i think he finds humanity's adoration of halloween very endearing. before olive can convince him to celebrate, though, he insists that he explains the holiday's origins, what samhain is, and a bunch of little fun facts like how turnips were the original jack'o'lanterns. he will also happily eat candy and watch horror movies with her, but dressing up depends on the incarnation!!

he insists that he doesnt wanna dress up..... you might get him to wear some silly glasses or something, though

he initially says no, but olive eventually convinces him to go shopping with her and he falls in love with some regal vampire outfit. three will pretend like he's only getting it for her but actually loves it and flaunts around all day

you dont even have to ask. he originally wants to be over the top with a handmade mask, an intricate outfit, and some props, but he gets distracted and almost forgets halloween entirely. olive ends up making him some little ears and draws a nose on him so that he can be a bear. its a little last minute, but the tardis comes in clutch with a brown sweater and corduroy pants!!

he says he doesn't want to dress up but he also can't say no to olive. as to not push him too far, she draws a lil nose on him again and gives him some ears and a tail so that he can achieve full, golden retriever energy. he is embarrassed.

he gives olive a firm 'no'. peri tries to tease him into dressing up by talking about how dreadful his usual outfit his, but he ends up just sulking into olive's side for the rest of the night. if anyone asks, hes joseph in the technicolor dreamcoat

he considers it and acts like his answer is no, but he secretly goes off and finds the absolute goofiest costume he can find. like, this man would show up to olives door dressed as buttercup with ace in a bubbles costume. it doesnt matter if she already had an outfit planned because olive has to be blossom ofc!!

he is sappy and wants couples costumes; even if they aren't planning on going out. after going through the tardis' wardrobe, they eventually settle on mr darcy and elizabeth bennet

he says no, but olive gently coaxes him into the idea as long as the costume isn't too overbearing. they end up adding a bandana and sunglasses to his usual look so that he can be a biker :)

oh he was planning on it. but, as excited as he was to dress up, it takes them the whole month to figure out what to go as. through the use of the internet, they eventually decide to be tuxedo mask and sailor moon (even though olive doesnt know anything about the show/manga)

he is so excited to dress up as something cool and scary but, as soon as they walk into the store, he is enraptured by the countless onesies and insists on choosing one of them. he loves that they can be a costume and pajamas!! olive chooses a silly lil monkey onesie for him and he picks a bunny onesie for her

'i dont wanna dress up' shhh. yes you do. clara and olive manage to get him to wear a ghostbusters uniform and, after spending a good amount of time trying to boost his confidence and inflate his ego, the other two decide to be some kind of ghost or ghoul.

oh my god. she insists on it. the whole fam has to get into it, too, and she spends so long trying to search for group costumes. eventually, they settle on horror icons!! the doctor dresses up as freddy krueger, olive is annabelle, yaz chose chucky, graham is jason, dan is forced to be michael myers, and ryan is secretly excited to be ghostface. the doctor also demands that they try to be 'in character' as they go trick or treating

i read this whole thing! a few takeaways:

was developed for tv by the westworld show creators; the showrunners wrote for captain marvel, tomb raider, portlandia, the office, silicon valley, and baskets

one of the leads, lucy (ella purnell) from vault 33, is naive and "doe-eyed" and left the vault for a rescue mission

the other leads will be a brotherhood of steel squire (aaron moten) and a bounty hunter ghoul (walton goggins)

ulysses is not the name he was born with; he named himself after ulysses s. grant

he's from the twisted hairs, a tribe that was forcibly assimilated into the legion after vulpes inculta "pacified" them at dry wells. their history and culture were erased, and some of their people were crucified along interstate 40. the rest were broken, brainwashed, and absorbed into the legion

he rose through the ranks of the meritocratic legion slave army, becoming a frumentarius who worked as an undercover courier for caesar

he was one of the scouts who scouted the hoover dam for the legion

he was walking the wastes when he found the community that would become the divide; there, he found a potential home. until courier six came and delivered a package that blew it all up

in the wreckage of his potential new home, ulysses was saved by medical eyebots who saw the flag on his back and recognized it

he was sent by caesar to become an emissary to the white legs, who tried to honor him by mirroring his hair, which, unbeknown to them, was personal to him, because woven in the braids was ulysses' and his tribe's histories

he left the white legs shortly after they showed him their new hair, fashioned after him - it felt like a hollow mockery of his dead tribe

he defected from the legion after the battle at new canaan, becoming a bighorner herder at wolfhorn ranch and working and roaming he wastes as a courier

he found the big mt by tracking irregular weather patterns, and there he found father elijah and christine royce

he directed father elijah to the sierra madre, knowing elijah would find his death there

he rescued christine and nursed her back to help in a cave, learning about the brotherhood of steel from her. she gave him a recorder, which he used to create the logs that courier six would find along the divide

he spoke with the think tank asked them one question - "who are you, that do not know your history?" - and this shook them, made them remember the old world. they told him about the missiles under the divide

he went back to couriering, finding out that courier six was still alive from johnson nash - he was supposed to deliver the platinum chip but somehow knew it would be trouble, so he passed it on to courier six, hoping that the job would kill them

but discovering that courier six, the person that destroyed his new home, the person that he has been obsessing over for years, was still alive, awoke his desire for revenge against them

he made a plan to teach courier six a lesson about history - his, and theirs, together - and accountability, and how one person can make such a huge impact on the world, even unwittingly

he lured courier six to the divide, to see what they had wrought, and what he has planned

his plan: aim missiles at dry wells and the long 15, two strategic locations that would cut the throats of both the legion and the ncr. whether they launch would be up to the courier after their confrontation

he does not want to nuke the world and kill millions. only two locations that would weaken both warring armies. again, the decision to nuke these locations is up to courier six

i noticed something. there's a trend in fandom where people dismiss black characters as boring and useless no matter how much they enrich the narrative, right? we've seen it with preston garvey, with wyll ravengard, with maximus in the fallout show, with countless other characters... but as a years-long ulysses enthusiast i've never seen anyone call him boring. he's been called many things, of course: obnoxious, annoying, difficult to understand, confusing, insufferable, a bitch, to name a few. people have come into my askbox to tell me they kill him every time, someone replied once that they want to set him on fire, etc etc. in short, people hate him

what i'm wondering now is... why is that? what is it about ulysses that makes him not boring but rage-inducing instead? is it because he's not a main companion (who you can simply leave at camp), and you can't ignore him if you want to know the whole story? is it because he, as a character, dares you, the player, to confront your actions? is it because he's pivotal to the dlcs, arguably the main game, and you have no choice but to engage with him, and on his own terms?

and anyway, why is the fandom fate of a black character either ambivalence and dismissal or straight-up hate and violence? sure there are small and vocal pockets of love for these characters, but those are small islands in a sea of negativity. i mean, we had to make a separate "preston positive" tag, for god's sake. what gives

okey dokey! i just finished the fallout show! some Thoughts under the read more

tl:dr, the (bethesda) fallout vibes were definitely there. i liked it as a show on its own merits but as a part of the series canon... i'm mad, and that anger is kind of overriding the little i liked about it. overall maybe 2.5/5 stars and im being generous

things i liked:

visually, it's stunning - i could see scenes already being made into gifsets - the color grading is pretty good; even in dark scenes i could see and understand what was happening

the sets are soooo good!! costume design was alright too

title cards were fun and cute

they did some interesting stuff with the cultures of both vault 33 and the brotherhood of steel

they used the sound effects from the games :)

i liked the wastelanders!!! big npc and random encounter energy. i kind of want a whole show of just them. for example i love the marketplace and settlement in filly; it feels very lived in

the background characters weren't just young thin able-bodied conventionally attractive white people :) there's so many elders, which i loved!! ma june and barv were cool. i love gruff old lesbians

lucy!!! she was already kind of weird and a little off-putting even in vault 33 ("what's your sperm count" as an opener to the husband she was just arranged married to is WILD) and i like that. she's sweet and bullheaded and surprisingly competent :)

maximus is kind of an ass, but is also a pathetic nerd and brotherhood dickrider who actually doesn't really know anything. kind of a girlfailure

the ghoul was pretty cool too!! i liked him, though more for his prewar story than the one he has post-apocalypse

lucy's brother norman kinda grew on me. "i lack enthusiasm for every job that i do here" so relateable. also short king <3

the monsters that we have were cool!! wish there had been more of them

to summarize: it came out strong! and stumbled hard falling face fucking first at the finish line. i would have liked it a lot more if it did not shit on the west coast as much as it did. because what the FUCK. if it was set literally anywhere else and left the ncr alone i would have liked it more, because on its own, as a self-contained story, divorced from the rest of the fallout series canon, it's not bad!!! it's fun, there's some good bits, it has the ~vibes~ but - and this is a big but - i don't know what it's trying to say. it's all very surface level and the very vague themes i picked up on are not really reiterated in the plot

it's like... the bits that make it fallout are there. vaults. the brotherhood. ghouls. a dog named dogmeat. but there's something lacking. it's like your usual sci-fi post-apocalypse show with a fallout veneer. idk. i like it for what it is but also i hate it for what it's emblematic of. that's all

this is ABSOLUTELY not meant to disagree with you or anything I've just been a little confused lately (plus love to talk about stuff like this). when you say that the fallout show or modern fallout doesn't understand the themes, what do you mean? Is it that they don't execute them as well/as cleanly, or are there things wholly missing that you'd expect in fallout media? and then bc i love your fallout takes: What are the things you'd want/expect?

hmm. the thing is that the first two fallouts + fnv (and fallout 3 and 4 to an extent) are about a post-post-apocalypse. the world has ended, and now a new world has risen from the ashes. new civilizations, new societies, new life. for me, the core theme of fallout has always been that people will always survive, always rebuild, even after such a catastrophic world-ending event, because that's just our nature. it's only a question of whether people will be rebuilding in the image of the old world or making something entirely new; whether they'll let go and begin again or be stuck with their old world blues

i know the series tagline is "war never changes" which has been taken to mean that society is doomed to violence and war forever and ever and ever but i want to point out that it has been rebutted by ulysses in lonesome road ("if war doesn't change, men must change, and so must their symbols. even if it is nothing at all, know what you follow, courier...") so i had really hoped the show and newer additions to the series would have moved on somewhat. but bethesda are married to their "recently post-apocalypse, violence is rampant, everyone hates everyone else" setting, so we'll be getting random settlement bombings explained away by someone solemnly saying "war never changes..." until they run the IP ragged
