Renting Sucks

Have you ever rented a basement apartment and all you hear is the stomping and the furniture moving? Well if your answer is yes, then me too, I feel like i have 15 college football players living above me. Funny enough it is just 2 brothers -.- and they do not have a sense of time at all, I sleep at 12am and wake up at around 8 am, which is the only hours of peace and quiet I get. The first thing i hear when i wake up until i go to bed is the 2 brothers above me stomping and moving, I really do try to ignore it but how can I when it literally sounds like I have 15 college football players shuffling above me. My boyfriend whom I live with, tries to reason with me and tells me to ignore the noice (which he can clearly do cause he has fricken a full set of gaming head gear on where god only knows that he can barely hear me talking to him through that ginormous thing, so how can he hear the damn stomping and movement), but come on, I need some peace and quiet (especially during this time of quarantine) and do not need to feel like my head is about to explode! God I hate renting a basement apartment. Cannot wait until i move at the end of this month

Random Ramblings #3: “Landlords are Psychotic”

The super-awesome TruTV program, Adam Ruins Everything, brought up several good reasons to rent, rather than own, a home. As someone who lived in a money pit for about 10 years, he was spot on as far as expensive maintenance and lack of mobility.

However, one big, HUGE issue with renting is the rent increase that comes up at the end of each term. Any reasonable landlord would want to keep a reliable tenant by any means possible, in order to avoid the cost of tenant turnover -- marketing, making the house move-in ready, and, of course - finding a new tenant to move in as soon as possible - which resonates with cheaper ‘teaser’ rents that are often lower than a current tenant is currently paying.

My wife and I found a decent property through American Homes 4 Rent, a multi-billion-dollar racket based out of Las Vegas. It’s been a decent experience - 2-story, quiet neighborhood, etc... but the rent increases have been killer:

Year 1 (Move in): $1550 Year 2 (Increased): $1630 Year 3 (Increased): $1703 Year 4 (Increased): $1795

Altogether, these increases have amounted to a decent car payment! Why? Property values have remained stable, and similar properties have remained near the $1500-$1600 range. Expressing my disgust caused a AH4R rep to negotiate down by $20. $1775. From $1795. Laughable.

So rather than reach a reasonable amount, say $1650 or so, they would rather pay the expenses to make it move-in ready, seek out a new tenant (and deal with the timeframe), and risk vacancy. How is this not a business fail? I’m sure they will also starting rent at a similar amount we started with as well (sucker bid).

So, with all due respect to Adam (and I have a lot for his fact-checking skills), I’m not really biting on this rent > buy equation. So long as your house isn’t so old that the termites are about to eat it for dinner, it’s probably still a better idea to buy at all costs (and they are a LOT!)

My life is crumbling...

Received some world shattering news yesterday. My landlord is selling my house. Out of nowhere. We have a month and half to get out. Walked Bug to the bus stop this morning and cried. Every other time we’ve moved it’s because we wanted to; IE: bigger house, closer to town. But now, thru no fault of our own, we’re being forced out of our home that we’ve made our own over the last year. Out of our neighborhood that we’ve become established in. How do I explain this to my boys? My heart is shattered. We really thought we found our forever home...
