where they had lived since Thanksgiving evicted them in April when they couldn’t pay their rent. They should have been protected because the state’s Supreme Court has effectively halted evictions due to the coronavirus pandemic. But Rooks said the owner still sent a man posing as a sheriff’s deputy, armed with a gun, to throw the couple out a few days after rent was due. The pandemic has shut housing courts and prompted most states and federal authorities to initiate policies protecting renters from eviction. But not everyone is covered and a number of landlords—some desperate to pay their mortgages themselves—are turning to threats and harassment to force tenants out. The evictions threaten to exacerbate a problem that has plagued people of color like Rooks long before the pandemic, when landlords across the U.S. were filing about 300,000 eviction requests every month. The data and analytics real estate firm Amherst projects that 28 million renters, or about 22.5% of all households, are at risk of eviction.
Pandemic leads to a bicycle boom, and shortage, around the world (AP) Fitness junkies locked out of gyms, commuters fearful of public transit, and families going stir crazy inside their homes during the coronavirus pandemic have created a boom in bicycle sales unseen in decades. In the United States, bicycle aisles at mass merchandisers like Walmart and Target have been swept clean, and independent shops are doing a brisk business and are selling out of affordable “family” bikes. Bicycle sales over the past two months saw their biggest spike in the U.S. since the oil crisis of the 1970s, said Jay Townley, who analyzes cycling industry trends at Human Powered Solutions. The trend is mirrored around the globe, as cities better known for car-clogged streets, like Manila and Rome, install bike lanes to accommodate surging interest in cycling while public transport remains curtailed.
Mexico desperate to reopen 11 million-job tourism industry (AP) An irony of the coronavirus pandemic is that the idyllic beach vacation in Mexico in the brochures really does exist now: The white sand beaches are sparkling clean and empty on the Caribbean coast, the water is clear on the Pacific coast and the waters around the resort of Los Cabos are teeming with fish after 10 weeks with no boats going out. There are two-for-one deals and very eager staff. It’s all only an airline flight—and a taxi ride, and a reception desk—away, and that’s the problem. There are a number of ways to think about it: Might it be safer to travel than stay home? How much is mental health worth, and, if people are going to socially distance anyway, why not do it in a beautiful, isolated place? On the other hand, despite the pandemic, flights are often crowded, even hotels in Mexico that bend over backward to disinfect everything have little capacity to actually test their employees, and while fellow guests are likely to be few and far between, they also probably won’t be wearing masks. In Quintana Roo state, where Cancun is located, tourism is the only industry there is, and Cancun is the only major Mexican resort to reopen so far. Mexico’s tourism income crashed in April, when it was only 6.3% of what it was one year ago. Hundreds of thousands of hotel rooms were closed. Tourism provides 11 million jobs, directly or indirectly in Mexico, and many of those workers were simply sent home to wait it out.
Top US diplomat finds virtual path into Venezuela amid rift (AP) A year after shutting down the U.S. Embassy in Caracas, Washington’s top diplomat in Venezuela has found a way to slip back inside the South American nation—at least virtually. Each Thursday afternoon, James Story hits the “Go Live” button on Facebook from his office in the U.S. Embassy in Bogota or his home in the Colombian capital hundreds of miles from Caracas. In a freewheeling approach, he answers questions in fluent Spanish from Venezuelans and the few U.S. citizens still in the country, addressing the latest intrigue and turmoil bubbling over in Venezuela and the United States. For 30 minutes, Story talks about everything from Venezuela’s purchases of gasoline from Iran, despite its vast oil reserves, to recent unrest in the U.S. over George Floyd’s death in police custody to accusations that President Nicolás Maduro is undermining Venezuela’s constitution. Story’s low-budget, weekly question-and-answer session on the popular social media platform is a way for Story to get his message out since he’s deprived of traditional tools such as visiting hospitals and schools, talking to local reporters and hosting cocktail parties for power brokers.
Colombia’s confirmed coronavirus cases rise above 50,000 (Reuters) Reported coronavirus cases in Colombia have risen to over 50,000, the country’s health ministry said on Sunday, as neighboring Ecuador approaches the same milestone. The disease overwhelmed Ecuador’s health system, in some cases leaving authorities unable to collect the bodies of the deceased and forcing the government to temporarily store corpses in refrigerated shipping containers. Colombia’s economy has been battered by the twin ills of a coronavirus quarantine put in place by President Ivan Duque and falling oil prices.
Europe’s borders reopen but long road for tourism to recover (AP) Borders opened up across Europe on Monday after three months of coronavirus closures that began chaotically in March. But many restrictions persist, it’s unclear how keen Europeans will be to travel this summer and the continent is still closed to Americans, Asians and other international tourists. Border checks for most Europeans were dropped overnight in Germany, France and elsewhere, nearly two weeks after Italy opened its frontiers. The European Union’s 27 nations, as well as those in the Schengen passport-free travel area, which also includes a few non-EU nations such as Switzerland, aren’t expected to start opening to visitors from outside the continent until at least the beginning of next month, and possibly later.
Surveillance tech (Worldcrunch) Following pushback from Black Lives Matter activists, Amazon has suspended police use of its facial recognition software for one year. IBM followed suit, also announcing it will stop offering its similar software for “mass surveillance or racial profiling.” But the moves come amid a tumultuous few months for so-called “surveillance tech,” which some have touted during the pandemic as a necessary tool to ensure public cooperation to stem the spread of a deadly virus. Despite the potential medical benefits, the use of geolocation technology to curb COVID-19 has raised concerns over fundamental data protection, especially in countries like China, South Korea and Israel where tracking has been more intrusive: enlisting credit card records for purchase patterns, GPS data for travel patterns, and security-camera footage for verification. In Russia, the pandemic proved a convenient excuse to test a nascent, China-inspired citizen monitoring system, backed by a Moscow court ruling in early March stating that the city’s facial recognition system does not violate the privacy of its citizens. Even places not particularly known for their police state-like tactics are pushing limits: In Paris, cameras were installed at the popular Châtelet metro station to monitor mask use, as it is illegal to take public transportation without a mask. Similar (and seemingly well-intentioned) efforts like fast-tracked coronavirus data collection apps have raised suspicions of data protection breaches by both hackers and governments, including in the Netherlands and South Africa. In Germany, a country known for its hard stance on privacy protection, new surveillance tools are being met with a considerable amount of defiance.
American sentenced to 16 years in Russia on spying charges (AP) A Russian court on Monday sentenced an American businessman to 16 years in prison on spying charges, a sentence that he and his brother rejected as being political. The Moscow City Court read out the conviction of Paul Whelan on charges of espionage and sentenced him to 16 years in a maximum security prison colony. The trial was held behind closed doors. Whelan, who was arrested in Moscow in December 2018, has insisted on his innocence, saying he was set up. Speaking after the verdict, U.S. Ambassador John Sullivan denounced the secret trial in which no evidence was produced as an egregious violation of human rights and international legal norms. He described Whelan’s conviction as a mockery of justice and demanded his immediate release.
For Migrants in Russia, Virus Means No Money to Live and No Way to Leave (NYT) Migrant workers from Central Asia, shrugging off the risk of coronavirus infection, have gathered in groups each day outside their countries’ embassies in Moscow, banging on doors and fences and shouting for officials to come out and tell them when they can finally get on a charter flight home. With regular flights canceled, charters offer the only feasible way out for the more than five million migrant workers from former Soviet republics now stranded in Russia as a result of the pandemic, with many living in increasingly dire circumstances. While Russia has been battered by the virus, with the third most cases in the world after the United States and Brazil, the crisis has hit migrant workers especially hard, as they were the first to lose their jobs and often the last to receive medical help. Many have no money for food and, once infected with the coronavirus, have been left in crowded dorms to fight the disease by themselves. Many would like to return to their countries. But they can’t. Before the pandemic hit, more than 15 flights left Moscow each day for various cities in Uzbekistan, Central Asia’s most populous nation. Today, there are only two charters a week, and the embassy’s waiting list has more than 80,000 names.
Press freedom in the Philippines (Foreign Policy) The journalist Maria Ressa, the founder of news site Rappler, has been found guilty of criminal libel by a Manila court in a case Human Rights Watch described as a “devastating blow” to press freedom in the Philippines under President Rodrigo Duterte. Ressa and another Rappler journalist, Reynaldo Santos Jr., were sentenced to up to six years in prison under the country’s cybercrime prevention act of 2012, which includes libel. The article that was deemed libelous predated the law, but a later online update of a typo was enough for prosecutors to consider it worthy of an indictment.
18 dead, 189 hurt as tanker truck explodes on China highway (AP) A tanker truck exploded on a highway in southeastern China on Saturday, killing 18 people and injuring at least 189 others, authorities said. The explosion caused extensive damage to nearby buildings. One photo showed firefighters hosing down a row of buildings with blown-out facades well into the night. The truck carrying liquefied gas exploded around 4:45 p.m. on the Shenyang-Haikou Expressway south of Shanghai in Zhejiang province, the official Xinhua News Agency said, citing local authorities.
Hong Kong families, fearing a reign of terror, prepare to flee the city (Washington Post) China’s Communist Party has haunted Leung’s family for generations. Her father, Guo Yao, fled forced labor and the violent purges of the Cultural Revolution for a better life in Hong Kong, where he arrived with his wife in 1973 to find relative freedom and prosperity. Now, 17 years after the death of her father, Leung is preparing to flee Hong Kong. A new law approved by the Communist Party to take effect this summer will allow China’s powerful state security agencies to operate in the territory, paving the way for political purges and intimidation of government critics by secret police. Officials are pushing to impose party propaganda in schools. With their political freedoms deteriorating, nurses, lawyers, business people and other skilled workers are rushing to renew documents that could provide a pathway to residency in Britain, or finding ways to emigrate to Taiwan, Canada or Australia. Applications for police certificates required to emigrate soared almost 80 percent to nearly 21,000 in the latter half of 2019 from a year earlier, even before the advent of the security law, coinciding with a crackdown on pro-democracy protests. Animal rescue groups have reported an increase in surrendered dogs as their owners leave Hong Kong. Protesters fearing persecution have sought refuge in Germany, the Netherlands and United States. The exodus of talent recalls the pre-handover years, when anxiety over Beijing’s rule drove tens of thousands of people out of Hong Kong.
Netanyahu turns to rich friend to fund corruption trial fees (AP) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is on trial for accepting gifts from wealthy friends. But that has not stopped him from seeking another gift from a wealthy friend to pay for his multimillion-dollar legal defense. The awkward arrangement opens a window into the very ties with billionaire friends that plunged Netanyahu into legal trouble and sheds light on the intersection of money and Israeli politics. Netanyahu has asked an Israeli oversight committee to allow a 10 million shekel ($2.9 million) donation from Spencer Partrich, a Michigan-based real estate magnate, to fund his legal defense. The request for financial aid from a friend is not illegal, and Israeli politicians have a long tradition of hobnobbing with wealthy Jewish supporters abroad. But to some, the optics of Netanyahu’s request are sketchy. “It is a problem that we have prime ministers who have ties to moguls,” said Tomer Naor, of the Movement for Quality Government in Israel, a good governance group. “When the borders blur, you are blinded by the big money. You want more of it. Then all of a sudden the friend asks for a little favor and that poses a problem.”
Nigeria attacks (Foreign Policy) At least 141 people were killed in two militant attacks in Northern Nigeria over the weekend, both have been claimed by Islamic State West Africa Province. The attacks in Monguno and Nganzai districts of Borno state killed at least 60 people, while a separate attack in Gabio district killed at least 81. The United Nations, which has a humanitarian base in Monguno, said it was “appalled” by the attacks.

Entry #16 // 6/6/2020: March & April 2019
March was the most hair-down month of my life.
I was going to parties, getting drunk, meeting a lot more people. I was having the teenage experience that I always see in movies. I never thought I’d have this opportunity, but here it is.
Aside from all the partying, letting myself go, and whoring around, March went on just like the other months. Lots of skipping school, and you know the rest of the list already by this point. I went to La Salle a lot for Justin, and at some point I was a DJ for this podcast we had to make for a school project. It was fun reading out relationship advice from other people about how to make long distance relationships work.
At this point in my life, I was at Mang Inasal every week, flooding my rice with chicken oil and drowning my chicken with soy sauce mixed with calamansi and some chili. At some point I also managed to actually go on an out-of-school lunch with Franze. I haven’t talked to her in a while so it surprised me that she was willing to hang out it. It was my fault we stopped talking anyway. I kind of ghosted her, but she was still trying to reach out and everything in social media.
I went out a lot, explored more of Metro Manila. I slept in class, excused myself from class to buy food to bring back to class, and all that stuff.
La Salle hosted a Greening fair, which was an initial orientation to give you a tour around campus and what it’s going to be like if you do choose to study there. It was fun, because a lot of people from my high school attended it so it was like we basically invaded La Salle.
By the end of the month, there was a grand recognition program in my school since we’re all going to be graduating soon. I won two certificates, one for my academic and one for my organization. It was the first time I’ve received a certificate in years. I was thoroughly surprised that I was awarded an academic certificate because I skipped school a lot. Granted, I skipped school to focus more on my school work, it just felt surreal.
April came around and it was time to graduate. It was the first time in a while that I actually looked for Reed. I thought about her, and I saved a ticket just in case she was going to end up deciding on attending my graduation.
I didn’t let it ruin my day that she didn’t.
Justin went and my parents did too. Justin took awesome graduation photos. I was really lucky to have him there. He gave me a bouquet of flowers, and his friend Kristine gave me a Starbucks card with 500 pesos in it. She wrote a letter on the case saying that it was so that I had something to spend the next time I cut class for a cup of coffee.
After graduation, I attended more parties. This time it was mostly with my batchmates and org-mates. I attended our theater organization’s cast party, and it was wild. I jogged around Mckinley Hills beside a car being driven by my friend while I was smoking a cigarette. The whole situation contradicted itself, I know. To explain, I had a cigarette lit and my friends were going on a car ride to escape from the party for a little bit, but our friend who owned the car didn’t want the cigarette to stink up the vehicle so I had to jog beside it until I finished smoking.
After the cast party, there was another batch-party and it was our Grad(uation) Ball. It was hosted in Shangri-La BGC and the food was a lot better than the food in Conrad that we had for Prom. I didn’t feel too nice about the ball. They served a block of butter in a plate for the bread that they served, and I was just reminded of Reed for most of the evening especially when the plate of butter was right in front of me. After the ball, we headed over to the B&B that we rented and just drank together with friends. I passed out on the couch.
A few days after, I went back to my school to claim my report card. I wasn’t that worried since I graduated with an academic award. I saw some of my friends while I was there and I hung around a little bit.
Fast forwarding a little bit, I hung out with Justin some more. One time, I even escaped out of my house at 12am to head to his house and I just headed back home at 5am. I also slept over at my friend, Aly’s, house to binge watch all the MCU movies because Avengers Endgames was about to screen. Speaking of Endgame, I actually bought a ticket to watch the special fan screening premiere of the movie at SM Megamall and I went with one of my mutuals in my twitter fan account.
By the end of the month, I’ve cut my hair really short. I went to my friend, Wacky’s, condominium and drank with our other best friend, Cherry.
That same night, Reed messaged me.

Best Travel Tips to Help You Enjoy Your Trip to Manila
Manila being a historic city is popular amongst the tourists. The Spanish in the 16th cent had once occupied the city then by the British for a brief period and then by the U.S. During Manila tourism the attractions of the city has got to offer every traveler something. The tour of Manila would include day trips, educational tours, religious tours and many others.
Many who travel to Manila find that the cosmopolitan capital of the Philippines is the most exciting city in Asia, offering a blend of cultures, a good supply of historic sights and places to see, and unforgettable experiences. Another plus for a holiday in Manila is that the city is as lively at night as it is during the day.
Manila can be a very discombobulated place, for it is really just a collection of towns with no definable centre. The walled Intramural area was the traditional centre of Manila, but was mostly wiped out in WWII and has never recovered.
Peak season for a holiday in Manila is between November and February when the generally high tropical temperatures drop to reasonable levels.
While during Manila tourism the tourist attractions includes museums, scenic beauties, the walled city, the forts that would be a unique experience all together. The Intramuros at the mouth of river Pasig is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in the world.
The Manila tourism would also include shopping and the traveler can visit the Ortigas Center that includes malls and has everything that the traveler wants. The other attractions include the flea markets and the best places to go would be the Baclaran, Divisoria and Quiapo.
However, the city really does offer an inviting tourist scene, with hotels, restaurants and an excellent nightlife to be found never far from the Roxas Boulevard, the Taft Avenue and the Pasig River. Rizal Park (Luneta) lies just to the north of the city's famed tourist belt and forms the very heart of the city, overlooking the beautiful Manila Bay and dates back some 200 years.
During Manila tourism the traveler can make use of the Light Rail Transit, cabs, buses and jeepneys. The other means of transport is the tricycle that is available in the inner city roads.
A vacation in Manila is recommended for young, energetic travelers who enjoy sightseeing, shopping malls and plenty of after-dark activity like the city's infamous go-go clubs and wild nightspots.

My Hometown: Baguio
BAGUIO CITY  ❤
Baguio City, the Philippines’ summer capital that proudly boasts itself with a kind of captivating beauty of which no other tourist spots can ever replicate. The City of Baguio has an awesome type of climate that never changes all year round. In fact, the chilly and spine tingling weather is perfectly suitable for everyone especially for family, friends and etc., the world over.  Baguio City is now easier to get to from Metro Manila, so much so that a weekend trip isn't as far-fetched as it once was. It's not exactly a new tourist destination, but there are ways you can enjoy the City of Baguio even if you go through the classic tourist spots.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS IN BAGUIO
Burnham Park
Riding on the the boat on lagoon.
Burnham Park lies in the heart of Baguio City in the Cordillera Mountains of the Philippines. The park was a central feature of Baguio when the city was first planned and developed as a retreat for the US military, and remains today as a beloved landmark. Baguio, with its mild climate, is a popular tourist destination for Filipinos seeking a retreat from the heat of the lowlands, and Burnham Park serves as a major attraction for both relaxation and recreational activities. In Burnham Park, you may rent a boat and go rowing on the lake. A range of bicycles, including tandem bikes, children’s bikes and bikes with side cars for small children are available for rental. The park’s paved pathways are ideal for gentle rides and walks. The park serves as a scenic venue for walking and photography. During the rainy season—generally June to September—the park is often shrouded in fog and takes on a misty atmosphere. Flowers bloom in abundance following the end of the rainy season.
BenCab Museum
Paintings and Sculpture of Benedicto Cabrera
The BenCab Museum is on Km. 6 Asin Road, a brief 15-minute drive from the center of Baguio City. Built on a promontory, the museum commands a breathtaking view of the adjacent garden, farm, hill and mini-forest, the surrounding mountains, and the South China sea in the distant west. With its vision of bringing arts closer to the people, the museum houses the artist’s collections of his own works, as well as those of acknowledged Filipino masters and rising contemporary artists. The granary gods, lime containers, native implements, weapons and other outstanding examples of indigenous arts and crafts of the Cordilleras are also highlighted.
The Bencab Museum is committed to the promotion of the arts, and the preservation, conservation and protection of the environment, as well as the culture and traditions of the Cordilleras, as an expression of the artist’s gratitude to the country that nurtured and inspired an artistic career that continues to grow, mature and fascinate.
Tam-Awan Village
Tam-Awan Village (Ctto)
Tam-awan Village in Pinsao Proper, Baguio City uniquely blends indigenous aesthetics and exquisite Cordilleran craftsmanship with an artist’s concept for a village adapting to Baguio setting. A popular hang-out for Baguio’s artists is Tam-awan Village. Located about 20 minutes from downtown Baguio, it’s home to artworks that showcase Cordilleran culture. Modeled after a tribal village, it features several galleries that house works of art from both local and visiting artists. It also has its own cafe where you can sample authentic Cordilleran cooking.
Strawberry Farm

Strawberry Ice Cream
The Strawberry Farm is located in the nearby town of La Trinidad, Benguet, about less than 10 kms away or 30 minutes travel time from the center of Baguio. The strawberry picking season is from November to May. The Strawberry Farm also produces other fruits and vegetables, but most people just go to pick strawberries. They say that this farm has the best sunset view in La Trinidad Valley.
Lourdes Grotto
Lourdes Grotto at Dominican, Hills Baguio.
Lourdes Grotto is a Catholic shrine and place of meditation in Baguio. It is located on a high hill in the western part of the city where visitors will find the image of the Lady of Lourdes. The grotto is a favorite pilgrimage site during Holy Week most especially during Holy Thursday and Good Friday. Access to the top of the grotto could be made by climbing its 252-step staircase or by driving a light vehicle through a winding and steep paved road.
Botanical Garden
Botanical Garden
The Botanical Garden is located  just 1 kilometer from Session Road, along beautiful Leonard Wood between Teachers Camp and Wright Park. You will be welcomed by a bas relief sculpture made of cement and stone depicting the different rituals of the Cordillera tribes, with real live Igorots who will be more than willing to pose for photos for a small fee. Filled with towering pine trees, the Botanical Garden serves the dual purpose of providing visitors and residents valuable beathing space and re-greening a fast developing city with greenhouses and nurseries designed to propagate the flora and fauna species that will eventually find their way to parks and gardens around the Summer Capital.
The Mansion
The Mansion
History of The Mansion House
The Mansion is the official summer residence of the President of the Philippines. It is located on the eastern part of the city along C.P. Romulo Drive (formerly a part of Leonard Wood Road) and right across from Wright Park. Older than the city itself, the Mansion is easily one of the most visited and photographed landmarks of Baguio. Inside the Mansion is a mini museum housing memorabilia and works of art collected over its years of occupancy by the former presidents. Within the compound and adjacent to the Mansion is a two-story building which serves as the official residence of the Philippine President in Baguio City and nearby is a small amphitheater. A contingent of Philippine marines maintains the security of this large compound and you will see a some of them manning the guardhouse at the vicinity of the gate. This is the official Residence of the President of the Philippines, here in Baguio City. Location wise, it can be easily found on the eastern side of the city, along the Carlos Pena Romulo Drive; and just right across the Wright Park. Also, the Mansion in the highly-urbanized city of Baguio; is one of the most frequently photographed landmarks in Pines City. Inside the premises of “The Mansion” is a mini museum which takes care of the memorabilia and  other historical works of art;  which had been collected over the years  during the incumbency of a particular Philippine president. Likewise, within the compound which is so close to this particular tourist spot; is a grandiose two-storey building which is nonetheless, the official residence of the Philippines’ Chief Executive. Nearby, the entourage of the First family can have fun together while watching historical films in a small but technologically-advanced amphitheatre.   In the colorful pages of Philippine history, “The Mansion” had served as the “Seat of the Second Session of the Economic Commission of Asia and the Far East.
Mines View Park
Mines View Park
The view in Mines View Park
With Doglas
Baguio City started out as an American mining town in the early 20th Century, and one of its lasting attractions is Mines View Park. A ridge located at the extreme northeast side of the city, past The Mansion and Wright Park, Mines View Park boasts of a spectacular view of Benguet's gold and copper mines and the Cordillera mountains.
The main attractions in Mines View Park nowadays would be the commercial activities such as the souvenir and silverworks stores by the park. The one especially worth visiting is Rimando's, that offers the best carved artifacts, on the Gibraltar side.
Tourists also have a chance to get dressed in full Cordillera regalia -- bahag, shield and spear for the men, tapis for the ladies, vests and headdresses for both.
Good Shepherd
In Front of Good Shepherd (ctto)
Pasalubongs in Good Shepherd (ctto)
Good Shepherd Baguio is the most famous souvenir shop in Baguio. Good Shepherd has been operating since 1952 and, since then, a lot of tourists have come here not only to check out the beautiful sights but also to buy their Strawberry Jam (Php 190/8oz) and Ube Jam (Php 210/12oz). One can buy strawberry and ube jams, peanut and cashew brittle and other goodies. They also have a very nice view deck with the vista of the mountains of the Cordillera range as a backdrop for photos.
Wright Park
Wright Park
Wright Park is named after its architect Governor Luke E. Wright who ordered architect Daniel Burnham to build the place with recreational facility for American soldiers and civilian. Being one of the many scenic parks in Baguio City, Wright Park is absolutely the right place you need to visit after seeing The Mansion which is just fronting the place. It is located at the eastern part of the city and fronting the main gate of the Mansion. Its main features are a shallow elongated rectangular body of water known as the “Pool of Pines” and the park circle which is on one end of the park. Postcard-type photographs are usually taken at both ends of Wright Park. Bringing your camera would absolutely be perfect to complete your adventure experience.
At the both sides of the access road beside the pool, are tall pine trees and decorative street lights line. If you are fortunate enough, you can met and greet some Igorots dressed in their native attire and regalia who are willing to pose for a photograph. However, they ask for low cost fee. You can also buy native handicrafts sold at the end part of the Mansion made by few Igorot traders. From the park circle is a walkway which leads to a wide stairway made of stones that descend to an area where ponies are rented out. What is being looked forward by many tourists is riding a pony that is a longtime favorite among children and even adults. The place is not boring and usually crowded during sunny weekends and on holidays. You can rent some ponies and taken farther out along South Drive, the Mines View Park area or to Outlook Drive with accompaniment. There are 200 ponies available for tourists so that everyone will accommodate.
Diplomat Hotel
Fountain inside the Diplomat Hotel
In front of Diplomat Hotel
The former Diplomat Hotel in Baguio City, Philippines sits on top of the Dominican Hill. It used to be a rest house and a seminary way back 1911 before it was developed into a school and eventually, a hotel. Almost every tourist that goes to Baguio makes it a point to visit this place because in spite of the ruins, it remained as one of the most panoramic and picturesque spots in the City of Pines.
During the World War II, numerous nuns and priests were beheaded here. This is believed to be the reason why headless apparitions can often be seen during the night inside the hotel. The employees and guests also claimed that they would often hear strange sounds coming from the building. Crying coming from kids and babies became a common noise, which can be attributed to the massacre of numerous children done at the fountain. The Dominican Hill Retreat House, also commonly known as the Diplomat Hotel, is an abandoned structure atop Dominican Hill, Baguio, Philippines. It is now undergoing rehabilitation through the efforts of the city government. The whole property on which it stands has been renamed as the Dominican Heritage Hill and Nature Park. A panoramic view of the city unfolds from its vantage point, the stone crucifix on the outdoor patio of the hotel's second floor.
