Damn man they take out all the stops with the action scenes in this remake.
Tumblr media
The Han’ya and Kenshin fight was awesome. Love the rotating camera angles during the fight. Han’ya’s “returning the children” backstory was also horrific. As Kenshin said, you’d think someone like that would understand what Megumi’s been through and try to help not just enable the situation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The sound design during the Sano and Shikijo fight was crazy! Those punches and headbutts had so much force behind them and you could really feel them with each blow. Sano’s speech gave me chills, then breaking Shikijo’s hands and knocking him out.. chef’s kiss, what a fight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So far throughout the two battles with Oniwaban members, you really get the sense they aren’t bad, just misguided and as Sano said, blinded by their own strength. They should be using it to help people, not make things worse.
Kenshin and Aoshi next week, so hype! As usual the remake is delivering very well.

Aoshi v Kenshin was epic as you’d expect. Both men putting their heart and soul into each strike. Kenshin gripping the blade of his sword with his bare hands throughout the fight made my hand hurt lol. I know that had to be painful.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Animation and choreography both really well done. Just like the Sano Shikijo fight last week, you could really feel the weight of each blow. Almost as if they were the physical manifestation of their wills.
Tumblr media
This mf Kanryu had to go and ruin it by pulling up with a goddamn gattling gun of all things. Paying off that post credits engrish scene a few weeks ago. RIP Shikijo, real one for protecting Aoshi. Real sense of camaraderie among the whole Oniwaban group. Aoshi didn’t abandon his comrades when he could’ve become an officer and they didn’t abandon him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Great episode can’t wait for the start of the second cour.

Another fire ruroni episode, we’re about to be in for some true peak over the next few weeks 🙏🏾
As usual Kaoru main priority is making sure Megumi doesn’t steal her man 😂 maybe learn to cook Ohagi as well as Megumi does and you won’t have to worry about it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even though the gang accepted Megumi and is willing to help her move forward with her life, it’s understandable that she would still have doubts about whether or not she deserves that redemption. No shock that Kanryū was able to play on her fears and get her to come back.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sano being reluctant to help also makes sense. He went along with things for the past few weeks because Kanryū’s gang launched a direct attack on them. But as far as going after Megumi who willingly walked away I can understand that after losing a friend to the opium crisis, he’s not so inclined to help. It’s one thing to know about people in town dying vs actually knowing friends that have died. Makes it way more personal. In the end, a little talk no jutsu got him to do the right thing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Megumi willing to go on a suicide mission is commendable. She knew she wasn’t coming out of that mansion and was willing to take Kanryu down with her. Im actually more surprised that he didn’t expect a potential assassination attempt. He must’ve thought he had her completely broken. A testament to the impact that Kenshin and the rest have had on her in such a short time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of Kenshin, damn, he’s not playing around. Cutting down and throwing a lamp post, giving a firm hour deadline to release Megumi etc. The murderous intent was so palpable from his eyes. can’t wait to see him take on this mansion gauntlet. That ending was chills.

Second cour is here! OP didn’t do much for me. Song might grow on me, but seems a little underwhelming compared to the first cour.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The ED on the other hand is by Kid Phenomenon from Exile who are one of my fave Jpop groups rn. Love their song “wheelie”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Felt like a proud big brother watching Yahiko do his thing in this episode. Only way he’s going to grow up and become his own person is by making decisions like he did today, helping people, pushing himself beyond his limits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like that Kaoru, Kenshin and Sano gave him enough space to operate on his own, but also couldn’t help but look out for him in the end lol. They’re all so protective and I love how much of a family they have become.
Tumblr media
He claimed it was to buy a Sakabato, but there’s definitely a little more to it than that lol. I think he’s a little sweet on the young lady. That’s always a good motivation to get stronger as well.

That Gatling soliloquy from Kanryu was so disturbing lmao. Fuck him though, fr. RIP Shikijo and the rest of the Oniwaban members. Loyal to the end and the best brothers in arms you could hope for.
Tumblr media
The story does a good job of showing how what’s good and bad is really just a matter of perspective. When we first saw the Oniwaban members it was like a clear cut case that these were bad guys and they needed to be taken out. But through these battles and flashbacks we’ve learnt there’s more to them than meets the eye. Just a group of people who have lost their families and purpose coming together to survive. Very similar to Kenshin and his group.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I particularly liked the flashback to the training exercise where Aoshi tells Han’ya that he was smiling. Small statement, but it had a profound impact on him. Aoshi didn’t see Han’ya as a deformed freak, but as a regular friend and comrade. Just that statement restored a semblance of normalcy to him after a long time. It’s no wonder he was willing to sacrifice himself.
Tumblr media
In the end Kanryu got off too easy imo for all the pain and suffering he caused not just with the Oniwaban, but those who were ruined by the opium trade.
Tumblr media
I love Kenshin preventing Megumi from telling on herself. If anyone deserves another chance it’s her. She’ll make a great doctor and save lives. That’s the true way to make amends. That whole dialogue is what makes Kenshin such a great character.
Tumblr media
And a great ending to the episode. Nice seeing everyone share one last meal together before Megumi heads off. She’s still not had enough of teasing Kaoru 😂 “if you ever get tired of Kaoru, I’ll be your companion” too bad Kenshin is too dense to get it lmao.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Onto the next arc and the second cour. So hype.

Excellent conclusion to the flashback arc.
Tumblr media
As I thought, Dr. Elder was hiding her gender due to fear of not getting taken seriously. Really felt bad for her when she talked about how people would take the nurses and assistants more seriously than her even though she’s a doctor.
Tumblr media
A literal east vs west battle between the last samurai of Japan and the last knight of Europe, pretty cool showdown and the contrasting styles were awesome. That spiral attack where bro contorted his entire body was insane. In the end, of course Kenshin came out on top, but the lengths that the old man would go to get dr. Elder out of “his turf”.. using a biological weapon is crazy. Good thing they were able to stop him before he unleashed smallpox.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the end, espiral and Kenshin are both the last of a dying breed and were able to find common ground. Epsiral going to America with Dr.Elder seemed like a pretty convenient plot point lol, but I guess given people’s skepticism towards women in medicine you can never have enough security.

Bonus manga chapters were adopted very well and I think they set up the Kyoto arc well. Hype

Need the Kyoto arc 2nd season announced asap. Just do the whole manga at this point. Amazing finale and what a first season of this reboot.
Tumblr media
Always difficult to do another take on such a beloved series but the studio did it justice and yea ,while there’s some changes to the tone, it’s still the same story and characters we know and love combined with modern production values.
RIP Okubo. The last decent man in the Meiji government. IRL he was also assassinated, by a former rebel army member. In the anime, I like that even as he was about to be killed his final thoughts were about his country and making sure the sacrifices that everyone made to ensure the Japanese people could decide their future didn’t go to waste. A true patriot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After learning about an old friend’s brutal murder there was no way Kenshin could sit back and just enjoy these newfound peaceful days. Shishio and his army have shown themselves to be extremely dangerous, able to penetrate even the highest levels of the government, assassinate and sew discord throughout the nation. Someone has to take him out and there’s only one man for that job.
Kenshin and Kaoru’s farewell was really heartbreaking too. Could definitely feel that it was one of those situations where you’re so sad and shocked that you just can’t say anything for Kaoru. She was absolutely devastated to see Kenshin go 😢. He’d just started fully settling in and embracing his new home, but after fighting so hard for so many years to bring about change, no way he could just let Shishio do whatever he wants. Plus that nagging feeling of the Battosai persona still being within him…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall loved this so much, brought back so many memories of being a kid and watching anime on toonami
Can not wait until next season. Hopefully they adapt the entirety of the manga this time around. I know it’s not doing super well domestically rn, but hopefully it’s enough to warrant a full adaptation.

These 5 minute episodes gotta stop 😂 no way that was 24 minutes lol.
Tumblr media
Hyottoko fight was awesome. Not even going to begin to wonder the logistics of putting a bag of flammable material in your stomach like that lol. Seeing Kenshin firebend was awesome as well. Megumi thought our guy was a regular swordsman. She better ask around town or something lol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shoutout to Yahiko for taking that poison bullet for Megumi. Being around Kenshin and Sanosuke has really paid off for him. That could’ve easily been his death had Megumi not been medically trained.
Tumblr media
Speaking of Megumi, with that backstory it’s no wonder she acted the way she did. Losing her family and loved ones and then the doctor she was working with. Being made to make drugs that are destroying the community. That would make anyone lose faith in humanity. Seeing Kenshin and everyone’s camaraderie really changed her outlook on things.
Tumblr media
Love how Kaouru first concern is making sure Megumi don’t make a move on Kenshin tho 😂
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Things are gonna get serious now that shinomori knows who Kenshin is for sure. That post credits scene Engrish was also hilarious . Pretty sure that was anime original.

Whew another awesome episode. Start of a new arc and this one is going to present some unique challenges.
Kenshin and the gang are outnumbered and going up against someone with a lot of money, enough to have his own private army. This is tough. Not to mention the opium that’s flooding the streets and ruining peoples lives. This gave me a little nostalgia for Revenger from earlier in the year which touched on drug abuse during a similar era.
It’s kinda sad seeing how the more things change, the more they stay the same. Drug abuse was a big issue back then and it continues to be a plague on society.
Liked the introduction of megumi who while seemingly playing both sides, seems like she’s really a good person at heart. Love how jealous Kaoru got because of Megumi and Kenshin’s interactions 😂 she’s entering her overbearing and insecure stage which is always cute to see.
An army of shinobi vs one rurouni, who wins? Can’t wait to see how things play out in this new take on the classic arc.

Man seeing Rajuta beat up the master like that was rough. The disrespect shown towards he and the dojo was wild. Walking in with sandals, almost killing the master and then threatening to burn the sign.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s always interesting to see the contrast between Kenshin and these other former warrior types who just can’t let the past go. When your entire existence has been based on fighting wars and killing, where do you go after that’s done? Kenshin has found purpose as a protector, others are struggling to readjust though. Still Raijuta needs to be stopped.
