By Your Side | Shiki x Rebecca One Shot (Edens Zero)

Rating: T (Violence, Blood, Language)
(NOTE: Loosely inspired by a prompt suggested to me by @lucy-and-rebecca as well as a My Hero Academia/Kill la Kill audio fanfic, which you can find here. Also contains slight elements of the "Ziggy is Shiki" fan theory, which may or may not come to pass in the chapters to come.)
(Context: Shiki gives in to despair after learning the truth about his connection to Ziggy. The crew of the Edens Zero attempt to reach him, resulting in an all-out fight that continues until only Shiki and Rebecca are left standing.)

The crew of the Edens Zero were struggling to stand up. Beaten, bruised and broken, their attempts to reach out to Shiki Granbell were seemingly failing.
Even Weisz and Homura were unable to keep up with the darkness within Shiki.
The only reason why any of them are even alive is because of one thing: The Cat Leaper Rebecca Bluegarden stepping in.
"Get the others to safety," the blonde girl ordered Homura and Weisz. The two complied with Rebecca's command. They wanted to warn her to stay out of this and run away.
But Rebecca won't run away. She would never turn her back on the people she loves. That's not the kind of person she is.
"Well, well. Look decided to show up. Good to see you again," the young man Shiki says in a cold, almost mocking tone. "Shiki, listen to me," Rebecca responses in a frantic manner. "Please stop this. This isn't you."
"What. The others keeled over and now you're giving me orders?" Shiki replied, his tone slightly raised. "You don't know what you're doing," The Cat Leaper says.
“I know one thing,” the heir apparent to the Demon King growled. “You’re all going to die!” He then lunges at Rebecca with an attack, she which then blocks with her right hand. “Or we can all live!” The girl cried out. “We can still stop Ziggy! You’re better than this!”
“Spare me your damn BS!” Shiki roared, seemingly enraged at the mere of...that name. The name that his “future” self took for himself. The name he now feels total disgust for.
He then activated his Overdrive, his hair turning white and his appearance taking on a more demonic appearance. He then lunged towards the girl. His claw-like hands slashed through her stomach, staining them red in her blood.
Rebecca was lucky that her Cat Leaper abilities activated at that moment, reversing time by a few seconds, giving just enough time to avoid the attack. She knew what would if she continued to overuse the ability, but that was a risk she was willing to take. She was determined to save Shiki, no matter what.
Shiki took notice of the girl dodging his attack and prepared to strike again, only for her to block his attack with her hands. “Please, stop this! The others and myself! We all want you to come home!” Rebecca pleaded as Shiki began to use his gravity to hold her in place. “Don’t compare me to those worthless pieces of trash!” He roared as the Cat Leaper fell to her knees from the gravity.
Rebecca gritted her teeth in pain as she struggled to get up, coughing up blood as she does so. She ignored the fact that her capillaries had burst. The loudest sound she could was the erratic pounding of her heart, which was dangerously close to bursting like a water balloon from how fast and hard it was beating from the intense gravity.
“So, every one of your friends are worthless?!?" The girl cried out. "What about Happy? What about me?!? Am I worthless too?!?"
"SHUT UP!" Shiki shouted as he clenched his fist, his gravity crushing the girl's heart in her chest. Blood escaped the Cat Leaper's mouth, the air in her lungs being forced out of her body as she collapses to the ground.
And once again, the Cat Leaper's abilities would save her, reversing time by several seconds. But this time, the girl winced in pain. A small crack formed on her face, the result of overusing her abilities.
"I...I know you're hurting, Shiki," Rebecca begged. "I know it hurts. Knowing the truth about yourself. Just, please. Let me help you."
"Stop treating me like I need your help or anyone's!" Shiki shouted in response. He looked like he was about to have a mental breakdown at any moment. "Stop giving me your sympathetic crap! You could never understand how I feel! Everything about my life is meaningless!"
A long silence followed Shiki's words. After a few seconds, that silence would be broken.
"Is that...what you really think? About us? About me?" Rebecca asked softly. Another moment of silence as the girl clenched her fist. "You damn...lying...IDIOT!"
Suddenly, Rebecca punched Shiki with enough force to knock him back at least half a foot, catching him off guard. "I don't buy it! The Shiki I know would never say that!" The determined girl shouted as she readied herself for the next attack. "If I have to knock some sense into you, I will! Come on, Shiki!"
The two then lunged towards each other. They fought with everything they had. Like a true battle of light and darkness.
But for Rebecca, it was a seemingly never-ending cycle.
She still remembers each killing blow and devastating strike on her body. Each one resulting in her Cat Leaper abilities reversing time. Each reversal making her body more and more cracked. The cracks spreading from her from her face to her left arm to her chest.
"Leave me alone!" Shiki roared as Rebecca continued to avoid his attacks, despite being worse for wear. "No!" Rebecca cried out as she countered Shiki's every move. "I refuse to run away! I'm not going to let you make yourself suffer. I'm going to save you!"
"ENOUGH!" Shiki screamed at the top of his lungs as he rammed his fist into the girl’s torso. Blood splashed from her freshly made wound as well as her throat. Yet, she powers through the pain despite knowing it might kill her.
“W-why?!?” Shiki growled. “Why won’t you just leave me be?!? Why are you wasting your time with a monster like me?!?”
“Because,” Rebecca spoke softly. The Cat Leaper’s breathing grew raspy, due in large part to the blood exiting her throat. It was clearly taking a lot out of her just to speak.
Suddenly, something happened that Shiki didn’t expect.
Tears flowed down the girl’s face as a faint smile emerged. A soft gasp escapes the Demon King’s lips.
"Because...I don’t...want to lose you,” she says weakly as she wraps her arms around the young man. “You’ll...keep calling yourself a monster, but...I know in my heart that...you’re still a good person.”
Shiki's thoughts raced through his mind at the sight of her tears. He didn't realize it at the time, but it would prove to be the slap in the face he needed.
“She’s...crying? She doesn’t want to lose me? Why? Why is she risking everything...her own life...for me? Am I...really...doing the right thing?”
Time again reversed. To the moments right before Shiki’s last attack.
Rebecca collapsed to the ground in pain, the cracks on her body intensifying even more. In fairness, though, both of them were already out of breath.
Then suddenly, faint memories of the time loops entered Shiki's mind. The man clutched his head in agony, like a thousand needle stabbing his brain all at once.
"J-just stop! Just stop it!" Shiki grunted as he regained his composure. He looked like he was about to burst into tears. "I-I don't want to fight you! You're going to get yourself killed if you keep using your powers like that. You have your whole life ahead of you. So, please. Just...let me go."
Rebecca responded by wrapping her arms around him tightly, tears flowing down her face. “No. I won’t,” she replied. “I’m not gonna let go. You’ve always been an inspiration to us. To me. You don’t have to carry that burden alone. We’re in this together.”
She stops herself for a moment. “How can...I use my power...to save the universe,” she says, trying to fight back the tears. “...if I can’t...save one person?”
Shiki let out a soft gasp at the girl’s words. He struggled to hold back his emotions.
“I...want to find Mother, but...,” Rebecca continued. “I wanna be by your side, too.”
And with that, the tears that Shiki tried to fight back began to leak out. The young man began to sob on Rebecca’s shoulder as she comforted him.
Her touch was as if the light in Shiki’s soul had begun to slowly return to him.

Two days pass since that confrontation.
Every one of the crew members are still pretty shaken up by what had happened. All of them felt a mix of relief and uncertainty.
Perhaps none were more effected by the events than Shiki and Rebecca.
The Cat Leaper expected everything to return to normal when Shiki came back to her.
Instead, the “Grand Demon” isolated himself from everyone else. He couldn’t even look the girl in the eye.
Was what happened still on his mind? What was bothering him? The girl had to find out.
“Shiki...let’s talk,” Rebecca says as she approached Shiki’s room. “Is something the matter?”
She opens the door and sees the boy sitting on his bed. His body slumped over and his head facing downwards so the girl couldn’t tell what he was feeling.
“Shiki, what’s wrong?” Rebecca asked. She notices Shiki’s body starting to tremble. "Say something. Talk to me," the girl begged.
Shiki's body still trembled. Finally, he looked at her. He looked like he was breaking down into tears. "I'm...I'm...I'm so sorry, Rebecca," he sobbed repeatedly as he hugged the Cat Leaper.
"Shiki," the girl said softly as she comforted the young man. "It's okay. Just let it all out."
"No. It's not okay," Shiki tearfully replied. "I...I..."
"You what?" The Cat Leaper asked. "I...still remember...everything that happened," Shiki continued. "All of the time loops. All the times I...I killed you. Ziggy was right. I am a monster."
Rebecca knew exactly what he was talking about. The time loops that occurred were still weighing heavily on his mind.
"Look at me, Shiki," Rebecca says reassuringly, holding the boy's face so that he's facing her. "You're not a monster. It doesn't matter what Ziggy says or what you think about yourself. I'll..."
She stops for a brief moment, her face getting closer to Shiki's. "I'll always be here for you. Because...because I love you."
Shiki was caught off guard by the girl's lips making contact with his own. The pupils of his eyes dilated and his pulse increase along with hers.
It takes a few moments before he fully melts into her kiss. He starts to tear up even more, knowing she truly loves him.
The two break the kiss. They were both left catching their breath.
"I love you, too" Shiki says breathlessly, smiling for the first time in a long while.
This would be his first step towards mending the relationships of everyone he loves.

@imjustheretoseetheprivateblogs I saw your comment and although the hauntober prompts have been filled, this was the first shicca request, and technically there was still the 31st open so...
Inspired by Mashima’s Halloween shicca art:
Ever since her 18th birthday, Rebecca hated full moons. She still remembered that day perfectly as she screamed at her mother. Why didn’t you tell me?! Her mother was human, but her father whom she’d never met, had been a werecat. All the woman could say between the sobs were I’m sorry... sorry she didn’t know... sorry they didn’t know if she’d inherit the genes. Well she had, and now two years later it was still a struggle to keep living.
Everything had changed after that moment. Future goals of college, gone. A career in advertising, indefinite hold. It was difficult to find good jobs that would give her the day off every month, on a specific day, no fail because she couldn’t risk changing in front of humans. And relationships? Pfft. No way would she do what her father did to her mother, and certainly not bring a child into this world to struggle too.
She had a few friends, but none that knew about being a werecat. They just assumed Rebecca had a quirk about full moons and left it at that. Ugh! She really missed being able to socialize with people! In high school, she was popular, bubbly, a cheerleader with tons of friends. She’d dreamed of getting into advertising, maybe even becoming a social media influencer or something fun like that! Now, her life was mostly anonymous, still online, but holed up in her apartment unless she had to work. It was simply too scary to get close to people and hurt or be hurt by the sting of rejection.
Of course, the one Halloween she could have gone out despite the full moon, had to happen during a damn pandemic! All social gatherings were against the law in their city, so— no parties. Rebecca was so distraught that she’d ditched her apartment for the night and found her way to a high bluff deep in the woods, where in the far distance you could see the faint lights of the next town over. It really was a beautiful spot, quiet, serene, and perhaps because animals could sense her supernatural blood, nothing every bothered her out here.
Rebecca looks up at the large bright moon and gives it the middle finger, before pulling her legs up and wrapping her arms around them. She rests her chin on her knees. Is this really how she’ll spend the rest of her life? Miserable and alone? Maybe she should just move to some cabin way out here in the middle of nowhere...
Her ears flick back at a soft rustling sound coming from behind her. Probably just a squirrel or something... But wait?! Her nose picks up an unusual scent. Human and canine mixed together. All her extraordinary senses go on heightened alert and every hair stands up along her feline arms. Rebecca leaps to her feet, turning around just as the rustling sound stops.
A large male lands just three feet in front of her. “Hi!!”
‘Hi?!’ Rebecca’s tail flicks in irritation and her claws extended, ready for defense. “W-who are you?!” She asks the stranger. Wasn’t he scared to see a weird cat girl in the middle of a forest?! Then again, this male wasn’t exactly normal either... “What are you?”
“Name’s Shiki,” he grins, “and I’m just like you, sort of,” his head tilts as his nose sniffs the air. “Except you’re a cat and I’m a dog. Wanna be my friend?!”
Was this guy serious?! He seemed so relaxed about everything. Taller, broader in chest, and while she still held onto some human features after the change, this male was much more wolf-like in appearance. “Um. I’m Rebecca. How are you so happy? Don’t you hate being like, um a werewolf?”
“Doesn’t bother me,” he shrugs and plops down into a cross legged position. “My mom and grandpa are werewolves too, so it’s just part of the family. What about you?”
“I hate it.”
“Why?”
“Why?! Because it ruined my life, that’s why! I mean look at me! I have to hide away this ugly body from the world,” Rebecca gestures wildly at the sky, “because of that stupid full moon!”
“I don’t see an ugly body. You have a nice body.”
“What?” Her arms drop instantly but cross against her chest. She didn’t want to call him an idiot, but their definitions of beauty differed. “Where exactly are you from, Shiki, was it?”
“That town way over there,” he points to the lights.
“But that’s 15 miles away! Do you normally travel this far on these nights?”
“Not really, but two months ago I picked up on your scent and was curious to see who you were. There’s not many of us Werepeople around so I was surprised to find another so close by,” he grins, “and a pretty girl at that. Must be my lucky moon.”
This time Rebecca couldn’t hide the blush that steals away on her cheeks. Twice this guy had complimented her appearance, but she just wasn’t used to hearing such things. She’d been so focused on the loss of her human life that she targeted all of her hate and anger towards this body, which wasn’t as ugly as she wanted to believe. Plus, calling herself ugly meant she had to call Shiki ugly too and for a werewolf, he wasn’t all that bad looking. Perhaps...
Her voice softened, hesitant but hopeful, while her eyes glance towards the ground. “You really think so?”
“Heck yeah!” He bounces to his feet and grabs her hands, tail wagging like the happiest puppy in the world! “You should come meet my family! They’ll so love you!”
Rebecca’s eyes pop open wide. “N-Now?!” But, it’s late and she works in the morning, and...
“Why not?” He scoops her up against his chest. “15 minutes tops! Hold on!”
Rebecca squeals and quickly wraps her arms around his neck, gripping to the collar of his shirt as his powerful hind legs leap from the cliff. “Shiki!!! Are you crazy?!” They barely just met! And okay, it was awesome to meet someone else like her, but how did she know he wasn’t some crazed killer? How was he so sure she could trusted?
When he hits the forest floor below, he looks down at Rebecca with the widest, brightest smile to rival the moon itself that sent heart leaping. “Trust me.”
And so, she did...

A bit of a prediction for future Edens Zero arcs
I can't help but think at some point, Shiki may probably fall into darkness for at least an arc or so (no doubt after either Ziggy's identity reveal, some mistrust towards his crew mates or both).
I could easily see his friends and probably other characters confronting him and having fight him. Perhaps, he comes dangerously close to killing someone...before Rebecca steps in, talking the hit.
This, I think, would cause Shiki to snap back to reality, howling in anguish upon realizing what he's done (think Luffy's mournful howl upon Ace's death in One Piece, seen below).
Of course, Shiki's attack obviously won't kill Rebecca, but would likely result in a near death experience and possibly put her in a coma, minus the cybernetic legs from her nightmare.
After this traumatic event, Shiki would understandably blame himself for what had happened and would be desperate to make amends for his actions. He would most likely stay by with the comatose Rebecca, likely leading to a scene of him confessing his love for her, despite not knowing if she would hear it or not.
So, when Rebecca eventually wakes up, Shiki tearfully hugs her tight. The two would then reconcile, confessing their feelings before sharing a kiss.

Pain. Agony.
That was what Rebecca Bluegarden was feeling.
The toxic gas originating from Britney's Ether Gear surrounded her.
The pain came almost immediately. Her body begin to sizzle, an extreme burning sensation spreading to every nerve and vein inside of her.
This was not helped by the fact that she was breathing in the gas, her heart and her lungs working overtime, trying to compensate for the excruciating pain overtaking her.
She screamed like no one had screamed before, her body not having enough time to gasp for air. Her skin melting away, leaving only blood red mass of exposed muscle remaining.
Eventually, her screams started to dull. A blueish white light enters her vision before her consciousness fade to black.
Rebecca shot upward out of her bed, sweating like crazy, trying and failing to catch her breath. She clutches her chest, her fingers digging into the fabric of her white tank top. Her eyes widened. She could feel her heart and lungs going into overdrive, the memory of that moment still fresh in her mind, even after 2 or 3 years.
"Rebecca! Are you alright?!?" She hears a familiar voice say. The gravity boy called Shiki immediately rushed to her side. The x-ray functions of his robotic eye picked up on the girl's rapid and erratic heartbeat. She looked like she was struggling to breathe. He was understandably worried about her.
"Try to breathe, Rebecca!" Shiki says in a very concerned tone, placing his hand on Rebecca's heart. His presence usually brings her peace of mind. And this was no different. She soon manages to calm her breathing and heartbeat, finally able to catch her breath.
“You okay?” Shiki asked, wanting to be sure that the girl is alright. “Sorry,” Rebecca replied, still catching her breath. Her hand is still glues to her chest, her heart still pumping at an abnormal rate. “It’s...It’s that dream...no, memory, again...of me, back when we were on Foresta...”
Shiki had heard this story only once before. He could only imagine the horrific images in his head of what she went through.
It had to have been a traumatizing moment for her. That moment of her literally melting away in agony. Her life slowly fading away. The chance to do all the things she wanted to do slipping away as her life did.
Shiki wanted to get those awful thoughts out of his head.
So, he comforted her.
“Hey. It’s alright,” he said calmly and maturely. “You’re alright. You’re safe. You’re alive. You’re here now. That’s all that matters to me.”
A soft gasp escaped Rebecca’s mouth. Her face turned slightly red from his touch and his words.
She’s lucky to have Shiki as a friend. Maybe more than a friend. He truly cares about her wellbeing.
She couldn’t help but wrap her arms around him. She’s happy to be by his side, breathing and alive.

It's Not Your Fault (Shiki x Rebecca)
Fandom: Edens Zero
Category: Angst with a happy ending
(Context: Post-Aoi Cosmos Saga, Shiki leaves EZ after learning he (and likely the other EZ members) discover that Shiki and "Ziggy" are the "same" person (check out my EZ theory for more), pushing everyone he loves away (a la MHA's "Dark Deku" arc), Rebecca is nearly killed protecting him, forcing him to see the error of his ways and realizing his feelings of love towards Rebecca in the process)

Everything was black. Rebecca wasn't sure where she was, if anywhere at all.
This was nothing like her Ether Gear taking her from one world to another. This was pure nothingness, where even time is nonexistent.
She could hear a voice. It was very faint. She couldn't quite make out what it was saying.
"...ove...ou..."
It did sound familiar to her though. But before she could piece everything together, she see a light.
A light that was getting closer and closer to her.
Before Rebecca knew it, she felt something in her hand.
The girl's blue eyes slowly open. Her vision is blurry at first. Slowly though, she could make out a familiar shape, though she couldn't make out what or who it was.
She tries to make sense of her surroundings. It isn't long before she realizes that she is in what is most likely the medical area aboard the Edens Zero, judging by the several wires connected to her body, monitoring her vitals.
And that's when she sees...him.
Shiki was being overwhelmed by his emotions. Ranging from sadness to regret...and then finally, relief. He looked like he was ready to burst into tears. Which he did.
Before Rebecca could utter another word, she was met with a bear hug from Shiki. The gravity boy sobbed uncontrollably on the Cat Leaper’s shoulder, unable to contain his tears.
Rebecca hugged him back. She knew that there was still good left in Shiki.
After a while, Rebecca stared at Shiki, who was wiping away the tears that were still flowing.
"Shiki," Rebecca said softly. "I-"
"Rebecca," Shiki interrupted, trying and failing to keep it together, judging by the tears. “I...I’m...I’m sorry. For everything.” He was clearly struggling to get the right words out of his mouth.
Between losing his eye to Shura and learning “Ziggy’s” real identity in addition to pushing his friends-no, family-away, the thought of losing the first human friend he ever made. Losing the girl that showed him life beyond Granbell.
Seeing her almost get killed trying to save him. To save his soul. That moment was a real wake up call to him.
He couldn’t help but cry. He couldn’t help but let out everything he’s feeling right now.
Sadness. Regret. Anguish. Relief.
Love.
“Shiki,” Rebecca once again spoke. She could tell Shiki was having a difficult time with everything that���s happened. “How...how long was I-?”
“Two weeks,” Shiki muttered, which caught Rebecca off guard. She could only imagine what was going through his mind during those two weeks.
“The...worst two weeks of my life,” Shiki continued. "Thinking about..." He hesitates. He doesn't want think back to what lead to this. His tears continued to leak out. "Thinking about...all the horrible things I said to you. And the others. It...."
"It isn't your fault, Shiki," Rebecca said softly, caressing Shiki's face. "What happened was-"
"It is my fault!" Shiki suddenly cried out. "You almost died because of me! Because of what I said! It wasn't right for me push you away like that! You didn't deserve to suffer for my mistake! I-"
At this point, Shiki was breaking down into tears, sobbing uncontrollably. Rebecca comforted him. She knows he needed it badly. "Ssh. It's okay. Let it all out," she says.
"At least tell me why," Shiki replied. "Why would you want to save me despite everything?"
The question stunned Rebecca. She knew she had to save him from sinking any lower than he already has. But deep down, she knew she had another reason for saving him.
She wasn't sure how to respond to Shiki's question, so she decided to let her actions say it all.
Without warning, she pulled Shiki close to her...and their lips made contact. The gravity boy was thrown completely off guard by this action and yet...it just...felt right. He closed his eyes and melted into her kiss and the two embrace.
After a while, they pulled away.
"Because...I love you," Rebecca said softly.
Just as suddenly as the kiss, it started again. This time, it was Shiki who initiated it.
"Rebecca, I...I love you too," he replied after pulling away.
And for the first time in a long time, he smiled.
