Yule Be Caught; Under Bright Boughs {TRC//Fic Advent: Day 1}

((Officially, Happy Holidays! I’m going to do my best to post every day up until the 25th. A few longer fics, maybe a couple drabbles, maybe even some smut. Who knows. I wanted to be farther ahead in my plans by now but WHOOPS pantsing merrily all the way per usual.))

Things were supposed to have calmed down--Adam was supposed to have calmed down. All of him. All of this. But any party at Fox Way, Yule especially, was bound to cause some sort of chaos. He’s not even sure it’s technically his fault. (Theme: Mistletoe)

Adam was used to Fox Way being an ever-revolving whirlwind of aunts, cousins, and various pets that shouldn’t be. But this… whatever this gathering was supposed to be, was just excessive.

“Fuck me,” Ronan hissed, jamming his hands into his jacket pockets. It was already unbuttoned and disheveled, a scotch stain at the corner of his lapel. “I’m gonna kill that little vole.”

Adam scratched at the side of his neck, skin crawling under some invisible presence. It’d been bothering him for the last hour. Probably allergic to rubbing elbows with all of Richard Gansey the Senior’s guests. 

“Don’t start a fight, please,” Gansey begged.

“Yeah,” Adam added, “Calla will break you in half.”

“Like to see her try,” Ronan said. And knowing Ronan, he’d probably prefer that to their halting progress through cackling laughter, sticky drinks being jostled, and a thousand homemade shawls covered in a thousand different perfumes.

“Blue!” Gansey cried in delight.

Adam couldn’t see her yet, but that was normal. He’d find her eventually. They weaved through elbows and clouds of hair, and found themselves in the big kitchen filled with crock-pots and trays and crystal bowls of various chilled and steaming liquids. Some of them somehow both.

“There’s the riffraff,” said a throaty voice.

Orla: curls like a halo and dripping in metallic gold fabrics, so much bronzed skin out and criss-crossed in endless looping chains of jewelry. He swallowed, eyes flickering down and then back up faster. Scratched at his neck.

He was sure the gold meant something, but he wasn’t inclined to find out.

“Hello Orla, happy holidays,” Gansey said, hand out for a shake.

Orla simply gripped the tips of his fingers, smiling when he took the hint and kissed the back of her hand. “A Happy Yule to you. And you, pet.”

Ronan bared his teeth.

Adam pushed them both past her, but was stopped himself with a long-nailed finger tracing down his neck to his shoulder.

“Hmm,” she said.

He batted her hand away, shoulder jacking up. Scratched at the tickle she’d left.

“You’re late,” Blue said.

“The silent auction ran long,” Gansey said. “Forgive me?”

“Never.” She still handed him a cup of something steaming. Glanced at his side, face scrunching in horror. “What’s that?”

“Presents.” Gansey brightened, lifting the bag bulging with soft wrapped packages, all mostly the same shape. Gansey had been awfully pleased with himself—and uncharacteristically tight lipped—about it for days.

“I don’t want your charity. Take it back to Tiffany’s.”

“It’s not from Tiffany’s. That’s jewelry, nothing would be in a package this large. Well, unless you were Orla, I suppose. I’m just she could find—”

Blue huffed a laugh, flicking his nose. “I know what Tiffany’s is.”

“Please don’t be mad,” Gansey begged, already desperately out of his depth.

Adam smiled, relaxing some. There were still too many people and too many twinkling lights, but his friends made their own bubble, and he breathed a little easier to melt into the crowds. And the banter was normal; softer than whatever Ronan always did in the BMW after a Gansey Event, knuckles white on the steering wheel and Gansey disapproving in the passenger seat. Even if they weren’t fighting, it was an uncomfortable familiarity to sit in the back under the passing lights, both seventeen and seven at once, the same dreadful anticipation curdling in his throat.

“Can I have some?”

Adam jumped, torn from his thoughts by both the voice and the cold hand to his wrist. Noah, whole and bright, and staring beseeching at the napkin-wrapped mini pie of some sort in his hand. He didn’t remember picking it up; didn’t remember being handed it either. That was the magic of Fox Way, hundreds of women like generators, and a house humming heavy with domestic energy that tugged his mind into complacency.

He took a bite of the pie.

“It’s spiced fruit and nuts,” Adam told him. Admittedly, very good. He wondered who had made it. “You can’t eat.”

Noah pouted, looking forlorn between him and pie. And then leaned in to press their lips together.

A tongue, decidedly tangible and cold, swiped into his mouth and muffled his embarrassing noise of surprise.  

“The fuck?” Ronan snapped.

Dazed, Adam could only kiss back, something in his tired brain shorting and misfiring and only responding to warmth, to tongue, to want.

“Oh,” Noah sighed, pulling back and licking his lips, watching Adam’s with pupils too dark and wide. “Oh, that’s delicious, you’re right.”

“Huh?” Adam said, with all of his 4.0 grades.

“I’m getting better at borrowing energy,” Noah said, still staring at Adam’s mouth. “Borrowing senses from living.”

Adam’s heart tripped and ratcheted faster, feeling cornered and with it that inescapable hunger he tried to shove back down with the old and calloused grief at Noah’s fate.

“He’s getting very good at it,” Blue said proudly, but even she was staring at Adam’s mouth. Or maybe something below it. “We’ve been practicing.”

Gansey whined—terribly betrayed and pathetic about it—and was ignored.

4. what never fails to make you smile/happy? Chatting with my friends online - you know who you are! 

5. how are you doing with all that’s going on in the world (virus, having to do social distancing, etc)? Turns out this is kinda the way I live my life on a regular basis... all of my BEST friends are online friends... And I’m never more happy than when I’m snuggly in my office writing something. So... I’ve actually been pretty ok. I get frustrated with people who just won’t LISTEN... like the guys are work who were all talking about going out and getting tanked on St Patrick’s Day... I just wish people understood. But generally I’m ok.

6. we all love new music to listen to, name an artist that is underrated/you think people should check out? The Zolas - AAAAHHHH I LOVE THEM - Also repping Canadian content... but I love them SOOO much... they are my current favourite band, which is saying a lot considering they took the crown from the Foo Fighters. Just LISTEN to Escape Artist and tell me it doesn’t speak to your SOUL!!!

7. tv show or movie? TV Show - I love getting attached to the characters and following them through long term development.

8. favourite holiday? Christmas - there’s just something about the season... and this little bright light of happiness in the darkest of seasons.

9. a song that describes you? Honestly the song that makes me think MOST of my mental state and where I’m at right now.. is a song from my teen years: The Middle by Jimmy Eat World - whenever I hear that song I think he’s speaking directly to me EVERY TIME... and it wasn’t as meaningful when I was a teen, but it gets me now... every time.

1. What is your favorite hobby? Writing

2. What is your favorite book? Or/and a really good book you’ve read recently? The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stievfater has quickly climbed to the top of my extensive list of favourite books. I love the characters soo much, and her writing is just so lyrical and poetic and amazing. Specifically The Dream Thieves is my favourite book in the series... because it’s Ronan’s book... and I feel like that reckless, careless boy has a place in all of us.

3. What is your favorite Ship that will never happen (Or hasn’t happened yet)? DUDE!!! McDanno should have happened. 100% McDanno should be canon... the queerbaiting is OUT OF THIS WORLD insane... and I just.. can’t... Probably number 2 is Sterek... and the reason that one hurts so much is just because the actors fully endorsed it in that stupid TV Guide video... “Sterek all the way.”... and I just... that hurts.

4. If you could spend the day with any living celebrity, who would it be? Dave Grohl. I love him. And I think it would be a fucking BLAST to hang out with him.

5. The best worst movie you’ve ever seen. A movie that you know objectively is trash but you can’t help but really enjoy it. Centre Stage... I will watch that movie on repeat until the day I die. The acting in it is atrocious... the writing even worse... and yet... yet...

1. If/when you read, do you prefer an eReader or an actual physical book? Physical book - I find with an ereader that there are too few words per page... and constantly flipping pages at the speed I read it.. distracting to me. That might sound like a weird reason... but it pulls me out of the story and I can’t stand for that.

2. Favorite movie? A River Runs Through It. I love it so much. We just rewatched it the other day and when... *gets choked up* Robert Redford delivered the last line at the end... I just... *gets more choked up* I cried my face off... tears streaming down my face... It is. SOOOO GOOOD.

3. What does a normal day look for you? Get up, walk dogs, go to work, daydream while doing my mundane job (that I actually really enjoy because I’m good at it and it makes me proud), come home and write, sleep and then wake up to do it all over again.

the first annual “movies” awards

everyone’s doing their fake oscars, so why shouldn’t i do mine?

there will be five nominations per category, based exclusively on whether or not i liked it or not. my experience in film criticism is copy-editing film reviews for a major media group, but i also have terrible taste. if you are mad at me, it is just because you are angry.

thank you. let’s begin.

best ensemble: -knives out -the farewell -booksmart -hustlers and the winner.... parasite! fucking obviously. the film is a well-oiled machine, with its cast working together to shine a massive spotlight on each others’ performances. the chemistry, the dedication, and the choreography of it all. brilliant, show-stopping, etcetera.

best supporting actor: -willem dafoe, the lighthouse -brad pitt, once upon a time... in hollywood (i’m sorry! it was a good performance!) -song kang-ho, parasite -daniel craig, knives out and the winner... tom hanks, a beautiful day in the neighborhood! i am one of those people who cries at videos about fred rogers on the reg. tom hanks is an actor i have actively tried to dislike, but i’m completely unable to do it! this performance was like a warm hug, and sometimes, that’s what you need from a performance.

best supporting actress: -jennifer lopez, hustlers -zhao shuzhen, the farewell -laura dern, she just had a good year and i like her even if i didn’t like marriage story at all and i thought her work in little women didn’t stand out among the rest -margot robbie, same as ms. dern and the winner... florence pugh, little women! she managed to convincingly portray a 13 year old despite being florence pugh, which is a fucking miracle. i want to see her doing more comedy!!! her delivery as amy was delightful, and she succeeded where one of her co-stars, who i will not name in this post, failed, in playing a complex young woman with a great deal of internalized misogyny in a way that is real, relatable, and interesting. i also just fucking loved little women, is the thing. please break up with zach braff.

best director: -greta gerwig, little women -pedro almodóvar, pain & glory -sam mendes, 1917 -taika waititi, jojo rabbit and the winner... bong joon-ho, parasite! this feels like a given, tbh. parasite is a fucking masterpiece, and it’s so artfully and passionately crafted that it kills me. again, well-oiled machine.

best adapted screenplay: -hustlers, lorene scafaria -the lighthouse, max & robert eggers -the irishman, steven zaillian -a beautiful day in the neighborhood, micah fitzerman-blue & noah harpster -and the winner... greta gerwig, little women! listen. listen. ten year-old me kinned jo marsh. gerwig made a perfect adaptation of the book--changing and transforming as needed, and just. i fucking love that the heterosexuality-ever-after is presented as comedic and fake and stupid. it made me happy, and it made me want to reread the book. thanks.

best original screenplay: -parasite, bong joon-ho & han jin-won -the last black man in san francisco, joe talbot & rob richert -portrait of a lady on fire, céline sciamma -the farewell, lulu wang and the winner... knives out, rian johnson! i did not go into knives out expecting to love it. i knew i’d like it, of course--i love a good whodunnit, the cast is spectacular, all that, but as much as i love brick, both looper and tlj were not really for me, so i wasn’t really sure about how johnson’s work would vibe with me in 2020. anyway. i was so pleasantly surprised. the script is so sharp and pointed and fucking funny, and it made me want to play along with the mystery, so fuck yeah.

the oscar isaac award for making me remember that men can be attractive: -idris elba, hobbs & shaw (dq’d because cats happened, and i think it scarred me -richard madden, rocketman -jake gyllenhal, spiderman: far from home -lakeith stanfield, knives out and the winner... winston duke, us, because he’s very handsome and i think he has a charming personality.

best lead actor: -jimmie fails, the last black man in san francisco -eddie murphy, dolemite is my name -it is with great pain that i must say this, adam sandler, uncut gems -antonio banderas, pain & glory and the winner... taron egerton, rocketman, another movie i did not expect to love at all. but egerton’s performance makes it! it really does. much like the largely indistinguishable from him ansel elgort in baby driver, he managed to make me overcome my extreme dislike of him so as to deliver a charming, tragic performance. good job, taron.

best lead actress: -saoirse ronan, little women -alfre woodaard, clemency -renée zellweger, judy -elisabeth moss please leave scientology, her smell and the winner... lupita n’yongo, us! which, uh, duh. fucking horror performance of the century. maybe of eternity. i had nightmares for a solid week, and horror movies aren’t usually nightmare fuel for me. she manages to play unhinged masterfully while still serving as a grounding force, and it’s just magical. god. this performance was great, we have no choice but to stan, etc.

oh all kinds of places. i want to go to antartica and the himalayas and the andes and the atacama desert and colorado and the sierras and all america’s national parks and tons of places in europe and mongolia and so many other places

at the end of the day i like decompressing in my room and i also really love my art classes!
