Heatstroke Sucks
During the first race of my senior year it was 98 degrees outside and the officials had been on the edge of calling the meet off before deciding to have us run. I had been drinking water and Gatorade throughout the day, but as soon as I started running I knew something was wrong.
I don't remember much of it except for how dizzy I was and how disorientated I felt. I couldn't get my breathing right. I found out the next morning from some of the runners behind me that I had started to sway near the 1st mile mark and had started to vomit up water, but had kept on running. Once, twice, three times I vomited up water, but it was after the third time I collapsed and had started to shake in a way that reminded one girl of a seizure.
Three adults from different teams came to my side, two staying with me while the third ran to tell my coach that I was down. I remember coming to and hearing their voices, asking me for my name, age, and what school I went to. Apparently all I could say during that time was K-State, which made my coach happy because he loved K-State and had gone there.
The two of them dragged me into the shade of a tree, feeling my forehead and looking into my eyes as well as fanning me. Finally, one of my team mates mother, who was a science teacher at my school, drove in her minivan with another mother, who was a nurse, on the road nearby and the two adults carried me to them. The nurse felt my pulse while asking the two adults what they had saw. My team mates mother put wet washcloths on me and placed ice packs under my armpits, placing a wet towel over me and making me drink cool Gatorade and water.
Finally everyone got into the minivan and started driving back to the tent area when I noticed a figure jogging across the course. It was my mother, and she confronted the two other adults before jogging back towards the tents. My team mates mom drove us directly to my schools tent and we were greeted by my schools athletic trainer who immediately started checking my pulse and checking to see if I was sweating and that my skin wasn't dry.
The nurse answered most of his questions, for the most part all I could do was look at my teammates, who were all craning their necks to stare at me. If I hadn't been so out of it and confused, I probably would of been embarrassed. I found out later that the third adult had ran up to our tent and had asked where our coach was because one of his runners collapsed, and when a girl who usually finished after me crossed the finish line they knew that it had been me.
When my mom appeared I started to become more aware of everything as she spoke to the athletic trainer and the nurse. My mom disappeared again to get the explorer while someone was sent to get my things. When my mom drove up I was carried into my moms explorer and we drove off. Now, while you're suppose to get someone who's had heatstroke medical attention, my mom decided that I didn't really need it. So, she took me back to her work because she had gone on break to watch me run, sitting me down in front of a fan and giving me six Gatorade's that she wanted me to drink while she called my dad to pick me up.
I was finally able to walk steadily when my dad arrived, and while he asked if I needed to see a doctor I was tired and just wanted to go home.
And that was my adventure with heatstroke and boy did it suck.
