May 20 - Shibuya/Harajuku
Today was shopping day. We visited the Shibuya and Harajuku districts, which are world-renowned for and their bustling stores and commercial activity. Upon exiting the train station, we saw the famous Hachikō memorial dedicated to Japan's most loyal canine. Then we walked a few feet over to the just as iconic Shibuya scramble crossing. The busiest intersection in the world, Shibuya scramble is probably the image most people associate with Tokyo. Its intersecting crosswalks beneath the canopy of advertisements and towering buildings is the epitome of Tokyo's consumer culture and high population density. It was definitely something I've been looking forward to experiencing.

After a quick info blurb from Professor Smith we broke for lunch and shopping. A few of us decided to visit Madarake, a famous manga shop. When we arrived, we found out that it didn't open until noon, so I went to go do some shopping on my own. I found a few record stores and picked up a few Japanese pressings. I could have spent all day just browsing vinyls, but it was already past 12 and I wanted to see Madarake, so I headed over to the shop. The stairs leading down into Madarake were super cool, with their angled mirrors and cavernous walls. The store itself was a labyrinth of shelves filled to the brim with manga, anime, and figurines - an otaku's paradise. I left with a couple Junji Ito books just for the experience of buying manga in Japan (I can always enjoy the art, at least).

We met back up as a group and continued to the Meiji shrine. The serene path leading to the shrine was surrounded by trees and stately Torii, a stark contrast to the chaos of Shibuya. I've always had a fascination with Shinto and seeing my first shrine in person was a truly special experience. We washed our hands and dropped coins in reverence the kami and continued on our way.

The last stop was Harajuku, a narrow street lined with shops and restaurants. I found a good vegan ramen restarant with some friends for lunch/dinner, and then we headed back to the apartment.

Academic Reflection
The first article we read provided an insightful look into contemporary kawaii culture, and it's possible repercussions on Japan's global position. Shibuya and Harajuku were physical manifestations of this culture, which was readily apparent in the fashion and advertising. As specific to the article, I saw plenty of Hello Kitty merchandise, from which the majority of kawaii culture can be traced back to.
The economic and technological prowess indicated by the two districts are descended from advancements made during the Meiji Restoration, during which Japan opened it doors to the rest of the world and ended its period of isolation. The primary instigator of Japan's rapid growth was the Meiji Emperor, to whom the Meji Shrin was dedicated. The size of the shrine, especially considering Tokyo's expensive land price, shows how significant a figure the emperor is in Japan's history, and how celebrated he is today.
